How do we know SJU students are ready to take on the world?
Because they’re already doing it. Saint Joseph’s is not for spectators. So be prepared to get involved. SJU students speak up in the classroom, design and carry out research with faculty mentors, study abroad, and apply what they’re learning through internships, co-ops and service-learning. Internship or Co-op – what’s the difference? Co-ops are full-time, paid positions created through partnerships between SJU and employers. With a co-op, you’ll alternate semesters between work and classes. Internships can be partor full-time, paid or unpaid. Most internships work around your class schedule, so they’re often shorter and more narrowly focused than co-ops. Either way, you’ll have hundreds of opportunities at SJU to connect with the nation’s top employers. Summer is another opportunity. Some people think summer is break time. For SJU Summer Scholars, it’s an opportunity to dive into a
special research or creative project. Summer Scholars receive a stipend and work closely with a faculty mentor. Previous projects have examined nutrition and water quality in Philadelphia, hunger in Guatemala, micro financing in developing nations, and trends in marketing children’s clothing. sju.edu/ssp Apply for your passport now. If you’re into March Madness, you already know SJU. The Hawks men’s basketball team regularly sees postseason play, and recently made it as far as the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. (Inside scoop: Those in the know tell us next year’s team looks pretty promising.) Hawk pride covers more than basketball. Saint Joseph’s fields 20 varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Big 5. Our cross country team regularly finishes at or near the top of its conference. SJU rowing teams have a long tradition of success at the Dad Vail Regatta and other prestigious national competitions. And our baseball, softball, field hockey and tennis teams have new, state-of-the-art facilities on the Maguire Campus.

Our city’s history could be a credit course of its own. Many of the nation’s most important events – including the signing of the Declaration of Independence – happened within a few miles of our campus. Thirteen Fortune 500 companies call this area home, which is handy when you’re looking for internships. And when you’re ready for a break from the books, you won’t have to go far for great food, music or art. Each week, more than 500 students give back. With others. For others. Service is one of the key elements of a Jesuit education. Though it’s not a graduation requirement, hundreds of Saint Joseph’s students serve every week. And hundreds more participate in our Alternative Spring Break programs. In the Jesuit tradition, service is about more than just helping others; it’s standing with them.

There are two Campus Ministry programs especially designed for first-year students. Ignite is an overnight off-campus experience where you can get to know other new students and ease your transition to college. The other program is MAGIS, a yearlong, student-led service and social program. Each week, you’ll do service and learn about the social justice issues that are addressed at different community organizations.
One of Saint Joseph’s most popular away programs is Appalachian Experience. Every spring break, 400 SJU students work on Habitat for Humanity sites in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. Other service teams have served communities in New Orleans, Bolivia, Ecuador and El Salvador.

Under his leadership, the company was named by the Philadelphia Business Journal one of the region’s largest supporters of charitable causes. In 2009, Sr. Mary Scullion, RSM ‘76, was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” for her work with the homeless. Michael J. Hagan, ’85, was Forbes magazine’s 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year. He’s also a huge Hawk supporter, which is why we now have home basketball games in Hagan Arena. Scholarships: Every student who completes an application for admission is automatically considered for merit scholarships. Typical recipients have a minimum B+ average and competitive SAT or ACT scores. Awards are made based on the strength of the applicant pool. Saint Joseph’s four merit scholarships are valued from partial to full tuition. • Board of Trustees Scholarship • Presidential Scholarship • University Scholarship • Achievement Scholarship Certain scholarships, including the Board of Trustees and the McNulty scholarships, require a separate application.
Financial Assistance: Saint Joseph’s University works with families to help make an SJU education affordable through need-based grants, loans and federal workstudy. To qualify for need-based financial assistance, you must fill out and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The preferred FAFSA deadline is February 15, and SJU’s federal school code is 003367.
