TABOO OR DIRT SPACES INSIDE THE CITY LIMIT Space in architectural term means to ‚determine boundaries›. Societies have imagined specific boundaries and margins for making the city more systematic and rigid. Spaces outside these margins or boundaries are seen as taboo or dark spaces. Society does not exist in a neutral or an uncharged vaccum, there are apparently both light(positive) and dark(negative) spaces. Society tries to employ architecture as a means to stabilize and to institutionalize usually through rigid city planning. It is evident that the planning of the city of Bombay by the colonials is also rigid city planning, with the dark(taboo) spaces planned away from the city centre towards the outskirts of the city. In modernist planning the whole idea of hygiene keeps the spaces like cremetorium, Slaughter house, Brothels, STP, Dumping ground etc away from the city centre and cities habitual spaces, since such spaces are seen as dirt in the whole hygienic society But with the growth of the city limit these dark spaces are now engulfed into the city limits. But the perception of the society havent changed over time for such spaces even though these spaces are now a part of the society

SLAUGHTER HOUSE (DEONAR)The salughter house at Deonar is one of the asias largest slaughter house and was placed well away from the resedential area but with the growing city its now a part of the city and also have become the connection to vashi(via road). The precinct is surrounded by the slums and there is huge open space acting as buffer zone. And the common approach of huge walls and trees are seen here again.

Usually are away from the residential area, But due to the growing city limit its becoming a part of the habitable space. But still ignored by huge walls and trees surrounding and angular walls obstructing the view

KAMATIPURA( RED LIGHT AREA)Situated in the main city town. The area was planned for the british colonial soldiers thus located near the base camps. The precinct has narrow lanes, bad hygiene, old dilapidated structures and C grade film theatres which acted as a threshold to the main society and the red light area. But with the current growth of the cit the red ligh area has reduced from 10 lanes to maximum of 3 lanes. And the builders are trying to buy the property for more residential building, thus completely trying to remove the brothels.Few brothels which were removed was shifted to navi mumbai but in parts and at different locations.

Four Main dumping grounds in mumbai are located at the edges of city. Of these four Deonar dumping ground is one of the largest. The deonar dumping ground is now over the period of time engulfed into the city limits(connection between mumbai and navi mumbai via road). The precint around the dumping ground is mainly the illegal slums which forms the threshold between the main city highway and dumping ground. The Gorai dumping ground is now closed with the growing residential buildings in that area.

Modernist Language of Reformation Functions carried out by specific spaces which are seen as ‹Dirt› in a hygienic society are called as ‹Dark Spaces› .The modernist ideology imagines all the dark spaces to be taboo and locates it away from the habitable spaces. Such dark spaces are also the image for fear or unknown functions it carries. The modernist planning ignored these dark spaces and pushed it away from the city limits or try to eradicate it by demolishing such spaces. Few examples of such modernist architects are le corbusier, haussman etc.

EXISTING

In modernist thinking as perceivers we select the stimulus from a context governed by a pattern making tendency. Our tendency is to try and fix every event in models and patterns that we have been thought or experienced . What happens when we face experiences that do not fit in any LEVELS pattern? Is it possible that instead of conserving society acting on city , the city planning help to shape the society?

SITE

The site consists of four dark spaces adjoining each other in the centre of the city. The four dark spaces are crematorium, S.T.P, Slums, Garbage disposal office. The master planning idea is to make an urban park but not in a modernist way of a clean slate but, with small surgical interventions on the sites which starts changing the perception of these dark spaces. The interventions change the current way of using these dark spaces, and giving these spaces a new definition. Few programs areMemorial,Pathway through the city of dead,Rehab and health care centre,School,Market, etc.

JUGAAD HOUSING The project is a low cost housing scheme for a 45,000 sq.mts plot at the outskirts of Mumbai. The site has no context and the project deals with the idea that the architects usually feel most powerless when the plot given has no context. The housing worked with the idea of building for the community by understanding the user group and also understanding what is Affordable housing. The idea of making do with what one have in hand is seen in such houses (commonly known as -JUGAAD). S o i started using the idea of jugaad by the users to design the master plan and the individual level cluster plan. Common Spill out spaces are designed in the master plan with different functions around it so different types of jugaad can happen all over the master plan and also on the cluster level plan.

For eg the paved path next to the market starts becoming the open bazzars and the housing units next to the school and hall starts usings the space differently

Development of a typical housing cluster. The plinth line is staggered to accomodate various activites like street vendor, parking etc. Shops are placed at the end of the clusters and the staircases are placed on three edges and on the fourth edge duplexes are placed.open to sky spaces are designed at different level for multi utility by the community P-8

REACTIVATING TEMPLE TOWN PRECINCT The Urban precinct of old kalyan town is made of multiple fragments of old heritage wadas, Pokharan talav and its network with the wells. Due to the sudden development the water connections between the kala talav and pokharan talav is cut thus making the pokharan talav an inactive space and currently acting like a huge garbage pit.The study of the precinct led to the proposal of an urban water renewal project and the upliftment of the pokharan talav precinct. At the master plan level the idea is to open up the relation of the talav with respect to the temples and the community around. The project deals with re-activating the pokhran talav precinct.

TOWN

MANIFESTO

The main purpose of the manifesto is to create awarness and make new bye-laws with help of government which helps in the up-liftment of the temple precinct and old kalyan town. Thus the method of a comic from a view of a protagonist is opted which helps in an easy awarness to the locals and the govenment officals. For a long time now, architecture has been one of the most defining factors of the existence of civilization.Architecture is the key to the prosperity of civilizations and in case of Kalyan architecture needs to be manifested to do the following: 1. Recharge the important network of wells and help the Wadas to be thus self-sufficient, leading to eventual development in its state and thus becoming sites of heritage significance. 2. Develop, the Pokhran Talao Precinct. Pokhran Talao(now dried) being in the middle of 4 temples, its development shall activate the otherwise nearly defunct temples and also bring about harmony amongst the various different communities staying there. 3. Create awareness and increase the popularity of the old town Kalyan and its heritage. This would in turn benefit the people staying in this area through other means such as trade and commerce and hence provide for the same. In order to bring about these changes, the following steps need to be taken, with immediate effect. 1. Rain Water Harvesting using conventional methods can ensure a steady improvement in the groundwater table. Hence, employing methods of Rainwater Harvesting and Rain water collection at small scales. 2. Pushing water into the Pokhran Talao from the Ulhas river using methods of Capillary action and groundwater restore to bring back water in this catchment. 3. Reduction in the number of Borewells puncturing the Ground Water system. 4. Installation of Purification systems at regular intervals to provide for the cleansing and filtration of water. Since there is availability of sand in the area, sand beds can be a good and economic way to filter water collected.

Part of the comic book which shows how a protagonist tries to bring change to the temple percinct with help of the locals and also the govenment officials

The old kalyan is the town with Heritage temples,Wada and Pokharan talav. Due to sudden increase in population and random development in the temple precinct made pokharan talav inactive and also the talav has become the backyard of the buildings surrounding it. So to re activate the talav view points are created from the road towards the talav by opening the area around the talav. Thus changing the talavs view as the the backyard to the buildings to the frontyard and also re activating it as a community space.

SOUTH GHATS OF WAI The project is placed in a temple town of Wai. The project questions the relation of the old temple town architecture with the continous urban development. The town consists of ghats ajoining the river krishna and the old heritage temples filled with continous flow of devotees and tourists. The site is the south ghat of wai adjoining the river and is the result of the continous development. The site faces one of the major and old ghat called ghanpatiphule ghat. The design proposal is to connect the south side ghat with the old heritage ghat and temple. The site is connected with a pedestrian bridge on one side and a vehicular bridge on other side, thus usually acting as a path of journey of a person from point A to point B. The proposal consists of the dharamshala and community hall as main functions with exhibition space and library .The design is to enhance the journey of people from different points connecting the site, keeping in mind the height and making use of locally available materials.

The space planning is according to the journey of public from the pedistrian bridge to the roads on both level. The public functions and semi-public functions are placed at the lower level which is are connected by the vehicular and the pedistrian bridge on both side, and the priave functions(dharamshala and admin block) are placed on the higher level which is connected by the upper vehicular road and through a staircase from the lower part. The open terrace next to the private functions has direct access from the main vehicular road and is designed in a way where is becomes a viewing deck during the functions at the ganpatiphule ghat. The amphiteatre is placed in a place where it faces the river and is also visible from the ghats opposite the site.

HOUSE OF SATRA ADHIKARI The act of drawing is also an act of recording something that might disapper.Majuli is an island in the middle of river brahmaputra, the landscape there is a perepetually transient one. The communities that live on the island include the tribal villages and vaishnavite monasteries called SATRA. The architecture of homes show essential relationship between the land and the settlement, ritual and light, sacred and profane. The design of the satra adhikaris house(head monk of Satra) represents these relationships and also shows the Hierarchy in the Satra. The Hierarchy is seen with the height of the house in the Satra where the Namghar(house of god) is the tallest and then satra adhikaris house and so on. There is a continous flow of public and the house needs to show the sense of authority at the same time keeping in mind the culture and relationship of house with Satra. The house has no exterior walls, thus opening the whole Ground for preaching and visitors to meet satra adhikari with courtyard at the centre.
