Anniversary Celebration Saturday, November 7, 2020
In 2020, Saint Martin’s University celebrates 125 years as an institution of higher learning, committed to empowering students to make a positive difference in their lives and in the lives of others. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, we’re sharing this 125th Anniversary Celebration publication as a keepsake of Saint Martin’s memories. The Saint Martin’s community developed four core themes: Faith, Reason, Service and Community. These themes support and manifest essential elements of our mission and collectively encompass our mission and vision. Many of our significant historical events are highlighted in this publication and categorized under one of the four themes. www.stmartin.edu/125event #saintmartins125

Faith It was faith that led Abbot Bernard Locnikar, O.S.B., of Minnesota’s Saint John’s Abbey, to send monks west to start a new Catholic Benedictine school in 1893. Saint Martin’s first opened its doors on Sept. 11, 1895, for a single student, Angus McDonald. He was rumored to have traveled by canoe from Shelton, WA, approximately 25 miles away. In the Catholic and Benedictine tradition, FAITH in God, whether explicit or implicit, seeks understanding, guides the human person’s pursuit of truth, and grounds a person’s lifelong commitments.
The Abbey Church was built in 1970.
Reason In the year 1900, college-level courses were added to Saint Martin’s initial high school offerings. Saint Martin’s became a four-year, accredited, baccalaureategranting institution in 1938. By 1940, the first college graduates received degrees. The University now offers 29 academic majors, 60 educational programs and 12 graduate programs, including its first doctorate program in leadership studies. Through exercising REASON, we come to know ourselves, the world and God. The primary purpose of education is the cultivation of reason to inspire self-growth and lead students to recognize their responsibility to care for all of creation.

Service What Saint Martin’s is today was made possible, largely, by the service and support of our community. Starting with the founding Benedictine monks in 1893 to today’s day and age where we have constructed several new academic buildings, Saint Martin’s is able to educate the next generation because of the support of alumni, families and friends of the University. SERVICE is the response to the moral obligation to build a more humane and just society. When we engage in service, we acknowledge the dignity of the human person in others; commit to listening deeply and learning in solidarity; and choose consciously to exist for something beyond ourselves. 1926—The Mother’s Club raises the funds and the Grand Staircase is completed
1918—The eight-foot memorial statue of the Sacred Heard of Jesus in front of Old Main is donated by the men participating in Saint Martin’s first Laymen’s Retreat.

1980 to 1984—Dr. John Ishii serves as president of the University, becoming the first layperson to lead the Benedictine college in the school’s 85-year history.
Community Over the last 125 years, our student body has expanded in so many ways. Today, 1,300 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students, from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences, are pursuing their educational dreams in the arts and sciences, in business, in education and in engineering fields. Thirty-four percent of our students are among the first in their family to attend college. Forty-seventy percent identify as being ethnically diverse. One in four have a military affiliation. Today, our Saint Martin’s family includes monks, faculty, staff, alumni and friends from all over the world, all committed to helping our students transform and learn how to make a positive difference in their lives and in the lives of others around them.
1965—Saint Martin’s College enrolls women for the first time.
In COMMUNITY we recognize our interconnectedness and explore a deeper understanding of ourselves and humanity. Through an inclusive, equitable community, where all individuals are distinctive and all faiths, backgrounds, and talents are respected, we cultivate empathy and promote the exchange of ideas. This provides a valuable foundation for life, preparing students to serve the larger world.
1998-1999—Saints Athletics plays its first season in NCAA Division II.

A Tribute to Gala Since 2007, the Saint Martin’s Gala, the University’s major fundraising event, has raised critical funds for student scholarships. Generations of students have been able to come to Saint Martin’s thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents and friends. Held in early November, the black-tie event features a celebrity chef and auction, welcomes 600 guests to campus, and engages hundreds of student volunteers.
The Saint Martin’s Gala returns with a French theme next fall, Nov. 6, 2021, with world-renowned restaurateur and television personality Jacques -Pépin and his daughter Claudine. Visit stmartin.edu/gala for more information.
