August 22nd - The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The tradition of the Queenship of Mary is found in Holy Scripture. The mother of a king is highly honored and respected in many Old Testament stories. The Angel Gabriel proclaimed to Mary at the Annunciation that her child would inherit the throne of King David, and rule forever. When visiting her cousin Elizabeth soon after, Mary is called the “mother of my Lord.” Our Lady shares in the kingship of her Son, Jesus. The “Hail, Holy Queen” (“Salve Regina”) prayer dates to the 11th century.

This feast was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1954, as a follow-up to the feast of Mary’s Assumption. The pope stated that as “Queen of Heaven,” Mary deserves the title as the Mother of God, her intercession to God, and her close association with Jesus’s work for the redemption of souls.

“May the Virgin Mary, crowned Queen, intercede for us… that we may imitate her in faithfully fulfilling God’s will on earth, to join her one day in the heavenly Jerusalem. In every situation of our life, let us invoke her with trust: ‘Queen of all saints, pray for us!’ ” - Pope St. John Paul II
