DEDICATION In keeping with the current trend of building on the St. Martin's campus, we dedicate the SAMARCO of 1960 to the education department. The education department is the fastest growing field in the college, with a total of 45 education majors enrolled this year. When Abbot Lambert Burton, a prominent Benedictine educator from St. Benedict's in Atchison, Kansas, became Abbot in 1928, it was hoped to make St. Martin's a fully accredited college and to institute an education department. St. Martin's attained senior college standards in 1938, and in 1940 the first class was graduated. After that, severa I requests were made for the approval of an education department. It wasn't until 1957, with the help of Lloyd J. Andrews, superintendent of public instruction, that the state board of education approved the application of St. Marlin's College to ini liate in the fall of 1957 a program of teacher education for the freshman and sophomore years. Extension and evening offerings in teacher education were also app roved by the board. The junior year of the teacher education program was approved in June, 1958, and added in the fall of 1959. In June, 1959, the state board of education approved the College's plans to add the sen1or year of teacher education in the fall of 1959 and to initiate fifth year courses in the summer of 1960.

..

With this remarkable growth in the last three years, it is fitting to dedicate this 1960 SAMARCO to the ever-growing Education Department.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The education which young men receive at St. Martin's College is firmly fixed in the Benedictine tradition. A student is considered a member of the St. Martin's family for as long as he is with us, and strong ties continue after the student has become an alumnus. The spirit at St. Martin's is, therefr,re, primarily that of a large Christian family with a highly developed sense of responsibility felt by the Fathers that their "adopted sons" should achieve the full maturity of Christian manhood. By example and by consisten t encouragement the Benedictines seek to lead their students again and again to the Mass and to the Sacraments as the source of all grace. Within this Christian atmosphere, studies are taken seriously. A young man who chooses to pursue his college education at St. Martin's is expected to give his ,very best efforts to draw all he possibly can from his course of instruction here. Individual assistance is given whenever it is seriously requested; the fathers take a very strong interest in the intellectual and the moral progress of their students. Such, then, is the light lit upon this "hilltop," and may many future generations of young men continue to find here their inspiration to seek the very highest things in this life and to prepare for the fullness of the life Hereafter.

,
