THE CARRIAGE HOUSE
PROJECT BRIEF: “Architecture is about giving form to the places where people live. It is not more complicated than that, but also not simpler than that.”
We inhabit and function in space, both manmade and the natural, i.e., “ a life spent within an enclosure”. These enclosures have functional and cultural meanings, and are symbols of abstract ideas of that period in time. The Carriage House was a residential project that was given to us in our II Semester Architectural Design Studio. The aim of this studio was to teach us spatial planning in close quarters and to recognize and plan for the human scale. The challenge is to understand user behavior towards built forms and to recognize the requirements of a multi-functional program with respect to aspects of locating the design program on site viz a vie light, movement etc.. The residence was to be designed for a family of five, spanning three generations- the grandparents, the parents and the teenage child. Each of them having different approaches to life and with varied tastes and interest. The residence is a culmination of five individuals, their tastes and points of views. The study of anthropometry played a major role in the design. The principle's of light, shadows, solids, voids, material textures and volumes were explored in the design. Old traditional houses were studied and given a contemporary twist, in order to bridge the generational gaps.
SITE: The site is located within the central core of Bangalore, in Frazer Town. The site sits alongside two main roads and contains a very old, dilapidated carriage house in the premises. The site is also well connected by public transport as the Trinity metro station is 4mins away. Site Area: 1400 sq.m. Max Built-up area: 3000 sqm (FAR- 2) Ground Coverage- 50%. For this plot, a minimum setback of 1.5 m on all sides shall be insisted.

PROJECT BRIEF: “That perfect tranquility of life, which is nowhere to be found but in retreat, a faithful friend and a good library.” Bengaluru today is a multi-cultural city with a population of over 10 million. The city is in the forefront of the IT and Manufacturing sector. Within the BBMP limits (City Corporation), open spaces constitute 2.69% of the total land area. Many of the city’s public spaces and buildings were developed during the Colonial era. Some of the Public Libraries in the city today are the State Central Library (Seshadri Iyer Memorial), Mythic Society Library and British Library, which are all Colonial typologies. In an age of high digitalization, experts are debating the effects of isolation of people from one another. In this context the city lacks a contemporary public library which reflects the cultural epoch we are in today. The objective of the studio is to create an iconic Library complex that will contribute to the culture of Bangalore either through Meta or Performative Architectural Design. Performative Architecture is the architecture, in which building becomes a living, breathing, consuming, excreting organism. Its Facade i.e., skin of the building will simultaneously resolve the structural, aesthetic, climatic requirements of the building. Its architectural expression, shall not be a static response to its context, but a dynamic one. It is architecture using digital technologies to challenge the way the built environment is designed. People move – Architecture stops. People desire- space defines. The designer as spatial programmer collects movements and desires and releases them into the conception of building explains Ben Anderson in his paper Performative Spaces-Platform for everyone.
SITE: The site is located within the administrative core of Bangalore, on Raj Bhavan road- facing Minsk square and along the major axis of the seat of power. The site sits alongside Architectural milestones of the city, like General Post office (Colonial) and Visvesvaraya Towers (Modern). The site is also well connected by public transport as the Cubbon Park metro station is right opposite. Coordinates: 12°58'54.9"N 77°35'46.2"E Site Area: 6864 sq.m. Max Built-up area: 15,444 sqm (FAR- 2.25) Ground Coverage- 45%. For plot over size of 4000 sq.m., a minimum setback of 5.0 m on all sides shall be insisted.

THE MYSORIAN AGORA
PROJECT BRIEF: “The more successfully a city mingles everyday diversity of uses and users in its everyday streets, the more successfully, casually its people thereby enliven and support well-located markets that can thus give back grace and delight to their neighborhoods instead of vacuity.” Caught up in the bustling crowds, drawn to the unbelievable sights, sounds, and smells of food, I knew at once I had arrived in the right place. Ahead of me lay a visual feast of color and textures that would make anyone smile. With my bags in tow, I set out to explore this age-old manifestation around which the city of Mysore revolved. The Devaraja Market is one of the oldest functioning markets in India. Built during the Colonial era. The aim of the studio was to scope out the market and its surroundings, and identify the weaknesses in the urban fabric, and to propose solutions for the same. The studio objective was to introduce the key components, terms, actors, processes and aspects of urban environment and their inter-relationships; to explore specific themes/issues such as public spaces, physical infrastructure, socio-cultural aspects (heritage, gender, urban growth, informality, place identity, collective memory, walkability, livability, zoning regulations) and the role of architecture in shaping the urban fabric. During the study, one particular part of the site area was in a very dilapidated condition- a building just down the road from the Devaraja Market, known as the Lansdowne building. So it was decided to redesign the rundown building, as well as the area behind it, further promoting a betterment in the urban streetscape as well as the public interaction. View of KR Circle

High-end Retail Shops on the Ground Floor and Public Library on the First Floor. Restoration and Rejuvenation of Lansdowne Building: My concept was based on the Connection between the Past, Present and Future of the Markets in India. There is a clear transition seen from Older, Traditional Market to the Modern Market. The future of the Market is showcased in the Visitor’s center and Art Gallery area.

Mysore is known for its Indo-Islamic architecture and also the Wodeyar Family had a lot of influence in the City's architectural character. Hence, Elements of the city can be found in the finer details like the Arched Colonnade's, the Jali Roofing etc. There is a juxtaposition of the new and the old, where the arched colonnade coincides with the glazed walls of the visitor’s center and the public library.

In order to promote this further, and to encourage more eco-friendly methods within the city, the Park in front of Lansdowne building has been redesigned in order to accommodate cycling enthusiasts. There are also Nodes provided for the morning activities of the hawker’s and vendors. A water recharge pond is present in order to harvest rainwater and also to add to the aesthetics of the park.

Towards one end of the park there is a rental cycle shop for those who want to enjoy the city and its major landmarks that are within the vicinity of the site.

A CENTER FOR THE SENSES
PROJECT BRIEF: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.” An encompassing environment has the power to influence and sway over an individual's moods, decision making capabilities, personality, social behavior and physical as well as mental health. This kind of environment is extremely beneficial for those who have undergone trauma and loss. Moving down this particular line of thought, leads to this thesis, to look into the requirements amongst a group of individuals, who need a safe space for physical and more importantly, psychological healing. The thesis, therefore decided to focus on people with acquired disabilities, between the age group of 18-60 years. By doing this, the aim is to not only provide a built solution, but also plug in a functioning program so that they can grow and re-establish human connections. Recognizing that people with disabilities, as a group, tend to have minimal opportunities, whether it be education, employment or health, it is our responsibility to carve a niche for them in our society.
My topic delves into the study on how perception varies in the case of the loss of a sense, whether sight, hearing, speech or movement. The main idea behind this center is to bring together the educational, vocational and healing facilities, which would help each age group to learn from each other and build a community of their own, and to be able to develop knowledge and confidence to live a life of independence and normality. The aim of the project is to design an Integration Centre for those who have acquired a disability due to an unforeseen circumstance and also to facilitate better interaction and understanding between the disabled and the society at large.

SITE- PROPOSAL AND ANALYSIS ABOUT THE SITE:
Site Location: Yelachenahalli Main Road, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Site Area: 33,296 sqm. • Located less than 200m away from Yelachenahalli Metro Station and the BMTC Bus Stop. • The site has a Hospital right next to it-Sri Sai Ram Hospital (<500m away). • The land use along the main road is mainly commercial and industrial. • A condiment industry is being planned for this site in the future. STRENGTHS • The site is located right next to the metro station and bus stop, hence accessible via public transport. • The site is located in a calm area, while still being in proximity to the urban fabric. • A lot of commercial activities takes place along the main road, interspersed with some well known institutions. • The back of the site is in proximity to a well established residential zone. WEAKNESSES • Noise from the main road due to metro rail and heavy traffic during peak hours. • The front portion of the site is being used as a two- wheeler parking zone. • No dedicated bus stop for the BMTC buses.

The exploration was based on the site. The site characteristics helped in designing many key features and applying the same to the overall layout, while limiting some possibilities, and at the same time exploring their design potential. The overall site planning was based around how to utilise maximum environmental and site features and dividing spaces into public and private zones.

The final layout includes a hierarchy of zones, from extrovert to introvert spaces. Between the zones, there is a series of spill out spaces that have been derived from the idea of a green spine.
EXPLORATION OF THE MATERIALS AND LIGHT: Each material feels different under the feet. Slate floors which catch the warmth of the sun are used in spaces which receive sunshine but is adequately shaded. Permeable pavers are used for spaces like, courtyards, and the pathways. Tactile markings on floor and walls help an individual navigate efficiently from one place to another using their sense of touch. Bright colours and textured wall paints can act as indicators on the function of a space.

The spine helps in connecting all the major activities on the site into a single whole. Movement is capitalised, which helps in easy navigation.

The spine caters to the aspect of way-finding with tactile and olfactory navigation tools such as different kinds of shrubs and textures. A green spine that connects all the major activities on the site further helps enhance the senses and also facilitates a healing atmosphere.

Apart from their strong sense of smell, trees can become prominent movement guides. The figures shown are some example of fragrant plants and trees that act as olfactory indicators and also have healing properties. The exploration was based on identifying their olfactory potential to act as a guide across the site. Trees have a universal character of acceptance. It is often seen that people form their own little communities around a tree. The trees helped in defining the boundaries of the Page 15 communal spaces in the scheme.
