publishers note Welcome to the Girl Power issue of the South Asian Health magazine! We are very excited to do a cover feature on three local B.C. South Asian women who are making a mark in the fitness/bodybuilding industry. We’re positive that you will enjoy reading about their journey and path to success, as each of them have overcome obstacles in their own right.

If you are interested in participating or supporting the SA Health Expo and charity basketball game in any capacity, please call me (the organizer) Rina Gill at 778 688 4973 or email: rina@thehypeadagency.com

We are also excited to share with you a story of a young, local B.C. girl who recently played on an ALL BOYS hockey team as a goalie. Women and girls are definitely breaking barriers and we are honoured to share their stories as role models while celebrating International Women’s Day with you.

South Asian Health Magazine always strives to provide a variety of information, resources and inspirational stories from the health, wellness and fitness industry. Our goal is to always be on top of the latest news and trends, as well as continuously providing education and awareness to the SA community regarding possible medical conditions they are predisposed to. We have some exciting community event news to share with you! The next South Asian Health Expo - Youth Edition will be taking place on Sunday, May 15th from 11am to 4pm at Surrey City Hall. There will be a variety of vendors on-site from the health, wellness and fitness industry. This particular Expo will be focusing on youth and young adults in our community since it’s never to early to be proactive about taking care of your health. Another fun aspect of the Expo on May 15th is the charity basketball game which will take place in the outside Plaza area of Surrey City Hall at 2pm, along with a fitness skills competition and half time show featuring local artists. We are also in the process of securing an inspirational South Asian athlete to join us for this year’s Expo. This initiative will raise funds for 2 well connected non-profit community organizations: South Asian Arts and Sahaara Foundation. Stay tuned for more information and exciting announcements in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

SENSORY DEPRIVATION & FLOTATION THERAPY

Flotation therapy, or more simply floating, is the most incredible means of stress relief and relaxation available today. Each float tank contains 800 L of water with over 850 pounds of dissolved Epsom salts. This solution allows you to float effortlessly on the water’s surface. Once settled in the tank, with the water and air heated to skin temperature (94.0 F), it is virtually impossible to distinguish between parts of the body that are in contact with the water, and those that are not. This in effect gives you the sensation of floating in midair. And finally, the elimination of all light and sound creates the ultimate sensory-free environment the universe has been reduced to you.

Young Athlete Profile: Alicia Narain

I remember the love for the game started while watching hockey when I was only 3 years of age with my dad Mike. He has a true passion for the game. In 2006 we moved to New Westminster in the neighborhood of Queensborough on Wood Street. It is a small neighborhood community where

everyone seems to know everyone. Not soon after we had moved to New Westminster, my dad and Uncles Chris and Steve decided to set up a hockey net on WORLD FAMOUS Wood Street and play street hockey. We didn’t really have anyone to play net and basically my dad said to me “Here, hold this stick and just stand here in net. When the ball comes you stop it from going in” All I had was a wooden player stick and running around trying to stop the ball. Not long after I my uncle Chris bought me a street hockey goalie set for my birthday. I put on the gear and stood inside the net. I’m not gonna lie, I really enjoyed it! When I was 12 years old and I asked my dad if I could play ice hockey as a goalie. He was surprised that I wanted to play but quickly signed me up anyways with the New Westminster Minor Hockey Association.

SOUTH ASIAN HEALTH MAGAZINE | WINTER/SPRING 2016 | 7TH EDITION

Most kids had been playing at a young age, and I was starting my first season of hockey in PeeWee. I remember the very first time I went on the ice during the season warm up in 2013/14 season. I could barely skate and somehow I managed to make it towards the coach’s direction when I stepped out on the ice. All the coaches kind of looked at me funny since I was the only one out there that couldn’t skate. Nobody really wanted me on their team because I was so bad and I need a lot of work. I can’t really blame them as I wouldn’t want me neither on their team. I really NEEDED A LOT of work! After we came home from the warm up, my dad asked me if I still wanted to play with the boys in New Westminster or if I wanted to be reassigned to an all-girls team somewhere else. There were some concerns from the association that I would be picked on or bullied by the boys and being the only girl goalie I might not really have enjoyment. As my family and friends know me I’m very stubborn person and I said I wanted to continue playing with New West and didn’t really care what happened. I guess you could say that I get my stubbornness and strength from my mom Rohini. I just wanted to try to learn the game as fast as I could and wanted to try my best every time I got the chance. I had amazing coaches in my first season (Jason B, Ray P. and Al M.) and I was partnered up with Keegan Melenychuk. Keegan instantly became my mentor. My dad didn’t waste any time and quickly signed me up at Ron Veits goalie training. I quickly learned the basics from Veits and my goalie partner Keegan, and started looking like a goalie that has been playing for at least 1 season. My coaches had a lot to do with my confidence and I never once felt like anyone cared much at all that I was now the only rookie brown girl goalie playing with the boys in the league. All my team mates stood strong with me and I was accepted by the New Westminster association with open arms. From my parents, Coaches, management and team parents, I have had nothing but support of how well I’ve done so far and it’s such a great feeling. In my first months of playing, my PeeWee team and I

won the Gold in the North Shore tournament in 2013. We also came really close in that first season to win the Banner. In 2014/15 season I headed into Bantam season. It was like my first time out all over again, going into another level. There were discussions again about if I would be able to handle the tough shots from older boys – but again me being stubborn I said I’m still playing for the Royals! In my second year Hockey I was again with great coaches (Wayne M and Bob T.) and again with my mentor Keegan. We had an up and down season but again I was treated exactly the same and the association supported me right through. This is now my third year and I’m playing my second year Bantam with coaches (Kevin G., Eric J. and now my dad Mike). I again got partnered up with my third straight year with my mentor Keegan. We just won the gold in the Coquitlam Winter tournament. I feel that winning two tournaments in just my 2 ½ years is an accomplishment in itself. Some kids play forever and never win a tournament, I feel very lucky and fortunate to play in such a great association. I’ve been in two BC girls U14 and U16 tryouts and have one more try at it. I’ve thought about playing again in New Westminster but to further my goals I think I will be moving to an all-girls team next season. But I’m really sad to be moving away from my New Westminster Royals family where it all started. My goal in life is to play for the Canada Women’s Hockey team in the Olympics, and also one day to become a sports broadcaster. I want to also help others like me that wish to play the game not to worry about their skill level, age, color, creed or gender.

I DID IT! It wasn’t easy but with all the support from the association, players, coaches, managers, parents, and hard work put in it was all worth it. Anyone at any time can join up to play this game.

SMILEBAR The Smile Bar System could very well be the best professional teeth whitening system on the market today. Our system is a professional light-activated teeth whitening system that combines the strongest, freshest gels with our high-powered Futura™ 2400 blue LED teeth whitening light. We recommend 2 treatments of 20 minutes each (done in 1 appointment). The first application mostly just opens the pores in the enamel. The second application begins to visually whiten the teeth. We recommend following up with a take-home kit or pen to prevent color regression and further enhance the results. And finally, we recommend the customer purchase Minerals Enamel Booster to seal in the results, alleviate any tooth sensitivity they may experience (if any), and to remineralize and strengthen their enamel. How many shades lighter will my teeth become? That depends upon many factors including how white your teeth are to begin with. Someone with a whiter shade won’t reach 8 shades lighter, but in our experience the appearance is brighter and clients are pleased. If your teeth are more yellow in color they can lighten several shades. We offer the following products as well: Forever White – Teeth Whitening Pen: The Forever White™ Teeth Whitening Pen has advanced gel that whitens BETTER and with LESS sensitivity than competing brands. It’s so convenient and easy to use: just smile and brush on some gel. Teeth get whiter with each application. It’s perfect for touch-ups and on-the-go whitening. Wine Wipes: made with all natural products to remove red wine stains(left by the tannins in the wine) from teeth while protecting the enamel from acids in wine. Wine Wipes were developed to ensure the flavoring does not interfere with wine tasting. With Wine Wipes, you can continue to drink wine because the orange blossom flavor will not ruin your palate.

Pearly Wipes: made with all natural products to remove coffee stains. These are peppermint flavored and come in compacts with a mirror, similar to the wine wipes so that they are easy and convenient to use. Tooth Gloss: A clear protective gloss that gives the appearance of a whiter smile and protects from stains. The product works by providing a shiny coat giving the appearance of a whiter smile. Tooth Gloss is non-abrasive and shown to protect against unsightly stains and delivers fresh breath all day long. Lip Gloss: This gloss is sure to make your smile beautiful and kissable. Luscious peptides plump the lips while the blue undertones make your smile appear brighter and whiter. The subtle minty flavor gives your smile a fresh and clean feel. Daily Teeth Whitening Foam: Daily White™ Fusion™ teeth whitening foam is a onestep, dual-action micro-foaming formula that cleans and whitens teeth better than ordinary whitening toothpaste. Daily White leaves your breath nice and fresh, promotes healthy gums, and tastes great, too. Mineral Enamel Booster: Minerals™ Enamel Booster is a great tasting remineralizing and desensitizing gel. Remineralizing gel significantly increases the micro-hardness [1] of tooth enamel after teeth whitening which helps seal in the whitening results by sealing out stains. It replenishes minerals such as fluoride and calcium which are lost over time, but especially after a teeth whitening treatment. It also helps to prevent and alleviate tooth sensitivity.

As a registered, and licensed Dental Hygienist in B.C., for the past twenty years; I am able to practice independently. The only stipulation is that the client needs to have seen a dentist at least once within the year. Regular dental hygiene visits to remove plaque and tartar are very important for your oral health as well as your overall health. Many systemic diseases are linked to poor oral health such as heart disease, diabetes, and preterm low-weight babies. Some signs of poor oral health include bleeding gums, bad breath, and “loose” or mobile teeth. Not having your teeth cleaned every 3 to 6 months may lead to bone loss and periodontal disease. On your initial visit we will assess your general overall health and decide on a treatment plan that will be individualized for your oral care needs. We will also make any suggestions and referrals necessary for any dental work that may be required. We will provide advice on different treatment options, to help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.

The Care Centre NightShift Street Ministries is a strong arm for the vulnerable civilians in our society that reaches out and lends support in many ways. Every night of the year, volunteers serve a hot meal, provide a change of clothes, offer care packages and other outreach help. Twice a week, volunteer nurses and counselors provide additional mobile resources from our Care Bus. Overseeing the counseling support at NightShift for all people in the community is The Care Centre. Besides helping people without a home or struggling with poverty, our counseling centre is open to anyone – regardless of background or financial status – who is feeling emotionally or spiritually broken, whose uncontrollable emotions do not make sense to them. Life-changing circumstances like divorce or death, or the daily struggles of living with physical pain or mental diseases – these can happen to anyone, but no-one should have to struggle on his or her own. With therapy these issue could become less emotionally and physically stressful. Overseeing the counseling support at NightShift for all people in community is The Care Centre. Clients to The Care Centre have access to licensed counselors from different ethnic backgrounds, with different life experiences and education, including masters’ degrees in counseling psychology. One of our South Asian counselors speaks fluent Punjabi and Hindi and her passion is to better educate and emotionally support her community through therapy, workshops and support groups. All the counselors are well equipped to support clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, family issues, separation or divorce, substance abuse, addiction, grief or abuse recovery. For women who endure physical or mental abuse we offer a

women’s support group called “When Love Hurts”. Abuse was the subject of our “Unmasking the Truth” event for women this past year. Our next women’s event, which takes place on Monday, March 7th, 2015, will deal with “Beauty Beyond the Pain”. We not only help women, but men too. The Care Centre psychologist has years of experience facilitating behavioural management groups for men. She also helps clients with relationship difficulties, chronic pain conditions, managing stress induced by grief and loss, and adjusting to life changes. Our mission to educate means we will be expanding our programs to reach at-risk youth. We aim to provide support to young people who turn to drugs, join gangs, and end up in funeral homes. At The Care Centre we believe that therapy is not about changing a client or about telling a person not to feel emotions such as anger, shame or guilt. The focus of our mental health professionals is to teach clients how to cope with those emotions and better manage them. There is a mutual understanding that while we can all feel anger or anxiety at times, we all function differently, lead different lives and face different situations. Through all these situations, you need not be alone. Whether you are dealing with mental health issues or are supporting a brother, sister, wife or mother who is, you can connect with us at 604-953-1154 or email us at confidential@ thecarecentre.org. Your mental health is just as important as your physical wellbeing. Like getting a haircut, brushing your teeth or having a shower, your overall health needs regular maintenance. Contact Kristina Sohal to book a free initial consultation or find out more about our programs at www.TheCareCentre.org and www.NightShiftMinistries.org.

COVER MODEL: BINDI BAINS My name is Bindi Bains Mackoruk and I am 45 years old. I am married and have two children. My boys are 14 and 10. I am the second of three daughters and my parents have both deceased. Growing up, I was the unfit, unhealthy child. I started to put on weight in high school but didn’t think anything of it as health and fitness were not a big priority for me back then nor were they promoted much in the media. It wasn’t until my late teens/ early twenties that I decided to make a change. I just got tired of the way I looked and I wanted to get fit and become more healthy. I changed a few things in my diet and started going to the gym. I lost a bunch of weight and started looking and feeling better. I became a part time group fitness instructor too. Although I was in much better shape, there wasn’t much muscle but rather just a thin, slender body. My bodybuilding journey didn’t begin until I turned 35. After the birth of my first son, the weight came back and I was once again unhealthy and unhappy. I was so overwhelmed with motherhood that I did not have the motivation or time to work out or eat healthy. In December of 2001, when my son was 6 months old, I watched a video of me that changed my life forever. I was shocked at who I had become and needed to get my body back! And that is exactly what I set out to do. Except, what started out as an attempt to lose my baby weight, turned into so much more. My body responded like never before. I had abs, I could definition in my arms and more. I couldn’t believe how a healthy diet and regular training could do all that for me. During one of my workouts one day I saw some girls posing and found out that they were preparing for a bodybuilding competition. I was in awe of them and wondered what it might be like for me. I decided that day that I too, would do a competition one day. I continued to be dedicated to training and turned it into a lifestyle. The following year I became pregnant with my second son and that delayed my decision to compete for the next few years. I started to prepare for my first competition as my son was nearing one year of age and in November 2006 I stepped on stage for the first time. I was 35 years old, and I brought home 4 trophies that night. They say that your first show will set the tone for your future in competing. Some people enjoy the experience but decide once is enough and choose not to compete again. Others get hooked! For me, it was the latter and I’ve never looked back!

SOUTH ASIAN HEALTH MAGAZINE | WINTER/SPRING 2016 | 7TH EDITION

Being a competitive bodybuilder comes with a fair share of challenges. One of my toughest has been to balance my show prep with my family life. Having two kids and a husband who follow a different diet then mine can make things a bit crazy at home. Also, since the training and posing classes require much time, I’m often gone from home a lot and this combined with a full time job leaves very little quality time with my family. A new challenge I’m facing now is dealing with being a 45 year old in this industry. Although I’m a firm believer that age is just a number, it does affect my time left in this sport. Since I started competing at a much larger age then many women out there today, I’m faced with the challenge of achieving my competitive goals sooner than later. The competition becomes stronger each year and I’m noticing girls are entering competitions younger and younger. As a South Asian woman, I have been blessed to have had tremendous support not only from my family, but from the community as a whole. Both my parents were very open minded and accepting about my decision to compete and they supported me during every show and came to watch me whenever possible. Unfortunately, I lost them both during the past few years but I know they are still behind me 100%. My husband and kids along with my two sisters are also a big part of my support system. My husband, although not a huge fan of my competing, fills my void with my kids when needed. I don’t know if I could make it through competition prep if not for him. The community has also been very receptive of me being a competitive bodybuilder. Although I may look different than the average South Asian woman, I am still a true “Desi” inside. Anyone who knows me knows how close I am with my culture and how proud I am to be Indian. Members of my community commend my achievements all the time and I am honoured to represent the South Asian community as competitive bodybuilder and fitness leader. I have also been blessed with many accolades as a fitness professional and competitor. I’ve received awards from Team Punjabi on ONMI TV for my participation on the show as a fitness expert and also for being a role model in my community. I received a Shakti award last year for Athletic Achievement and a Drishti award for Outstanding Athlete in our community. I have been featured on the cover and inside as a profile person of several magazines for my achievements and contributions in the fitness industry. I have also done many interviews and continue to do regular fitness segments of various community channels. As for my competitions, I have

been fortunate enough to place top five in each competition I have entered. My most recent achievements in bodybuilding include a first place title in my category of Women’s Figure 2012, 2013 and 2014. I hope to keep up that record this year at the 2016 National Championships in August. On a personal level, my future plans include spending more time with my family. As much as fitness is a big part of my life, it isn’t the most important. My first priority, although not obvious at times, are my boys and my husband. I would like to expand my fitness company and perhaps open my own studio again. As far my life of bodybuilding goes, I am preparing for the 2016 CBBF Nationals taking place here in Vancouver this August. I hope to obtain my PRO card which I have been working towards for many years now. A procard will not only change my status in the world of bodybuilding, but more importantly, it will make one of my long-term dreams come true. I will have to see if this is my year. Some words of wisdom I’d like to share with the readers are to follow your dreams but be realistic about them. Anything is achievable, but don’t compromise yourself or others to achieve it. Never give up on your goals, even if it takes years to attain them. Be humble, and never forget the people along the way who helped you get to where you are. Everyone gets what they are meant to receive, if your time has not come yet, be patient, as it will.

SOUTH ASIAN HEALTH MAGAZINE | WINTER/SPRING 2016 | 7TH EDITION

COVER MODEL: Harpreet Pandher Tell us about your background/personal life and what inspired you to get into bodybuilding/fitness shows? I’m a small town girl born and raised in Fort St. James BC. I moved to Surrey when I turned 18 years old. After living in Surrey for a few years, I applied into a nursing career and completed my Bachelor’s IN Psychiatric Nursing. To be honest there was no strategically planned path that I took to get into the fitness industry. I was that skinny girl who had very low self esteem and used to look up to fitness icons such as Alicia Marie or Jennifer Nicole Lee in magazines. I used to think that if I could achieve a body like these women, that I would be more confident and happy. I knew in my heart that this was something I really wanted to pursue. In 2011, I contacted a local trainer to work on my physique and he talked me into doing my first fitness show. I was fortunate to place first overall and receive my Pro card status in 2011, being the 2nd South Asian woman in the world with this status at that time. After my accomplishment I was more intrigued than ever to remain in this industry and allow myself to guide others who share similar interests in fitness. What were some of the challenges you had to overcome in this industry? Well, I think starting in anything there are always challenges that we must overcome. It’s those challenges that allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and be able to mentally and physically push myself to succeed. I had to do a lot of research in the industry by networking with people. I think the biggest challenge in competing for me was finding the right coach to work with in my prep. A lot of coaches out there provide cookie cutter diets which can cause problems such as metabolic damage. It was really challenging for me to find a coach that understood my vision and respect my health. As a South Asian woman, did your family and the community as a whole gave a hard time accepting this passion of yours? I think when I first started it was definitely not easy as there were not many South Asian women in this industry and it wasn’t the “norm” to pursue a passion such a bikini fitness in the our culture. There was definitely times when I was scrutinized for standing on stage in a bikini as not a lot of

SOUTH ASIAN HEALTH MAGAZINE | WINTER/SPRING 2016 | 7TH EDITION

people understood the dedication and hard work it takes to stand on stage in your top conditioned physique. Of course this didn’t stop me from further continuing in my journey in fitness but through Social media I was able to share my challenges and achievements with others and educate them on what fitness really means. I looked past the cultural barriers and continued to strive in what I believed in and over time I believe the community has evolved and shown so much more positive support and respect for what I do. I think my greatest achievement in the industry is that I am an advocate for women to follow their passion and dreams and know that cultural barriers can be overcome. I truly believe in women empowerment and I want to continue to encourage women and also men to be healthy, fit and confident and achieve their goals/dreams. I want to show this by being an example of someone who makes her health a priority while still having a career and healthy personal life. Being recognized and supported for being a South Asian Fitness role model to so many individuals to me is such a great accomplishment. To me there is nothing more rewarding than being able to share my story and being told it helped inspire someone to make a positive and healthy change towards achieving their goals. What are some of the accolades you have received in your industry? Well as I said before in 2011 when I competed in my first fitness show ever I placed first overall and received my Pro card status. Over the years I switched over to the BCABBA federation and in May 2015 I placed first and overall at the BCABBA Northern Classic show in Fort St. John as well as placed first and overall title in the BCABBA Provincial OPEN Bikini Championships which took place in Vancouver BC qualifying me as a National Competitor now for life. I will be competing at the CBBF Canadian Nationals in Winnipeg this coming July 2016. I have been fortunate enough to have been sponsored by companies some of the top Nutrition Companies in the Industry and now I am currently sponsored by Livify and Training Day Café. These sponsorships mean a lot to me as it shows me I am a recognized and respected for my passion. Being a committee member of the She Talks Health & Fitness and speaking for my second year in a row on women empowerment for International Women’s Day.

What are some of your future goals? Personally and professionally. Currently I am preparing for the CBBF Nationals taking place on July 18th, 2016 in Winnipeg so going for that IFBB Pro card! I have so many long term goals. I want to continue to build my name in the Health & Fitness Industry exploring different avenues and working towards being more main stream. I want to open all the doors not just in the Fitness industry and explore the different avenues I have in mind. Having an entrepreneur partner, he has really encouraged and inspired me to pursue the business aspects of things so with his support I’m working on some things on my own as well as with him. Fitness, however is always going to be my biggest passion and part of my lifestyle. Personally my goals are to start a family and always continue to strive to be the best that I can be in every aspect of my life. I want my family, close friends and one day children to always be proud of the woman I am and continue to evolve into. Any words of wisdom you would like to share with our readers? To always speak your truth even if your voice shakes and never sacrifice your integrity. To be yourself always, walk your path confidently and don’t expect that others will always understand your journey because this is the vision you were given. Smile at those who try to begrudge or hurt you along the way and show them what they are missing in their life by continuing to pursue your goals. And through your journey’s ups and downs, keep a positive attitude and smile knowing that you are always being redirected through these shifts in life towards the next step you are meant to take.

COVER MODEL: ROBYN GILL Tell us about your background/personal life and what inspired you to get into bodybuilding/fitness shows? I’ve had a very challenging upbringing and have suffered with a lot of loss in my life. At the age of 17, my mother took her own life as she had a mental illness known as bipolar. From there I became an aggressive teenager, angry with what had happened and started getting involved with the wrong people. Soon after her death, I was involved with gangs which ultimately led me on a downward spiral of gang violence, self abuse/harm and depression. At the age of 24, I realized this wasn’t the person my mother had raised me to become and I was causing so much pain for my father that I vowed to no longer continue to be involved with these people or continue hurting others around me, including myself. In June 2013, my father had a sudden fall where he hit his head and passed away within 24 hours. Just like THAT the only other person I had was gone. Without warning, without a proper goodbye... my daddy was taken from this earth. The pain in my heart and my depression skyrocketed and I couldn’t see through my sadness. 3 months after his passing, my grandmother passed away. 3 months after my grandmother’s passing one of my best friends was murdered and 3 months after that, my grandfather suddenly passed away. I had lost 4 IMPORTANT people in my life within a matter of 9 months and in April 2013, depression had taken its toll. I had decided that this life wasn’t worth living for and that I could no longer live with this pain, so I decided to take my own life. On the day I was about to kill myself, I laid in my bed crying and all of a sudden asked myself one question. Knowing that I would be ending my entire being and that there would be more no more of me after that moment, this one question came to mind “If you could do ANYTHING in the world right now, what would it be?” The answer was simple. My one constant through my depression was the gym. No matter how sad I felt, I ALWAYS made it to the gym. It was the only place where I felt sane and that nothing could happen to me. If I was able to do ONE thing in the world... it would be TO BE ABLE TO STAND ON

THE WORLDWIDE BODYBUILDING STAGE KNOWN AS THE OLYMPIA! This was a dream and a goal that seemed so far fetched, it was ultimately impossible. BUT I was going to die anyways, so WHY NOT try and do the one thing that I think I can’t? In a matter of moments I would be lying in the ground as a corpse anyway. Instead of killing myself that day... I decided to change my life! I CHOSE to live for ME and do anything that made me happy. I quit my job as an insurance broker, left the relationship I was in and started setting small personal goals for myself. I saw a counselor twice a week for months to help me deal with my grief. Everyday became a small battle, but every night became an even bigger accomplishment because I made it. 6 months later I entered my 1st bodybuilding competition in Nov 2013 and placed 2nd place... my world has never been the same since.

What were some of the challenges you had to overcome in this industry? The most challenges that I’ve had to overcome in this industry are defeating the stereotypes - This is an everyday challenge that occurs for any women in this industry. Every person has their own opinion on what they think you should look like and how you should present yourself but the truth is - what they think truly doesn’t matter! I’ve heard it all, “She’s TOO muscular” “She looks like a man” “EW She’s Gross” - At first you would hear these things and they make you feel sad. No matter what they’re saying the words are HURTFUL and it’s a form of bullying. As time went on I realized that it didn’t matter what anyone thought of me. It didn’t matter what things they were saying about me. What mattered was HOW I FEEL about me and that is the ONLY thing that continues to matter. As a South Asian woman, did your family and the community as a whole have a hard time accepting this passion of yours? I’ve been very blessed with the amount of SUPPORT I’ve had from my family and the community. With the loss of my parents, my family has seen me go through the worst and we all know that had my decision been different in April 2013, I wouldn’t be here today. They want me to be healthy and happy and if that means to support my goals and watch me chase them, then that is what they promise to do. After my 1st bodybuilding show, my story was aired on Punjabi Sports on Omni TV and the feedback was incredible. After hearing all the hardship I had been through, our community embraced me with open arms and was proud of what I was doing and making out of my life. To this date, I’ve had tons of south asian parents reaching out to me and thanking me for sharing my story. They’ve expressed that they find me a great role model for their kids and hope that their children will continue to find strength within themselves even when they are gone. I’ve also had numerous teens reaching out thanking me for sharing who I am and advising me that they’ve made better personal decisions to pursue their dreams rather than get involved with gangs, alcohol or drugs. What are some of the accolades you have received in your industry? In April 2013, I competed at my 1st show and placed 2nd place. In June 2014, I competed for the BC Provincial Championships

where I placed 4th. In March 2015, The Vancouver Province commend me on Internationals Women’s Day and shared my journey as their Sunday Front page story. In July 2015, I competed for the best of Canada at the CBBF Nationals in Halifax and placed 1st place in our country!! With great honor, I was also given the Superstar Award from our community and Team Punjabi Sports in Aug 2015. I have also been sponsored by 2 brands: Beyond Yourself & Gorilla Wear Canada. My image has been used in multiple ads and magazines which is very exciting! What are some of your future goals? Personally and professionally. My goal is still to make it to the worldwide Olympia stage. It is never a question of IF, just WHEN. It is a process of multiple shows and tier systems but with my past success, I do believe that dreams are real and I will be on that stage next year! I currently have a very successful personal training business but my goals are to own my own gym. After 2017, I’d like to settle down and start having a family. Family is everything and this goal is just as important as all the rest. Any words of wisdom you would like to share with our readers? If there is any words of wisdom I could share with you, is that this life is YOURS! You have the ability to do anything you want to do, be anything you want to be and feel any way you want to feel! There is no such thing as “I can’t” because we all can. If you want something - go for it. The sky IS the limit and you are the only one holding yourself back. 3 years ago, I was the girl who lost everything, had nothing and was about to end everything. Today I’m the girl you see in magazines, on TV and chasing my goals with passion. You are YOU - so BE YOU!

ABOUT JIVANA There is only a 4% chance of finding a donor if someone is South Asian. Why? Because, The key requirement for a successful organ transplant is that both the donor and recipient share the same blood type.

SOUTH ASIAN HEALTH MAGAZINE | WINTER/SPRING 2016 | 7TH EDITION

But blood types are not equally distributed among all ethnic groups. Most of the South Asian community share the same blood type, which is blood type B. The shortage of type B organs is due to the fact that South Asian descents are a lot less likely to be organ donors. Jivana Organ Donation Society’s mission is to raise awareness in the south Asian community about the importance of being an organ donor, to educate people on the organ transplant process, eliminate cultural beliefs and myths in the south Asian community which also prevents many from putting their names on the organ donation registry and encourage donors to come forward. Jivana Organ Donation society is an organization founded by 4 individuals who are transplant recipients and have gone through the mental and physical obstacles themselves. They want to be the support for the other South Asians who may be on the waiting list or going through post transplant recovery.

Master Chef Canada contestant Jasdeep Sra Tell us about your family background. Well my family is from Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India. My parents moved here a couple years after marriage to Richmond, and a year or so after that I was born. I was a single child up until I was 10 years old and that’s when my brother was born in 2005. Growing up seeing my dad cook and mom cook really gave me the foundations of cooking and just growing up I would always try and mirror my dad. After they broke up, and my mom, me and my brother moved to Abbotsford, my role model became my mom’s older brother. He loved to experiment with food and try new things, and he got me hooked on always playing with your food. Whether it be adding certain masalas to your food or cooking meat with different types of fats... I even have vivid memories of when he would get tandoori chicken from the market, but he would never be satisfied by just cooking that. He always wanted to add different masalas and herbs and try to make the meat more tender rather than charred... And off that I started mirroring him and I wanted to marinate chicken myself so I did. At the age of 11 or 12 I would tell my mom to buy chicken and I would experiment so much with it, whether it be adding masalas or different way to cook it, and people were amazed at the fact I was cooking so well. My mama was honestly one of the bigger inspirations in life to cook, whether it be from cooking salmon steaks to even something as small as maagi noodles, it would never be just average. That’s a little bit about my family background and how it shaped me. What sparked your passion for cooking? What sparked my passion for cooking is mostly my mama (mom’s older brother). He was honestly a big role model for me because my parents separated when I was at such a young age, and that’s usually the age you start looking up to your dad but he wasn’t really there. So my mama became that figure to me and I’d try to mirror him as much as possible. Whether it be cooking or playing hockey. And what really grew my passion for those things is that it would’ve been one thing if I did those and I didn’t turn out to be good at them, but the thing was I was amazing at those things. I loved hockey as a kid and cooking was my pastime after hockey. I remember so vividly that I wanted gol gappay when I was about 12 years old. So my mom being the mom she is asked

if she could grab the ones from fruiticana, and I responded saying no, those are too hard. So rather than me giving up, I thought “Why don’t I just make these on my own?” So I pulled up the recipe on the internet and next thing you know I started making gol gappay at home. My mom was amazed at how well they turned out, and at that point I realized I can do this. How did you hear about Master Chef Canada and what inspired you to participate? I heard about MasterChef Canada a while ago. I used to watch MasterChef all the time. Whether it be the Indian, American or Canadian version, I’ve watched a bit of all of them. But what really inspired me to participate and put in an application was my girlfriend. I suffered an almost fatal injury back in May of 2015 where I could’ve lost my life, but with God’s blessings I survived. But then after that, all I was doing was laying in a bed trying to rehab, not going to the gym or work. So my girlfriend said “Why don’t you apply for MasterChef Canada, I saw their commercial on TV and they were looking for applications.” At first I was hesitant, thinking they’re never going to pick me, but then she eventually made me apply telling me that every dish I make is unique and different and way above average. Next thing you know they loved my application and I was auditioning for MasterChef Canada. Obviously they loved everything about me and I was selected to be in the top 40 in Canada! How would you describe your experience on the show? My experience on the show was life changing. I made some friends for life on the show and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. We were truly getting the movie star treatment, it’s something a kid like me coming from a home with a single mom and living in basement had never seen before. It was truly humbling. Can you give us any inside scoop on what to expect? Expect some great food. These are the top 40 home cooks in a Canada and I promise you, you will not be disappointed. Just don’t watch the show if you’re hungry because you’ll probably end up emptying your whole fridge. What are your future aspirations? My future aspiration is to one day call myself a great chef and have an amazing restaurant. I truly just want to be successful in the future, not just for me, but for my mom and brother

too. My mom has seen it all being a single mom having three minimum wage-paying jobs to raise three kids. It’s hard, you’ll never know how much a mom will truly do for her kids, until it gets to those points in life. I want to be successful so in the future she doesn’t have to even lift a finger. She’s worked too hard her whole life, and I owe her the world. And then there’s my 10 year-old brother. He’s honestly my jaan (my life). When I was younger I always wanted a brother, and when I turned 10 I finally got one. But soon after that, my parents split up. Growing up, my brother never had a dad in his life, he never got to experience some of the things I did growing up. I just want to give him everything. I want to be the one putting him through school, and just give him everything that my dad never did. All in all my aspiration for the future is becoming successful and buying a beautiful home for my mom and raising my brother into a man. There’s nothing more I can ask from God than that.

7 Daily Habits That Are Aging Your Skin What to Avoid Doing to Look Younger While researchers have yet to find the fountain of youth, there are things you can do now in your everyday life to stay youthful, injections, lifts and tucks aside. Ditch these seven bad habits to maintain your youthful, healthy looks longer. Smoking: There is not one thing that smoking is good for, especially when it comes to trying to stay youthful and beautiful. Every time you smoke one cigarette you’re breathing in toxins and carcinogens that are damaging your organs, including the largest organ in your body: your skin. Not only that, but the repetitive motions you make puckering your lips to smoke forms deep wrinkles around your lips and mouth. Need further evidence to kick your smoking habit for good? If you’re a woman, smoking will cut your life short by 10 years. Not Wearing SPF: In the fight against wrinkles, not only should you of course avoid tanning, but daily moisturizer with SPF is your number one ally. Sunscreen applied on a daily basis in the form of an SPF-containing moisturizer or as a separate product is the single best way to promote healthy skin and minimize wrinkling. You need to do this not just in the sunny summer months, but all year round. Harmful UV rays are still definitely present in the winter! While you’re protecting your face and neck, don’t forget your hands. You should apply a hand lotion with SPF every day (year round) to protect against wrinkles and age spots. Just think of how often your paws are exposed to the elements. You don’t want crypt keeper hands. Indulging Your Sweet Tooth: A diet rich in sugar is not only bad for your body, but can also affect your skin. Researchers have found that when you eat sugar, it attaches to proteins that actively work to damage other proteins like collagen and elastin. Once attacked, they become brittle and dry, losing the ability to keep your skin tight and full, which results in saggy, wrinkled skin. If the thought of diabetes isn’t enough to kick your midnight sugar cravings, perhaps this is. Not Wearing Sunglasses: They’re more than just a must-have fashion accessory. You should be wearing sunglasses every day to protect your eyes and eye area from UV damage caused by sun exposure. While

shading your eyes from the sunlight will prevent squinting and thereby help minimize the formation of wrinkles around your eyes, sunglasses are also necessary for the health of your eyesight. Repeated unprotected sun exposure can cause skin cancer around the eyes, cataracts (i.e., the darkening of the lens that you look through, causing cloudy, faded vision as you age), and even macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. And that’s just to name a few. Best bet is to go for a pair with UV protection and wear them all year. Chewing Gum: Not to burst your bubble, but you may want to ditch that chewing gum habit. Recently, physicians documented a trend in adults: regularly chewing gum causes wrinkles around the mouth. It makes sense. If your body is repeatedly performing a motion, it’s likely it will start to show wear and tear. In this case, the repetitive up and down of chewing is causing the skin to lose elasticity, and etch wrinkles into your skin. Sleeping Positions: Fetal, stomach, side or all sprawled out, everyone has their own comfy sleeping position. While your sleeping position may say something about you psychologically, make sure it’s not saying it on your face. Sleeping in certain positions can predispose your to sleep lines that can become permanently etched in your skin. Sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on your chin, cheeks and chest, and sleeping on your stomach can increase forehead wrinkles. Research shows sleeping on your back is the best position to minimize wrinkles. If you just can’t, try silk pillowcases, which she says may be helpful because the skin glides over them more easily, producing less wrinkle-causing friction. Stress: It’s not just making you miserable now, stress is also prematurely aging you. Stress ages you by weakening your immune system, makes you more susceptible to cardiovascular disease, and decreases your general wellbeing. The best thing you can do is to learn your stressors and how to manage them now. Do things to help prevent stress from getting to you, and free yourself to age gracefully.
