Within the Jesuit tradition, service doesn’t just mean helping others, it means standing together with and for others.

It’s 500 of us doing service each week, even though it’s not required.

When Saint Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), one of the first things he did was establish schools, colleges and seminaries all over Europe. Learn more at sju.edu/jesuit-identity.

That’s the magis. (màh-gis)

What’s magis? It’s a Jesuit principle that underlies everything we do at Saint Joseph’s. Roughly translated, it means “more.” Magis inspires us to think a little broader, work a little harder and accomplish the kinds of things we never dreamed possible. Magis lives in how we make choices – always striving to make each one better than the last. Magis is difficult to put into words, but you’ll know it when you experience it. Where might magis lead you?

The only place that business exists separately from the arts and sciences is on college campuses.

In the real world the two are interrelated and interdependent. That’s why Saint Joseph’s is developing more and more interdisciplinary programs that combine the strengths of our Haub School of Business and College of Arts & Sciences. College of Arts & Sciences All of Saint Joseph’s students spend time in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). In fact, your future as a productive, engaged citizen starts here with your General Education Program courses. Whether you’re destined for business or for the arts and sciences, we help you learn to think critically, analyze information, solve problems and communicate effectively within the context of moral discernment (which is academic speak for doing the right thing).

53109 SJC Viewbook.indd 11

Erivan K. Haub School of Business Businesses say they can always tell an SJU alum. That’s because by the time they graduate, our students know their subjects backward and forward. But that’s not all. Studying business within the Jesuit tradition means you’ll also go out into the world with real work experience gained through internships, co-ops, study abroad and service-learning. Your liberal arts base will give you what it takes to advance in your career through market and industry

changes. And you’ll have a firm ethical foundation that will help ground you in practices that are smart, sustainable and good for all. The Haub School has 14 majors and a variety of minors and interdisciplinary programs ranging from food, pharmaceutical and sports marketing to risk management and insurance to accounting.

The Haub School of Business is accredited by the AACSB in Business and Accounting. Less than five percent of business schools worldwide meet this dual standard of excellence.

live greater.

The CAS is broken up into three divisions: Humanities, Natural Sciences/Mathematics and Social Sciences. You can choose from 38 majors and a wide array of minors and interdisciplinary courses.

Saint Joseph’s is one of only 280 U.S. schools to have a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest American honor society for the arts and sciences.

Honors Program In SJU’s Honors Program, your curriculum will challenge your intellect, your creativity and your time management skills. Honors students attend special events, receptions, concerts and lectures and have opportunities to present research and creative work at national conferences and seminars.

SJU offers more than 50 majors and academic programs.

Faith-Justice Studies Faith-Justice Studies allows you to design an interdisciplinary curriculum that augments your major with questions of faith and social justice. Our Faith-Justice Study Series focuses on current social justice issues, including: Food and Justice, Ethics and Global Economics and Environmental Justice.

Magis calls us to constantly strive to expand ourselves. Your liberal arts courses will introduce you to new subjects, new ideas and new ways of thinking. Along the way, you’ll develop the mental dexterity you’ll need – not just to get that first job, but also to remain marketable throughout your career.

How do we know SJU students are ready to take on the world?

Because they’re already doing it. Saint Joseph’s is not for spectators. So be prepared to get involved. SJU students speak up in the classroom, design and carry out research with faculty mentors, study abroad, and apply what they’re learning through internships, co-ops and service-learning. Internship or Co-op – what’s the difference? Co-ops are full-time, paid positions created through partnerships between SJU and employers. With a co-op, you’ll alternate semesters between work and classes. Internships can be partor full-time, paid or unpaid. Most internships work around your class schedule, so they’re often shorter and more narrowly focused than co-ops. Either way, you’ll have hundreds of opportunities at SJU to connect with the nation’s top employers. Summer is another opportunity. Some people think summer is break time. For SJU Summer Scholars, it’s an opportunity to dive into a

special research or creative project. Summer Scholars receive a stipend and work closely with a faculty mentor. Previous projects have examined nutrition and water quality in Philadelphia, hunger in Guatemala, micro financing in developing nations, and trends in marketing children’s clothing. sju.edu/ssp Apply for your passport now. It’s not enough to look at pictures of faraway places. You need to experience the world for yourself. You can find SJU Hawks studying all over the world: South Africa, China, Italy, Spain, Australia, England, Ireland and New Zealand. With study-abroad options ranging

from short, faculty-led study tours to academic-year abroad programs, you’ll be globetrotting before you know it. sju.edu/studyabroad Your education is not all about you. Saint Joseph’s will show you how to use your academic powers for the good of others. Through a wide range of service-learning programs in the community, SJU students tackle such issues as poverty, AIDS, violence, mental illness and racism. sju.edu/servicelearning

When you’re down by 10 and charge back to win. That’s the magis.

If you’re into March Madness, you already know SJU. The Hawks men’s basketball team regularly sees postseason play, and recently made it as far as the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. (Inside scoop: Those in the know tell us next year’s team looks pretty promising.) Hawk pride covers more than basketball. Saint Joseph’s fields 20 varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Big 5. Our cross country team regularly finishes at or near the top of its conference. SJU rowing teams have a long tradition of success at the Dad Vail Regatta and other prestigious national competitions. And our baseball, softball, field hockey and tennis teams have new, state-of-the-art facilities on the Maguire Campus.

Hawks don’t stop at being exceptional athletes; they’re also stellar scholars. Recently, 275 of them were recognized on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, achieving a 3.0 GPA or better. Ninety-three of those athletes were also included in the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll with 3.5 GPAs or above.

The program wins support from a large corporate sponsor.

Calls start coming in from the community with donations and questions about starting backpack drives for other schools.

Any one of your choices could start a Magis Effect, but you won’t always know it. In the moment, the choice itself may appear insignificant, but the results can be profound and far-reaching. The magis calls us to make each of our choices just a little better than the last. Every day, you have the power to shape a greater world – one choice at a time.

Philly is fantastic for students. Philadelphia has more public art than any other U.S. city. And Fairmount Park is the largest landscaped urban park in the world.

53109 SJC Viewbook.indd 20

Our city’s history could be a credit course of its own. Many of the nation’s most important events – including the signing of the Declaration of Independence – happened within a few miles of our campus. Thirteen Fortune 500 companies call this area home, which is handy when you’re looking for internships. And when you’re ready for a break from the books, you won’t have to go far for great food, music or art. Pro sports fans also have plenty to cheer for in Philadelphia: the Phillies, 76ers, Eagles and Flyers are all our home teams.

Each week, more than 500 students give back. With others. For others. Service is one of the key elements of a Jesuit education. Though it’s not a graduation requirement, hundreds of Saint Joseph’s students serve every week. And hundreds more participate in our Alternative Spring Break programs. In the Jesuit tradition, service is about more than just helping others; it’s standing with them.

53109 SJC Viewbook.indd 21

There are two Campus Ministry programs especially designed for first-year students. Ignite is an overnight off-campus experience where you can get to know other new students and ease your transition to college. The other program is MAGIS, a yearlong, student-led service and social program. Each week, you’ll do service and learn about the social justice issues that are addressed at different community organizations.

One of Saint Joseph’s most popular away programs is Appalachian Experience. Every spring break, 400 SJU students work on Habitat for Humanity sites in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. Other service teams have served communities in New Orleans, Bolivia, Ecuador and El Salvador.

What more will you d Don’t expect to sit around your dorm room. Hawks tend to be doers – and there is no shortage of Hawk Pride around here. You’ll have all kinds of opportunities to explore your interests, express yourself and apply what you’re learning. If you’re not a little amazed by what you’re doing, you’re missing out. Shelter: Life in a residence hall makes it easier for you to meet new friends and make yourself at home. That’s why all first- and second-year students at SJU live on campus. Most freshmen live in LaFarge, McShain or Sourin halls or in our new high-rise, Villiger Hall. They’re all wireless, cable ready and equipped with laundry rooms, study rooms and lounge areas. sju.edu/reslife

Food: Hungry? Need a break? You’ll find 10 different dining spots on campus. They range from our main student dining hall in Campion to P.O.D. Express, Starbucks and Cosi. Check out the various menus and meal plans online. sju.edu/dining

Purpose: Explore what gives life meaning. SJU has more than 100 student clubs and organizations. Take note, athletes: last year, more than 500 students participated in SJU’s 22 club sports. sju.edu/campus-life/clubsorganizations

How do SJU graduates live greater? Dr. Elizabeth Hagen

Joseph J. McLaughlin, Jr.

SJU’s 50,000 graduates lead successful lives across the globe. They’re in business, medicine and law. They work for nonprofits and Fortune 500s. No matter where they’ve gone in life, they share a commitment to social justice and giving back. In fact, Saint Joseph’s National Alumni Board launched Global Community Day, where SJU graduates all over the world unite to serve their local communities.

Our six-months-after graduation stats are impressive (check out the chart below). But if you really want to know the full value of an SJU education, look at alums who’ve been out in the world for a while. Scholarships: Every student who completes an application for admission is automatically considered for merit scholarships. Typical recipients have a minimum B+ average and competitive SAT or ACT scores. Awards are made based on the strength of the applicant pool. Saint Joseph’s four merit scholarships are valued from partial to full tuition. • Board of Trustees Scholarship • Presidential Scholarship • University Scholarship • Achievement Scholarship Certain scholarships, including the Board of Trustees and the McNulty scholarships, require a separate application.

Financial Assistance: Saint Joseph’s University works with families to help make an SJU education affordable through need-based grants, loans and federal workstudy. To qualify for need-based financial assistance, you must fill out and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The preferred FAFSA deadline is February 15, and SJU’s federal school code is 003367.

Approximately 93 percent of the SJU student body receives some form of financial assistance, and in 2012 Saint Joseph’s awarded more than $50 million in institutional merit and need-based aid.
