Carla Hall first won over audiences when she competed on Bravo’s “Top Chef.” She later became best known as a co-host on ABC’s award-winning “The CHEW.” Born in Nashville, Carla graduated from Howard University’s Business School and worked as an accountant before switching careers to become a runway model. Traveling through Europe, she found her true passion was food. She trained as a chef, working in several restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. Carla believes food connects us. She strives to communicate this through her work, her cooking and in her interactions with all. 4 | stmartin.edu/gala
the menu This year’s menu features vibrant colors, flavors that sing lots of soul. This is a Gala dinner like no other. From smashed beets with mint to black-eyed pea salad and bitter greens to Sea Island shrimp and grits and slow braised pork ribs, Carla Hall pulls from her Southern roots to create a menu that is a fresh and wonderful blend of the modern and the traditional. Get ready to savor a five-course meal of amazing, lip-smacking goodness from start to finish.
Saints Sourced Ingredients for this year’s Gala menu include produce from Our Common Home Farms, a collaboration between Saint Martin’s, Pope John Paul II High School, Sacred Heart Church, the O’Neill Farm, Parsons Family Farm, and Community Kitchen. Through this partnership, Saint Martin’s students, faculty and staff volunteer to help grow nutrient-rich food while learning about sustainable agriculture and climate change resiliency. Last year the project donated over 4,000 pounds of produce to those who needed it the most in our community.

about chef matt Matt Alspaugh’s first restaurant job was rolling silverware at a café in Big Sur when he was 12 years old. During his teenage years, he went from washing dishes in a local restaurant in Michigan to working as a server and a cook. In 2004, he moved to Seattle and got a job working produce in Pike Place Market. From there he became a butcher’s assistant and later executive chef at Place Pigalle Restaurant. Matt has been with Bon Appétit for five years and with Saint Martin’s since 2017.
