DARK SPACES- INSIDE CITY LIMITS Graduation Thesis 2014 Guide- Rupali Gupte Space in architectural term means to 'determine boundaries'. Societies have imagined specific boundaries and margins for making the city more systematic and rigid (Bernard Tcshumi). Spaces outside these margins or boundaries are seen as taboo or dark spaces. Society does not exist in a neutral or an uncharged vacuum, there are apparently both light(positive) and dark (negative) spaces. Society tries to employ architecture as a means to stabilize and to institutionalize usually through rigid city planning. The city of bombay was also planned as a rigid city by the colonials, with the dark(taboo) spaces planned away from the city center to the outskirts of Bombay at that point of time. In modernist planning the whole idea of hygiene keeps the spaces like cremetorium, slaughter house, red light area, STP,dumping ground etc away from the city town, since those spaces are scene as 'Dirt' in the social ideology. With the growth of the city limit these dark spaces are now engulfed into the city limits. But the perception of the society havent changed over time for such spaces even though these are now a part of the city. Functions carried out by specific spaces which are seen as 'Dirt' in a hygienic society are called as 'Dark Spaces'. The modernist ideology imagines all the dark spaces to be taboo and locates it away from the habitable spaces . Such dark spaces are also the image for fear or unknown functions it carries. The modernist planning ignored these dark spaces and pushed it away from the city limits or try to eradicate it by demolishing such spaces. Few examples of such modernist architects are le corbusier, Haussman etc. There are several ways of treating anomalies. Negatively, we can ignore, just not perceive them. Positively we can deliberately confront the anomaly and try to create a new pattern of reality in which it has a place. So Is it possible that instead of conserving society acting on city, the city planning help to shape the society? Is architects role To design the conditions rather than To condition the design. Can architecture help in the change of the ideology of the society and create a new pattern where these dark spaces fit in?

SITE SELECTION

DESIGN STRATERGY FOR MASTER PLAN The site is selected from marking the dark spaces in the map of mumbai of 1895, which was out of the city when established but are now almost the centre of city.

SITE ANALYSIS

The Master Plan approach for the site is to have small “SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS” all over the site to form a complete new pattern for such “TABOO SPACE”, and these interventions are to be connected by “MEANDERING PATHWAYS”. These meandering pathways form the idea of an “UNCANNY PARK” for the public with the taboo spaces inside the park and functional. The modernist approach of having a clean slate is ignored and the interventions are designed keeping in mind the function of dark spaces.

The site consists of “FOUR DARK SPACE” adjoining each other. The spaces are S.T.P, Crematorium, Slums, Garbage Disposal Office. The current architectural patterns seen are, to close spaces with huge walls on side and cover with trees thus making small and narrow passages to pass. The crematorium has both burial and cremation spaces for hindus. THESIS- DARK SPACES

Vanchanalay for oldage, workshop for women, Anganwadi, Health care centre School, Play area for kids

The site will consist three main textures “Existing Texture, Dark Spaces and INTERVENTIONS”. The Park has five main Block interventions with restoring the existing texture of site, the interventions are “Cultural Park, Sewage Treatment Park, Surgical Interventions in Slums, Street market and Memorial for saints”. The programs have evolved keeping in mind the existing use of the space by the public and how the programs start becoming the catalysts and help to change the perception and create a new pattern of the dark spaces.

MARKET ADJOINING S.T.P The market is placed ajoining the water body and is imagined to be the main attraction for the continous flow of the public on site. The market is designed in a way keeping in mind how the street vendor uses the walls, cutouts etc. The walls keep on modulating which takes different functions like display area for vendors, seating for public, viewpoints to the parallel street created. The market is divided n three main parts like food stalls, book stalls (green spaces designed next to it), clothes and accessories stalls. The market gives the slum peole a platform to sell their products made and learned in the workshops. The market and S.T.P is divided by the Moat with reed bed in it, The idea od an uncanny amphitheatre viewing the moat with reed bed and passing of the nalla water in it.

S.T.P MUSEUM AND VIEWING DECK The old dilapidated S.T.P blocks starts acting as the museum for S.T.P and the old chimney acts as viewing deck and the cultural space at a height. The deck gives public a top view of the S.T.P and park and also the city view. The pathway cuts through a part of the S.T.P which shows the input of the drains from the lower level and screening of the drains before passing to the areation tanks. The landscaping is existing wild landscaping filled with trees. The walls are cut in way where the visual connection is lost from inside but enough light and ventilation is there and also there is a partial visual connection from outside.

VACHANALAYA AND WORKSHOP This is one of the surgical interventions in the slums. The vachanalaya steps down from the ground and the workshops are over the slums. The ground is clear of any spaces. The ground starts acting as a cultural space and the stairs take the function of seating of the people and other community gathering spaces. The working of the workshop at the top is not hampered by the chaotic movement and texture of the slums.

STUDY OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING

ACADEMIC WORKS AFFORDABLE

Fourth year - Semester 2 Guide-Shantanu Pordie and Manisha Agharwal

Income Level

The Project started with the Question What Is affordable housing in india and around the world? and also understanding the users of such affordable housing. The project is a low cost housing scheme for a 45,000 sq.mts plot at the outskirts of Mumbai. The site has no context and the project deals with the idea that the architects usually feel most powerless when the plot given has no context. Since the plot has no context the housing worked with the idea of building for the community by under- standing the user group and also understanding what is Affordable housing. The Designing of Master plan emphasis on the common spill out spaces for the community, thus the community over a period of time starts using these spill out spaces in different manners according to their uses.

JUGAAD HOUSING

- Affordable housing as per my under-standing is Jugaad housing. Since the users usually get small spaces to stay, thus they opt the idea of jugaad-( making do with whatever in the hand). So i started using the idea of jugaad by the users to design the master plan and the individual level cluster plan. Common Spill out spaces are designed in the master plan with different functions around it so different types of ju- gaad can happen all over the master plan and also on the cluster level plan.

SOUTH GHATS OF WAI

Third Year- SEMESTER 2 Guide- Pinkish Shah The project is placed in a temple town of Wai. The project questions the relation of the old temple town architecture with the continous urban development. The town consists of ghats ajoining the river krishna and the old heritage temples filled with continous flow of devotees and tourists. The site is the south ghat of wai adjoining the river and is the result of the continous development. The site faces one of the major and old ghat called ghanpatiphule ghat. The design proposal is to connect the south side ghat with the old heritage ghat and temple. The site is connected with a pedestrian bridge on one side and a vehicular bridge on other side, thus usually acting as a path of journey of a person from point A to point B. The proposal consists of the dharamshala and community hall as main functions with exhibition space and library .The design is to enhance the journey of people from different points connecting the site, keeping in mind the height and making use of locally available materials. DIFFERENT PEDISTRIAN ROUTES USED BY THE LOCALS ON THE SITE TO REACH FROM POINT A TO B

The space planning is according to the journey of public from the pedistrian bridge to the roads on both level. The public functions and semi-public functions are placed at the lower level which is are connected by the vehicular and the pedistrian bridge on both side, and the priave functions(dharamshala and admin block) are placed on the higher level which is connected by the upper vehicular road and through a staircase from the lower part. The open terrace next to the private functions has direct access from the main vehicular road and is designed in a way where is becomes a viewing deck during the functions at the ganpatiphule ghat.

SATRA- ADHIKARI HOUSE, MAJULI

ACADEMIC WORKS

Second Year- SEMESTER 2 Guide- Shirish Joshi The act of drawing is also an act of recording something that might disapper. Majuli is an island in the middle of river brahmaputra, the landscape there is a perepetually transient one. The communities that live on the island include the tribal villages and vaishnavite monasteries called SATRA. The architecture of homes show essential relationship between the land and the settlement, ritual and light, sacred and profane. The design of the satra adhikaris house(head monk of Satra) represents these relationships and also shows the Hierarchy in the Satra. The Hierarchy is seen with the height of the house in the Satra where the Namghar(house of god) is the tallest and then satra adhikaris house and so on. There is a continous flow of public and the house needs to show the sense of authority at the same time keeping in mind the culture and relationship of house with Satra. The house has no exterior walls, thus opening the whole Ground for preaching and visitors to meet satra adhikari with courtyard at the centre.

The house is a combination of 2, two BHK Flats. The interiors is designed in a way that in future if the client wants to use it as a two different flats then would be possible. The interiors help in opening up the kitchen to the living room but still have a identification of a different space. There is a small study area designed at the back of the indian seating which is at a different level to give it a different space identification. The bedroom 3(north-east) is designed with a hydrolic bed so that for working it can be lifted and the bedroom gets enough space. The colour scheme is kept to be white with a makrana flooring and the vibrant colours added are with sofa upholstry and art pieces. For eg. There is a jharokha from jaisalmer which has a prominant yellow colour and also a mud painting from kutuch which gives good colour combination for the indian seating area. Client had few wooden posts from his ancestor house which were used in the interiors at different places like at the entry of pooja room and the support for th T.V unit.

The House no 57 is a plot of 2800sq.ft in Safala near Virar. It is a plot in a scheme of 100 plots. The plot shares the external boundary with the paddy fields and a visiual connection with the mountains. The other two sides of the plot are shared with other bunglows and one with a road end. The Bunglow is designed in a way that it feels like a journey of exploring spaces from Start (entering through the main plot entry) to End (reaching the lower most courtyard). Also the idea was that the spaces starts opening up ones the person starts exploring till he or she reaches the last point. The bunglow consists of 2 Bedrooms, one Living Room and Kitchen and a Private play area.

The Club House in Tukwada(Vapi) is a Recreational area for a bunglow scheme of 11 bunglows. The Plot is a small plot at the edge of the scheme. The design idea is to keep the building as open as possible so the set-backs can be used as a part of it. The main Facade gives a complete different view in comparison to the bunglows adjoining.

JNC- KIOSK Area- 50 sq.ft (8’ x 6’3”) Year-2013 Location- Maxus Mall, Mumbai Type- Commercial, Kiosk Status-Completed Role- Designing,Execution,Material Selection The space planning idea for this juice Kiosk(J.N.C) was to have a Display area for fruits but at the same time not allowing the buyer to have a look at the preparation area and also not over imposing on the surrounding. The cash Counter is designed keeping in mind the ergonomics. The kiosk needed to be self standing without any support from any of the walls or floor. Since the kiosk was Designed and constructed in 4 days the drawing technique used was of 3d Sketch-up, which helped in explaning the client the final views of the design.
