that someone to embody generosity
E
ight centuries before Mother Teresa, St. Francis of Assisi encouraged his followers to provide care for the poor. Once, when he came across a leper, Francis jumped down from his horse and kissed the leper’s hand. Having that sense of compassion for all people is a critical part in becoming that someone you were meant to be. Here, volunteering to help others just seems to be the natural thing to do. It’s a good thing, too, because in these times of increasing poverty, reduced budgets and cuts in government funding, a spirit of generosity is especially important. We strongly encourage student service because we see it as an indispensable trait in a truly educated person.
Be generous abroad Students have spent time away investing in American Sign Language with deaf children, volunteering in schools and clinics for the impoverished in Latin America, and working on translation projects abroad.
4
Witness a culture of generosity Within student life at Saint Francis, there is a culture of compassion and gratitude. Students find community within a host of clubs and serve others through faith-based and outreach organizations.
Learn to share We believe that learning is for sharing. Students at Saint Francis are encouraged to aim their talents and knowledge toward the service of others. It’s common for Saint Francis students to tutor each other and to invest in helping others understand a path they’ve already walked. There is a spirit of charity and encouragement that engulfs the academic pursuits at Saint Francis.
Teaming up for Thomas Thomas is an energetic 8-year-old boy who is mostly blind and deaf. Eager to help Thomas better connect with the world around him, SFU Education and Chemistry majors teamed up to create 3D-printed symbols that represent familiar activities and commonly used words.

“ I am young in my career but not in my ambition. My advice is to follow your passion and dream big!” —Leah Kessler Bringing aid to India Leah Kessler spent her time at Saint Francis obsessed with business and missions work. As an International Business major, she was involved in applying business scenarios to other cultures and even spent her downtime on spring break mission trips and in clubs with a ministry focus. Upon graduation, Leah merged her love for business and for missions work into one perfect career with Bausch + Lomb. She’s able to apply her marketing expertise in her job stateside and was chosen to represent Bausch + Lomb for dermatological missions in India. During her nine days abroad, Leah worked in a clinic that helped over 1,800 patients, most of whom were schoolchildren that had never before seen a doctor. “The entire trip was an amazing adventure. I was able to experience the culture, history and, most importantly, the people,” said Leah. “I am young in my career but not in my ambition. My advice is to follow your passion and dream big!”
6
that someone to express respect
B
eing a respectful person requires an open mind. The western world’s self-seeking mentality stands in opposition to the respect St. Francis modeled, but with deeper education comes deeper concern. Our students spend their days supporting each other and embracing a diversity of cultures and religions. They’re mindful of tomorrow and promote peace while they protect and preserve the earth itself. Throughout campus, there is a desire to build each other up to full potential and make a lasting impact on our culture in a caring way.
Embrace multiple viewpoints Exposure to different people, cultures and religions provides a new paradigm for respect and understanding. As our students study Culture and the Global Community as well the the History of Great Britain and the European Union, they come to respect various perspectives while mindful of our responsibility to future generations.
Witness a culture of respect Saint Francis students act like brothers and sisters, even beyond Greek Life. They frequently unite for common causes on campus and show respect both to one another and the community of Loretto. Exposure to both liberal and conservative mentalities provides us with the vision to better understand one another and the world around us.
7
Impact future generations Academics at Saint Francis are grounded in the pursuit of developing well-rounded and passionate students. They support each other and benefit from professors who consistently provide personalized attention. This common respect for each other, ourselves and the things we learn drives our passion at Saint Francis.
We respect each student At Saint Francis University, each student is important and worthy of guidance as they grow and prepare for a fulfilling life and career. Adrenaline Abby Abby Coccagna does a lot of things in her job as an Army Flight Nurse that would get your adrenaline pumping, like riding in helicopters over battlefields in Afghanistan. It is hard to believe that she was an accident-prone child who frequented the emergency department. The nurses were so kind and caring that they inspired her future career; however, it was the Nursing faculty at Saint Francis who gave her the confidence she needs to save lives in a war zone.
“ Study abroad has been, quite literally, my ticket to the world.” —Beth Wheeler From fear to freedom Beth Wheeler is quiet by nature and a lover of books. She came to SFU with no intention of studying abroad. In fact, she was terrified of the idea. But people Beth admired challenged her to face her fears, and she traveled with Saint Francis to both France and Italy. Upon graduation, Beth moved to France to teach English and be a part of the culture she had grown to love and respect. In her words, “Study abroad has been, quite literally, my ticket to the world. I am very grateful for the confidence I have gained as a result of my study abroad experiences. Those who choose to study abroad will undoubtably be pushed out of their comfort zone, which creates enormous potential for growth. It gives them a deeper understanding of themselves, the world and their place in it.”

The FareStart Café Seattle’s “most socially responsible crouton” comes from our very own Bill Adamucci ’66. He’s spent his life plagued by statistics of American waste, poverty and hunger, and in 1992, he opened the FareStart Café. This Washington restaurant generates revenue to fund employability and training programs for the homeless. Over 7,000 people have benefitted from job placement through this program and have retained an 88% success rate of employment. This amazing blend of entrepreneurship and philanthropy exemplifies St. Francis’ inspiration: “Start by doing what is necessary. Then do what is possible. Suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
Embrace the outdoors The region surrounding Saint Francis is a giant playground. Almost everywhere you turn, you’ll find nature, adventure, sport and history. Just beyond campus is the highest skiable mountain in Pennsylvania, the former personal golf course of Charles M. Schwab, a sparkling 1,600-acre lake, some of the best whitewater rafting in the East and dozens of miles of hiking and biking trails. There’s even a garden with waterfalls, immaculate gardens and Our Lady of Fatima Shrine to calm your spirit as you appreciate the nature around you.
10
that someone to embrace discovery
W
hile he never pretended to be a scholar, St. Francis was full of wisdom. He understood the need of a well-rounded education to communicate effectively with others, the kind of education that can only be gained by studying the broad spectrum of the liberal arts. No matter which degree you pursue at Saint Francis, the foundation of your education will be built on a love of discovery and true understanding. You’ll learn by doing, surrounded by professors and peers who care about your success, and you’ll develop the skills and confidence you need to thrive in today’s complex world.
Discover abroad From researching Incan silver mines to finding a home in the hills of southwestern France, students discover new environments and cultures throughout the study abroad programs at Saint Francis. There is always a degree of self-discovery in extensive travel, and students frequently return to Loretto having unearthed new perspectives and truths while growing inwardly as well.
Witness a culture of discovery Learning who you are is greatly influenced by who you’re with. The clubs and service organizations at Saint Francis impact student lives in a very positive way, enabling them to connect over math, Ultimate Frisbee or social work. When students unite, they experience the strength of common passion and discover the good they can do.
Exchange ideas At Saint Francis, we encourage students to learn about themselves as they’re learning about the world around them. The free and open exchange of ideas challenges us and urges us to seek truth and share our skills and abilities with others. Our hope is that students graduate from Saint Francis with the hunger to continue lifelong discovery as they become the ones who change the world.

that someone to encounter joy
S
t. Francis of Assisi was a positive person, remembered for his joyful nature, bright colors and simplicity. As someone who spent so much time in poverty and in service to others, he found purpose and maintained a proper perspective on life. At Saint Francis University, we mimic his focus on joy. Classes are not an education unless they’re combined with common sense, courtesy and community. Whether you find joy most through study, travel, events or sports, here you’ll find the energy and encouragement to appreciate life as you keep the end in sight.
Joy in the journey There is joy in the journey! As our students travel to places like Machu Picchu, London and the Galapagos Islands, they find countless ways to share joy abroad. Time away always grants a renewed perspective on life, and extra measures of joy are found when embracing such adventures as scuba diving in St. Lucia.
Witness a culture of celebration Student life is a celebration. We recognize birthdays, high test scores and life achievements just like any family. Here, common courtesy, hospitality and simplicity make who we are as a community. Regardless of what club or organization you choose, you’ll find the staple of Saint Francis joy.
