Dear Saint Louis Science Center Friends, This year is off to a great start at the Saint Louis Science Center. In January, we opened Da Vinci The Exhibition, an exhibition that examines the scientific and engineering discoveries of a genius known primarily for his artistic achievements. This exhibition explores his inventions from more than 500 years ago that foreshadowed many modern-day technologies. Guests can see how da Vinci’s studies of science and nature translated into advances in engineering, flight, hydraulics, light and more. This exhibition is very popular among all ages. I hope you’ve had a chance to visit the newly renovated OMNIMAX® Theater, now the only movie theater in the St. Louis area that offers a theater-wide hearing loop, also known as a telecoil or induction loop. The loop system allows sound traveling through the audio system to be sent directly to the telecoil in a hearing device, like a hearing aid or cochlear implant. The system also eliminates background noise, which increases the quality of the experience as well. With the loop system and other increased accessibility features to the OMNIMAX Theater, we are working hard to ensure that the needs of all of our guests are met. In May, we will be opening the next special exhibition, Mummies of the World: The Exhibition. It features mummies from throughout the world, including Europe, South America and Ancient Egypt, as well as state-of-the-art multimedia stations that take visitors on a 4,500-year journey to explore the mummies’ history and origins. This is the largest exhibition of real mummies and related artifacts ever assembled. Guests will be able to explore how mummification happens, where the mummies came from and who they were. This will be a truly unique and fascinating exhibition. As we are gearing up for the busy summer months, our education team is preparing to welcome hundreds of campers to our programs. Summer camp is a great way to keep your child’s mind engaged in learning during the summer months, while also having a lot of fun. Members receive a discount as well as early registration. Throughout the year, you will see STEM Days, when we have special programs around topics like Pi Day, Spring Astronomy Day and Velociraptor Awareness Day. These are a few of the special experiences that we make available in order to spark curiosity and ignite interest in learning about science. You can find details on pages 5 and 11 of this issue of NewScience. Thank you so much for your support as a member of the Science Center. Your gift of membership helps us to continue to connect the St. Louis region with science, discovery and exploration. It is our hope that as you visit the Science Center and bring your family and friends, your curiosity is sparked and your interest in learning continues to grow.

. Sincerely,

Todd President and CEO

FEBRUARY 18 90th Anniversary of Pluto’s Discovery

APRIL 11 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13

In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh was building breakthrough telescopes that helped land him a job at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. He was able to take photographs of the night sky with his inventions which led him to the discovery of Pluto.

In 1970, astronauts James “Jim” Lovell, John “Jack” Swigert and Fred Haise launched into space. A faulty oxygen tank exploded and the spacecraft lost oxygen and electricity. By rationing food and water and huddling together in the Lunar Module, they safely returned back to Earth.

The Saint Louis Science Center’s hidden gem

Did you know that the Science Center has a collection of over 100,000 objects? Our beginnings as the Academy of Science of St. Louis in 1856 and then the formation of the Museum of Science and Natural History in 1959 allowed for the collection of a wide variety of artifacts. In 1985, the Museum of Science and Natural History merged with the city’s Planetarium to become the Saint Louis Science Center. Artifacts in the Collections document the region’s natural and technological history and make up the most extensive collection of cataloged artifacts of any general science museum in the state. We are one of the few science centers to have a Collections. The Science Center has been able to develop public programs that combine the use of artifacts, specimens and hands-on exhibits. Collections categories consist of zoology, archaeology, space artifacts, transportation and more.

GALLERY SPOTLIGHT

Igniting STEM curiosity at the Saint Louis Science Center. WHAT SPARKS YOUR CURIOSITY? This is the question that guides the creative process behind program development and inspires educators at the Science Center. The gallery team develops content and programs that ignites interest in STEM and inspire each eager mind that walks into the building. Hands-on activities take place daily and range from cart-based demonstrations to half-day field trip packages for school groups. Many of the events and activities transpire and evolve because of you, our dedicated members, and your interest in learning. “It all starts with curiosity, whether it be something our educators are curious about or an intriguing question they receive on the floor with our guests! From there, themes and big ideas are developed into various offerings, “ says Liz Senzee, Associate Director, Gallery Programs. We hope you feel encouraged to ask any of the gallery staff your science questions. Until then, stay curious.

The Seaperch Competition On April 18, the YES program will be sending four engineering teams to the Seaperch competition for the St. Louis Region at Pattonville High School. The team will be joining 500 other regional students in competition. Last year, YES took home 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th place.

engineering notebook to the judges and two timed events – an underwater obstacle course and an objective course - with Navy divers in the pool as safety officers and competition judges.

YES Program Awarded Grants for STEM Education The Saint Louis Science Center gratefully acknowledges the generosity of supporters for our nationally-recognized YES program.

The Seaperch competition is a US Navysponsored educational event centered around an underwater submersible (ROV) that is built from a kit. The teens construct underwater thrusters and then build the ROV controllers from networking cables, circuit boards and off-the-shelf buttons and switches. The competition involves showing an

Green Teen Alliance In Recognition of their Support for Environmental Education in Missouri

YES Teens Recognized in GTA Award The GTA (Green Teen Alliance) was awarded the 2019 “Outstanding Service Award to a Youth Group” from the Missouri Environmental Education Association (MEEA). Participating groups in this program include the Saint Louis Science Center’s YES teens, the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Outdoor Youth Corps, Forest Park Forever’s Nature Works, and the Audubon Center at Riverlands’ Flight Crew. MEEA’s award is in recognition of the GTA’s support for Environmental Education in Missouri.

The GTA provides youth with summer job opportunities in environmental science. The YES teen group consisted of 12 teens from the Agriscience Component. In addition to studying nature and learning about careers, the teens brought groups of children to the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Litzsinger Road Ecology Center to explore woodlands, prairies, and a creek. The teens worked with the children to increase their comfort level with and curiosity about the natural world.

The American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation with its long-standing commitment to and support of the communities they serve has generously provided support to our YES program. The grant funding will continue to advance the YES program’s innovative model as it supports underserved teens to be STEM learners and realize their potential as young STEM professionals.

Norman J. Stupp Foundation An outstanding supporter of making a difference in the St. Louis Community by helping youth succeed, the Norman J. Stupp Foundation has awarded funding to the YES program. The funds will support the YES program’s operations and programming which benefit underserved teens in our community by helping them develop the STEM knowledge, aspirations, and skills needed to succeed in college and future careers.

The Saigh Foundation The Saigh Foundation has continued its legacy of support for area youth by providing a generous donation to the YES program. The Foundation’s support will help extend the positive impact the YES program has on the lives of the YES teens.
