Implying the cube

This project is about combining lines and planes to form volumes and finally create a “balance” block which stands on an area of less than 2x2”. The sketch models are 6x6x6” and are done in plywood and foam. The final model is 12x12x12” and of poplar wood.

Following the balance block, a plaster model was developed by identifying and iterating a negative space from the former model. A wooden armature was then designed to hold the plaster cast in a way both models are integrated.

Emblematic drawing This project is a study of the various (architectural) elements of a space in a building on campus and how they affect one another. The building represented here is the Corbett Center for the Performing Arts and the staircase is located in its southwest corner, adjacent to a full two-storey glazing on the west. The floor plans are done in AutoCAD and the diagrams in Adobe Illustrator.

This drawing shows the various zones of the space and that people tend to stay longer (closely-spaced lines) either in places with more daylight (dark yellow) or places out of high traffic areas (wide-spaced lines). Done in gouache and ink on Stonehenge paper

Stairs with a view This is a modelling and rendering exercise in which we modelled a staircase in Rhinoceros 3D and chose a perspective to manually render.

Hotel seating area This is a perspective and rendering exercise where we could choose any interior space but had to combine manual and digital rendering. This space shows a hotel seating area with daylight flooding in from a courtyard. The foreground is done in ink and watercolor while the scenery outside the windows are added using Adobe Photoshop.

Pavilion promenade This is a group project involving 20 people. The task was to build a pavilion-like structure for people to walk through and sit in. For the first stage of the project, I extracted these plans and elevations from a Rhinoceros 3D model done by my team mates and dimensioned them in Adobe Illustrator. Next, I decided with two other team members how to group the separate pieces to facilitate construction, transport and deconstruction.

A space for exploration

The modular house involved an understanding of our own body proportions and the dimensions of various poses. From there we created a section view of an abstract space (on the opposite page). My intention was to create a space for reading and crawling to encourage child-like exploration. This wes further developed into a few smaller, separate spaces represented by the diagrams at the bottom. They were ultimately combined into one integrated living space shown by the wooden model. The floor plans were influenced by our own modular units (square grid on right) and the height of the model on a custom-made stand was also the same as our individual height. Opposite: collage on Black Canson paper Below and upper right: diagrams done in Adobe Illustrator

Film photography This interest in analogue photography started early 2014. These photos are taken with the Sprocket Rocket film camera. Four of them show buildings that I like in Singapore and one of them is a seaside view at Nassau, Bahama. In all of these photos, I was experimenting with perspective, composition and color as well as making full use of the panoramic lens of the camera.

In All Seriousness 2011 Oil on canvas Submitted for the 2011 UOB Painting of the Year

You must do everything in all seriousness: Performing in all seriousness. The serious performer must not let the serious audience down. Listening in all seriousness. The serious audience must not let the serious performer down. Painting in all seriousness. The serious artist must not let the serious viewer down. Appreciating in all seriousness. The serious audience must not let the serious artist down. I say these in all seriousness. But should you take my words in all seriousness?

We Aim

We Aim For A’s But Land Among Treacherous Grades, 2012, Cut-up rubrics for studio art, acrylic paint and digital rendering. This is a conceptual artwork expressing the difficulty and trickiness in hitting ambiguously expressed exam expectations.
