Massed Precedent Intersection
The unity of chaos The collision of rectilinear and curvilinear planes
Top: Intersection where rectilinear and curvilinear planes are collided Left: Foamcore model
Rendered digital model of the final iteration
The extended planes are broken out of the form and tilted back inward, which create the form of dovetail joints, and also forms an in-between space that has both exterior and interior qualities.
There are two planes connected by a fillet, which creates a curvilinear horizontal arc on the surface of the object. This arc is proud of the rectilinear intersection corner.
The top part is solid and bold in shape with cleaves brake outward, which intersects the open vertical interior space. There are two indented columns separate. The top and the base of the object builds a sense of levitation; altering the idea that big and bold objects should be heavy. From the worm’s eye view, the planes are collided and transition from one to the other. The proud arch of the sharp intersection corners is connected to the arch of the base. This is a surprising transition for the eyes of the audience.
The transparent vertical interior space and cleave will invite light throughout the day. It will be a unique visual experience from any angle.
This park design retains all of the spatial qualities of the previous design stage. The unity of chaos. Harmony between rectilinear and curvilinear planes.
project 2:
Structure across a Pedestrian Intersection
The park was constructed in a dynamic way. There is a harmonious composition between the Primary and Secondary constructions within the architecture, which drives the hierarchy and helps pedestrians understand its circulation.
The clockwise circular motion of its circulation guides pedestrians through the building. The dynamic of the whole circulation drives pedestrians’ eyes around the construction. Pedestrians walk up from the ground floor to the elevated base of the structure.
Then they will encounter the primary structure of the building that is an elevation mass above their heads which evokes a sense of power. The elevated base is extended throughout the construction and leads pedestrians up the ramp to face another staircase that leads up to the secondary part of the construction which takes the same form as the primary one but with different heights and thicknesses. The extended coplanar of the primary structure, which formed a dovetail joint, transformed into the staircase connecting between primary and secondary structure.
Once pedestrians arrive at the upper level of primary construction, they can see the the whole park through the cleaves that breakout within its shape. After pedestrians are coming down to the ground level by passing through the ramp, they can go down to the south side of the pedestrians pathway by walk down the other ramp on the side of the park which will lead them down to the stairs that will take them to the ground level of the south side. Therefore, we can see that the whole experience are working the way from open spaces and narrow it down into an enclosed space; The compression of spaces.
project 3:
Community Center at North Berkeley
Community center for North Berkeley pedestrians Design promotes opportunities of engagement
This community center is design with the well-being of the pedestrians in mind. The contrast between the rectilinear elements of the facade and the curvilinear elements that are occur and colliding within the interior spaces create two opposite experiences between inside and outside spaces
The community center facade is very subtle on the outside with voids and doubled planes that indicated the stairs and ramp, implied the circulation of the architecture. The clockwise motion of the circulation makes the the doubling planes wrapped around the facade.
The collided planes that’s wrapped around users of the community center that provide both interior and exterior qualities. The main circulation is highlighted from the outside and the inside to promote health and let people use the stairs rather than elevator which is hidden behind building’s programs.
The experiences of “compressing of space give the hierarchy to the architecture. With the most open space on the ground level and the higher one gets, the smaller the space one will encountered. The hidden void within the mass create illusion of heavy object floating. The doubling planes which folded back and collided between
rectilinear and curvilinear were articulated from previous design stages. There are many open spaces that promote the sense of engagement for users to occupied and socialize throughout the whole building
