Dear Saint Louis Science Center friends, The excitement is building for our largest special exhibition in 2017, The Discovery of King Tut. This exhibition provides a stunning peek at recreations of more than 1,000 priceless artifacts as they were when Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered. It has toured worldwide, and we are thrilled to bring it to St. Louis for the first time. The discovery of the tomb is hailed as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century, and this exhibition transports guests back in time to witness it. The Discovery of King Tut will open on May 27, but you can purchase tickets now by visiting slsc.org. In February, we announced that the Saint Louis Science Center is one of four museums across the country selected to host Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission, a traveling special exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. I attended the national announcement and had the opportunity to see the artifacts that will be included in the exhibition. You will not want to miss the chance to see this piece of history and share it with your family. Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission will feature the Command Module, Columbia, marking the first time in 46 years the module has left the museum, as well as 20 artifacts from the historic mission. We will host the exhibition during the 49th anniversary of the moon landing! The exhibit will be here from April 14 to September 3, 2018. With spring in full bloom, GROW is bustling with activity! We hope you will join us on the weekends for special activities and events. Also, if you are looking for advice on creating your own garden at home, come in and ask our GROW staff for some tips. I know I am looking forward to sampling some of the fresh produce straight from our gardens! This summer we will kick off a new series of events called Science at Sunset. On Thursdays, from June 1 through August 10, the Science Center will be open until 8pm with activities for the whole family. Some activities include food and drink specials, presentations and a chance to see our galleries after hours and enjoy The Discovery of King Tut at a discounted price. Stay tuned for more details! We wouldn’t be able to do everything we do at the Science Center without our amazing volunteers. With National Volunteer Week falling in April, I want to recognize their priceless contributions. Each day our volunteers work hand in hand with our staff to help deliver a great Science Center experience, ensure all of the “behind the scenes” jobs are managed and provide unique knowledge to our staff and guests alike. In fact, in 2016, volunteers donated more than 20,000 hours in time! We are truly grateful for our volunteers who help us achieve our mission. We have opportunities available, so if you love the Science Center and would like to inspire others by donating your time and talents, please contact 314.289.4412, volunteer@ slsc.org or visit slsc.org/volunteer-opportunities. We appreciate your continued support of the Saint Louis Science Center. Your support helps us make a difference. Sincerely,
Bert Vescolani

Dr. Sheyna Gifford-MD Scientist-In-Residence This newly established initiative at the Science Center aims to bring scientists and their research to the public. Through educational programming, guests are able to interact with scientists and learn first-hand about current topics and exciting careers in science. The scientists also advise Science Center staff to identify and develop science content to enrich the guest experience in exhibits and programs.

When not deployed on simulated missions to deep space, Dr. Sheyna Gifford can be found plotting outof-this-world space exhibits for the Saint Louis Science Center. Since returning from a one-year “Mars” mission, Dr. Gifford has been speaking at venues across this planet and teaching biology, earth science and aerospace for the Civilian Air Patrol, as well as working on the design of a planetary exploration suit for upcoming NASA missions. Dr. Gifford and five crewmates were members of NASA’s HI-SEAS mission to study the effects of isolation on future manned missions to Mars by simulating the experience from inside a

1,200-square-foot dome perched on a volcanic plain in Hawaii. The crew survived 366 days of living in the solar-powered, uninsulated dome that came equipped with freeze-dried meat, composting toilets and personal living spaces smaller than Hawaiian resort closets. The crew donned analog space suits for outdoor excursions through the sharp and crumbly volcanic rock that resembles the Mars terrain. “One of the most remarkable things about simulating life on another planet is that you realize how bold and brilliant human beings can be when required,” Gifford said. A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Gifford attended the University of California, Berkeley before embarking on advanced degrees that would
help bring her love of astronomy together with practical skills for everyday living on Mars, like medicine and biotechnology - and journalism. “A lot of what happens in and around space education is outreach,” she said. “Though this may soon change, right now, only a few people can go to space. So we need to bring space to them.” Dr. Gifford will be involved in enhancing the guest experience in the Mission: Mars exhibit, drawing from her own adventures as a scientist on NASA’s Mars simulation, the HI-SEAS mission. She has also been tapped to collaborate with Science Center staff to design activities for professional development workshops for educators.

How to See the Total Solar Eclipse SAFELY WHY can seeing an eclipse be dangerous even when the sky is dark? Because the sky will be very dark when much of the sun’s surface is obscured by the moon, the remaining slivers of the sun will still be intensely bright. The sun is 400,000 times brighter than the moon, so even looking at slivers of sun can damage your vision.
HOW can viewing the eclipse damage your eyes? The sun outputs more light than the eye can handle. When looking at extremely bright light sources, like the sun, the retina can be damaged due to too much exposure to high energy wavelengths of light. Damage to the retina can be permanent and result in vision loss.
Learn more at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium • NEW Live Sky: Eclipse at 2:30pm daily. Includes mini-workshop and eclipse glasses. $1 Members, $7 non-member adults, $6 children/seniors.
• Solar Saturdays on the third Saturday of every month. Demonstrations on how to see the sun safely and solar observations (weather permitting).
• Online information at stlouiseclipse2017.org or eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov.
WHAT are the safest ways to see the eclipse? Solar filters found in eclipse glasses can reduce the sun’s brightness to 1/1000th of a percent of its normal appearance. Pinhole projection method is also safe—with your back to the sun, sunlight streams through the pinhole which then projects an image in front of you.
Eclipse Field Trip Students will join James S. McDonnell Planetarium educators to explore the August 21 total solar eclipse. The field trip package includes exploration of planetarium exhibits, demonstrations on safe solar observing, solar observations (weather permitting) and Live Sky: Eclipse star show. For grades 3-12.
