Service and Sustainability Our Benedictine values honor the importance of each person and the significance of service and community. Saints take pride in helping those in need and caring for the earth through service projects and activities. Students work individually or together in groups.
Service • Each summer, a group of students volunteers in a Tanzanian orphanage for two weeks. • Students help kids at the local Boys and Girls Clubs do homework, practice reading, learn sports and create art. • In an alternate spring break experience, students assist migrant farm workers in the Yakima Valley of Eastern Washington. • Students pitch in regularly at a local soup kitchen, and on service immersion trips to Portland, OR., to help the city’s homeless.
Sustainability • Students, staff, and faculty members learn sustainable gardening techniques during workships in our SMU Learning Garden. • Our Sustainability Club throws an annual event, “Garbageology,” to raise awareness about how much trash is thrown away on campus and create recycling opportunities! • We have a special learning community, Oikos (that’s Greek for “home”), that focuses on sustainability. One Oikos project? Helping the campus save more than 100,000 water bottles since installing 19 hydration stations. • Graduate students assisted in designing and constructing Cebula Hall, our engineering building and one of the highest Platinum LEED-rated buildings in the world.

Our monks in black The St. Martin’s Abbey monks are actively involved with the campus community.
What makes Saint Martin’s University so special? The answer is simple—our monks. For over 120 years, our Catholic, Benedictine monks have called Saint Martin’s home. It is their support (and sense of humor) that makes community the number one thing students talk about when describing Saint Martin’s.

1
In 2009 several Saint Martin’s students and faculty teamed up to write a book about the Monks of Saint Martin’s. Pick up a copy of "One Rule, Many Men," in our bookstore when you visit campus.
2
Besides gathering to pray five times a day in the Abbey Church, Saint Martin’s monks work as professors, mailmen, archivists, Campus ministers and guest-masters.
3
Some monks have been ordained as priests so they can help with pastoral duties and giving the sacraments, and they bear the title “Father,” while others who follow other paths of service and are called “Brother.”
