WINTE R 2018 –2019
Connect with curiosity. Dear Saint Louis Science Center Friends, This year has been remarkable at the Saint Louis Science Center. The opportunity to host the Apollo 11 Command Module and other artifacts from the first lunar landing mission with the special exhibition Destination Moon was certainly an experience we will all remember for a lifetime. Destination Moon was followed with the introduction of the new Saint Louis Science Center brand and logo in early September. In October, we opened GameXPloration, a new exhibit developed by our Science Center team about games and gaming. It has been wonderful to see multiple generations of families—and even strangers—connect around shared experiences with games. Our Youth Exploring Science (YES) program is celebrating a big milestone—20 outstanding years of working with youth throughout their high school years to build their interest in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM), and to prepare them for college and careers. We are proud of the 1,098 teens that have graduated from our nationally-recognized program in the past two decades. You can read more about our YES program later in this issue. As we near the end of 2018, we have kicked off a new holiday tradition for St. Louis: Science Illuminated. For many St. Louisans, the appearance of the red bow on the James S. McDonnell Planetarium signals the beginning of the holiday season. Now we are offering our own lighting display in the GROW outdoor gallery, which features tens of thousands of lights utilizing the latest lighting technology. We invite you to bring your family and friends to the Science Center to see the holidays in a new light and take part in this new tradition. We are gearing up for a busy 2019 featuring two special exhibitions, new OMNIMAX® films, as well as updates to the OMNIMAX Theater and to several galleries. In January, we will open an exciting traveling exhibition from the National GUITAR Museum called GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked The World. This immersive exhibition explores the evolution, history and cultural impact of the instrument over the past 5,000 years. Following GUITAR we will open Pompeii: The Exhibition. Join us and discover Pompeii, an ancient Roman city preserved by the very disaster that destroyed it. This year’s OMNIMAX films include Cuba: Journey to the Heart of the Caribbean, Superpower Dogs and Volcanoes. The Science Center has engaged a national executive search firm to lead the pursuit for our next chief executive officer. In the meantime, I am honored to be serving as the Interim CEO, and am proud of our team’s seamless operation through this transition. We truly appreciate your support and wish you a happy and healthy 2019.
Sincerely,
Barbara Boyle Interim President and CEO, Chief Operating and Financial Officer

Celebrating 20 years! For two decades, the Science Center’s nationallyrecognized Youth Exploring Science (YES) program has been an integral part of the Science Center’s mission to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning. “We are proud of our legacy of success, the academic growth of our teens and the truly inspiring professional achievements of our alumni,” says Siinya Williams, senior director of the YES program. Thanks to the founding director, Diane Miller, the YES program has a strong foundation that reaches well beyond its base at the Taylor Community Science Resource Center, just blocks from the Science Center. Miller enlisted support of community partners to gather ideas for the goals for YES and act as the resource for nominating teens to the program. “The community partners’ input was essential to forming the YES goal to prepare the youth for the jobs of the future,” says Williams. “The goal set the tone for the informal approach to project-based learning that would become the cornerstone of the program and key to our long-term success.” The community partner framework now includes over 60 partnerships that continue to provide support, collaboration and resources. Today the YES program features a full-range of STEAM component choices for experiential learning. “From operating flight simulators and flying drones in the aerospace component to building computers and troubleshooting IT issues as helpdesk professionals in the cyber security component, each component offers hands-on STEAM experiences and professional interactions that prepare the teens with real-world skills for their next steps toward career success,” says Williams. In honor of the milestone, the YES program received a Mayoral Proclamation from the City of St. Louis and celebrated with a YES gala and alumni events. “We look forward to continuing to be a leader in STEAM education by preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers and problem-solvers for the jobs of the future— the jobs that have not even been imagined yet,” says Williams.
