WE THE SENIOR CLASS PRESENT -

THE 1962 SAMAHI

SAINT MARTIN'S HIGH SCHOOL OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON

Our high school days here at St. Martin's are filled with cherished memories. Some you remember beter than others, such as that important game you wanted so much to win, your first school dance, the class parties and picnics, the thrill of being a senior, and at last the wonderful feeling of accomplishment when that coveted diploma is placed in your hand.

FOREWORD

In this 1962 SAM AHI we have tried to preserve for you through pictures those wonderful memories of St. Martin's High.

FACULTY PAGE - 3

In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many laughs, sorrows, and dreams of '6 2 we shall be content, knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do.

ABBOT - CHANCELLOR: There is no doubt in our minds that most of you have gained much from the school year which you have just completed at St. Martin's. Some may have experienced real intellectual growth. Others have learned now to be genuinely serious about studies. Perhaps some have come to realize, more than ever before, what it means to live a full Catholic life on a Benedictine campus. Whatever it may be that each of you feels has been most profitable , we are confiden t that you have grown physically , intellectually, and spiritually in the direction of full maturity as a Christian gentleman. May God keep you in that direction always.

UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE BENEDICTINE FATHERS BOYS ARE TAUGHT TO LIVE AS GOOD CHRISTIAN MEN

TO STRIVE TO ATTAIN ETERNAL HAPPINESS

PRINCIPAL: We trust that every boy who has attended our school this year can really say that as a result of this experience he has become more a man. It is our sincere hope that we have helped in a very real way to prepare each one of you morally, mentally and physically for genuine Christian living.

IN

DEDICATION

We, the Class of 1962, proudly dedicate our "SAMAHI" to Mr. Kenneth Stevens , for whom we hold such high regard, both as a music ins tru ctor and a friend . Song is the vehic le of happy expression. A man who can sing or play a musical instrument is never a lonely man and his troubles are few. Thank you , Mr. Stevens , for teaching us the arc of happy expression. May you continue to lead our Ranger band and direc t our Glee club with assuring musical knowledge and inspiration.

THE RANGER COACHING STAFF Coach Bernie Harvey, Athletic Director, . Freshman football and basketball and Head baseball coach. In the past two years, his football squad has lost only one game and have done very well in basketball. His baseball squad was edged in the district playoff and produced some very excellent players. His effort to help the morale of the school has been rewarded. This year , more than any other year, the school has been backing the reams more than ever. To you, Coach Harvey, we owe a lot which we can never pay. We wish you to have many more prosperous years here at Rangerville .

TH IS COACHING STAFF HAS SUPPLIED EVERYTHING EXCEPT "G ITS!" Coach Monty Walker, Head football, basketball and track coach . Since his coming to St. Martin's, he has produced fine ballplayers and excel lent teams . His reams have produced many surprises and upsets. Coach Walker feels that sportmanship comes before anything else. You always find that the players are always well dressed and act like the ream they are. We offer to you, Coach Walker, our help, so that we may make ourselves and our school a better place for one and all.

THEY ARÂŁ PROUD TO BE CALLED "RANGERS." Coach Dale Behles, Assistant football and basketball coach. His coming to St. Martin's proved to be a real asset. Not only has he done his fair share as coach, bur also as a reacher. Every day in study hall you can see him take a fast check of absentees and then start the paper work. By doing this he has come up with some fine offensive and defensive plays. Many of these plays have presented a real problem to many of the teams in the league. Each and everyone of us wish you many more glorious years here at good ole S. M.

Whatever Is Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well.

DO OR DIE ! "

Although this season wasn't as successfu l as las t years, the te am finished the season with a respec table 3 win 6 loss record. Ev e n when the going got tough the spirit never le t down, with this kind of attitude you c an't keep a good te am down very long , as was displayed in our last few games. Much of the credit goes to our senior lettermen who played their last game in a Ran g e r uniform. To the underclassmen let te rw inners is left the-task of building for the fu tur e may the Ranger Spirit carry them to Victory I !

THESE ARE THE RANGERS, THE MIGHTY, MIGHTY RANGERS!

Baby Hugh, bruising senior fullback, helped carry the Rangers through his third football campaign. He has been a standout thru fair and foul. His absence will be felt in the coming years. Which major football co llege ream will be lucky enough to get him--Notre Dame ?

Ken "Moose" Hordyk, a rugged Sophomore halfback. His presents in future years will lighten the load left by graduation Seniors .

Rangers prepare

ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL!

Ed Dr um is another Senior whose absence on the football team will be felt. Although he is sma ll, he is very potent for his size. He has done much to bolster the range r line in the past two years.

L

Scot McClain, has been an asset to the de fensiv e unit in the past two years.

Marv Kopp, sen ior center. He rook over last year and learned the job the hard way. He has proved that he has learned his job very wel l.

This is "Mr. Bas ketball. " Joe is the playmaker who works hard to make the team click. It will be difficult to find someone next year to fi ll his shoes. Abili ty is important, but its the DESIRE - the will to overcome the meanest of obstacles that makes the difference. Joe has these qualities to the highest degree. This is the kind of STUFF RANGERS are made of!!! Joe Furness, Guard

FREEDOM OF SPEECH OUR NOBLEST RIGHT

Above : To the winners belong the spoils. Our Ranger Debaters have brought more honor and pride to our school than any other group. We salute them - our ambassadors of good will, our voices of Democracy. No benefactor is equal to him who peoples life with new and lofty ideas. Mike Hansen - Frosh Orator
