Phase One: Analysis of the urban space

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.AREA OF STUDY DEFENITION OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

We settled to outline the area as the following. We found that the relationship between both Rainbow and Kherfan Streets is dominant due to the typology, geology and socio-economical relationships of the people, land and use. The area of study includes several schools, parks, land-usage, shop typologies, building typologies as well as some heritage. The area has been extended, as shown in the pink outlined area to understand how the variety and dominance of the immigrant ethnicities plays a role in shaping the area.

The site is in the area of Jabal Amman, Jabal Amman neighborhood is one of the seven hills that originally made-up Amman, Jordan. Today, Jabal Amman is near the downtown area. Along with the rest of old Amman, Jabal Amman was first settled during the Neolithic period. But unlike nearby hills, particularly Jabal alQal'a, Jabal Amman was never fortified. It remained somewhat of a wooded outback until the 20th century, when Amman was declared the capital of TransJordan and royalty, wealthy families, businesses, army officers, and politicians began moving into Jabal Amman. Soon, the jabal was informally established as an elite neighborhood of Amman. As Amman spread west, the 1st Circle was built and Jabal Amman became a primary east-west artery for the quickly expanding city. As the area aged, trees and greenery matured. Today, full grown trees line the streets of Jabal Amman. In 2005, the Greater Amman Municipality recognized Jabal Amman as a 'heritage attraction point' and set forth plans to preserve and develop the historic hill.

Landmark

The map illustrates the landmarks that help in creating a mental representation of the site as a whole. It can be seen that the site has a good number of schools as the Islamic Scientific School (starting from far left next to the Second circle) going to Rosary School, Bishops School and Ahliyyah School for girls. The site has two parks that vary in size, Hawooz Park which is the bigger park that is located near an intersection of a street coming from the first circle.

The map illustrates the land use of the site, it can be clearly seen that site has a lot of residential type (C) lands on Omar Bin Khattab Street and a residential type (D) on the lower part of Khirfan Street .Commercial lands increase as we get close to the second circle. Other type of land is usually a mix of both residential and commercial. We wanted to illustrate the circles given from GAM as potential open area.

Project Area

The map Illustrated uses Nolli’s technique which means that the streets and squares are voids and the buildings are solid black to show the external public spaces and their connection. This technique helped us to understand public spaces’ distribution and connection In Omar bin Khattab Street and the impacted areas of the street as a whole.

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.SITE ANALYSIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

The map illustrates the existing vegetation in the site. As seen, there is a lack of vegetation covering the connection to the street. Through our analysis a diverse set of plants was portrayed. The vegetation has a social, aesthetic and ecological value in the site. However, vegetation isn’t being taken care of which affects the physical appearance of it all along the street. As for the lighting infrastructure The map illustrates the poor infrastructure of the site; starting with the waste management offering seven garbage bins along Omar Bin Khattab street. As for the light poles, it can be seen that the density of light poles increases in the lower level of Khirfan street. Omar Bin Khattab street is fairly lightened with some gaps in some spots as the NY park, the NY park is not luminous enough in the night for the parents and kids to feel safe while using it.

Street Network One Way Street Two Way Street

The map portrays the street network of the site, as it can be seen one way street is dominant in the site that is illustrated in the pink color with some intersection of two-way street that can be seen in red color. Omar Bin Khattab Street itself is accessible fairly from several directions that can be seen by the street network purple lines, whether from Rainbow Street or the first circle or even the second circle.

Service Lines

The map illustrates the public transportation of the site; as service lines coming from downtown and Ras El Ain to access the rainbow street and the nearby circles (Second circle going through Omar bin Khattab street ) and (First circle going from Rainbow street). No bus line passes through this street however, the school busses use the street excessively resulting in the creation of bulbs and traffic at peak hours for schools.

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.SITE ANALYSIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN CREATIVE INDUSTRIES AND AIRBNBS PLAN PLAN 1.2.3

Airbnb Creative Industries

In this plan we show the locations of Airbnb, most of which have a cheap or reasonable cost by day. Those units house foreigners therefore bringing people to the site. We also show the emerging creative industries strips in Jabal Amman. One of these strips is in our site and include 4 shops. The other strip is not very far and have shops that have grabbed the people’s attention. Those newish kinds of shops are slowly but surly inducing other shops to make themselves more interesting to people. The nature of creative industries is to find the cheapest possible space to use and once a shop opens another follows until we have a cluster of creative industries. We see a possibility for the cluster to continue to grow in our street and we want to encourage that.

Com. Full Com. Vacant

In this plan we show the perceived land use of the ground floor. It is mostly commercial, which have a surprisingly high percentage of vacant warehouses. After commercial educational is the most prevalent in the site due to the large number of big schools. The least prevalent land use is residential. Some of the ground floor residentials are abandoned.

Resd. Vacant

In this plan we show the perceived use of the first and upper floors. On the complete flipside of the ground floor land use map. Residential is in the lead with some buildings completely vacant and others have units for sale/rent. There are some commercial units on the upper floors, mostly vacant. The educational buildings generally had more than one floor. PERCEPTUAL GROUND.FRIST FLOOR USAGE PLAN 1.2.1//PLAN 1.2.2

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.SITE ANALYSIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN PERCEPTUAL SIDEWALKS ACTIVATION PLAN 1.2.5

In this plan we show that we have active and nonactive sidewalks. The active sidewalks have people setting and talking or selling on them. The inactive sidewalks have on the not-street side a wall of a school or a restaurant, which make the sidewalk very uninteresting and a transitional space only.

Not Active Sidewalks Active Sidewalks

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.SITE ANALYSIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN Due to the location of the site , the main typology that dominates most of the area is the L-Section typology where the ground floor is a commercial floor where the floors above are residential floors that elevate above the street and has created a vertical visual connection between the users of this level and the street . The floors below the street would have their facade facing the street below .This typology is repeated all along the street and is very popular in Amman and Syria.

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.SITE ANALYSIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

In this map , the paths of the users have been indicated in lines as perceived through the documentation process , the density and thickness of lines have created nodes of active zones such as where the main necessities shops and restaurants exist . the diverse users have crossed paths in this active zone was it either from the foreign tourists using the Airbnb's nearby or by the residents of the street or by people just passing by . making it a destination rather than just a transitional zone such as the street passing alongside the back of Al-Mutran school.

PERCEPTUAL PEOPLE PATHS PLAN 1.2.7

PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.SITE ANALYSIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

Emphasizing on the diversity of users and their paths in the site , this map shows different routes created by different users in their daily life routine , such as the Egyptian woman that walks with her child to the school and goes to work , then picks her up on her way back and stopping to buy their daily need of goods from the supermarket . also, the shop owner that his drops him off at the second circle and walks to his shop where this routine has taken place for 30 years.

School Users Transportation

Due to the amount of school and educational buildings that surround the site , the school user's transportation was an important element of the site analysis that could be observed specially through the rush hours and played a role adding new stakeholders to the site such as the parents driving their kids from and to the school using their cars or by foot , school busses , and the pedestrian school children flow. PHASE ONE: ANALYSIS OF THE URBAN SPACE.CASE STUDY OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

A celebration of the act of making; both traditional and contemporary, combining design installations, exhibitions, shops, and cultural programs that offer craftspeople and makers from across the country a chance to share their ideas and stories. The Arabic word Hirfa, is derived from the root h-r-f and means occupation, trade, handicraft. It is also shown to relate to labor as a source of livelihood sustained through practice, habit, and repetition with connotations of processes of change and alteration. We move away from the notion of craft and tradition as authentic, singular and frozen to the notion of craft as alive and evolving, ever-changing forms of labor producing objects and transforming oneself. Through a journey of discovery of crafts and materials of the Levant, we aim to a different understanding of craftsmanship, hereby tradition is a sum of resources and materials gathered to craft possible futures. Uncover value: ADW used Craft district to uncover value and demonstrate how an underutilized space could be transformed to contribute to safety, community building and economic goals. Tucked away in a hidden corner of Jabal Amman, the Kabariti Village is a private property owned by the Kabariti Family. It is a compound of old residential buildings, heritage homes, and gardens located off Omar Bin Al Khattab Street and built in the 1930s. Sparsely visited by the public since its renovation in 2011, and unoccupied since 2008, the Kabariti Village was opened to the public during Amman Design Week 2019, where it hosted the Crafts District exhibitions and showcases, thanks to a generous donation by the Kabariti family, especially to H.E. Malek Kabariti and Hania Kabariti. Intervention hopes to bring crafts back to the street level and on-street engagement with audiences in a significant neighborhood in Amman. Running alongside Jacaranda Images gallery the Crafts District looks at materials and the process of making in the public realm and as part of a narrative about production and consumption in the contemporary world. Attract Attention: Coordinating a transformation with a planned event or organizing new programming can help to activate the space temporarily and attract media attention.

PHASE TWO: CRITICAL REFLECTION.SITE SYNTHISIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

We see here that the people are using the street for three main purposes. The first is commerce: people, both residents and tourists, come from our street and the lower street via the stairs to buy their needs from the diverse shops in the street. The second use is educational: kids walk from their homes in the surrounding area to their schools. Other kids come via buses or their parents’ cars to the private schools. The third use is transitional street: People drive from rainbow street to go back to the second circle. Other people drive through the street going from another street to a third one. Since there is no bakery in the street people go to the second circle to buy bread.

GROUND FLOOR LAND USE X MOVEMENT PLAN 2.1.1

PHASE TWO: CRITICAL REFLECTION. SITE SYNTHISIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

To merely increase the understanding of the analysis , this layered map shows the land use and the different ethnicities and the movement all along the site , these diverse ethnicities along with the different age groups and users have created this movement flow where it shows the different intersections and nodes where all these different backgrounds have used the different availabilities similarly in times and differently in other times , the African group have used the vacant parking lot to play football where they have made a box where they all invest with minimum amounts to maintain this field where they had a sense of belonging to that place and felt the need to share it together and even pay to keep it maintained , other availabilities where also used in different approaches such as opening a restaurant , creating art , having group activities , and coloring different staircases which was done by one of the NGOs concerned about this area . Seeing all these vacancies in shops and lands indicates the value and the potential as one of the schools is relocating , leaving a great amount of free land which could be utilized properly. The vacant shops that require a low amount of rent are available all along the site where 4 creative industries have taken the chance of this low rent to start up their business, whereas due to the typology , shops on the ground floor offer a mezzanine floor that allows it to also have a work area as some of the owners of these shops have mentioned it in the interviews.

ETHNICITIES X LAND USE X MOVEMENT PLAN 2.1.3

PHASE TWO: CRITICAL REFLECTION. SITE SYNTHISIS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN

By layering the vehicular routes and the different paths of people, we understand more not only the blobs of where these movements intersect, but also what creates them. There are various factors that impact the movement of the site, a strong one being the schools in the area, that show in a specific time during the weekday, an obvious increase of vehicle movement, where school buses create traffic that affects the whole street. There is a variety in the movement of people in the street, and the difference would be based on the needs of people, for example, the route of a man working in the area would be different than a women living in it. So, the density and blobs shown in this map depend on the people and their daily needs. Another lesson learned from this map, is that existing functions also play a big role in creating vehicular and pedestrian blobs, for example, having shops like a supermarket, butchery, barber, grocery store, in one area, creates this blob of people that use these shops on a daily basis.

PHASE THREE: DESIGN OF URBAN SPACES.INITIAL MASTERPLANS OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB STREET.JABAL AMMAN.AMMAN.JORDAN As a conclusion, both masterplans shown up are the sum of all the analysis and synthesis for the area of Omar Bin AlKhattab. The initial outcome turned out with two masterplans, one explains the interventions that will be worked on and the second one on the right shows the urban procedures and ways to apply the interventions. As a starter, a couple of methods were choice that we thought would help achieve what is on paper. Such methods needs to be fast, low cost and reversible, meaning that the change will happen rapidly and effectively, not to forget the sustainable aspect. So, after understanding the site and managing to connect with what are our opportunities and threats, and through our first approach Tactical Urbanism, the idea of plazas emerged and the decision to close a street that was kind of unused was taken to create what was later called AlKhattab Plaza, that will host different elements to cater for everyone. The tactical approach is to start with bollards, which will create the sense of a plaza, until it’s achieved at last. Our second approach was inducing the existing creative industry section and create a more vibrant, identified area that will host creative events and will be the house to creative tourism by adaptively reusing some buildings from the 50s and transforming them into residencies that will host local and foreign users. Through Urban Acupuncturing the vision for the parkings in Amman would change when puncturing the roofed gardens and working on the urban heat islands in the city. The idea is to elevate the land through very cheap material and create a community garden, that would later on produce a product that would be sold. Last but not least, through all of the mentioned methods comes the largest action area, which is working on a Farmer’s Market that would achieve the temporal aspect in relation to the site and all of the other action areas. The infrastructure of the schools that are leaving the area has been an opportunity to recreate a lot of temporal and permanent events that would cater for the whole neighborhood.
