COMMENCEMENT May 7 - 8, 2022
Commencement Message A heartfelt welcome to Saint Francis University! Today is a wonderful day of celebration for our graduates, their families and friends, and our entire university community. We give praise to God for bringing them to this threshold moment in their lives. Our graduates availed themselves during their time at Saint Francis University of the opportunity to become that someone that God wants them to be. In class and outside of class they formed a bond with faculty, who have accompanied students on the search for Truth, found in the one true God. Staff and coaches played an important role in their lives as mentors and guides. On a side note, we have a nickname for our undergraduate class of 2022: the Dodrans class. When they arrived in 2018, we pointed out to them that they would graduate in the same year as the University’s Dodransbicentennial celebration. The Class of 2022 very quickly became known as the Dodrans class. What a happy coincidence for them to be associated with a special year of celebration. As the oldest Franciscan-sponsored institution of higher learning in the United States, the 175th anniversary is an exciting milestone event. During the 2022 calendar year, we have been reflecting on the University’s long history. Six friars stepped out in faith in 1847, coming from Ireland and settling in Loretto. There were highs and lows during our history. World War II placed stress on the enrollment-driven institution. The post-World War II era saw much change, including welcoming the first female student, the addition of health sciences programs, and an array of students from the Baby Boomers of the 1960s to Generation Z of today. We have accomplished much, endured much, and look forward to more progress between now and our bicentennial in 2047. Through it all, the constant was the University’s Catholic and Franciscan character. This is evidenced by Franciscan-hearted faculty and staff, as well as a significant number of friars. Saint Francis University promotes an inclusive learning community and a lifelong path to virtue, truth, and compassion demonstrated by staff and students alike. Our graduates go forth with Franciscan values into the world to make disciples of all nations. They champion both the inherent dignity of the individual person and the common good. In the words of Franciscan-hearted Pope Francis, “We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” Today’s graduates are well-prepared to embrace this challenge. They do so civilly and lovingly. In the spirit of Saint Peter (3:15): “But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence.” We ask God’s blessing on our graduates, that they may give prophetic witness in the world. They are well educated and well prepared to be role models and leaders in society. They are ambassadors of the university who go forth animated by Franciscan values. May the Lord bless them and give them peace. Sincerely,
Very Rev. Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., Ph.D. President
Mr. William E. Strickland
School of Health Sciences & Education Speaker Doctor of Humane Letters “We can dramatically alter the structure of someone’s life with art.” Such is the philosophy of Bill Strickland, a man whose life was forever changed by Frank Ross, an art teacher at his high school. After watching Ross work a mound of clay on the potter’s wheel, Strickland became interested in ceramics, which in turn led to the creation of the Manchester’s Craftsman’s Guild. “Mr. Ross literally saved my life,” said Strickland, fondly recalling the moment when Ross told him that he would not let Strickland end up in prison like his buddies. With Ross’ help, Strickland went on to attend college at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in American history and foreign relations. While in college, Strickland created the Manchester Craftsman’s Guild, which began as an after-school arts program in a row house in the North Side of Pittsburgh. The aim of the Guild was to change the lives of young people through art, much like Strickland’s life had been changed by Ross. The Guild was successful in this endeavor. As Strickland put it, “Whatever we were doing at the Guild, students began showing up to school regularly, and started performing better academically.” In 1971, Strickland was asked to assume leadership of the Bidwell Training Center in the hopes that he would be able to turn it around. “When I took over, Bidwell was in bad shape,” he said. “The taxes hadn’t been paid, there were holes in the roof. The whole center was in difficult straights.” Gradually, Strickland began to rebuild Bidwell, including taking over other buildings. Eventually, he merged Manchester Craftsman’s Guild and the Bidwell Training Center into the Manchester Bidwell Corporation. Under Strickland’s direction, the Manchester Bidwell Corporation has expanded, with centers located in Israel, Buffalo, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Erie, and Brockway. Through the corporation, Strickland has influenced and inspired thousands of individuals, changing many lives for the better. In his words, the Manchester Bidwell Corporation is not a program, but a movement. Strickland retired as president five years ago, but still continues to serve as an executive chairman. His desire to help and inspire others drives him, and he encourages the Class of 2022 to take the education they have been given and use it to help those who are less advantaged. “The students at Saint Francis have a special responsibility to do something in the spirit of St. Francis,” he said. “The world is in trouble. We all have a lot of work to do if we want to improve the way things are going.” Strickland said that whatever profession students choose after graduation, they should find some way to volunteer within the community. As Strickland points out, “There is nothing better than the gift of giving.” “A lot of people have worked hard to get you to where you are at today,” said Strickland. “After graduation, you have a responsibility of paying it forward.” Biography written by Scott Riner, a junior English Major.
John H. Garvey, J.D.
Shields School of Business, School of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Mathematics and Francis Worldwide School of Continuing Studies Speaker Doctor of Humane Letters Before becoming the President of The Catholic University of America, Garvey served as the Dean of Boston College Law School for eleven years, from 1999 to 2010, while also serving as the President of the Association of American Law Schools. Professionally, he has practiced law all over the country, including as the Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States from 1981 to 1984. Garvey has written countless books on the subject of law, including Religion and the Constitution, which won the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit book award. Suffice it to say, Garvey has garnered a reputation as an expert in constitutional law, religious liberty, and the first amendment. Garvey credits his father for helping cultivate his interest in the law. “My father was one of my heroes,” he said. “Growing up, I wanted to be just like him in every way. That included being a lawyer.” Following his graduation from the University of Notre Dame in 1970, Garvey went on to obtain his Juris Doctor from Harvard University, officially achieving his dream of becoming a lawyer. In addition to the law, Garvey has a deep-rooted interest in faith: For a brief time, Garvey was a candidate for a Master of Theological Studies degree at Harvard Divinity School. “God plays such a huge role in my life, and in all of our lives,” said Garvey. If there is one thing John Garvey wants the Class of 2022 to do, it’s that they love God and take their vocations seriously—the same thing he wants from his five children and twenty-five grandchildren. “Saint Francis students have the unique opportunity to witness God’s influence in their personal and professional lives,” Garvey said. It is precisely because of The Catholic University’s emphasis on faith that drew Garvey to the school. “Unlike St. Francis, The Catholic University is not a university begun by a religious order,” said Garvey, elaborating that the university emerged after the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops met during the Second Plenary Council in 1866 and discussed the possibility of creating a national Catholic university. In 1882, Pope Leo XIII gave his support to The Catholic University. Five years later, it was incorporated. “Because of our close ties with the Vatican and with the bishops, we keep Catholic values at the forefront of our mind,” said Garvey. In his time as president of the university, Garvey has witnessed thousands of students grow and change. It is for this reason that being president of The Catholic University is his favorite job. “It feels good to make a difference, even if that’s by simply hiring a new faculty or staff member who can change the life of a student,” he said. Garvey is excited to deliver the commencement speech at Saint Francis, as he has a special attachment to Pennsylvania. “I grew up in a steel town in Western Pennsylvania,” Garvey shared. “It’s a great honor to speak at Saint Francis, and it will be well-worth the trip to be back so close to home.” Biography written by Scott Riner, a junior English Major.

The University Mace The mace has been used as a symbol of authority for centuries. Official emblems were carried before ancient Roman magistrates, and in the Middle Ages, ceremonial maces were borne by bodyguards of French and English monarchs. Later, the mace became an important symbol of office in both civil and academic processions. One of the oldest traditions in academia, dating from 1385 at the University of Vienna, the university mace is meant to reflect the character and values of an institution. In academic processions, the mace precedes the University President as a symbol of order and authority, responsibility and service. The re-designed Saint Francis University mace was first used in 2001 to celebrate the 150th Commencement at Saint Francis and our first as a University. The mace is topped with a Celtic cross, signifying the preeminence of Jesus Christ in the life of the University, the Catholic identity of the institution, and the Irish heritage of the six Franciscan friars who established Saint Francis Academy in 1847. The cross rests atop an orb, which symbolizes the global vision and universal mission of Franciscan higher education and represents the many countries of the world from which Saint Francis students, staff, and alumni have come. Encircling the orb is a band of brass inscribed with the three names by which our institution has been known while spanning three centuries: Saint Francis Academy, Saint Francis College, and Saint Francis University. The orb rests upon an octagon, its eight sides symbolizing the eight Articles of the first Charter written by the Franciscan founders for their friary and academy in 1848, and the eight Goals of Franciscan Higher Education at Saint Francis, developed in 1991. The octagon incorporates eight symbolic elements on its lateral faces. On four sides of the octagon, institutional seals are engraved: the seal of Saint Francis Academy, which is also the seal of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis (T.O.R.), the Franciscan Order to which the friars of Saint Francis University belong; the seal of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, that portion of the Third Order Regular in the United States which sponsors the University; the seal of Saint Francis College, the name of the institution for over one hundred years; and the seal of Saint Francis University. The same four seals are represented on the Presidential Chain of Office, worn by the University President for Commencement and other special institutional functions. The other sides of the octagon have these four images: Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron of the University, as he is depicted on the fountain sculpture in the center of the campus mall; the rose window from the University Chapel, portraying “The Canticle of the Creatures” of Saint Francis of Assisi; the Bell Tower, one of the oldest structures on campus and the only remnant of Old Main, once the primary building for the Academy and the College; a pine cone and branch, symbolizing both the newness of life and the evergreen trees that have graced the school “among the pines” from its beginning. Below the octagon, the staff of the mace is decorated with fluting, common to classical columns. The entire mace is constructed from the wood of pine, maple, and black walnut trees, all of which are found on the University campus. The Saint Francis University mace was designed by Dr. Stephen Rombouts, Director, University Archives, from a concept proposed by the Very Rev. Christian R. Oravec, T.O.R., Minister Provincial, Sacred Heart Province, and was constructed by Leonard Siedlarczyk, former master carpenter at Saint Francis. The cross and brass elements were crafted by Servinsky Jewelers of Cresson, Pennsylvania.
Academic Attire The academic attire worn today originated in the universities of the Middle Ages, when a warm gown and hood were useful for scholars and clerics in unheated buildings. The distinctive gown served to set students apart from fellow citizens. The cap, or mortarboard, usually has a black tassel, though doctoral tassels may be of gold. The cap is worn throughout the entire ceremony. Gentlemen remove their caps during prayer, the national anthem, and the alma mater. Degree candidates wear their tassels on the right, shifting them to the left when diplomas are received. Although academic gowns may appear similar, there are differences, which denote the wearer’s educational degree. Sleeves are pointed for the bachelor’s degree, oblong for the master’s, and full, round and bell-shaped for the doctor’s. The doctoral gown may also be faced with velvet. The hoods worn with the gowns also vary according to academic degree, the bachelor’s hood being 36 inches long, the master’s hood 42 inches long and the doctor’s hood 48 inches long. The colored inner lining of the academic hood is the official color of the institution granting the degree. The velvet edging of the hood, the width of which varies from two inches to five inches according to the degree, represents the academic field for which the degree was granted. Colors of the edging on the hoods and the banners on display represent various academic disciplines, including the following: Arts, Letters and Humanities: Business Administration: Economics: Education: Engineering: Fine Arts: Human Resources: Journalism: Law: Library Science: Medicine: Music: Nursing: Occupational Therapy: Philosophy: Physical Therapy: Physician Assistant: Science: Social Science: Social Work: Theology:

Academic Honors Degrees with honors are conferred by the University for exceptional scholastic achievement. The degrees with honors are as follows: Cum Laude for a general Q.P.A. of 3.5 Magna Cum Laude for a general Q.P.A. of 3.7 Summa Cum Laude for a general Q.P.A. of 3.9 Graduates are presented with bronze, silver, and gold medallions to designate these honors. Those receiving the Honors Program diploma have maintained a minimum cumulative Q.P.A. of 3.25 and have completed the Honors Program curriculum, including a thesis requirement. To qualify for Departmental Honors a student must have department approval and must complete an independent study of at least six credits that earns an “A.”
The University Seal The official seal of the University bears the University’s name in Latin, date of founding, coat of arms, and motto. The left side of the shield contains symbols of the Franciscans who founded Saint Francis Academy in 1847 and the friars of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis. On the upper left are the cross among clouds and the Franciscan symbol of the crossed arms of Jesus and Saint Francis of Assisi. In the center a crown of thorns and three nails reflect the passion of Christ and signify sacrifice, conversion and reconciliation. On the lower left, flames issue from the Sacred Heart of Jesus, symbolizing love. The crescent moon symbolizes Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The right side of the shield bears symbols reflecting the University. On the top right, the open book symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. The left page of the book bears a circle, a sign of eternal truth, while the right page shows a straight vertical line, a sign of finite truth. The ray emanating from the book expresses the Franciscan spirit of teaching truth, knowing truth, and loving truth. The ray of light begins as a narrow burst and widens to suggest that truth originates from and is imbued with the divine. On the bottom right, the evergreen tree is a sign of the Irish heritage of the founding Franciscan friars as well as the school’s designation for many years as “the College among the Pines.” Atop the shield rests a crown to represent Saint Louis, King of France, and Saint Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary, patron and patroness of the Third Order of Saint Francis. Below the shield is the Latin motto Virtus, Veritas, Virtus (Valor, Truth, Honor). The entire University community is called to embrace truth with valor and honor.
Alma Mater Hail, Saint Francis, ever true we stand and sing of love for thee from the halls of inspiration onward move in dignity. When our college days are through we will ever loyal be to the memories that we cherish and the love of friends we knew. Chorus Praise thee ever, Alma Mater virtue with love combines proudly now we hail to thee Alma Mater among the pines.
Anthem to Saint Francis University O Saint Francis University you crown the Laurel hills, gracious bounty of the Friars, who have led us where God wills. we recall the days of friendship and we cherish olden times, that we shared with each other among the ancient pines. There we searched for truth and virtue and sought God’s love to know, as we carried forth his message as our Francis, long ago. Interlude And when all has passed and we have gone to meet beyond the pall; we will greet each other in embrace and praise “My God My All.”
