Connect with curiosity. Dear Saint Louis Science Center Friends, This fall marks an incredibly exciting time at the Science Center. As you see in this issue of NewScience, we’ve launched a new brand for the Science Center. While this includes a new logo and colors, that is just the surface of this branding process. The Science Center is proud of having been a longtime St. Louis treasure, and as we continue to evolve over time, it is crucial to make certain that our brand identity, promise and narrative continue to keep our organization fresh and relevant to our guests, community and the larger science and museum communities. This also helps to focus our endeavors, including special exhibitions, updates to galleries, onsite and offsite educational programs, and other activities to ensure we are continuing to accomplish our mission “to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning.” Innovation is key to science and discovery, and this branding process is innovation in action. By refreshing and refining the look and feel of our organization and the way we share our story, we keep the Science Center at the cutting edge of science education and learning. We hope that you enjoy learning about the process behind the brand update for the Science Center on pages 4–7. You will learn about the research and background of the branding process and what you can expect to see from us in the future. On behalf of the marketing department and all of the staff at the Science Center, we thank you for your ongoing support as we strive to continue to be recognized as a world-class science museum. As it says in our brand narrative on page 6, “We’re putting St. Louis at the center of science, and science at the center of a more connected world.”
Sincerely,
Ann Balsamo Chief Marketing and Communications Officer

Saint Louis Science Center Unveils a New Brand Logo and Identity The Saint Louis Science Center has been recognized as one of the city’s treasures for decades. And for many years, we have had a familiar logo, one based on our iconic buildings—the James S. McDonnell Planetarium and the OMNIMAX® Theater dome on our building at 5050 Oakland Avenue—as well as the Gateway Arch. While this logo has served us well and is recognizably ours, we feel that the Science Center is evolving and that it is time to refresh our brand, including the logo, as we move into the future and serve as the regional connector to science. In 2017, we engaged an outside agency, Atomicdust, and embarked on a process of examining who we are and who we aspire to be. We also began a process of examining how we engage with our community and how that aligns with our brand. Over the course of many months, we now have a new brand identity that officially launches with this edition of NewScience.
This rebrand is not just a new look for the sake of a new look. There are some other specific reasons why we are rebranding:
Evolution
We are not the same organization as we were ten or fifteen years ago. We are doing things differently, creating and building in collaborative ways that strive to always be open to new ideas and innovative ways of thinking.
Expansion
In addition to adding our GROW Pavilion and gallery and other ongoing changes within the Science Center, we are more than just our buildings. Both in the St. Louis community and in the global community of science and educators, we are expanding and changing both physically and by the ways we connect people with science.
Inclusion
We are able to fulfill our mission and remain accessible as one of the only free science museums in country through the support of our members, donors, visitors and taxpayers.
Aspiration
We are thinking bigger and challenging ourselves to innovate, experiment and try new things. We have a very big and attainable goal: To be the Regional Leader in Connecting People with Science.

We have a new logo Our new logo is both a reflection of the fundamental element of the atom as well as our city and region and the Gateway Arch. We are also embracing a new color palette of four accent colors on a navy background—bright green, teal, red and yellow hues. When choosing colors we wanted to have colors that ignite an interest and allow for variety within our color family, as well as be flexible, friendly, traditional, yet bold.
And we have a new tagline: Connect with curiosity. We believe that the more we help our community to keep connecting with their sense of curiosity and discovery, we can continue to create and grow generations of science and technology learners.

New Perspective on Who We Are Welcome to your museum. To all the worlds inside it, big and small. To atoms and oceans, sand and stardust, dinosaurs and dark matter. Welcome to aha moments that launch a million questions— questions as infinite and strange as the cosmos, and just as thrilling to explore. The Saint Louis Science Center is yours: free to enter, to experience, to shape, to share. By creating a place where everyone can discover together, we’re forging the future of our region. We’re putting St. Louis at the center of science and science at the center of a more connected world. The Saint Louis Science Center combines experimentation, creativity and play to help people discover a passion for science and technology. With more than 700 interactive experiences, our GROW Pavilion and outdoor gallery, our famous McDonnell Planetarium and our five-story OMNIMAX® Theater, we invite everyone to create a more connected world through the power of their curiosity.
Free For Everyone As one of the only free nonprofit science museums in the country, we invite curious minds from all backgrounds to explore, create and share their ideas. Support from our visitors and the community helps us create innovative science and technology programs for people throughout St. Louis.
Educational We help people discover the genius in themselves and others with award-winning educational programs, exhibits and attractions designed to challenge and connect people—from students to scientists, to children and adults.
Experimental To make the search for knowledge feel like an adventure, we strive to be the first to introduce new and unusual discoveries, technologies, programs and learning techniques to our region.
Unexpected From the stories we tell to the partnerships we create, we aim to always surprise ourselves, our visitors and our community.
As we look at our accomplishments of 2018, including the augmentation of Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission, a renovated Mission: Mars gallery, and our soon-to-open GameXPloration exhibit, our team is working in a way that is new to the Science Center and to the museum industry. The Science Center is listening to our community as we build and innovate to reflect the needs of the changing world. It’s not just a new logo and language, it’s a new way of discovering, exploring, creating and connecting in a way that will forge the future for science in our region.

Science Center Hosts NASA In-Flight Education
Planetarium Manager Attends International Conference
In July, Saint Louis Science Center was selected by NASA to host a live question-and-answer session with Dr. Serena M. Auñón-Chancellor, crew member aboard the International Space Station (ISS). More than 150 children from local education programs were able to attend the event where students asked questions ranging from, “What’s the most fun part about being an astronaut?” to “Would my fidget spinner work in space?” The public was able to view the discussion live in the Planetarium as it aired on NASA TV.
In July, Planetarium Manager Anna Green attended the International Planetarium Society Conference in Toulouse, France. She presented language immersion in planetaria, best practices for teaching astronomy to the youngest audiences, and how to reach visitors who are visually impaired. “I am excited to share what I learned to benefit the Saint Louis Science Center, the Planetarium team and, most importantly of all, our visitors,” says Green. Her trip included a visit to Pic du Midi Observatory (featured above) in the French Pyrenees which produced some of the early lunar photography used by NASA and the St. Louis-based Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC) to map the moon for the Apollo missions.
NASA STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative (EDPC) Workshop The Science Center welcomed 26 educators to NASA’s Lunar and Meteorite Sample Disk Certification Program workshop led by NASA EPDC Specialist John Weis (featured left, center) in July. The K-12 educators from as far as Springfield, Missouri completed the program certifying them to borrow actual moon rock and meteorite sample discs directly from NASA. “We are committed to being the connector for STEM learning and are thrilled that we could bring this special opportunity from NASA to educators and libraries throughout our region,” says Jared Farmer, manager of Teacher Programs. “Learning from actual samples made possible by NASA space missions will bring a unique learning experience to the students.”
