EMPOWERING TEENS THROUGH Adventure

WITH US THIS SUMMER
SAIL CARIBBEAN
We’re proud of our over 40-year history and we’re excited you want to learn more about us! Sail Caribbean has been an amazing part of my life over all these years, and I feel most fortunate to have shared in this adventure.
What has made Sail Caribbean successful throughout this journey continues today—young adults accepting challenges and responsibilities, and outstanding staff sharing their knowledge and skills all while having the time of their lives. Our core values remain strong: respect for one another, respect for the environment, and a belief that together people can achieve great things.
We teach essential life skills as our students navigate through their teenage years. Leadership. Teamwork. Problem-solving. Decision-making. Responding to the unexpected. A tall order? Absolutely! But with a spirited group of teens anxious to spread their wings, and a dedicated staff eager to share their knowledge, I’m proud to say that we do it, and we do it year after year.
If you are looking for a challenge and a true adventure, we invite you to call us to learn more. For first-hand information, we’re happy to provide a roster of all our recent Sail Caribbean families from your area who have completed one of our adventures. Over the years, more than 16,000 students have placed a vote of confidence in our programs, our leadership, and our safety record.
Thank you for considering Sail Caribbean. We can’t wait for you to join us!

WHY PARENTS TRUST US
Time-Tested Experience
Sail Caribbean is the oldest teen sailing program in the Caribbean. For over 40 years, under the leadership of Founder Mike Liese and passionate veteran staff, our vision, reliability, and commitment to excellence has never been compromised. Our reputation in the islands and in the teen adventure travel industry is outstanding.
Safe as We Can Be
With a student-to-staff ratio of 4:1, we maintain the utmost vigilance in keeping teens safe and healthy. All staff members are required to be certified in CPR and Wilderness First Aid, both courses in which they have demonstrated competency in making good decisions that create positive outcomes in unexpected situations.
The Highest Standards
Our program demands the highest conduct standards of both staff and teens. We never turn a blind eye to actions that spoil the experience for others or put anyone at risk. We have strict no drug/alcohol and cell phone policies. If broken, students are automatically sent home.
Our Name Says it All
We're Caribbean experts because this is our one and only home. We know the islands—the geography, the sailing conditions, and the people—better than anyone. That translates into the safest and most enriching experience possible.
WHY TEENS LOVE US
You're in Charge
Sail Caribbean students take command of their boats from day one. Our "live it, learn it" approach means you're involved in every aspect of our adventures. Under the watchful eye of our experienced staff, our learning environment fosters confidence, leadership, and teamwork.
Go at Your Own Pace
Our voyages emphasize personal goal-setting. Interested in attaining scuba certification? Honing your sailing skills? Preserving the rainforest? Pursuing marine biology studies? Everyone’s ambitions are supported! And if you already have experience in a given area, we will build on it.
Endless Adventure
Every day brings new challenges and activities. Try your hand at wakeboarding, paddleboarding or scuba diving. Sail to gorgeous anchorages, teach local kids to snorkel, sail small boats, kayak and waterski. Sail Caribbean offers the challenge of a lifetime and the time of your life!
Lifelong Friendships
Friendships start upon arrival and continue long after your Sail Caribbean adventure ends. You live, learn, and grow together with your crewmates. Many of our students agree: saying goodbye to their new friends is the hardest part of the trip. For those who return, there’s the added excitement of reuniting with old friends!

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS AND PASSPORTS/VISA
Everyone entering or leaving the U.S. through airports and seaports going to the Caribbean must have a passport that is valid through the entire period of travel. If you are not a U.S. citizen, please check to see if you are required to have a visa.
Prior to booking your flights, please make sure you are aware of our guidelines for arrival and departure times that must coordinate with ferry schedules. ERDMAN
YOUR YACHT IS YOUR HOME
Your boat is more than a vessel. It’s your home. Learning, sailing and growing with your crewmates is at the heart of everything we do.
Learn It, Do It
You’ll get to know your crewmates and get comfortable in your new home in no time. Think of your boat as a “live-aboard classroom” that stimulates learning and responsibility in a cooperative environment. By the end of your adventure, you’ll not only know how to sail, and maybe scuba dive or conduct marine research, you’ll have the life skills to work on any team in any setting!
We’ve Got Your
Back
Each day, you’ll rotate through positions of responsibility that are critical to your team’s success. Together you’ll plan and manage all aspects of the day’s activities. A duty roster involves everyone’s contribution to tasks, both large and small. Our staff will be at your side acting as a guide when needed, but you’ll be leading the way! Whether taking the helm, cooking a group meal, or anchoring your boat, you'll become the ship’s leader.
Life On The Water
hauling in sails, or just getting to know one another, life onboard happens with a certain magic. When you’re sailing together, a team spirit grows out of necessity and evolves into camaraderie. Sail Caribbean alumni say teamwork challenged and rewarded them the most.
"What comes to mind when I think about my experience with Sail Caribbean is overall happiness. It was honestly one of the happiest times in my life. The memories I made and my now second family are something that I can never repay Sail Caribbean for."
AVERY B., AGE 17, SEATTLE, WA
There are no boring moments at sea. You’ll fall into the rhythm that makes life onboard like no other. Wake up to the call of seagulls and fall asleep under a starstudded Caribbean sky! Whether you’re reading charts,
Get Set For Challenges!
Our staffers are mentors trained to facilitate group discussions and create opportunities to apply your newfound skills. Over the course of your adventure, you’ll be presented with a series of challenges where creative problem-solving by team members is the only way to achieve a common goal. Whether researching marine species on a snorkel or racing yachts up a channel, you’ll step out of your comfort zone—and love every minute of it!
Strangers Once, Friends Forever
Living in close quarters and spending time together makes new friendships happen quickly. As one of the crew, you’re part of a dynamic group, a team of individuals with different backgrounds and interests sharing the responsibility and fun of working and being together in your ‘home on the water.’ Two things we hear most often from former students: after their Sail Caribbean adventure, their confidence skyrocketed and their friendships became ever-lasting.
SAIL CARIBBEAN'S
The perfect setting for working, playing, and learning as a team. Chart your course, take turns at the helm, and sail to new destinations each day.
You’ll live on a co-ed boat with others in your age group, sailing 2 to 3 hours each day to a new island, harbor, cay or cove. While at sea, you’re always in sight of land in the BVI. Every day you’ll leave the boat for water sports, beach activities, or island exploration.
Space is limited, much like camping, but you’ll learn quickly how to make it work and respect one another's privacy. Conserving water and electricity, and monitoring food supplies is part of the daily routine. Traditional showers are taken a few times during the program at marinas. In between you’ll lather up and jump into the sea and finish with a fresh-water rinse. Being in the Caribbean, you'll always have the option of sleeping out under the stars with the sound of the water and a light breeze lulling you to sleep.
CATAMARAN
Both types of yachts have:
4-5 cabins (bedrooms) shared by 2 to 4, although most prefer sleeping on deck
3-4 Heads (bathrooms)
Main salon (living & dining room)
Galley (kitchen)
Cockpit (outside seating area)
A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO SAFETY
Preparing and maintaining a safe and healthy environment is our highest priority.
Highly Trained Staff
During our comprehensive pre-season on-site staff training program, we review safety equipment and procedures specific to our environment, and conduct simulated emergency drills in multiple locations. Every Sail Caribbean staff member is certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Additionally, on our fleet, medical officers and trained Emergency Medical Technicians or Wilderness First Responders accompany each program. Medical officers lead the efforts toward a safe environment by keeping a close eye on every aspect of the program.
Health and Safety
Each day staffers meet to discuss the progress of each boat, address any concerns, and emphasize strict attention to the well-being of students. Health, hygiene and safety is discussed every single day with all staff. In the event emergency medical attention is required, our high-speed motorboats ensure quick transfer to land where we have long-term relationships with qualified local doctors. We also have close ties with Virgin Island Search and Rescue (VISAR), the local 24-hour emergency response team in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Weather Precautions
We monitor weather daily and have ample time to prepare for approaching systems. Although hurricanes are rare during summers in our area, we are always ready. Should the need arise, we have a detailed hurricane plan that includes swift relocation to a secure land-based shelter.
Students Think Safety, Too!
Students are taught the "Safety First" mindset. Sailing a 50-foot yacht is an awe-inspiring experience that is fully enjoyed only with a sense of confidence in one's safety and well-being. From day one, rules are thoroughly
explained, safety techniques and emergency procedures are taught, and the "buddy system" is firmly established. Lifejackets are worn for all watersports and while on boats under sail.
Scuba Safeguards
Scuba diving is a special activity where safety procedures and well-trained staff are essential. Our Sail Caribbean Divers scuba team is exceptional. We are the only summer program with our own year-round dive operation. Our professional dive staff's sole focus is on scuba diving—it's their only job! They have extensive experience working with teens, encouraging them to dive at their own pace, a most important factor for dive safety and enjoyment. Our custom-built dive boats provide platforms and ladders for getting in and out of the water safely. All equipment is well maintained, checked, and upgraded on a regular basis.
LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK
Sail Caribbean’s own True Course curriculum builds leadership and teamwork skills, fosters self-reliance, and instills the confidence to face any challenge with a ‘can do’ attitude.
Skills and Activities
True Course promotes important life skills such as listening, goal-setting, giving feedback and problemsolving. Our staff members are experienced mentors who present tasks and activities each day that test and develop individual and group skills in a safe and encouraging learning environment. Daily boat meetings are a chance to analyze, reflect, and plan for the next day's tasks.
Leadership Roles
On all voyages, a duty roster involves everyone's contribution to tasks, both large and small. Each day, you'll rotate through various positions of responsibility critical to your team's success. Crew members become skippers, mates, and navigators. You'll learn how to be an effective communicator, make sound decisions and become a valuable member of your team.
“We felt the SC staff was very professional and responsive. The program itself and the activities were creative and educational and also challenging—all leading toward personal growth and character development. We feel very blessed that our son could have such a life changing experience!"
AMY G., PARENT OF 12 YR OLD SON, JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL
Group Development
Students arrive as individuals and leave as a team of confident young adults—but not without some challenges along the way!
The True Course curriculum provides specific activities to facilitate each step of the group development process. As you become comfortable with your surroundings, we challenge you to take more “ownership” of the boat with less input from the staff. By the time you return home, you’ll be amazed how the skills you developed in your mastery of sailing set you on a course for future success.
Challenge Series
Over the course of your adventure, you'll be presented with a series of challenges where creative problem-solving by your team is the only way to achieve a common goal. We won't ruin the surprise with specifics, but be ready! You'll apply your leadership, communication, and other team skills to the challenge, and come away with a huge boost in confidence and a real sense of accomplishment.

WIND IN YOUR SAILS
THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A PASSENGER ON A SAIL CARIBBEAN BOAT. YOU'RE A SAILOR FROM THE MOMENT YOU STEP FROM DOCK TO YACHT. YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN—YOU RUN THE BOAT, PARTICIPATING IN ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF LIFE ON BOARD. AND WHEN YOU REACH OPEN WATER FOR THE FIRST TIME, YOU'LL KNOW THIS IS ABOUT TO BE THE BEST SUMMER EVER.
HARNESS A FORCE OF NATURE
With Sail Caribbean, sailing is a breeze. Most students come with little or no sailing experience. The only requirement is a love of the water!
No Experience Necessary
We start from scratch. You’ll learn in true hands-on style with our staff by your side. Soon, you’ll be speaking the lingo and working the yacht like a seasoned sailor.
Small & Large Groups
We travel in fleets of 2 to 6 boats depending on the program. Fleet living is the best of both worlds. You
Beginner Sailors
Sailing may seem challenging at first, but you’ll quickly learn the basics. On board staff members provide instruction while keeping everyone safe. Within days, you’ll have a handle on fundamental principles and theory. Sailing a yacht also teaches you teamwork, planning, and responsibility. The rewards are a sense of achievement, an appreciation of nature, and thrills you’ll hardly find anywhere else.

develop close friendships with your own crew while getting to know a diverse community of teens on other boats who come from all over the U.S. and abroad.
There’s safety in numbers when sailing as a fleet. And it also enables our staffers to share their knowledge with each crew. Staff members have fascinating backgrounds. They’re schoolteachers, dive instructors, ski patrol veterans and marine science researchers who’ve traveled the world. You’ll be sure to catch their enthusiasm for adventure!
Race to the Finish
Experienced Sailors
You’ll have a chance to play a leadership role as the rest of your crew gets comfortable learning the ropes. Even with prior experience you’ll face new challenges and learn new skills daily. All students will spend time on the helm, steering the boat from island to island and leading maneuvers like tacking, jibing, mooring ball pickups and docking.
You’ll race the fleet between islands, gaining practical experience in right-of-way rules and racing strategies. Itineraries include independent days when the fleet breaks into smaller groups with their own schedules, activities, and anchorages. Our program size allows for just the right amount of flexibility.

Community Service
A BETTER ENVIRONMENT
WE VISIT SOME OF NATURE’S MOST SPECTACULAR PLACES IN THE WORLD, AND THAT’S ALL THE MORE REASON TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT PROTECTING THEM! ACTING AS ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS IN THE BVI GIVES US THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO LOCAL EFFORTS IN PRESERVING THESE PRECIOUS SURROUNDINGS.
GET INVOLVED, GIVE BACK
We are committed to giving back to the islands that offer so much to us. Earn up to 20 hours of community service credit.
Learn about Island Life through Community Outreach
We connect you with local youth, empowering you to learn from and gain an appreciation for each other while working on environmentally sustainable projects. Each year we find out what projects would be most helpful to the community, enabling us to lend a hand in new ways.
Ongoing projects include working on an organic farm, beach/snorkel and dive cleanups, and teaching watersports and sailing to local students. We get to learn from those who know the islands best while getting a chance to pitch in, problemsolve together, and contribute to the future of the islands.
Coral Reef Protection & Conservation
Under the guidance of international organizations CoralWatch and Project REEF, we work to scientifically monitor, restore and maintain the health of coral reefs. We also team up with Project AWARE to Dive Against Debris, an initiative created by divers for divers to help prevent harm to marine life. With Sail Caribbean, you become a leader in ocean protection, taking a giant stride forward in helping to rescue the ocean and its inhabitants.
Tagging Sea Turtles
The BVI is an ideal habitat for populations of Green and Hawksbill sea turtles. The global marine science community works to understand the life cycles of these awe-inspiring but threatened creatures.
“ I loved beach cleans. After a beach clean, I would feel so amazing because I felt I was helping to save the planet."
ALEX B., AGE 15, CHAPPAQUA, NY
Following the natural disasters of fall 2017, Sail Caribbean is deeply motivated by local hurricane rebuilding efforts and how our team can respond constructively and compassionately to the community. Storm clean up, debris removal and community outreach is a vital part of this mission.
The BVI Conservation and Fisheries Department and the Association of Reef Keepers, a local nonprofit, train our marine science staff to facilitate sea turtle tagging and measurement collection with our FOXTROT and SIERRA students. Turtles that we tag in the BVI are recaptured both locally and throughout the wider Caribbean. Our tagging and recapturing data builds global understanding of sea turtle populations and their life cycles.

SNORKELING
You don’t need a scuba tank to see stingrays, pufferfish, whooshing shoals of silversides, and even to swim alongside a sea turtle.
ISLAND EXPLORATION
Hike through a rainforest or to the top of a volcano. Visit historic forts and national parks. Follow a trail winding around, through, and over massive boulders at The Baths.
SOCIAL EVENTS
When we go ashore you’ll meet the crews and staff from other boats. It could be at a BBQ, a night when we hit a local restaurant, or when dancing to a local DJ. Fleets face off for honor and glory at the SC Olympics, a tradition and highlight of each trip.
"I went tubing so often with my friends! The thrill of going so quickly on the tube is so much fun! Although it’s scary at first, afterwards it’s so fun to just laugh about how afraid you were and how it feels like nothing now!"

Explore the BVI by the wings of the wind, by bubbles underwater and by footprints upon sand. ALPHA adventures offer all the activities featured in our other programs, in just 2 weeks! ALPHA is ideally suited for those with limited time and who are eager to make the most of every moment. No prior sailing or diving experience required!
Each day, join a lesson in sailing, marine biology, scuba, or team-building. Throughout the adventure you’ll practice what you learn and gain real hands-on experience while commuting among locations onboard a 45-foot catamaran.
Sails range between 2 and 4 hours, taking us to some of the best spots in the BVI: volcanic islands, spectacular reefs, popular marinas, and deserted cays. Each location offers ideal conditions for sailing small boats, kayaking with new friends, carving waves on a wakeboard, or going on a moonlit snorkel! ALPHA offers several optional courses, too.
ALPHA is fast-paced and high-spirited. Every session is a passport to new skills, personal growth and lifelong memories. It is the perfect introduction to the Sail Caribbean experience!

TIME TO EXPERIENCE IT ALL
You’ll pack a lifetime of experiences in 21 days while living aboard a 50-foot sailboat. BRAVO offers the widest array of activities and devotes the most time to watersports. No experience is needed, but we guarantee you’ll return home after 3 weeks a seasoned mariner. Sail 3 to 4 hours a day to the most famous locations in the British Virgin Islands, as well as to quiet hideaways where you’ll see a side of the islands only the locals know. Together with your crewmates, you’ll learn by doing. Before you know it, you’ll be sailing with confidence.
A typical day? Hug the coast in a kayak. Take a thrill ride on a tube. Grab a tow on a fast-moving wakeboard. Sail Hobie Cats at the Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC) on Virgin Gorda and explore the enormous boulders at The Baths, one of the most extraordinary natural wonders anywhere. You’ll also give back to the islands, and grow in the process, by restoring a beach to its natural beauty. There’s plenty to do on BRAVO programs, but if you’re looking for more, our optional diving and ASA sailing certification courses let you shape the program to fit your goals.

EXPERIENCE BLUEWATER CRUISING
“Bluewater” cruising is what sailors call longer voyages. The first 7 days of DELTA are in the British Virgin Islands where you’ll hone your sailing skills and prepare for an overnight sail to the Leewards. Living on a yacht and navigating long distances will give you and your crew a taste of freedom and sense of triumph. Harnesses are worn during night sails to ensure safety at sea. Our sailing curriculum and optional ASA certification courses offer just the right challenges for beginners and experienced sailors alike.
For 10 days we’ll explore the Leeward Islands: majestic Saba offers the heights of Mt. Scenery and the depths of an unforgettable marine park; beautiful St. Kitts hosts Brimstone Hill Fortress, and companion island Nevis boasts sandy palmfringed beaches. These are amazing islands and the local people love sharing their culture.
If you’ve never tried scuba, our introductory Discover Scuba course is the place to start. Or earn your PADI Open Water certification right away. If you’re already Open Water certified, enjoy recreational diving at some of the best dive sites anywhere. Plus there’s kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding and tubing—guaranteed to raise the bar on excitement. We promote ecosystem conservation through our community service programs and in our marine biology seminars to help you appreciate all you see. You’ll head back to the BVI on another overnight passage under a warm blanket of stars as a seasoned sailor and veteran explorer.

MITs have an excellent opportunity to return the following summer to take on additional responsibilities. Sail Caribbean takes great pride in having MITs with us well beyond their first year.
SAIL CARIBBEAN OFFERS MATE-IN-TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS, EVEN THOSE WITH MINIMAL SAILING EXPERIENCE.
Our Mate-in-Training (MIT) course is for college-age adventurers who are interested in working in the field of outdoor and experiential education, especially with our teen summer sailing and diving camp. You will have the opportunity to work with students aged 11-18 in a unique nautical environment.
Your summer starts with our Echo College Sailing & Leadership course to study and practice advanced seamanship and earn American Sailing Association 101, 103, and 104 certifications. Next, you will complete our 10-day staff training with the rest of our staff members. Together we focus on the ins and outs of creating and delivering adventure programs.

The goal is to have everyone engaged and excited about sailing and life on board.
Students rotate through various positions such as Captain, Navigator, Mate, etc., as you facilitate teamwork and support of one another. You will also be collaborating with your fellow staff to assure programs run smoothly and safely. Daily responsibilities will include assisting with meal preparation, teaching basic sailing lessons, leading a snorkel, or assisting with program logistical efforts like provisioning, boat fueling or escorting students to and from the airport.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQ
With over 40 years of experience, we know the questions you want answered! Here are just a few to help you plan for your new adventure with Sail Caribbean.
HOW MUCH SAILING OR DIVING EXPERIENCE DO I NEED TO HAVE?
None! Many students come with little or no experience at all, but you do need to know how to swim and enjoy being in and around the water. Our captains, mates and professional dive instructors will teach you everything you need to know about sailing and scuba diving safely at your own pace.
HOW'S THE FOOD?
Fresh, healthy and delicious! We plan and provision while our students prepare and cook wonderful meals under the guidance of our staff and Sail Caribbean Cookbook. Our students enjoy taking on the challenge of mastering the galley to provide nutritious meals to fuel their team straight through action-packed days. If you’re a vegetarian, kosher or have other special dietary requirements, we can accommodate most needs. We have had students with peanut, gluten, lactose and other specific food allergies join us successfully.
DO YOU ACCOMMODATE CUSTOM TRIPS?
We offer customized expeditions for independent groups of all sizes - call our office for more details.
WHAT DO SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS LOOK LIKE?
Although there is room for every student that joins us to sleep in a cabin below deck, space can be limited living on a sailboat. Many students choose to take advantage of their surroundings by sleeping out on deck at night. We encourage those who may want to experience this to bring a camping hammock in order to enjoy the beautiful Caribbean nights out under the stars as they are rocked to sleep by the gentle swaying of the boat.
WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?
We think summer is the best time of year in the Caribbean, with temperatures in the mid-80s, a constant breeze, and comfortable evenings. Rainy days are unlikely. Water temperature is around 84 degrees, making it a comfortable place to swim, snorkel, scuba and waterski, without ever getting cold! We carefully monitor weather systems daily. Hurricanes rarely approach the islands we sail and dive in. In fact, hurricanes have forced us to alter our itinerary only twice in our 41-year history. Even so, we have a comprehensive emergency plan for each program location. In the event of a hurricane warning, our fleets head to pre-arranged safe harbors and everyone is moved onshore to designated shelters. Once the threat has passed, we re-board our boats and complete the program.
WHAT WILL COMMUNICATION BE LIKE?
A core objective of every adventure is to foster independence in teens. To that end, we collect students’ cellphones upon arrival to minimize distractions and maintain focus. Students have the chance to call home within a few hours of arrival, then weekly. Once collected, covert or unsanctioned use of smartphones or similar Wi-Fi enabled devices will be treated as a breach of our handbook. Parents, relatives and friends can share in the Sail Caribbean experience through trip updates and photos posted on our website blog. As frequent as possible, we post from each adventure, although appreciate an understanding of our limitations due to the nature of our programs.
