THE EDIBLE CITY A modern community cultivation center

Location: Bangalore, India Final year thesis project - executed individually under the guidance of Ar. Shanthala V, and Ar. Pooja Surya Kumar between January 2019 to April 2019 Project research and report

AN INTRODUCTION This project mainly addresses food insecurity; it questions the sourcing of food in large cities, in this case Bangalore, and how awareness can be bought onto the much healthier, less invasive options of food cultivation and consumption that are available. It is an attempt to observe the possible symbiotic relationship between co-working spaces and farming indoors. Here, we employ the various soil-less methods of cultivation namely aeroponics, aquaponics, and hydroponics to grow fresh organic produce in-house 24/7. What is beneficial about these methods is that it is artificially controlled in a closed environment helping us get rid of direct seasonal dependencies and weather impacts on the crop grown; moreover, the water usage goes down almost 90% whereas the amount of waste produced goes down 70% and the use of inorganic pesticides and fertilizers is nullified.

The Edible city

The crop grown on-site is the main revenue-generating resource. Monetizing this resource is extremely essential to be able to practically maintain a facility like this. For this, we should make sure our product is made available to a larger community and user group as well as increase the footfall into the facility by introducing programs that would be able to function simultaneously. For this particular scenario, taking into consideration some major aspects of the chosen site, the most suitable and viable option was to introduce co-working and coliving spaces. The aim behind putting together this facility is to bring people closer to our culture of “grow what you eat.” It is one of the most sustainable practices that can be employed in our daily routines to help us reduce our carbon footprints. All the while, working and living alongside our cultivated farms. This is a modern take on a simpler and more sustainable lifestyle for our near future.

CONTEXT ANALYSIS LOCATION DATA

2) Well maintained approach road 7m wide; 300m stretch from the main road to the closest edge of the site

1) A certain depression of a dried-out water body separates the KEB Sulikunte high tension line from the approach road. This depression is 1.7m below the raised level of the approach road.

3) The site is presenting dumped with construction debris and infertile soil

BUILT FORM ANALYSIS

3

• Urban sprawl alongside the northern region of Sarjapur road with increasing density of residential plots developed as individual residential units instead of apartment complexes • Fast transformation of spaces and development noticed between a span of 14 years is having a major impact on the existing agricultural land

6) The approach road is 7m wide and is identified by signage for the BR Ambedkar welfare housing scheme, which is abutting the site.

4) The secondary path of approach is a kaccha road with no defined boundaries roughly 8m wide

PROXIMITY FROM VARIOUS HOPCOMS OUTLETS HOPCOMS in Bangalore is a formal setup for the retail of fruits and vegetables to consumer directly from farmers. Accounting for 13% of produce in the city, HOPCOMS outlets are seen to be located only around the city center. Inference: There is scarcity of transparency in distribution of food crop in the city. Thus, supporting the design program.

5) The approach road is lined by coconut trees on one side and dry vegetation on the other. The slight turn blocks direct visibility from the site to the main road.

USER GROUP

As one drives towards the site precinct, they will come across towering residential structures built to accommodate the large numbers of the migrant population moving into these Peri-urban regions of the city

The Edible city

Large upcoming tech parks line the edge of the road, acting as a magnet to the migrant population and hence changing the demographic of the area. Here, we can see a prominent shift of land use from agricultural land to a highly commercial urban setup, following the ongoing trend in the city of Bangalore.

Approach towards site notice the underdeveloped or, quaint architectural fabric denoting that the sprawl has not yet reached extents of the precincts yet.

MECHANISM OF STRUCTURAL SUPPORT The building stands on the support of the two main building cores. They are shear walls which contain within themselves space for vertical circulation, vents, public washroom areas, as well as service related aspects such as electrical, HVAC and plumbing lines. The structure holds onto the floor plates by a system of 1.25m deep lattice girders which join the core with an I-section at their junction. This system allows for having open column-less floor plans and also, provides a threshold for suspending the false ceiling elements to conceal the air ventilation and circulation systems wherever necessary. The shear walls go into the ground to a depth of 7.5m to safely carry all the load of the floating floor-plates into land. The core is the common element that ties the staggering floors to each other, creating a functional space, as well as an aesthetic structure which lets in maximum daylight.

LEVEL 7 Intensive farming This level uses aquaponic farming methods. It is to be kept away from areas of large footfall as the area needs to be left pest free. The mechanism is gimmicky and requires more maintenance. Four main fish tanks will be employed and each floor plate will have one teaching area.

LEVEL 5, 6 Co-living spaces This space is to accommodate the resident staff, and service personnel. The people coming in for a training program may also be housed here. Basic facilities such as private sleeping areas, common rooms and kitchen area, washroom and wardrobe areas. Here, dwelling units of the users of the co-working space are also accommodated.

Electrical lines servicing each floor Plumbing servicing common toilet within cores

LEVEL 4 Farming + Learning spaces Carefully planned aisles and corridors provided at regular intervals of rows of racks. A centralized storage and packaging space is equipped with conveyor belts

LEVEL 3 Farming + Learning spaces

Lattice girders bolted onto I sections running through the height of the shear walls to support the overhead slab.

Planning of spaces maintaining flexibility and functionality (interlocking of functions)

FORM DEVELOPMENT A basic functional module of a building with a centralized circulation core servicing the entirety of the structure. The core may house essential aspects of the building such as the basic plumbing and electrical along with the lift systems and Considering 2 such modules staircases.

The Edible city

Creating a structure which is serviced with two cores - each core servicing equal surface area. As buildings get bigger, they require a larger number of such cores

Bringing character and a profile to the building helps bring attention to the structure, all the while creating small pockets of unprogrammed spaces which only compliment its various functions. This also helps the structure catch maximum light throughout the day.

Resulting structure has various independent activities happening on each floor owing to it’s open plan concept. The service cores are shear walls which house the lifts, staircase, and common toilets. Shear walls are effective ways to reinforce a building while maintaining lightness in the structure. In the case of the design, these cores offer the primary structural support to the building.

LEVEL 2 Co-working space x2 blocks Large balconies Large landscaped garden space over retail terrace which may serve as a public gathering or exhibition area. Perfect space for proposed community activities such as cooking competitions, open air performances, flea markets, etc. where the homegrown produce may be explored.

LEVEL 1 Co-working space x2 blocks Food court Retail, Library and unprogrammed space in front

TABLE DESIGN

The client asked for a multipurpose high table to be placed in the middle of the staff room for students to use as per their requirements to discuss group projects and to browse the Internet. He expressed a liking for integrated planters for the table. The following are the proposed three options in successive order.

High table with storage and planter detail Location: Springdays school - Vellore, India

As options were discussed, the need for storage was communicated and then incorporated in the design, after which on surface switchboard provisions were also added.

Executed for client under the guidance of Design Boulevard, Bangalore over the academic year of 2019

Option 1

Option 2

Planter box housing the ms fabrication to hold the plants holds pebbles within and is lined with a waterproof metal base sheet to prevent the ply boxing from weathering with frequent contact with water

Easy to fabricate and install Footrest integrated with base stand for comfort during use for longer durations.

Tray with chamfered edges for ease of storing and removing items

Table Design

Maintaining the same table top design with the planter detail, the modular stand at the bottom was replaced with a heavy storage unit owing to the functional requirements of the table. 4-shutter sliding doors to a basic internal shelving unit provided so that there is no hindrance to the high stools to be used with the table as would be with hinged shutters.

The final table design agreed upon was modified to optimize the available storage with drawers and hinged shutters as per clients’ liking. The MS framework designed to hold planters was removed and its simple casing was maintained. Additionally, two basic seaters which may be placed on either side of the table were designed.

The seaters provided flexibility in the seating arrangements of the room it was placed in.

Switchboards fitted into the tabletop with easy to use flaps keep away wire clutter and frees up space.

SEHGAL’S RESIDENCE - Massing and exterior skin design A 6900 sq ft house design for a family residing in Delhi Location: Sehgal’s residence, Delhi - India Executed for client as a freelance project from November 2020 to present

The house’s exterior facade was designed towards the client’s liking, and after working with them for 6 weeks, we have come to a common liking of one design proposal. They wanted a modern, rich approach to their residence with very classy looking finishes. We agreed on using a combination of brass powder coated grills with a balance of concrete micro-topped surfaces, rustic dark wood fins, and terrazzo clad exterior walls.
