Philadelphia Terminology The Schuylkill (Skoo-Kul) Otherwise known as I-76, the Schuylkill expressway is a highway that goes through southwestern Montgomery County and the city of Philadelphia.

Yous When speaking to more than one person, Philadelphians generally do not refer to them with “ya’ll.” We just make the word ‘you’ plural by adding an ‘s.’

Blue Route I-476. Opened in 1991, it is the 21.5 mile Mid-County Expressway that stretches from I-95 in Woodlyne, Delaware County to the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Plymouth Meeting. The name “Blue Route” derives from the planning process which started in the 1950’s, when engineers developed a number of possible routes and named them according to various colors. There were a number of other possible roads including a Red Route and a Yellow Route.

Tastykakes A Philadelphia staple that started in 1914, Tastykake has been supplying Philadelphia with its delicious sweets and pastries for decades. KandyKakes and Butterscotch Krimpets are very popular.

Water Ice (Wooder Ice) You may know this better as Italian Ice. Here in Philadelphia, we call that delicious fruity summer treat water ice. And if you really want to fit in, say it like we do – “Wooder ice!” Scrapple Brought to the area by the Pennsylvania Dutch, Scrapple mainly consists of pork scraps and trimmings combined with flour and spices. (Many but not all) Philadelphians love it for its original texture and flavor. Wiz Wit vs. Wiz Wit’out This is the proper language to use when ordering a Philly Cheesesteak. You either want the cheesesteak “wit” or “witout” fried onions. Cheeseteaks were traditionally topped with Provolone cheese, however, the "Cheez Wiz" topped version has grown to be very popular. "When in Rome.....um..Philly!” The Mummers Local clubs that compete in one of four categories (Comics, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades) on New Year’s Day.
