I write this letter with a happy heart as South African golfers have recorded some wonderful results over the last few months. Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace got the ball rolling by winning the first two LIV Golf events. Then Ashleigh Buhai came along and won the Women’s Open at Muirfield. What a fabulous achievement and so well deserved. Now Paula Reto wins the CP Women’s Open on the same weekend that Thriston Lawrence wins the European Masters. It is unbelievable the talent that our country Surelypossesses.South Africa should be actively marketed as a golfing destination as we have the most amazing golf courses and these success stories will have grabbed the attention of the international market.

Great weather, well maintained golf courses and golfing facilities and the indomitable South African spirit combine to make our country a must visit for foreigners wishing to play golf. Starting your golf journey the correct way is important especially when it comes to the best suitable equipment for you and your game. Every player has a different swing, body movements, strengths and limitations. These factors require specific equipment for each individual to ensure the best outcome when playing the game. Across the country you will find PGA Professionals who will assist you with not only golf lessons to improve your skills and game, but also to get properly fitted for the right equipment suitable for you! Instead of buying the next best special on promotion or purchasing the same equipment that your friend brags about at the 19th hole, start your golf the right way and save yourself time, effort and money.

olf is a game for all abilities, ages and gender. Those who are hungry for competition, or the ones who just wants to have fun. Although it may seem very complicated just by listening to the lingo and seeing the variety of equipment, having the wrong equipment is detrimental to your game, regardless of ability.

Golfers invited its first female members in the club’s 275-year history. That only came after the R&A took the iconic course off the men’s British Open rota after a 2016 membership vote to bring women in failed to reach the two-thirds required. A re-vote in 2017 pushed it through. Buhai became the third South African to win a British Open at Muirfield, joining her heroes Els and Gary Player, who won in 1959. While this marked the first women’s professional event ever held at Muirfield, the men have staged 16 British Opens at the historic club, dating back to 1892. Major success for Buhai

During a practice round at Muirfield, Ashleigh Buhai pulled up a YouTube video of Ernie Els’ magnificent bunker shot on the par-3 13th from his victory 20 years ago for inspiration. One day, a young South African will do the same to Buhai after she pulled off a sensational bunker save of her own on the fourth playoff hole to win the 2022 AIG Women’s British Open over three-time major winner In Gee Chun. Back in February, Buhai began working with sports psychologist Duncan McCarthy, and their time together has been game-changing for the LPGA veteran. Buhai said she’s been swinging good for some time but couldn’t keep herself in the moment. That certainly wasn’t the case this week.

Buhai became the second South African woman to win a major, joining Sally Little (1980 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, 1988 du Maurier Classic). Seven South African men have won majors.

“Show them why you’re No. 1 in bunkers this year,” encouraged her caddie, Tanya Paterson. Buhai hit a beauty, and after Chun knocked in a bogey putt, the stage was set for the 33-year-old former South African prodigy to etch her name into history.Buhai, began playing golf at age 6 and has been the face of women’s golf in South Africa since she was a teenager. The one-time prodigy won the 2004 South African Open at age 14 and led her country to the World Amateur Team Championship title on home soil in 2006, before turning professional the following year. Buhai met her husband, David, at a golf academy in Johannesburg and the couple began dating long distance 15 years ago. After Buhai’s caddie suffered a broken leg, David took a leave from the shoe store and never went back, working for Ashleigh right up until they got married, when he picked up another bag. Why the sudden change? “Some people say it might be good to stay married,” Ashleigh once joked.

SPECIAL FEATURE - ASHLEIGH BUHAI tournament, one better than 2019 AIG champion Hinako Shibuno. It marked the first playoff at the British Open in three decades.

“It’s been a long journey, but man, it’s all worth it right now.”

“I’m just so proud of how I’ve stuck it out,” said Buhai of the expectations she has carried for decades.

David, who now caddies for Jeongeun Lee6, was on the 18th sweating every shot during the playoff and raced onto the green when his wife sealed the championship with the up-and-down of her life.

The pair traded sudden-death blows down the 18th four times, with the Muirfield clubhouse providing a dramatic backdrop. The closing hole played the hardest on the course for three straight days, and after Chun found a fairway bunker the fourth time down, Buhai faced a daunting greenside bunker shot as daylight dwindled.

After 12 years on tour and more than his fair share of close calls, heartache and injuries, Anthony Michael finally claimed his first victory on the Sunshine Tour in the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate.

www.sagolftrader.co.za September | October 202222

Even as he stood on the 18th green with Dingle about to putt, Michael was steeling himself for another missed opportunity. “I’ve been in that position so many times where I’ve missed a putt and given away the tournament. So I was preparing myself for the playoff. When Wyn and missed there was just massive relief.”

RELIEF AS MICHAEL MAKES HIS BREAKTHROUGH IN VODACOM ORIGINS

Michael signed for a final round of 69 to win on 10 under par, one shot clear of Herman Loubser and Wynand Dingle. Dingle had a four-foot putt on the last to force a playoff with Michael but “I’mmissed.over the moon. After so many years and so many runner-up finishes, I felt like I wasn’t carrying just a monkey on my back anymore. It felt like a gorilla,” said a relieved Michael.

The victory comes after a tough period in which Michael has battled his way through a painful elbow injury and the recovery process. “I was playing through the pain up to the point where I could barely hold a golf club anymore. I went for treatment and it put me out for four months. It was a tough time because this is how I earn a living, so it put a lot of pressure on me. I’m also getting married in two months’ time, so there were those financial considerations as well. But my spon sor Betway has been unbelievable in their support of me. “I’m just so relieved. I’ve seen all my friends on the Sunshine Tour win, and after 12 years of being on tour you wonder if it will ever happen.” CLIP

My breakthrough DP World Tour victory in the Joburg Open opened so many doors for me this season, and to follow that up with a second victory in the Omega European Masters is very pleasing. I also played in my first Major, which was an historic one with it being the 150th Open in St Andrews. INTERNATIONAL GLORY FOR GOLFRSA NO 1 VENTER

“To play the Old Course was a dream come true for me,” said Venter. “And to win a tournament here is even sweeter. I am so proud to have been able to stand on the Swilcan Bridge with the trophies in my hands.” Venter came into the event in fine form after her stunning play-off victory at the Gary Player CC, but the Free State junior had precious little links experience ahead of a trip to the Home of Golf.

Gabbi Venter put together two perfect rounds at the iconic Old Course to continue GolfRSA’s fine international form with a stunning double win in the St Andrews Junior Ladies Championship at St Andrews in TheAugust.18-year-old from Bloemfontein had risen to No 1 in the GolfRSA rankings in April and enjoyed her first national success in the Nomads SA Girls Championship at Sun City in July, but she had not been tested on international soil since she competed in the Optimus Kids and US Kids events in the United States as an Playing11-year-old.three

Asked how she prepared for the challenge, she responded: “It’s winter in Bloemfontein, so the courses have been playing very hard and it made preparation for links golf a little easier. I was able to practice my bump-and-run shots and putting from off the green – and these types of shots stood me in good stead at St Andrews this week.

“We have also had a squad camp at Atlantic Beach in Cape Town, which helped prepare me for the wind. My GolfRSA National Squad team-mate Kyra van Kan and I had practice rounds of the Eden and Strathyrum Courses, which helped a lot. I learned so much about course management this week; knowing when to hit my driver and when to take a 3-iron and play for Nervesposition.”certainly came into play in her first international event, as Venter proved to be a bit of a slow starter, falling behind early in each of her first three match play rounds. Yet her powerful drives and superb scrambling ensured plenty of birdies were on her cards and, ultimately, she closed out her matches by the 16th hole.

of the daunting links courses at the Home of Golf, Venter not only won the Stroke Play Qualifier by five shots but marched to a brilliant victory in the Match Play competition. In so doing, she becomes the first South African winner since the event launched in 1989. Her victory was made all the sweeter because the final two rounds of the Match Play were played on the historic Old Course at St Andrews.

Let’s go Internationals!”

Reigning British Amateur champion Aldrich Potgieter and GolfRSA No 1 Yurav Premlall will be teeing it up for the International Team in the 2022 Junior Presidents Cup in the United States this September. The two-day, team match-play competition features 24 of the world’s top junior boys aged 19 year and younger – 12 from the United States and 12 from around the world, excluding Europe. While the U.S. Team is selected off the Rolex AJGA Rankings, the International Team comprises the leading 10 juniors based on the World Amateur Golf Ranking Potgieter,(WAGR).ranked 39th in the world, qualified at number two in the standings, while fellow GolfRSA National Squad member Premlall, 199th in the WAGR, was fifth in the rankings. The Junior Presidents Cup was created to give the world’s best non-European juniors a unique playing opportunity to compete in an international team match-play competition and to grow and showcase the global reach of junior golf. Making the International team is another big milestone for Potgieter in his first season on the GolfRSA National Squad. In July, the 17-year-old showed maturity beyond his years to lift the 127th Amateur Championship title in Scotland. In a thrilling 36-hole final at Royal Lytham & St Annes, the young gun stood his ground in the face of a superb comeback from Englishman Sam Bairstow to seal a nail-biting 3 & 2 victory.

The win saw him play in the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews’ Old Course in July, and he will also tee it up in next year’s Masters and US Open Championships. Before his international breakthrough, the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy member impressed on home soil.

During the GolfRSA National Squad Tour to the United Kingdom in July, he followed a tie for 34th in the Brabazon Trophy with a tie for ninth in the Scottish Men’s Open in brutal conditions at Cruden Bay GC“I am super blessed and grateful for the opportunity to represent South Africa and the International Team on the world stage, and I am looking forward to this fantastic experience that has been given to us by the AJGA. It’s going to be a blast.

Following a tie for third in the African Amateur Stroke Play Championship on debut, he won the Nomads Junior International, became only the fifth junior to achieve the rare double in the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Championship and lifted the Western Province Amateur Glendower’stitle.Premlall, the leading amateur in the 2021 South African Open Championship, has not finished outside the top 10 this season and rose to the No 1 spot in the GolfRSA rankings on the back of a runner-up finish in the African Amateur Stroke Play Championship and victories in the Northern Cape Open and Western Province Stroke Play.

Dean Burmester has confirmed his place in the Nedbank Golf Challenge and will make his third appearance in “Africa’s Major” at the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City from November 10-13, “The2022.Nedbank Golf Challenge is an iconic tournament for any South African golfer. It’s one we all grew up watching and wanting to play in one day. This will be my third appearance and perhaps the most special as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. It will also be great to have all those passionate Nedbank Golf Challenge fans back after the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Burmester.

Already a two-time winner on the DP World Tour and eight-time Sunshine Tour champion, the 33-year-old Burmester took his game to the next level this year when he achieved his best-ever finish in a Major with tied 11th in the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. “My goal is to definitely to become South Africa’s next Major champion. I want to be challenging in the Majors. As a boy growing up, that’s where you want to be. You dream of standing at The Open with the claret jug, or at The Masters with a green jacket on. I want to give myself a chance in a Major on the back nine on a Sunday. I’d be pretty happy just to have that chance right now.”

Reto bogeyed the par-4-14th to drop to -19, with former Rolex Rankings No. 1 Korda surging in the group ahead of her. Korda holed out for eagle at No. 12 to start her rally and pulled within a stroke of Reto back-to-backwith birdies at 15 and 16. She lipped out a prime chance for a tying birdie at No. 17 and after finding the greenside bunker on her approach to No. 18, Korda’s two-putt for par gave Reto the room she needed to take her first title.

PAULA RETO WINS 2022 CP WOMEN’S OPEN

www.sagolftrader.co.za September | October 202248

In her 157th start on the LPGA Tour, Paula Reto finally became a champion. The 32-year-old South African, who now makes her home in southern Florida, knocked in a two-putt par on No. 18 at Ottawa Hunt GC to capture the 2022 CP Women’s Open. Reto, a nine-year LPGA Tour veteran, finished at -19 overall, one stroke ahead of Nelly Korda and Hye-Jin Choi and two strokes clear of Lydia Ko. “I’m really, really excited and just proud of myself for being able to stick through the shots and the routines. Sometimes I find that’s really hard to do, especially if you know you have only a few holes left,” said Reto. “But I was really nervous, especially I started pulling a few shots and I told myself, okay, just stay in the moment and breathe. You go through all those things that you think will help.”

With the win, Reto became the season’s second winner from South Africa, joining Ashleigh Buhai (AIG Women’s Open), and is the fourth LPGA Tour winner from South Africa overall, joining Sally Little (15 wins), Buhai (one win) and Lee-Anne Pace (one win). Reto is the eighth Rolex First-Time Winner of the 2022 LPGA Tour season and the fourth consecutive first-time winner; the last time the LPGA Tour had four consecutive first-time winners was 2005.

Reto’s Canadian success started on the Thursday, when she shot a personal-best 9-under 62 to set the course and tournament scoring record, as well as tie the low round of the LPGA Tour season. She stayed in contention all week and started the final day one stroke off the lead. Her morning was pure adrenaline, with Reto making the turn carrying a four-stroke lead on the strength of five front-nine birdies. But on the back nine, she admitted that the nerves came out and the birdies stopped flowing. “I started putting on the brakes, and that’s probably not what you want to do,” Reto said. “I haven’t really much been in this position, and I was just trying to control myself and be in the moment.”

With a global television broadcast to almost 400 million homes, the 2022 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open will play a key role in reigniting the local tourism industry following the disruption caused by the global pandemic. “I am delighted to see the return of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. Mauritius has a strong golf tradition stretching back over 150 years, and the nation is home to some of the best golf courses in the world. “The only way to do that is by working in partnerships with the communities and giving their children exposure. It’s not about throwing money at the problem, but about authentic partnerships,” Mhangwani said.

Vodacom’s involvement in golf goes way beyond just its support of the professionals on the Sunshine Tour – the Vodacom Origins of Golf series is the longest-running pro-am series on the Sunshine Tour.

A golf club can be a gateway to dreams, and that’s the clear message the young golfers from the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) were given as they took part in a development clinic with Sunshine Tour professionals at the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at the Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate. It’s a message wholly endorsed by Dr Ntombi Mhangwani, the Executive Head of Department for Vodacom Business Marketing, who was there to support the 18 young golfers from the SAGDB who form part of a partnership with the Vodacom Origins of Golf series that stretch es back decades in terms of its support of completelygolfexperiencesof“Indevelopment.golfacountrylikeSouthAfrica,withthelevelsinequalitywehave,certainlifelikecoursesarenaturalforsomebutforothersitisforeign.Ifwewanttonullify these inequalities then we have to reach the disadvantaged areas as well,” Mhangwani said as the young golfers, between the ages of seven and 16, from the Nelspruit, Lydenburg and Dullstroom districts were happily hitting balls on the Highland Gate driving range under the watchful eye of the Sunshine Tour professionals giving of their time to provide some coaching.

“When Vodacom says it wants to inspire change by going Further Together, we mean we want to develop together. So that means building and giving back to the communities that are our consumer base.

“Golf is about a value system, training and discipline, and that can permeate into these youngsters’ schooling, their lives at home and choosing the right Championsfriends. are also born out of watching other champions practice, and passing on their knowledge and skills. Exposure builds potential, and it allows these learners to “Ifdream.even one person at these golf clinics looks at the game and says that they want to be part of golf, they want to do that too, then we have succeeded in giving somebody an opportunity,” she said.

Partnering with the SAGDB to show the younger generation that golf can be a pathway to success is one of Vodacom’s key vehicles for change, and the purpose and life skills golf can give to learners is Mhangwanisomething loves about the game.

Closely aligned to its sponsorship of this series is the golf development aspect that underpins every single tournament wherever it is played in South Africa.

I was a member at Royal Durban Golf Club (RDGC) at the time and Garth Pearson asked me if I would like to work for him in his Pro Shop. After a few years, I was offered a job in the admin department at RDGC and as they say the rest is Managers Association of South Africa (CMASA) who offer the study opportunity of becoming a Certified Club Manager, has given me the opportunity to follow this as a worthy career path.

Haven’t had a mentor as such but someone to aspire to without a doubt, is Paul Leishman the GM at Bryanston Country Club. He has all the attributes and skills that makes him one of the best General Manager’s in South Africa.

2. Has it always been golf for you?

Not at all, I only started playing golf at the age of 21 having been a netball girl in the early days and having completed my studies, was heading into a career in Marketing. The golfing bug bit when I borrowed an uncle’s set of clubs and there began the journey.

In the past year I’ve been able to play more often. Have really enjoyed the camaraderie in being part of the KCC Ladies league team. I’m 55 now and joined the ranks of Seniors golf – we recently played 36 holes at Selborne –what a wonderful organisation KZN Ladies Seniors Golf is and what a great group of women golfers. any GM at any golf club you would get the same answer. The variety in a day is something I enjoy. I can start a day organising the clearing of a fallen tree, then deal with a Caddie having an asthma attack and end off by trying to find someone to relocate a hive of bees that decided to relocate to the putting green at the 4th..

CC ? We have adopted Ready Golf and have marshals on course encouraging play to speed up – slow play still remains a problem though.

12. What are your short & long term goals?

Playing golf and spending time with family and friends. I’m a member of a property investment club and it is something I am interested in as an alternative to one’s traditional retirement planning Myarrangements.loveofwildlife makes it essential to plan at least one trip to a game reserve every year.

13. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

10. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Yes I do. And we instill these beliefs in the young staff when they start out. Members should feel that the Club is their home away from home. We want them to enjoy every experience they have with us – from the friendly ‘Hello’ when they book in at the Pro Shop to the condition of the course to the hospitality in Halfway and in the Club Facilities after the Whengame.Isaid ‘Yes I do’ earlier, there’s a BUT I needed to add. A large proportion of our golf rounds is due to support from visitors and we strive for these players to have the same experience as our members.

11. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Been doing this for over 30 years so it’s a way of life and anyone looking at making a career in this industry, needs to understand the demands of the job. There is still time to enjoy life!!

Short term:- fulfilling the KCC strategic plan – we are about halfway through the plan which focuses on maximum utilisation of the facilities and finding alternate income streams. Long term:- i) As a mentor for CMASA, to assist young people in the industry to become certified club managers. ii) Be part of the team to take KCC to 2030 as one of the most successful clubs in KZN.

The Club’s management committee have recognised that by improving the look and feel of the Club premises and creating an attractive venue, that not only members but the community at large are using Kloof Country Club as a place to meet family and friends. The changes in the past 12 months have been enormously successful. The use of social media and connecting with our members and the community online also has had a positive impact on bringing people to the Club.In recent years, we have added a local running club into our stable of sporting disciplines and increased of the fastest growing sports in the world and the first game at KCC is scheduled for 15 October 2022. 9. www.sagolftrader.co.za September | October 202284 SPECIAL FEATURE - ALL ABOUT GREENKEEPING WITH CHARL BLAAUWQ A

4. With the PGA Championship coming up in November, do you do anything different as far as maintenance and course setup is concerned? Maintenance becomes more involved, with more frequent mowing three weeks before the tournament, earlier working hours, more fertilizer on the course and programs to get the green speed to the optimal speed. Attention to detail takes a lot of preference leading up to big tournaments like this.

5. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at St Francis Links to other parts of the country? We have cool season grasses on the fairways along with natural cynodon grass starting to slowly creep into the fairways. We welcome these natural grasses and do not try to fight it. Our rough is also partly rye and partly veldgrasses. This is because we have made the course more player friendly over the years by opening up more of the landing areas. Our greens are Dominent Bent and we have push-up greens instead of USGA spec greens.

After studying agriculture in Potchefstroom and in between jobs, I got involved at my home club, Springs Country Club (1998). Not knowing anything about greenkeeping, I was asked to help maintain the course which I gladly accepted. This was a great learning experience, not just learning about grass, but also learning so much about myself after being thrown in at the deep end. I did this for a year and then got the job at Stellenbosch Golf Club as assistant superintendent for the next two years after that, and in this time I did my turfgrass management course at Cape Technicon. I have never looked back; this is possibly one of the most rewarding careers that fell into my lap by chance.

2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

&

3. You are at St Francis Links, a coastal course, what is your biggest challenge maintaining a coastal course? Definitely the everchanging weather, especially the strong winds of this area. Every wind brings something different as well. Winds from the north bring extreme heat, Easterlies from the Ocean bring along weather more prone for disease on the greens and westerlies deposits a lot of my bunkersand everywhere except in the bunkers where it is meant to be.

6. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country? Yes, this will vary from course to course and will be determined by factors like steep cutting angles, types of grasses, and specific results that want to be achieved. Cylinder mowers give you a much cleaner Golf Course Superintendent St Francis Links

Best part is to see the fruits of your labour and to be part of this amazing industry. Worst part is when things do not go according to plan due to things out of my control, like weather. We always strive to present the best course we can to our members and customers.

1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

12. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later? Divots do not heal if you put the piece of grass back the next day, not on cool season grass. Creeping grasses should be ok, but the fact is that if you had any golf etiquette, you would put it back as soon as you hit the shot. Pitch marks on greens disappear when you fix it immediately, but if you leave that until the next day, the scar stays there for days and sometimes weeks.

8. To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it? Course setup is the responsibility of our pro’s, they do the setup on paper, and we set the course up accordingly. Slow play is a huge issue and on big golf days we will adjust the setup for a shorter, more player friendly course to speed up play.

cut than rotary mowers, but a club’s budget will also be a big factor when it comes to what and how many machines can be purchased.

11. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this?

What was first, the chicken or the egg? This doesn’t answer the question, but poa is something that can’t be beaten in my opinion. The fact that a poa seed can lie in the soil for many years and only germinate when conditions are favorable, makes this a super grass (weed). Golfers do spread the seed, but it takes one plant to produce thousands of small seedheads, and by mowing these plants the spread takes on turbo speed.

7. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance? Climate is possibly one of the biggest factors when it comes to how you approach maintenance. Hot humid weather will mean more staff hand watering greens for instance and in the winter we do not need much irrigation on our type of grasses. Climate determines what and when you spray for soil moisture, disease and weeds. We basically plan our maintenance according to the weather conditions at certain times of the year and adjust accordingly.

Yes, we deal with it when it happens. Every incident is different, but we deal with it on the spot. Mostly the golfers are in the wrong when this does happen, but they will never admit it.

9. In your opinion does course machinery or golfers spread more seeds like POA or diseases?

10. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance? Absolutely!

www.sagolftrader.co.zaSeptember | October 2022 85 SPECIAL FEATURE - ALL ABOUT GREENKEEPING

13. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? Having very fine dune sand in our bunkers, consistency is very difficult. When the sand is dry, the balls tend to plug a bit and when it is wet the surface becomes firm. I guess you play golf in its purest form at our course and play each shot as it comes. But the most important thing is to start every shot with a smile. Certain things are out of our control, but we do strive to make the things we can control better and better every day.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

I will continue to work with beneficial microbes which we are fortunately able to tank mix with our Syngenta fungicide range.

I still believe applying the right product at the right time is the more sustainable solution for our planet long term. Let us all be responsible in our choices at work & at home. I am grateful to Syngenta for spending billions of dollars & many years on each product ensuring that we have a sustainable future.

Top turf research scientists from around the globe shared their ideas & views. The theme of the event was sustainability & development. How do we grow the game of golf in a sustainable manor?

How do we communicate effectively to ensure law enforcements make sense & are ultimately going to be the most sustainable solution?

Starting with your soil testing remains critical – keep your nutrients in balance & then tie your IPM into this. Turf breeders are working hard to present new varieties which are more pest resistant & require less inputs. Gobi bermuda for instance requires very little fertilizer to product a great playing surface however Ibiza is very cold

After attending the International Turfgrass Conference 2022 in Copenhagen, Denmark I return with joy & hope for the future of our industry. This was my first global conference with most continents represented well at the event.

By: Sue de Zwart

For example, a few European countries are now banning pesticide use which may not be the most sustainable decision long term. Using a fungicide which will not harm your beneficial microbes may just be the better solution than using high rates of ferrous sulphate which may be more harmful long term. I honestly believe we should educate all sectors of agriculture, turf & landscape to make sustainable choices. The products which do not kill the beneficial microbes. Using ferrous sulphate for disease control (which these countries are now using without extensive testing) will not only throw the soil out of balance but may well have a very negative impact on the microbial populations. We need to understand the long-term effects of our actions. Many scientists at the event are concerned about this action which will lead to proper research.

October 2022 93 tolerant (uses less water than a cool season turf) and may be a nice option for our cooler regions. Costa is a great blend of the new generation tall fescues, rye & bermuda. Growing up your sedges & natural grasses around the pond edges is a great buffer. Introducing natural areas with water wise plants in 3-5 % of golf courses is becoming a common trend. I will continue to work on indigenous pollinator mixes for these areas. A nice combination of grasses, aloes & indigenous flowering plants work well. Mowing down the native areas in early spring or autumn every year keeps them in check. White clover is viewed as a pollinator? Will we welcome this weed on our golf courses? Seed companies are now breeding micro clovers which will become pollinators in our maintained turf areas – yes inter seeding clover into greens, tees & fairways. Let’s start with the corridors & out of play areas – this seems more practical. It is not a good time to be allergic to bees – we need to consider our clients & which pollinators we are wanting to attract to which areas!

It was incredible to be surrounded by so many people passionate about the golf industry & working hard to find sustainable solutions to ensure we can enjoy this incredible game in beautiful open areas for many generations to come. Our urban green spaces are critical & new (not now) exciting projects like Carbon Par allowing courses to figure out how to become carbon neutral. If you have any sustainable solutions, you would like to share with the industry I would love to hear about them. Anyone interested in coming on this journey the next event will be in Japan in 2025. I have the privilege of representing Africa & hope to at least match or one up Italy who had 7 delegates in Copenhagen. David Kau is known for being one of South Africa’s most popular stand-up comedians and he has been an MC at the pro-am dinner for the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series before. But the 18-handicapper had never actually played in the event before, and his excitement was palpable before his round. Mostly because, as he put it, he has “fallen in love” with golf. A lot of that love comes from the fact that golf helped him through the toughest of times during the Covid-19 pandemic. As an entertainer, he was particularly hard-hit.

HOW GOLF SAVED COMEDIAN DAVID KAU

“I only started playing golf three years ago, but now I’m like a mad man when it comes to the game,” Kau says.

“During Covid I did a lot of social media work with my 1.4 million followers across platforms, and I kind of survived. But there was never a live audience, so it’s not the same. I refuse to do stand-up comedy in front of a laptop because you never know what people are doing on the other side. “But golf, mentally, helped me so much when I was not making any money. Those four-to-five hour walks did a lot of good to me. It’s crazy, I’ve played eight times in the last two weeks because I have fallen in love with golf. Mentally continued on page 97...

But there was someone playing in the Highland Gate Pro-Am event last month who has been touched by the game in a special way.

As a comedian, Kau is aware that the smile on the face is not always indicative of the struggles going on in the interior of a person. Mental health issues are close to his heart, and he recognises the strain that formerly disadvantaged Black professionals can be under as they try to make it in a highly-competitive industry.

“I’ve done a lot of mental health work and before Covid I started getting involved with online therapists, doing podcasts and things. There is definitely a mental health connection to golf.

“Not many of us play better when we’re worried about something, and for black professionals it’s even more difficult. And you’re on your own out on the course, your coach or psychologist can’t walk on and help Theseyou. are guys who have to use public transport just to train, getting into a taxi with a golf bag. Mentally it’s amazing what sports people go through, but they can get adrenaline from the fans. But some of them play better with a big crowd and others get the jitters,” Kau said. Although it was his Vodacom Origins of Golf Series debut, Kau has played in other pro-ams before and certainly did not have the jitters around the magnificent Highland Gate layout, which provides a stern test nestled inside the Steenkampsberg mountains of Mpumalanga.

VODACOM ORIGINS AND SAGDB HELPING YOUTH GO

The generational success of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) was nowhere more clearly demonstrated than at the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at De Zalze Golf Club, where a golfer who years ago started with the SAGDB is now a coach in programmetheand has his own son enrolled in Reubenit. Adams stood on the driving range at De Zalze assisting with the Vodacom Origins of Golf clinic with the SAGDB golfers and Sunshine Tour professionals, and which included his son Sergio Japhets. It was a sight that brought a smile to the face of Shawn Adriaanse, the SAGDB Manager for the Bolandprovincialplaying“SergioRegion.hasbeenforBolandteamsfor a while now. His dad, Reuben, was himself an SAGDB player and was one of the players with whom we first started the programme in Riverside Worcester, inand now he’s a coach there and helping to coach SAGDB golfers,” said Adriaanse, who has seen so many success stories like this over the years.
