Sail Maldives Yacht Rally
Partnership Proposal
Partnership Proposal Programme & Event Details
Introduction Sail Maldives Rally is the first event of its kind in the Maldives, and will be the largest yacht rally to take place in the Indian Ocean. The rally will begin on January 20, 2017. Our aim is to introduce yacht rallies to the Maldives, to promote the Maldives as a superb yachting destination and to make Sail Maldives Rally a permanent fixture on the international yachting calendar. We are accomplishing this by widely promoting the event to an international audience via the global media, yacht clubs and a targeted social media campaign. In doing so, it will facilitate the growth of sector of high-end tourism with a great many opportunities for expansion but has until recently been side-lined in the Maldives. It will boost the economy of the Maldives in a number of ways. Yachts will pay fees to moor at resorts, and crews will inject money directly into the local economy when they purchase supplies such as food and other essentials on inhabited islands. As such, there is also the potential to greatly develop the yachting supply industry in the Maldives (equipment, tools, clothing, navigation equipment, hardware, engineers, general chandlery, etc). All international yachting hubs, such as Antibes and Auckland, support a large number of local businesses. There may also be opportunities for marinas to be developed at various islands around the Maldives. A state-of-the-art marina has already been planned in the Hulhumale Phase III development project. Marinas incorporate dedicated moorings for vessels with yacht chandlers, restaurants, grocery stores, laundries, internet cafes and other services for yachts. Marinas are managed privately and vessels pay fees to moor there by day or night. Therefore, there are many opportunities for generating revenue from marinas.
Programme details There will be a three-day pre-registration period for vessels and crew at Uligamu, Haa Alif Atoll. During this time, participation fees will be paid and papers for immigration and customs will be processed by the relevant authorities. It is essential that the Maldives Immigration, Customs, Police and Coastguard work in close partnership with Sail Maldives to facilitate the smooth flow of the event and to ensure all international crew are processed. We are grateful for their cooperation, as it would not be possibleto organise Sail Maldives without a multi-agency partnership. The rally will begin at Uligamu on January 20, 2017. Vessels will progress to various inhabited islands, as per the map all participants will be issued with. Each island the vessels stop at is organising a festival for the participants. Other special activities for Sail Maldives participants will include a snorkelling expedition to Hanifaru Bay, visiting fish processing factories, cultural activities, activities in Male' Atoll and scuba diving and snorkeling at world-class diving spots. Participants will also receive a special certificate after crossing the Zero Degree Channel. The rally is expected to take 60-70 days. It will conclude in Addu City, Addu Atoll, with the launch of the Ocean Festival
Participants Yachtsmen and yachtswomen from around the world are invited to join the Sail Maldives rally. We anticipate yachts to come from Thailand, Malaysia and the Middle East as well as from further afield such as South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Seychells, Mauritius, Reunion Islands, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, and France. The participants are already aware of the Maldives as a luxury island destination and some may have visited before. However, this event will allow them to experience the Maldives in a completely different way. It will also show them a side of the Maldives which the majority of travellers do not see – the Maldives’s fascinating culture, and life on inhabited islands.
Promoting Sail Maldives A professional media team has been recruited in order to strategize the Sail Maldives marketing campaign. This will raise awareness of the event globally, and the ongoing digital marketing campaign will sustain interest and create a buzz around the event. This will include press releases in the yachting media and mainstream media as well as social media promotion via dedicated channels on Facebook, Instagram etc. We are also collaborating with yacht clubs and societies, as well as prominent and influential individuals on the yachting scene.

The Event Concept
The Event Concept Sail Maldives is igniting interest in the Maldives as a yachting destination and propelling the concept of yachting in the Maldives into the spotlight on the global stage. The awareness campaign is twofold: To encourage the growth of the yachting tourism sector by raising awareness internationally, and to help raise awareness within the Maldives of the opportunities to generate additional tourism revenue in a sector ripe for development. Sail Maldives will kick-start these initiatives. This is a major event which is attracting a lot of international attention. The focus is on enticing yachtsmen and yachtswomen from around the globe to discover the Maldives as a yachting destination. Through Sail Maldives, they will explore the country from one end to the other and discover why the Maldives is a fantastic destination for yachting. Furthermore, the Sail Maldives participants will share this knowledge and information with other yachtsmen and yachtswomen when they return to their home countries, so the reputation of the Maldives as a yachting destination will also be spread by word of mouth within a close-knit community of influential high net worth individuals. The Sail Maldives concept includes a focus on the cultural highlights of the Maldives, such as bodu beru performances and Maldivian cuisine. Each island will be competing to outshine each other with their festivals. The natural attractions of the Maldives such as the best scuba diving and snorkelling sites will also be showcased. The scope of Sail Maldives calls for businesses and individuals across the country to participate. This is quite possibly the largest mass-participation tourism event the Maldives has ever seen. The event will bolster the Maldives’ reputation as a luxury destination. While the lower-end of the tourism sector fluctuates, the global elite continues to support the yachting industry. It will directly boost the economy of the Maldives, including sectors which do not usually benefit directly from tourism, such as the small business sector (yacht supplies, groceries, engineering etc). Sail Maldives will continue to be an annual event, and each year will further build on enhancing the Maldives’ reputation as a yachting destination. Each year will bring new opportunities for sponsorship, for entrepreneurship and for boosting the tourism coffers. It will also increase demand for yachting-related developments such as new marinas and yachting industry services such as yacht chandlers, engineers, food supplies and hospitality.

Vision and Mission
Vision and Mission The aim of Sail Maldives is to encourage yachtsmen and yachtswomen from around the world to compete in a sailing rally in the Maldives – the largest event of its kind in the Indian Ocean and to simultaneously promote the Maldives to a global audience as a superlative yachting destination. Sail Maldives will help to develop a currently side-lined sector of luxury tourism, ultimately bringing in even more revenue to the Maldives. It will also help to support existing goods and services suppliers (grocery stores, laundries, marine equipment, engineers etc) and encourage the development of new small and medium-size businesses to cater to the needs of yacht crew, yachting supplies and yachting services. This will also create investment opportunities for building new yachting facilities, such as marinas. In addition, it will encourage community participation across the Maldives, due to the fact that each island the yachts will stop at is hosting a festival for rally participants. This makes it probably the largest mass-participation event in the history of the Maldives. Tourists who aren’t participating in the rally may also be drawn to the Maldives to watch the event. The yachts are likely to come from destinations within the region, such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as from traditional yachting nations further afield such as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa. the UK, France, Turkey and Croatia. We are attracting yachtsmen and yachtswomen via a targeted media campaign which includes press releases being distributed in sailing magazines and on yachting websites, as well as via yacht clubs and the mainstream media. Journalists from print and broadcast media are also being invited to cover Sail Maldives, and there is an imaginative social media campaign (Facebook, Instagram etc) to help reach an even wider audience. The success of Sail Maldives can be measured in a number of ways: The total number of participants registering for Sail Maldives – calculated using data from the Sail Maldives website’s registration page, as well as data from Maldives Immigration and Customs, which will include information on which countries the vessels are registered in. Google Analytics from the Sail Maldives website will also help to indicate the level of interest and break down the number of visitors to the website as well as which countries they are based in, plus how long they stay on each page, etc. Facebook analytics from the Sail Maldives Facebook page will also show similar information. In addition, our social media campaign will help Sail Maldives to achieve ‘likes’ on the Facebook page as well as for posts on the page, and we can also quantify ‘likes’ on Instagram, and the number of retweets on Twitter.
Quantifying the success of Sail Maldives
Quantifying the success of Sail Maldives Registration data for the total number of Sail Maldives participants will be available by January 20, 2017, when the rally begins. Website and social media analytics can be downloaded each week following the launch of the media campaign, although a complete picture will not be available until after the rally is completed in February/March 2017. Sail Maldives can ask island chiefs for feedback on how Sail Maldives contributed to their islands, perhaps via a survey and with an opportunity for suggestions for improvement for the next edition of the rally. Businesses on these islands may also wish to submit reports on the increase in profits they experienced. The main objective of encouraging international participation in the rally is integral to the success of Sail Maldives. We want to encourage people from around the world to participate in the rally. Secondary to this is encouraging tourists to come to the Maldives to watch the rally. Thirdly, community participation in the Maldives is essential, and in return, the local economy will receive a boost, plus new opportunities for development in marinas and yachting supplies will arise. Sail Maldives will benefit the communities across the entire Maldives and give enterprises new opportunities to benefit from the yachting sector.
