Weather Generally Pattaya is a wet and dry tropical climate. One may divide the climate into three: Cool, Dry and Wet or Rainy. Cool season, which is the Thai winter, runs from around November to March when the weather is pleasant with temperatures around 20 - 25 degrees Celsius and humidity fairly low. This is the tourist season and hotels are usually full.

Pattaya Beaches

There are 3 main beaches in Pattaya: Main Pattaya Beach, Jomtien Beach, and Wong Amatya beach at Half Moon Bay. There is also a smaller beach at northern end of Pattaya by

the Pratamnak Hill between Jomtien and the main beach area as well in the headlands between Main Beach Area and Amatya Beach. Pattaya Main Beach is the original beach where development started. It is busy with many restaurants and shops fronting it. Jomtien Beach to the south is a long 6 kilometer beach popular with locals and tends to be busy during weekends and holidays with day trippers. The southern end of Jomtien is a lot quieter and so are the other smaller beaches in between the main beach areas.

Pattaya Islands

There are a number of islands offshore Pattaya. The so-called “Near Islands” are Koh Larn (the main island); Koh Sak and Koh Krok, which lies 7 kilometers west of Koh Larn or Coral Island. The “Far Islands” are Koh Phai (the main island) Koh Wichai, Koh Ho Chang, and Koh Klung Badan and are further west of the “Near Islands”. Another island Koh Rin lies southwest off Koh Phai. Some of the islands are reached by speed boat or ferry, speed boats take 15 minutes and ferry 45 minutes. Many beautiful beaches can be found in the islands and all have crystal clear waters excellent for swimming and snorkling. Many tourist and residents flock to the islands taking ferries at Bali Hai pier to enjoy the island beaches and sea. Some islands offer water sporting activities. A few hotels are located in the main island.

History Pattaya was a small fishing village until the 1960s when American servicemen began arriving for R&R (Rest and Relaxation) during the Vietnam War. The weary soldiers discovered the beautiful golden beaches of Pattaya and created a demand for comfortable accommodations. Thus former weekend vacation cottages and fishermenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shacks were transformed to hotels and shops. The presence of G.I.s and other holiday makers also attracted many other entrepreneurs who set up restaurants, night clubs, and other services. As a result Pattaya grew into an international beach resort; now it attracts over 5 million visitors a year from different countries all around the world. The high number of international visitors of different ethnic backgrounds has also encouraged the establishment of an excellent selection of authentic foreign ethnic restaurants serving French, Italian, Swiss, German, Austrian, Hungarian, Scandinavian, English, Indian, Arabic, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine, to name a few. There is also a rapidly growing community of foreign retirees living in Pattaya attracted to its tropic easy life style, low cost of living, friendly people, and international class facilities. That living cost is lower than other countries is of special consideration for people on pensions. Thailand immigration has a special visa category for foreigners over 50 years of age who wish to retire in Thailand.

People

There were slightly over 100,000 registered residents in Pattaya in 2007. But this figure does not include the people who work in the city but are registered in their home towns and provinces. Including non registered residents who work or have retired, estimates place the figure at 500,000 Pattaya residents or even more. Today there are possibly over a million residents, thus the reason for traffic problems. Most registered residents are of Thai-Chinese ancestry while nonresident workers are mainly from Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Northeast (Isan) who work and live in Pattaya but remain registered in their home towns or province.

Getting Around Travel around Pattaya is easy and simple. There are 3 main roads that run North to South that parallel the beach and each other: Pattaya Beach Road, Second Road, Third Road plus the main highway Sukhumvit Road, which is not a Pattaya road but connects Bangkok going north and Sattahib going south. Pattaya Beach Road follows the main Pattaya Beach. It has a popular esplanade next to the beach which separates it from the road. Many tropical plants are planted along this promenade. People stroll or jog along this way which is approximately 3 kilometers long.

This is where the development of the resort started and where most of hotels, restaurants, shops, etc., are located. It runs one-way north to south. At its northern end the road starts at the Dolphin Circle where it joins Naklua Road, Pattaya North Road and the Second Road. The Pattaya Beach Road intersects the Central Road at its middle and South Road at its southernmost end where it becomes the Walking Street and then ending at the Bali Hai wharf area. The Bali Hai wharf is where boats going to the islands are docked.

The Second Road also starts at its northern end at the Dolphin Circle where it joins the Pattaya Beach Road, Naklua Road, and Pattaya North Road. It also intersects with Central Road and Pattaya South Road after which it meanders until Pratamnak or Buddha Hill. The road runs one-way from south to north. The Third Road starts at its northern end with its intersection with Pattaya North Road, then it intersects with Central Road and the Pattaya South Road at its southern end where it soon veers west to meet with Second Road and ending at Bali Hai area. Naklua Road begins at its southern end intersecting the Second Road and North Road at the Dolphin Circle running inland toward Naklua village and market in the north. North Road starts at the east at the Dolpin Circle where it joins Second Road, Pattaya Beach Road and Naklua Road and ends at its eastern end at the Sukhumvit Road. This is a dual carriage thoroughfare and carries the heaviest traffic. The bus terminal to Bangkok is located a few hundred meters from its eastern end near the Sukhumvit highway. The Pattaya Central Road divides Pattaya as a whole and intersects with the 3 roads that run north to south. The road divides central Pattaya area into North and South. It starts at its eastern end with its intersection with Sukhumvit Road and the Pattaya Beach Road at its western end. Pattaya South Road start with its intersection with Sukhumvit Road at is eastern end and runs west, meeting the Third Road, Second Road, and finally ending at Pattaya Beach Road and Walking Street intersection. This road is the oldest among north south running roads, once connecting the village (now Walking Street) with Sukhumvit. Here you will find Pattayaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main Buddhist temple, Wat Chai Mongkol, near the Second Road intersection. Jomtien Road is located at the southern section of Pattaya and follows the 6 kilometer beach besides it. An esplanade runs along its western side with many tropical trees planted long the way. A number of inexpensive but good Thai and seafood restaurants are located here. Jomtein is connected with central Pattaya area through Thappraya Road which goes through Pratamnak Hill. Many small roads or sois interlace Pattaya area connecting the main roads together. Most public transport however travel through main roads mostly.

The State Railway of Thailand has a daily service on its Eastern Line that passes Pattaya and travels to Hua Lumphong Station.

There are 3 highways from Pattaya to Bangkok: There is Sukhumvit Highway (Highway No. 3), which follows the coast line and the former main road to Pattaya from Bangkok. It has scenic views and passes through interesting towns but tends of be busy at most times with traffic.

Pattaya is about 1½ hours, or 120 km by road from Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Pattaya is also served (very limited) through U-Tapao International Airport, Sattahib, located 45 minutes drive from the city.

Bus The Bangna Trad highway (Highway No. 34), which includes an elevated portion with limited access starting from Chonburi City. Bangkok – Chonburi Motorway (Highway No. 7), which links with Bangkok’s Outer Ring Road. This is a limited access highway.

Buses run nearly every 30 minutes from Pattaya’s Bus terminal in North Pattaya Road to Bangkok, terminating at the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekamai), Northern Bus Terminal (Morchit), and also to Surnabhumi Airport (Bangkok’s International Airport). A special bus service which connects Pattaya with Suvarnabhumi Airport is located on Tappraya Road near the intersection of Thepprasit Road. It uses modern air-conditioned buses, and takes around 1½

Thailand Travel News Canadian wins Pattaya Triathlon 2015

Thais Suphakit Sukatiphum and Siraphop Sudsuparm finished second and third with times of 1:08:38 and 1:11:41 respectively. The Oct. 17 swimming-biking-running competition attracted more than 1,000 local and international athletes with competitors from the United Kingdom, Germany and United States. All won prize money by finishing in the top 10 in the marquee category. Winners in all the brackets were awarded medals and gifts, with everyone participating getting souvenir t-shirts.

Thai AirAsia to add 3 more U-Tapao (Pattaya) routes Soon after launching two new flights to China from U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya Airport, Thai AirAsia announced it would add three more routes to bring even more tourists to the Eastern Seaboard. The announcement backs AirAsia’s claim

Three race categories were available for male and female competitors: a Standard Triathlon (1.5 Km Swim – 43 Km Bike – 10.8 Km Run), a Sprint Distance (0.75 Km Swim – 22 Km Bike – 6.2 Km Run) and a Duathlon (6.2 Km Run – 43 Km Bike – 10.8 Km Run). that it plans to make U-Tapao its fifth full-fledge hub in Thailand, following Bangkok’s Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Krabi. The carrier inaugurated its first direct flights 3-4 times a week out of U-Tapao to Nanning and Nanchang in southern China on Sept. 25 and 26, respectively. They have received a good response on this route, with load factors of 70-75%. It also began regular flights from Kuala Lumpur to U-Tapao by its Malaysian parent AirAsia Bhd. in July.

“Thai AirAsia aims to expand roots in cities with fast growth and economies, especially U-Tapao airport, which is close to major cities like Rayong, Chonburi and Pattaya,” said Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld. “The reason we’re continuing to launch new routes from U-Tapao is we see its potential and the opportunity to draw travel and investment to the Eastern Seaboard, be it to the popular entertainment destination Pattaya or Rayong’s industrial center,” he said.

Tourism minister’s vision of green, connected Eastern Seaboard linking Thailand to Cambodia Captain, crew and dignitaries welcome passengers aboard the first AirAsia flight U-Tapao to Nanning and Nanchang in southern China. Itthiphol said having a Thai AirAsia base only 45 minutes from Pattaya will benefit the city due to the convenience of the airport’s location.

Tourism and Sport Minister Kopkarn Wattanavrangkul recently announced the government’s plan of turning the Eastern Seaboard into a “Green” ribbon linked to Thailand’s eastern neighbors to build a strong regional tourism industry. The Minister was welcomed by Deputy Gov. Chawalit Saeng-Uthai to the provincial headquarters for her speech to the Commission of Tourism Development. The speech covered the government’s operational plans for tourism development in the eastern region from 2016 to 2020. The vision of an environmentally friendly, internationally linked, Eastern Seaboard focuses on beaches and islands with colorful natural features and an international flavor. She also stressed the development of Rayong, Chantaburi, and Trat to support that of Pattaya with their own tourism attractions. Targets of this development according to Kopkarn are the “quality” tourists who stay for a longer period and have higher spending power. A key to this strategy is building links to Cambodia, Vietnam and other SouthEast Asian neighbors.

Wisansap said that while U-Tapao still is not a completely commercial airport, it still has untapped potential and capacity. “We aim to improve and build more terminals with the support of the navy to be able to reach our goals of 3 million passengers per year,’ he said. “The construction of the new terminals is estimated to be completed by February.” Pattaya officials welcomed executives from Thai AirAsia, which has made Pattaya the center of the low-cost airline’s latest expansion plan, serving an increasing number of routes from U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya Airport.

As part of the budget carrier’s “AirAsia Loves Pattaya” initiative, the Thai subsidiary of Malaysia’s AirAsia Bhd., has launched six domestic and international flights to Udon Thani, Macau, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and the southern Chinese cities of Nanying and Nanchang. TAA is also supporting the U-Tapao to become a full commercial flight center, boosting tourism in eastern Thailand. Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said Pattaya residents are pleased to discover that they have a convenient airport that is just a short distance from their doorsteps.

The fair was opened by former Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplone together with Sagna Kijsamrel and Pattaya officials. Some amulets are priced in hundreds of thousands of Baht. The Petchprakan Praram 2 Club won top honors winning a trophy and the golden Taksin Maharaj (Petch Buch Edition) coin of winning the top prize. The most popular amulet trophy as well as Luang Poh Khoon (Petch Bucha Edition) silver coin was won by Khunyok Suankwangthueng Club. The fair was sponsored by Pattaya Police stations throughout Pattaya area the event was more than an exhibition of Buddhist amulets but was also a competition of the oldest and rarest and most popular amulets. The event was held to promote tourism and conservation of old and rare Buddha amulets.

Thailand Travel News Gay Pride Festival opens with pride parade

Pattya’s Gay Festival was celebrated with great abandon by over 200 members of Pattaya’s gay community who paraded down Beach Road for the start of the city’s Gay Pride Festival last October. The parade exhibited many shows and conveyed a festive atmosphere along the procession’s route. The Oct. 14 procession was led by Pichaya Areerob, an executive with the Pattaya Dragon Project and organized by operators of 10 gay bars, Pichaya said the festival was held to celebrate the increase in gay tourists to Pattaya, a rise obvious in the attendance at the city’s many gay bars. She said that Bangkok bombings lat August have put a dent in visits this fall, so the parade was organized to gain publicity

and draw LGBT tourists to return. The festival also aimed to promote the upcoming World AIDS Day and generate interest in Pattaya’s Dec. 1 commemoration, she said.

Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show Beautiful and expensive yachts were showcased last November at the annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show at Ocean Marina Yacht Club Pattaya. Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show 2015 was held on the weekend of November 26-29 with free admission as usual at the yacht club. All the luxury brand names assembled there, including the newest design yachts. Supercars, superbikes, as well as luxury real estate condominiums were on display also. The exhibition sponsored maritime activities including sailing, paddleboard, kayak, Jet Skis and fishing. The highlight of this year’s show was the official launch of the Ocean Emerald, a luxury superyacht and is one of just four identical superyachts in the world. This spectacular contemporary masterpiece is said to resemble a floating five-star hotel.

Kan Air launches new route between Pattaya and Chiang Mai

Kan Air, the Chiang Mai-based domestic airline, announced that it will introduce a new thrice-weekly domestic flight between its base and U-Tapao International Airport in Pattaya, starting from 26 October, 2015. The airline will operate on the route on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, using the 66-seat ATR 72-500 aircraft. To mark the new route opening, the airline is offering a special fare starting from 990 Baht for a one-way air ticket and free 15-kg baggage load, and complimentary hot meals and drinks on board.

Thai government to build third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok The redevelopment of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok was confirmed with plans to build a third runway to proceed. The multibillion baht aviation project will also see three provincial airports added across the country. Air chief marshal Prajin Juntong

told reporters: “The second-phase expansion of Suvarnabhumi airport will have to be done quickly to meet increasing numbers of tourists.” A committee will now be set up look into project details before presenting them to cabinet for approval, he added.

Airports of Thailand, the country’s largest airport operator, said it planned to expand capacity at the main airport. The airport operator said previously the expansion over the next five years would increase capacity at Bangkok’s overcrowded airport to 80 million a year by 2017.

Koh Larn remains popular with Chinese Despite bombing last August where a number of Chinese nationals were injured and killed and recent reports of rape and accidental death of Chinese tourists in Pattaya, the Chinese continue to flock to Pattaya, particularly Koh Larn island. The island is very popular with Chinese tourists, arriving daily by ferry and speedboat, who have supplanted the Russians that used to pack the island. Koh Larn (Coral Island) enjoys the reputation of clean, white beaches and clear waters, making it attractive for people who like to snorkel or sun bathe in the beach. Restaurants in the area are doing well despite the slowdown in the mainland. Koh Larn beaches have full facilities including restrooms and showers as well as many restaurants serving fresh seafood. TAT launches new Amazing Thailand Logo The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has rolled out a number of strategic activities to promote the Thailand as a top tourist destination at one of the most important travel trade events in Europe, the World Travel Market (WTM) which was held last November, 2015. Traditionally, TAT uses the show as an important platform to launch the country’s tourism marketing campaign for the incoming year. TAT first attended the WTM in 1980, making this the 35th year of participation. This year TAT is launching the new Amazing Thailand logo, which incorporates the attraction and appeal of the most famous characteristic of Thailand – The Smile. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor said, “One of Thailand’s most important events for this year WTM will be the launch of the new “Amazing Thailand”

logo, which features the famous Thai Smile. Thailand is also known as the Land of Smiles, and the new logo builds on that in order to strengthen the bonds of friendship, fun and happiness.” Ornate details of the traditional Thai Kanok pattern have been adjusted to create the ‘Smile’ symbol. The letter ‘A’ in the word ‘Thailand’ has been re-designed to look like a pair of smiling eyes, which, when accompanied with the ‘Smile’ symbol, perfectly form a person’s smiling face. The colour schemes have also been specifically chosen to underpin the image of softness.
