Dear Science Center friends, It is hard to believe we are ready to mark the end of 2017! This year has seen many successes for the Science Center, and we are poised to take those achievements into 2018. Our special exhibition, The Discovery of King Tut, brought visitors from across the country to the Saint Louis Science Center. Egypt and the study of archaeology continue to amaze people of all ages and backgrounds. The OMNIMAX® Theater introduced three hit films (Extreme Weather, Dream Big: Engineering Our World and Amazon Adventure). The James S. McDonnell Planetarium hosted an international planetarium conference, where the team was able to show off new LED lights, which make the stars more than two times brighter, while conserving energy. We hosted many world-renowned experts for STEM programs and presentations, including Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space; Dr. Bob Brier, known as Mr. Mummy; and Flint water researcher Dr. Marc Edwards. The Science Center served as the region’s expert for the Great American Eclipse in August, hosting experts from NASA and the local community. Through media segments and articles, social media, a special exhibit and other presentations, we were able to reach millions of people to educate about this amazing event and make sure the public knew how to view it safely. Moving into 2018, we are thrilled to be opening new films, beginning with Journey to the South Pacific in January and Pandas in April. We will open Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission on April 14. The Science Center is one of just four institutions selected nationwide by the Smithsonian Institution to host this exhibition, and we are thrilled to bring this to St. Louis and tell the story of the historic moon landing, as well as highlight the ways our city contributed to the space program. Beginning with this issue, NewScience will be distributed quarterly, rather than every other month. This schedule will allow us to provide you with more in-depth content, while ensuring we are being environmentally responsible. On that note, please remember that if you would prefer the sustainable choice of receiving NewScience digitally, you can sign up by sending an email to memberships@slsc.org. Your membership to the Saint Louis Science Center helps us to provide experiences and STEM programs that advance our mission “to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning.” We are truly thankful for our Members and appreciate your ongoing support. The Science Center wishes you a wonderful 2018. Happy New Year. Sincerely,
Bert Vescolani

NEW in the Discovery Room WONDERFUL
WATERS
A big splash was made in the Discovery Room with the installation of a new multidimensional water table. The wet and wild wonderland is designed to engage children of all ages with learning about the world of water from the mountains to the city and even geysers. Watch out for an occasional rain shower as the children fill the clouds and can feel the rain sprinkle down to the Earth below. The youngest guests will enjoy scooping and pouring in the lower basin and watching water flow through the water wheel and down the waterfall.

Many of history’s greatest scientists, tech innovators, engineers and mathematicians also have been artists! The Discovery Room now has the perfect place to explore the “a” for art at the STEaM Easel. Paint, spray, squeegee and create! Plus, there is even a new childsized sink perfect for cleanup.
SCIENCE
Learn about yourself, other scientists and the work that they are doing. Our first topic is the tongue - it helps you form sounds to speak and move food while you eat. Some scientists are even learning about exercises you can do to keep your tongue fit as you age. The topics will change, so come back often to explore new things!

NEW in the Structures Gallery Water Infrastructure Exhibit
SEATS Your gateway to the stars just got more comfortable with all new reclined chairs just right for viewing each and every amazing star show.
Discover the hidden journey of water as it goes to and from homes and businesses. The all new hands-on activities include driving an inspection robot through St. Louis’ sewer pipes and crawling through a large sewer pipe for a look at the many issues facing infrastructure systems. Calculate just how much water you use every day and see the “virtual water” used in producing some of our favorite things.
we would like to hear from you! This new exhibit dedicated to water infrastructure is a pilot for even more changes in our Structures Gallery. We would appreciate your feedback on the new exhibit as we strive to provide a positive learning experience for everyone. Visit slsc.org/exhibitworks for a short survey.

stem spotlight
Dedicated to being a regional leader in STEM education, the Saint Louis Science Center was proud to host the first workshop of the award-winning Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway® initiative for 100 educators from 13 schools and districts this past September. The initiative was developed by the Carnegie Science Center and is built on the belief that schools can improve their STEM education practices through a positive, collaborative approach. “We were thrilled with the outcomes of the inaugural workshop and the excellent framework the Carnegie STEM Pathway provided for assessing current STEM-related efforts and action plans for process improvement,” says Pamela Braasch, Saint Louis Science Center director of Education. After a full day, the teams developed action plans and discussed resources for the next step of implementation. The educators will return for two more workshops in January and May of next year. The Science Center became a Carnegie STEM Pathway provider with the support of two major grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and The Boeing Company. With a goal of reaching a wide range of both public and private K-12 schools, over 300 applications were distributed to St. Louis area school districts in Missouri and Illinois, and 13 “Pathway Partner” schools and districts were selected for FREE workshops. The program was first piloted with Compton Drew Investigative Learning Center Middle School. The entire faculty gathered at the Saint Louis Science Center in August to evaluate the quality of their STEM offerings using the Carnegie Stem Pathway framework. An action plan was developed, and Compton Drew will meet again with the Science Center’s team as they journey toward improving STEM education. Over the next school year and beyond, the “Pathway Partner” schools and districts will continue to collaborate as they focus on improving their STEM programs. The Saint Louis Science Center looks forward to welcoming the next class of Carnegie STEM Pathway participants. Steve is a long-time supporter of the Saint Louis Science Center as an Einstein Society member and believes that “philanthropy is a learned behavior.” This year, his son Logan followed his father’s philanthropic lead and also joined the Einstein Society. With a business degree from Drake University and his J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law, Steve started his career in the Trust Division at Boatman’s Bank before joining Moneta Group in 1986, where he began working with a large number of successful families for financial planning and investment matters. He also co-founded Argent Capital Management in 1998, which serves as a manager of U.S. stock portfolios for both institutions and individuals. Logan began his career in financial services at Wells Fargo in St. Louis after earning his business degree from the University of Richmond. After a move to Richmond where he worked as a financial analyst and received his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, he returned home six years ago to begin working with clients of both Moneta and Argent.
