Reaching New Heights: An Introduction to the Strategic Plan

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

This is such an important moment for our school Following the unprecedented disruption to the educational calendar these past two years, it is wonderful to see the campus alive with the vibrance of a full schedule of educational opportunities and activities It is time to look forward now, and to maximize the school’s potential for all members of our community

Over the past two months the Board of Trustees, in collaboration with members of the school’s leadership team, have completed a detailed and thoughtful strategic planning process to serve as a roadmap for the coming two years Having sought feedback from faculty, staff, students, parents, alumnae, and friends, in the hopes of understanding the many strengths and challenges facing Saint Mary’s School, we are delighted to be able to present these short-term strategic goals

A community dedicated to academic excellence and personal achievement in preparing young women for college and life remains Saint Mary’s mission And it’s our mission that is the cornerstone of this strategic plan The goals listed will leverage our strengths and successes and further position us to make bold and courageous choices that will further strengthen the work we do in support of our mission

The plan challenges us to take our approach to education, administration, and leadership to new heights It commits to honor the talented community of students that we serve and lays a foundation for a truly exciting future Overseeing the implementation of the strategic plan and outcomes that are impactful will be a top priority of the board and the school’s leadership

PURPOSE OF PROJECT

The following short-term strategic plan is designed to transparently define the school’s vision for the next two years, and to identify our goals and objectives and the tactical approach that will lead to its realization This document has been created following collaborative and inclusive planning sessions held between the Board of Trustees and the school’s leadership team and is based on extensive feedback received from all constituent groups of our school community

This plan serves as a directional guide and outlines how the priorities, focus, energy, and resources of all employees and other stakeholders will be shaped It speaks to a series of common goals and establishes our intended outcomes With disciplined effort and focused and conscious decision making, we are confident that, using this plan as a foundation, we can accomplish great progress over the coming 24 months, placing the school in a strong position to reach new heights of performance and success

As with everything that we do at Saint Mary’s, this plan is centered around a steadfast commitment to our Episcopal values and the rich tradition and heritage that have served the school so very well for the past 181 years The plan articulates the actions required of all those blessed with the responsibility of ensuring that the school continues to thrive and that each of our students maximizes their own potential

MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Celebrating Saint Mary’s traditions and Episcopal Heritage

The first chill of winter air has arrived on campus as I write this, signaling a change from the beauty of the colors of the fall foliage to the majesty of the lights of Smedes as the dark evenings draw in earlier in the day Either way, the campus is stunning to behold and remains busy with activity of the girls maximizing the variety of opportunities available to them

It has been such a pleasure to witness for the first time, the abundance of enthusiasm and positive spirit throughout the campus as we have enjoyed a full and vibrant semester of scholarship Classrooms have been alive with energetic, student-centered learning, where girls, expertly guided by our dedicated faculty, collaborate to benefit from the collective intelligence of their peers

Alongside these meaningful educational experiences, the fall semester has been punctuated with an abundance of extra-curricular activities From the five varsity sports offered and the Chorale program, to the fall play and Orchesis performances, students have shared an impressive array of commitment and natural talent In addition, girls have been excited to enjoy a comprehensive residential life program with an immensely successful lineup of social events including the Sigma Mu Field Day, the annual Haunted House, Truckin’ in the Grove, Silent Disco, Fall Ball, and an endless list of local cultural events

Most important of all, the fall has allowed the school to celebrate the Episcopal heritage and traditions than mean so much to the entire school community Meaningful Chapel services remain the nucleus of the campus life from our monthly Eucharist celebrations to the special occasions of All Saints’ Day and Veterans Day Founders Day,

Granddaughters Club and National Honors Society inductions, and the Junior Ring Ceremony events have further enhanced our commitment to honoring the historical rituals that serve as an important reminder of the continued allegiance to our mission They highlight the importance and relevance of our cultural heritage where common values, customs, and cultural traditions can be shared strengthening the tenets that connect our entire school community

As you can see, life at Saint Mary’s School is thriving And the coming months have us all looking forward to the Lighting O’ the Grove, the Christmas Party, and finishing the academic semester strongly

The development of such a dynamic and comprehensive educational experience does not happen by accident It comes as a direct result of the combined efforts and hard work of so many To all, alumnae, faculty, parents, staff, and students who have worked diligently to make our school such a wonderful place to work every day, I remain deeply thankful

Launched in 2018, the Saint Mary’s Forever Campaign has been called the most ambitious effort of its kind ever undertaken at Saint Mary’s However, if we look back into our 181-year history, we know that there have been many milestone moments that once seemed unattainable, ambitious, and bold Martha Stoops reminds us in The Heritage that with every passing year, success looks different As we have reached record enrollment in our 25th year as all-high school, we glance back to July of 1846 when we celebrated “a full house” and, by 1854, reported “the happiest 90 young ladies we ever saw ”

And now, we are looking ahead Borrowing a metaphor from track-andfield, we intend to sprint through the tape and keep going There is no finish line

There is a disarming charm about progress When we meet important milestones, we also see more opportunity In 2002, one of the many projects the Saint Mary’s feasibility study and master plan called for was the renovation and expansion of Eliza Battle Pittman Auditorium Today, we know experiences and projects that once seemed unattainable are now within our grasp

How is this progress being accomplished? Simply put: YOU! We know our alumnae, families, and friends have and will continue to contribute in ways we have yet to fully realize As our campaign chair often quotes, “This campaign is our potential realized ” Just as we see potential daily in our students, the Saint Mary’s Forever Campaign is the catalyst for the effort invested

The Forever Campaign is not just about raising funds for the future It is also about the many ways your giving impacts each area of our school Enrollment is the highest in 25 years Smedes Hall is full with an amazing senior class of boarding students, and Cruikshank and Penick with underclasswomen Our summer camps were fully open and thriving this summer Our school is in a position of strength, thanks to the people who support Saint Mary’s in so many ways

Progress is also about the dedication of people, and we have amazing Saints leading us towards our goals We just appointed two longtime, dedicated employees into leadership roles: Emily Smith ’01 as our director of alumnae leadership and Katie Bradbury Wellman as director of enrollment and financial aid We have welcomed several new world-class educators to our already outstanding faculty and staff this year

Throughout this issue of our magazine, you will read about the seen and unseen ways your gifts are making an impact We know you will be inspired to ask yourself, “What can I do?” Saint Mary’s Saints have a passion for their alma mater that is fierce, rare, and contagious It is exciting and humbling to have the support of incredibly generous donors

The sights and sounds of Pomp and Circumstance filled the Grove Sunday morning, May 22, 2022, as 69 seniors graduated from Saint Mary’s School It was a glorious Saint Mary’s commencement day in the Grove, as the graduates turned their tassels and Saint Mary’s rings It was a blue-ribbon day for the Class of 2022 and their families

In keeping with Saint Mary’s tradition, Student Government Association President Tommi Wilder ’22 and Senior Class President Coco Jones ’22 marched at the head of the line of seniors The new marshals led the two lines of graduates and the platform party from Smedes Hall through the Grove

As the graduates made their way to the center brick walkway for the official procession through The Grove, underclasswomen presented each graduate with an iris to carry and place in the Class of 1987 urn just before stepping onstage to receive her diploma

The blue iris has long been an iconic symbol of Saint Mary’s rich commencement tradition Graduates have carried the irises in our commencement procession for many decades Irises bloom each spring all around campus, most notably, in the Class of 1904 sundial garden in front of East Rock The blue iris is a symbol of faith, hope, and wisdom, which makes it a perfect representation of all that a Saint Mary’s commencement embodies – the faith a student has nurtured in her four years in Chapel and in our community; the hopes and dreams of a graduate on commencement day; and the wisdom gained through a Saint Mary’s education Through the years, the iris tradition has evolved and grown into a most beloved part of a Saint Mary’s commencement The High School Class of 1987 gave the brass urn still used today, as the marshals collect the irises from graduates

as they step up to the stage to receive their diplomas In 2007, the tradition began of underclasswomen giving an iris to a graduating senior just prior to the commencement procession through the Grove Today, Saint Mary’s iris tradition is stronger than ever, a beautiful symbol of a Saint Mary’s School commencement day

Valedictorian Annabel Semans ’22, delivered the valedictory address Sofia Cimballa ’22, delivered the senior commencement address, having been elected by her classmates as the senior commencement speaker

Emmy-award winning veteran NBC news producer Susan LaSalla delivered the commencement address

Following the speeches, the awards portion of the ceremony was presented, introduced by Board of Trustees Chair Liza Roberts Awards were presented by Ms Roberts and Head of School Carol Killebrew

The Honors Chorale, under the direction of Jennifer Moran, and accompanied by Dr Karen Allred, offered special music, No Time, arranged by Susan Brumfield

Following the final singing of the year of the School Hymn, Chief Marshal Chloe Pigues ’23 stood at the top of the steps of Smedes Hall, directly beneath the lantern adorned with Saint Mary’s blue ribbons, to drop the handkerchief and declare the 180th session at Saint Mary’s to be officially closed After the traditional handkerchief drop, the marshals walked into Smedes and closed the doors on another Saint Mary’s commencement, while the graduates joyfully tossed their caps high into the canopy of stately oaks

By all accounts, Saint Mary’s commencement embodies personal touches of academic excellence, personal achievement, friendship, tradition, grace, honor, dignity, and courage that are hallmarks of the Saint Mary’s experience

Once again, Saint Mary’s graduating class boasts 100 percent college acceptance to a broad range of outstanding colleges and universities around the nation and abroad The range of colleges and universities Saint Mary's Class of 2022 have selected are as varied as the graduates themselves and reflects their wide-ranging interests Students will be attending colleges and universities across the nation and abroad as well as undertaking gap years

“Members of the Saint Mary’s School Class of 2022 are poised to step out of our gates and into an exciting future,” says Head of School Carol Killebrew “Prepared at Saint Mary’s for college and life, these graduates have challenged themselves in and out of the classroom, expanded their boundaries, made real-world connections, and grown as young women of intelligence, integrity, and purpose – ready to serve and shape their world ”

Annabel Semans ’22 of Durham, North Carolina, received the 2022 Cooper Medal, in recognition of achieving the highest G P A for the year The Cooper Medal was established in 1944 by Fannie Cooper Gilliam ’44C in memory of her brother, Hill Parham Cooper Annabel also received the 2022 Niles Medal for finishing with the highest G P A over her years at Saint Mary’s The Niles Medal was instituted in 1905 by Dr Charles Martin Niles

Wells Harned ’22 of Bowling Green, Kentucky, received the Catherine Ruth Proctor Award, presented by the Saint Mary’s chapter of the National Honor Society in recognition of the student making the greatest scholastic advancement over the past four years The Proctor Award was established in 1974 in memory of Catherine Ruth Proctor ’75HS

Jaimmy Warren ’22 of Wallace, North Carolina, was the recipient of the 2022 Georgia Lee Kinsey Award, presented by Saint Mary’s Chapter of the National Honor Society to the graduate who has accomplished the greatest scholastic advancement over the past two years The award was established in 1982 by Saint Mary’s College Chi Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa in memory of Georgia Lee Kinsey ’81

Jennie Ho '22 of Cary, North Carolina, was chosen to receive the King Medal, awarded each year to the graduate, who, in the opinion of the faculty, has most consistently practiced good citizenship at Saint Mary’s and inconspicuously served as an example to others The King Medal was established in 1964 by Mr and Mrs Madding King of Florence, Alabama

Jane Usher ’22 of Newton Grove, North Carolina, was voted by her classmates to receive the Margaret and Ann Highsmith Medal, awarded to a graduate who exemplifies the Christian idea of helpfulness to others motivated by her genuine love for all members of the school community The Highsmith Medal was established in 1969 by Mr and Mrs Seavy Highsmith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, in honor of their daughters, Ann Cameron Highsmith ’70HS and Margaret Highsmith Dickson ’67HS

Keithia Robinson of St Petersburg, Florida is the 2022 Marian Drane Graham Award winner, as chosen by a committee of alumnae, students, and faculty This award was established in 1968 by Dr Frank Porter Graham as a memorial to his wife, Marian Drane Graham, Class of 1919 The award is made each year to a graduate who, in the words of Dr Graham, exemplifies Marian’s “reverence and humility of spirit, scholarship without pride of excellence, zest for life, faith and fortitude, and all-around development in the course of her radiant and nobly useful life ”

Saint Mary’s Alumnae College Presidents

Saint Mary’s alumnae have proven to be dynamic and successful leaders in a variety of fields, including education, with a legacy of leading educational institutions since the 1800s In this feature, we highlight four Saint Mary’s alumnae who became college presidents and strong advocates for the education of girls and women, from the 1800s into the 21st century

Emilie Watts McVea, Class of 1884

President, Sweet Briar College

Nationally recognized educator and women’s rights advocate: 1867-1928

An outstanding scholar as a student at Saint Mary’s in the 1880s, Emilie Watts McVea went on to become a nationally recognized educator, ultimately serving as the second president of Sweet Briar College

McVea was born in Clinton, Louisiana, the daughter of Judge Charles and Emilie Rose Watts McVea After Judge McVea’s death, Mrs McVea moved with her young daughters to Raleigh to be near her sister, Mrs John Esten Cooke Smedes, wife of the second president of St Augustine’s College, and sister-in-law of Saint Mary’s founder, the Rev Dr Aldert Smedes Young Emilie McVea was educated at Saint Mary’s School, where her record was excellent She remained active in Saint Mary’s alumnae affairs and in the Episcopal Church throughout her life

In 1886, McVea returned to Saint Mary’s to teach and became lady principal in 1989 She worked with the Rev Dr Bennett Smedes, the second rector of Saint Mary’s, to enrich the curriculum She was, according to her students, an inspiring teacher who made her classes in literature and history “an unforgettable experience…an introduction to life ”

After the death of Bennett Smedes in 1899, Miss McVea supervised the school until the new rector, the Rev Theodore DuBose Bratton, was appointed McVea then began long-planned advanced studies at George Washington University, where she received an A B degree in 1902 and an A M degree the next year

Mrs McVea taught English literature briefly at the University of Tennessee, where she was active in extension work with public school teachers She became assistant professor of English literature at the University of Cincinnati, where she was elected dean of the women’s department in

1909 Her career at the University of Cincinnati was distinguished and her contributions to the life of the city were considerable When she left Ohio in 1916, she was honored at a civic reception with tributes from leaders of almost every reform movement of the time She worked and lectured on behalf of many causes – child labor laws, better secondary schools, more competent teachers in women’s colleges, the parity of men and women in university posts and, above all, the rights of women to equal education, equal job opportunities, and suffrage

Mrs McVea was a co-founder of the Southern Association of College Women, chaired the education committee of the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs in 1916, led the Cincinnati Woman's Club, and was active in the women's suffrage movement and the YWCA During World War I, she toured as a lecturer supporting the YMCA and wartime food programs She wrote biographical articles for the Encyclopedia Americana (1920), and two monographs, Equal Franchise in Ohio and Suggestions for Teaching Literature in the Grades

Mrs McVea became the second president of Sweet Briar College from 1916-1925 She believed that the times demanded rigorous training of women and that women should attack the root causes of social and economic problems She continued her interest in local and national affairs, lecturing widely on education and, during World War I, for the Federal Food Administration In recognition of her contributions, she received the honorary Litt D degree from the University of Cincinnati and an honorary LL D degree from the University of North Carolina In 1922, she was appointed to a four-year term on the board of visitors of the University of Virginia, the first woman member of that body

When she retired in 1925, Dr McVea was made president emerita of Sweet Briar College By then, she was nationally recognized for more than 40 years of service to the cause of women’s education

Dr McVea died in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1928, aged 61 years  Her grave is in Raleigh's Historic Oakwood Cemetery  Sweet Briar College honors the highest-ranking student in each class as an Emilie Watts McVea Scholar

‘A Great Lady’ First female president of Saint Mary’s

Saint Mary’s alumnae rejoiced when Margaret Mordecai Jones Cruikshank returned to Saint Mary’s in 1932 to lead the school through tough times back to its full glory Cruikshank courageously took the helm of leadership at her alma mater in 1932 when both the school and the nation were in financial crisis With the country in the midst of the Great Depression, enrollment at Saint Mary’s had declined to unsustainable numbers, and the school faced a dangerous budget deficit She served as president of Saint Mary’s from 1932-1946

“Margaret Jones Cruikshank, one of the institution’s most devoted daughters, went to Saint Mary’s to head the school with the full knowledge that she was to take charge of a school in crisis,” writes Martha Stoops, professor emerita of history and author of The Heritage: The Education of Women at St. Mary’s College, 1842-1982.

When Cruikshank accepted the call from the Board of Trustees, Saint Mary’s had a projected enrollment of 125 and a deeply slashed budget Under her leadership, by the 1935-1936 school year, enrollment topped

200, and climbed to 290 two years later, with a full capacity of 220 boarding students Enrollment held at capacity, with a long waiting list of girls “clamoring to get in ” By the time she retired at age 67 and because of her “most careful management,” alumnae giving had increased noticeably; the debt was paid off; and the school’s finances were under control

Cruikshank’s road to the presidency of Saint Mary’s was an interesting journey After both of her parents had died, Margaret Mordecai Jones came to Saint Mary’s from Hillsborough, N C , at the age of 17 with her fraternal twin sister, Mary Pride Jones, in 1893 She returned to teach mathematics at her alma mater She studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earned a B S from Columbia University, and a master’s degree from Duke She taught at Saint Mary’s until her husband, Saint Mary’s Business Manager Ernest Cruikshank, became president of Columbia Institute in Tennessee in 1921 He died the following year, and she succeeded him as president She held that position until 1932, when she returned to lead Saint Mary’s

Cruikshank achieved many firsts at Saint Mary’s She was the first woman to lead the school; the first, and only, alumna to lead the school, and the first leader of the school to be called president

In addition to her role as president, she took on the roles of academic dean and dean of students, and handled it all brilliantly, while also raising three children She was determined to maintain the high standards at Saint Mary’s as enrollment recovered and hired the best teachers possible She personified resilience, both in her own life and in the institution she led

SGA constitution in 1938 She created the Order of the Circle honorary leadership society in 1938 to strengthen morale among the student body She broadened and strengthened the curriculum and the faculty She oversaw renovations and improvements to Smedes Hall and the science building and its equipment

Cruikshank Hall, a three-story dormitory built in 1966 and named in honor of Margaret Cruikshank, stands today as a symbol of this “great lady,” as her successor, Saint Mary’s eighth president, Richard Stone, called her

Virginia McSwain Carson ’67C, Ph.D. President, South Georgia College

Dr Virginia McSwain Carson ’67C became the seventh president of South Georgia College (SGSC) on February 1, 2009, after serving as interim president of the college Dr Carson retired from SGSC after leading the institution for eight years

She was highly respected by students, alumnae, and faculty, alike

“Somehow, everything fell into place under her,” writes Martha Stoops in The Heritage “Everyone accepted her decisions, because they knew her devotion was complete ”

Her legacy is long and strong at Saint Mary’s It was under her leadership that the Honor Code and student government reached maturity She structured the Student Government Association and approved the

Dr Carson successfully led the consolidation of South Georgia College and Waycross College into South Georgia State College and led it through a long-term strategy to foster student achievement

Upon announcing Dr Carson’s retirement, University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby said, “President Carson has been an instrumental leader for South Georgia State College Her steady leadership through such tremendous change has been critical to the successful consolidation and shaping of South Georgia State College ”

Dr Carson, a Macon, Georgia native, was vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Highlands College in Rome In a career that spanned nearly 47 years, she previously served as dean of academic services for Georgia Perimeter College’s (GPC) Clarkston, Georgia, campus from 2000 to 2001 Prior to this appointment, she served as chair of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, also on

Dr Carson spent the 1999-2000 academic year as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow at Northern Virginia Community College, in Annandale, Virginia In 2004, she was chosen to participate in a Fulbright International Education Seminar in Germany

Dr Carson is past president of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) She represented Georgia on the executive council of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission (SACS) on Colleges and served as state chair of the Georgia SACS commissioners She edited the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Review, a refereed mathematics journal, from 1998 to 2003

Mary Dana Hinton ’88HS, Ph.D. President, Hollins University

Mary Dana Hinton became the 13th president of Hollins University on August 1, 2020 An active and respected proponent of the liberal arts and inclusion, her leadership reflects a deep and abiding commitment to educational equity and the education of women

For six years Dr Hinton served as the president of the College of Saint Benedict (Saint Ben’s) in Saint Joseph, Minnesota, and was named President Emerita upon her departure Under her leadership, Saint Ben’s put into action a collaborative strategic plan and dynamic vision to guide the institution through 2020 During her tenure, the college completed a $100 million comprehensive fundraising campaign, exceeding its goal She also led the process to implement a $43 million campus facilities update, enabling Saint Ben’s to provide premier facilities for teaching, learning, and women’s leadership development

Dr Hinton is a member of the board of directors for the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Interfaith Youth Core, Saint Mary’s School, and The Teagle Foundation She is currently serving a three-year term as an at-large board member with the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and is the chair of the AAC&U She chairs the AAC&U Presidents’ Trust and is also a member of the Lumina Foundation’s Quality Credentials Task Force

She speaks frequently in the U S and abroad on topics related to the liberal arts and inclusion, and she founded the Liberal Arts Illuminated Conference Hinton teaches in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education doctoral program in higher education management and the CIC President’s Institute New President Program

Dr Hinton’s scholarship focuses on higher education leadership, strategic planning, the role of education in peace building, African American religious history, and inclusion in higher education She is the author of The Commercial Church: Black Churches and the New Religious Marketplace in America and a frequent op-ed contributor across higher education publications Her TEDx talk, Leading from the Margins, reflects the thesis of her next book

Dr Hinton earned a Ph D in religion and religious education with high honors from Fordham University, a Master of Arts degree in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Williams College She is the recipient of the Bicentennial Medal from Williams College and honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Misericordia University and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts

Credo, a comprehensive higher education consulting firm specializing in working with independent colleges and universities, named Dr Hinton as the recipient of its eighth annual Courageous Leadership Award in 2020 The award recognizes an innovative leader in independent higher education

Katie Bradbury Wellman has been named director of enrollment management and financial Aid at Saint Mary’s School, effective August 16, 2022

Wellman joined the admission office staff at Saint Mary’s in 2015, serving in various roles She served previously at Saint Mary’s as instructor of mathematics, director of student activities, dorm head, residential faculty member, assistant dean of students and director of student programs She was a past recipient of the Mabel M Morrison Teacher of the Year Award at Saint Mary’s From 2008-2010, she served as middle school dean of students at Saint Mark’s Episcopal School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida She was also a math teacher in the Wake County School System in North Carolina

She graduated cum laude from Salem College with a B S in mathematics and a minor in Chemistry and holds a master’s in education from Harvard University

Kudos to Saint Mary’s instructor of English Dr Laurel Young and math instructor Chris Hoskin on their work this summer as AP Readers Advanced Placement® (AP®) Readers evaluate and score AP students' free responses, ensuring that high school students receive AP grades that accurately reflect college-level achievement in a specified discipline

Each year in June, high school teachers and college faculty from around the world gather across the United States to participate in locations onsite, as well as to score online from home

Being an AP Reader is a professional honor, says Dr. Young.

“To be eligible, one must be AP course authorized and currently teaching, with at least two years of experience teaching the course Saint Mary's own Chris Hoskin has done it for six years, including this year This summer, I had the opportunity to be an AP Reader for the AP English Language & Composition Exam I traveled to Tampa, Florida, joining educators from all over the country

"The Tampa Convention Center is huge, but we used every room of it! We scored over half a million (!) essays from students all over the world I personally scored 1000+ essays, gaining many insights about the AP program to share with our students In the evenings, I enjoyed socializing with colleagues from all over the country, sharing tips and advice to make our AP Programs even better ”

Senior Kernissa Robinson ’23 earns College Board National Recognition

Congratulations to our own senior boarder Kernissa "Nissa" Robinson ’23 of the Commonwealth of Dominica Nissa is one of 62,000 students from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs! She earned this recognition for excelling in her classes and on College Board assessments More than 180,000 students were eligible to apply for the College Board National Recognition Programs, which grant students academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications Students eligible for this honor have a GPA of 3 5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams

Garden Club donates harvest to Plant-a-Row for the Hungry

Saint Mary's Garden Club planted, harvested, and donated 20 pounds of Romaine lettuce and bok choy to Logan’s Garden Shop's Plant-a-Row for the Hungry program this spring This was the largest donation from one organization that Logan’s received so far this year and will be enough for 35-40 families

Plant A Row for the Hungry (PAR) is a national program that focuses on reducing hunger by encouraging community and individual gardeners to plant an extra row in their gardens The produce from those extra rows/containers/beds are donated to local food collection systems (food banks, shelters, families in need) Logan’s introduced PAR to Raleigh in 2008 and partners with the Interfaith Food Shuttle to distribute the donations directly to local families in need Since 2008, Logan’s has collected over 350,000 pounds of fresh produce

Patricia Sasser named Assistant Head of School

Patricia Sasser is Saint Mary's School's new assistant head of school and residential faculty member effective July 2022 Ms Sasser served most recently as the head of the upper school at the Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, Florida She worked previously at the Loomis Chaffee School as a dean of students and was heavily involved in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion at the school Prior to Loomis Chaffee, Sasser worked at The Madeira School in several roles, including as a major gifts officer, director of student activities, special assistant to the head of school on diversity, and the assistant dean of students for residential life Before transitioning into education, Ms Sasser worked at ESPN as an associate producer, where she was a two-time Emmy® nominee and a 2006 Emmy® award winner

Originally from Washington, D C , as the daughter of a U S Foreign Service mom and Nigerian dad, Ms Sasser spent her elementary and middle school years living overseas in Nigeria, Haiti, and Niger She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and in African American Studies She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from The George Washington University

Jessica Campbell is the new dean of academic innovation and a residential faculty member at Saint Mary’s School Prior to Saint Mary's, Ms Campbell was the director of the Center for Global Studies at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Illinois, where she also taught English  Ms Campbell knew in high school she would pursue a career in education because she likes working with adolescents and wanted a job that would be different every day She most enjoys the opportunity to explain to her students that they will be the leaders of the future and have the power and responsibility to decide how to make this world a better place

Ms Campbell has previously served as the Academic Dean at Duchesne Academy of The Sacred Heart and as a social studies teacher and class moderator; a middle school Humanities teacher for Overseas Family School in Ontario, Canada; and as a high school English teacher for the Halton District School Board, also in Ontario, Canada She also volunteers with Travel to Teach and Malakai World Missions

Prior to teaching in the United States, Ms Campbell spent five years teaching in Singapore

Saint Mary’s School was honored to welcome North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green to campus Wednesday, April 20, 2022, for an all-school assembly in recognition of National Poetry Month A luncheon was held immediately afterwards in Smedes-Emory Parlor for the English Department, Black Student Union, Bookmark Club, and Creative Writing Club members and Inclusion Ambassadors, who sponsored this special event

Ms Green read some of her poetry to the students in assembly and offered the context for each one inspired by events and people and the oral history passed down to her in her family as well as her own life experiences “Your life’s work and your story find you,” she said She spoke about the power and responsibility of storytelling and truth telling and encouraged the students to “Be your own Muse

At the luncheon, Saint Mary's junior Destiny Ellington read one of her original poems Destiny and classmate Mahari Bennett also presented Ms Green with the first copy, hot off the press, of Saint Mary's new literary magazine/journal, The Epilogue.

’19 pursues dreams in musical theatre

Former star of Pittman stage wows Wilmington audiences in Grease; returns to University of Michigan for senior year

Stephanie Prestage ’19 of Clinton, North Carolina, wowed audiences this July at historic Thalian Hall in Wilmington, North Carolina, playing the iconic role of Sandy in Opera House Theatre Company’s blockbuster production of Grease Audiences packed Thalian Hall throughout the month of July to see Prestage, her co-star Mathis Turner as Danny, and a gifted cast of young actors and veterans light up the historic stage with dynamic song and dance

Prestage, a star of the Pittman Auditorium stage during her Saint Mary’s years, is a senior at the University of Michigan pursuing a B F A in musical theatre with a minor in performing arts management and entrepreneurship in the university’s department of musical theatre, which is renowned as one of the top musical theatre programs in the world At Michigan, she has worked backstage on shows to learn about all aspects of theater production and performed in Circle Mirror Transformation and Hair

As an arts student at Saint Mary’s, Prestage starred in the school’s productions of Bring It On, Legally Blonde, The Boyfriend, Women in White, Mean Girls, and Little Women She also worked on the costume crew for Pride and Prejudice in the ninth grade She sang in the Chorale and Ladies in Blue, and participated for one term as a musical theatre specialist in Orchesis Dance Theatre

“I went to Saint Mary’s for the performing arts department,” says Prestage “The arts at Saint Mary’s got me out of bed every day and

made me realize that musical theatre was more than just a hobby or extracurricular – it was what I want to do with the rest of my life ”

Prestage is inspired by the power of musical theater to tell a story to a different audience each night

“There is someone in every audience who needs to hear some message or story because of something they may be going through and to know that I can touch them in some way, whether large or small, is what gets me out on the stage every time It’s wonderful to have a platform on which emotion can be utilized so greatly I think we live in a world where we are told to suppress our emotions sometimes, and I enjoy being part of an art where I’m told to use emotions to touch others and to use what you feel to reach someone else, to give them a new perspective, to learn something new about themselves or others or the world we live in

“The experience of being in the shows at Saint Mary’s also inspired me,” says Prestage “I had teachers and friends encouraging me who saw potential in me and who challenged me to do things out of my comfort zone that I loved doing and that showed me I had a growing passion for theatre as a professional career ”

In addition to her experiences inside the gates at Saint Mary’s, she says going to school in Raleigh opened so many doors for her beyond the gates During two summers during high school, she attended programs

at two prestigious schools – a summer drama intensive at the North Carolina School of the Arts and a six-week drama intensive at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh During the school year, she tapped into the resources in the Raleigh arts community, performing with Performance Edge, Inc , directed by Lisa Blair Hawkins She took voice lessons with Hawkins and studied with a monologue coach off campus

“Saint Mary’s was awesome about letting me go to and from campus for special instruction because they understood I was pursuing a specific path,” says Prestage “I feel like I am the performer I am because of the opportunities I had both inside and outside the gates of SMS

Prestage is grateful for the many teachers, instructors, advisors, mentors, and family members who have supported her along the way

“I am ever grateful for my parents, Joy and Scott Prestage, who have supported me every step of the way and gotten me where I am,” she says “I am grateful they see the passion I have and want to see me continue pursuing something that makes me so happy I also have two older brothers who show up for every performance and who are still protective over me and just want me to be safe and happy ”

Her grateful list also includes voice teachers Angela Martin in Clinton and Lisa Blair Hawkins in Raleigh; her voice and theater instructors at SMS who gave her a stage on which to perform and grow; her college counselor; her Saint Mary’s English teacher who taught her to write well; her teachers at Michigan; and the directors and producers of shows like Grease, who have given her a story tell and a role to play

Prestage also credits Saint Mary’s for the comprehensive preparation it gave her for college and life

“Out of all my transitions from high school to college, the academic transition was the most seamless for me because of Saint Mary’s,” says Prestage “Since Saint Mary’s is a rigorous college preparatory school, the expectations are similar to those at the University of Michigan in terms of academics, solid relationships with faculty, and the Honor Code Adjusting to campus life was something I learned at Saint Mary’s Having been a boarding student in high school, I easily made the transition to life on a college campus, and I have Saint Mary’s to thank for that Saint Mary’s taught me that it’s okay to go away from home, to explore who you are and what your interests are, meet new people, and grow into yourself Saint Mary’s gave me the courage and strength to go anywhere on my own ”

Those life lessons will serve Prestage well, as she completes her senior year in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and sets her sights on Broadway

During her senior year at Michigan, she plans to produce and star in The Last Five Years, a musical written by Jason Robert Brown She will also, as a graduation requirement, showcase a song to be performed for the Ann Arbor community and for talent scouts and casting agents in New York Following college graduation, Prestage plans to move to New York City to chase her dreams of performing musical theater on Broadway

“I want to perform on Broadway, but I think success will mean just being happy performing and doing what I love Performing, singing, dancing, and acting have made me the happiest I have been in my life, and if I get to keep doing that in some way for the rest, I know I will be happy Whether that means local or regional theater or Broadway, I’ll be happy But my absolute dream is to perform on Broadway I’m also interested in using my minor in casting, producing, and writing – creating theater in some way and growing as an artist I just want to spend the rest of my life making art ”

Favorite Saint Mary’s memories:

Dorm life! I have the most wonderful memories living in Penick, Cruikshank, and Smedes I still miss it being like a 24/7 sleepover and always having each other nearby in a close-knit community

Favorite spot on campus: Bratton Hall! I grew up in that building where the arts program is centered Those walls saw my lowest lows and my highest highs The girl who walked into Bratton as a ninth grader was not the same young woman who walked out four years later

Overall Saint Mary’s experience:

Uplifting! I love all girls’ schools There is such power in female relationships, and we are stronger when we stand together, support one another, and lift each other up That is what I learned from Saint Mary’s

Visual and Performing Arts at Saint Mary’s:

Empowering! I gained so much confidence through doing Chorale concerts, Ladies in Blue performances, the plays and musicals, and classes I really stepped into myself and discovered who I was and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – pretty empowering!

Virginia McSwain Carson, Ph.D.: Distinguished Alumna Award

Dr Virginia McSwain Carson, Ph D , ’67C received the 2022 Distinguished Alumna Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in professional work or volunteer service

Dr Carson enjoyed a distinguished 47-year career as an educational leader She became the seventh president of South Georgia College in 2009, after serving as interim president of the college Dr Carson successfully led the consolidation of South Georgia College and Waycross College into South Georgia State College and led it through a long-term strategy to foster student achievement

A native of Macon, Georgia, she was vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Highlands College in Rome She previously served as dean of academic services for Georgia Perimeter College’s Clarkston, Georgia, campus from 2000 to 2001 Prior to this appointment, she served as chair of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, also on GPC’s Clarkston campus

Dr Carson spent the 1999-2000 academic year as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow at Northern Virginia Community College, in Annandale, Virginia In 2004, she was chosen to participate in a Fulbright International Education Seminar in Germany

Dr Carson is past president of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) She represented Georgia on the executive council of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission (SACS) on Colleges and served as state chair of the Georgia SACS commissioners She edited the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Review, a refereed mathematics journal, from 1998 to 2003

She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, and a M Ed and Ph D in mathematics education from Georgia State University She and husband Francis Carson, a retired engineer, have three adult children and several grandchildren

Vicky McKenzie Armes ’62C: Outstanding Alumna Award

Vicky McKenzie Armes ’62CArmes received the 2022 Outstanding Alumna Award, given annually for outstanding service to the school through leadership, student recruitment, and alumnae support

Mrs Armes has spent her life dedicated to her family and education Married to Jim Armes, who died in 2016, she is proud mother to Martin Armes and Lawson Armes ’87HS ’89C and grandmother to several, including Sarah Pratt Armes ’23

After graduating from Saint Mary’s, Mrs Armes earned a B A in Elementary Education at UNC-Chapel Hill She retired in 2000 after decades of teaching Title 1 math and serving as the Title 1 facilitator in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and Marlboro County, South Carolina She is an active member of St Paul’s Anglican Church, where she was organist for more than 25 years She attributes her love of organ music to her Saint Mary’s teacher Russell Broughton She has served faithfully for many years on the Alumnae Leadership Council at Saint Mary’s, including as chair of the leadership and governance committees

Saint Mary’s Alumnae Council created the Mazie Strickland Froelich ’51C Society to honor Mrs Froelich’s legacy of leadership, philanthropy, and service at our alma mater Mrs Froelich served with distinction as the chair of the board of trustees

Emily Smith ’01 named director of alumnae engagement

Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina, is pleased to announce that alumna and staff member Emily Smith, a graduate of the school’s class of 2001, has been named director of alumnae engagement, effective August 15, 2022 Smith has served in various positions in the school’s admission office since 2005 She earned a B A in communications at East Carolina University

In her new role, Smith will serve as the point person for Saint Mary’s Alumnae Association including some 10,000 women worldwide, preside over the Alumnae Leadership Council, represent the alumnae at school events, and work to provide creative and meaningful ways for alumnae to engage with their alma mater She will also work with members of the board of trustees, school administration, and several studentled organizations and clubs

“Saint Mary’s is a community with deep talent and experience,” says Julie Ricciardi, Saint Mary’s associate head of school for institutional advancement “For Emily, the totality of her work with admissions has always been deeply rooted in the work that we know is fostered by a full understanding of working with our alumnae ”

In addition to her work in alumnae engagement, Smith serves as a residential faculty member and advisor to the Beacon honorary leadership organization at Saint Mary’s She serves as advisor to the school’s Granddaughters Club, founded in 1909 to recognize students who are descendants of Saint Mary’s alumnae

Saint Mary’s is my school, my alma mater, my beloved workplace, and my home. I am happy to broaden my work for the school in an exciting new way working closely with our alumnae sisterhood of accomplished women across the country and the globe.

She is a past recipient of the Dean Jones Award at Saint Mary’s and the Faculty/Staff Service Award, both for outstanding contributions to campus life by a staff member

As a Saint Mary’s student, she was senior class president; a member of the varsity volleyball, basketball, softball teams; athletic trainer for the Saints state championship soccer team; an acolyte; and admissions tour guide

Smith says she enjoys the opportunity to work in a position where she can build upon her Saint Mary’s experience “It’s easy to support and promote your school when the mission of preparing young women for college and life has stayed consistent throughout our 181-year history ”

Saint Mary’s School formally announced at a spectacular gala event in Pittman Auditorium and Kenan Library, Thursday, March 31, 2022, that the school has received a gift of more than $6 million as part of the Saint Mary’s Forever Campaign for the creation of The Blanche Robertson Bacon Performing Arts Center

The gift is made in honor and memory of alumna Blanche Robertson Bacon ’53HS ’55C, by members of her family Family members supporting this important initiative include the late Julian H Robertson, Jr , Mrs Bacon’s brother; Wyndham Robertson, Mrs Bacon’s sister; Blanche Spencer Williamson, Mrs Bacon’s daughter, and a member of the school’s high school Class of 1976 and current member of the school’s Alumnae Leadership Council; Julian and Beth Williamson and family, Mrs Bacon’s son (a member of the school’s Board of Trustees) and daughter-in-law (also past and current parents); and Caroline Williamson and family, Mrs Bacon’s daughter-in-law At the family’s request, the facility will be known as the Blanche Center

The Blanche Center will bolster Saint Mary’s commitment to interdisciplinary interaction as well as excellence in personal artistic exploration and participation This multifunctional center will be comprised of the Eliza Battle Pittman Auditorium, a Raleigh Historic Property built in 1907, along with a new state-of-the-art adjoining facility Enjoy few of the scenes from an amazing evening at Saint Mary's School!

Saint Mary’s celebrates Mary Lou Jones on 90th birthday

Mary Virginia Swain ’77C Director of Public Relations and Publications

Mary Lou Jones was honored with a 90th birthday celebration, Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Saint Mary’s School, where she served for more than 35 years in the roles of head tennis coach, distinguished faculty member, chair of the physical education department, and beloved dean of students The event held, in Smedes-Emory Parlor in historic Smedes Hall, was attended by hundreds of her former players, students, colleagues, and friends

A North Carolina Tennis Hall of Famer, Jones recorded 330 wins against just 95 losses as head coach of Saint Mary’s college and high school tennis teams from the 1960s into the 1990s, including 12 undefeated seasons, the 1980 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) high school state championship, six consecutive North Carolina Women’s Colleges State Tournament championships (1984-1989), and many North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) high school conference and North Carolina Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NCAIAW) collegiate district championships She held her legendary summer tennis camps at Saint Mary’s from 1974-1998 A countless number of her players went on to play collegiate tennis at the top colleges and universities

in the state and nation She built the modern-day athletics program at Saint Mary’s, moving the school from an intramural athletic program to intercollegiate and interscholastic competition at the highest levels She twice received the Richard G Stone Distinguished Service Award at Saint Mary’s College and High School

As a competitive tennis player, Jones was the winner of more than 200 tournament championships since 1948 in singles and doubles throughout North Carolina and the South, including North Carolina Tennis Association (NCTA) state championships and number one state rankings in singles and doubles She was highly ranked in the Southern Tennis Association in singles and doubles, including number one in the South in women’s doubles She was a five-time Eastern Carolina Tennis Association singles champion and won numerous Raleigh city championships

Jones was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1979, was named NCTA Pro of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Tennis Professionals in 1989, was the Piedmont Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (PACIS) Coach of the Year in 1987, was named

to Who’s Who in American Tennis in 1984 and received the National High School Coaching Award in 1987 She was the first player in North Carolina to use a steel racket when she pioneered the new tennis technology for Wilson Sporting Goods at the 1967 North Carolina Closed Tournament in Greensboro Jones served as coach of the Junior Wightman Cup Team for North Carolina in 1958 Off the tennis court, she served as Raleigh’s community ambassador to Israel in 1963, was inducted into the Wake County YWCA Academy of Women in 1990, was recipient of a Distinguished Women of North Carolina Award from the N C Council of Women in 1999, received the prestigious Friend of Agriculture Award from the Lee County N C Cooperative Extension

Center in 2016, and is a member of Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who of the South and Southwest, among other honors She was a longtime golf instructor alongside Peggy Kirk Bell at the Bells’ Pine Needles Resort in Southern Pines

She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education and master’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was president of the Women’s Athletic Association and later honored in 1988 by the UNC Physical Education Department as an outstanding alumna

Libba Kornegay Pate, who reports that she is 92-years-old, writes from Fayetteville, “I moved six houses down the street, to a one-story house, about 15 years ago  (I had lived in the two-story house for 40 years ) I have a wonderful helper who comes four times a day to help me and my almost 17-year-old, blind, deaf, toothless, four-pound poodle  My helper is my driver, too  About a month ago I fell and broke my hip, so I am home recovering now, but this is much too slow  With this beautiful weather I only have to go out to my side yard (I live on a corner) and see my neighbors walk by  It is so good to see them  I do wish I could go to Saint Mary's for the spring gathering  My two years at Saint Mary's was very special with many wonderful memories ” Sue Joyner Ferraro writes from Belton, Missouri, “My big news is two new great-grandsons! My granddaughter, Sarah, and her husband, Chris, have a son born Nov 28, 2021, Reed Cowan Malawey They live in Wasilla, Alaska, so I have not seen the baby yet He is red-headed like his mother and her brother, and their dad, my son Mike My grandson Mike and his wife Alex have a baby boy born Feb 17, 2022 He is Rowan Grey Ferraro I have seen him, and both babies are precious and healthy Rowan is not red-headed, but that could change He and his parents live in Eureka, Missouri, outside of St Louis I’m a proud and happy grandma! Dear Class of ‘63, Here’s news from Lea Hall Ivey in Oxford: Lea Lea’s husband, Dave, who died in 2020, loved living in Morocco as a teenager Because of this, Lea Lea is taking six family members to Morocco for a two-week tour and understandably “wishes he were here to enjoy it with us ” According to Diane Croonenberghs Tilghman, “I’m still living in Raleigh, at Springmoor Retirement, and have made many new friends with whom I play bridge and other card games ” Needless to say, moving from Dunn to Raleigh was a huge adjustment, but it’s working for Diane We wish her well! It’s always great to hear from Charleston, South Carolina, resident Charlotte deLoach Riley. She and husband Joe are still living in their Gibbs Street house of 52 years but

are on the list for Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community, where several Saint Mary’s girls reside Retired from real estate, Charlotte enjoys having her two sons and their families in the area to occupy her time As she does with each newsletter, Charlotte graciously invites classmates to contact her if they are in the area! Another of our “regulars,” Hilda Little Jones, responded with news from Pensacola, Florida She and husband Ray “remain healthy and active and even managed to travel some during the pandemic, including Italy ” They planned to return to Italy in June 2022 to see their younger daughter, who lives there, as well as visit several wine makers for Ray’s business Their older daughter and her family will join them later for a grand reunion! More news from Florida comes from Flo McNeer Hamilton in Lake Alfred She now has three great-grandchildren, all of whom belong to son Rob’s two children Flo’s daughter, Deborah, was getting married in May in Huntsville, Alabama, and Flo is getting two new grandchildren from that union Deborah’s daughter, Emma Grace Bailey, a musical theater major in college in Chicago, will be in summer stock in New Jersey this summer! According to Flo, “I have a few medical issues--who doesn’t at our age--but muddling through and still playing a lot of bridge and very involved in my church ” Anita Strickland Christopher sends “Greetings to the Class of ’63” from Grand Rapids, Michigan She reports that she and her husband attended their granddaughter’s 2022 graduation from UVA School of Law and that another granddaughter was just finishing her first year at Wheaton College in Illinois The Christophers are “enjoying the good life, being snowbirds from Michigan to Florida ” Anita is also coordinating the 2022 National Day of Prayer for the state of Michigan Katharine Miller Pollard writes, “I live in the same old house where both children were raised in Great Neck Point My one-acre garden is lots of work! I have seven grown grandchildren, all on their own, and seven great-grands, two born within the last year No dogs, only wild birds and critters to feed! All is well ” As for my news, Ben and I are still enjoying the slow pace of life in Eastern North Carolina, Rocky Mount to be exact! I stay busy, and mostly out of trouble, with my so-called duties as a Nash County Extension Master Gardener and can be found most often at the Nash County Arboretum in Nashville or the Ask A Master Gardener booth at the Nash County Farmers Market in Rocky Mount! The Idaho Association of Special Education Administrators presented its Outstanding Special Education Administrator Award to Saint Mary’s alumna Joy Jansen ’90HS The award is presented to a special education director who has excelled in the management of special education programs, promoted excellence in the education and service of students with disabilities, and promoted the profession of special education administration, including the Idaho Association of Special Administrators, ant the Idaho Association of School Administrators to a higher level

Ms Jansen has worked for more than 25 years in the field of serving individuals with special needs that spans the continuum from elementary to postsecondary education Currently, she is the director of special education, elementary school counseling, and nursing for the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) in Sandpoint, Idaho Before LPOSD she served as the director of special education/learning center for two therapeutic residential schools in northern Idaho She obtained a Ph D in education with a focus in neuropsychological deficiencies from the University of Idaho and holds an M Ed in special education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Ms Jansen has an extensive background in working with children, adolescents, and adults in the areas of specific learning disabilities, attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and various mental health conditions Over the years, she has presented at both local, state, and national conferences on such topics as executive functioning, brainbased learning, social and emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, attachment and learning, and teacher-student relationships Lastly, to support the youth of her community and fill her passion for experiential and placebased education, she serves as the education advisor for Selkirk Outdoor Leadership and Education (SOLE)

Liz Burleson Hudson ’69C Greetings, ladies I hope everyone has stayed healthy and had a fun summer This will be a short letter as only three people responded Please make my life easier and try to respond next time!  Bonnie Bowen Banks said she was part of the Moderna trial and was monitored like a hawk Bonnie said that we should all know how incredibly detailed their test was She first got the placebo, but finally got the real thing when the trial was unblinded Unfortunately, she did get COVID but is okay Bonnie and her husband Bernard visited Kerr Blackwell Tallberg in her beautiful new condo in Columbia, South Carolina, and had fun catching up Bonnie stayed in Blowing Rock this summer Teresa Rhodes Rosenberger is living in Concord, New Hampshire, and says, “It has been a cold two years in New England with COVID” but says they have kept busy doing lots of hiking, cross country skiing and even putting heaters on their porch so they could have the neighbors over for “cocktails in down jackets ” Teresa’s middle child moved to Vienna last September and they planned to visit him over the summer They have been able to go to D C to visit their daughter and her three kids Her other daughter lives in Cambridge, Massahussetts, so they see her a lot Teresa is still working (bless her heart!) but changed firms just before COVID so has not yet even been to the office She says that is fine with her, as she can take walks or play pickleball in the middle of the day and never “puts on a suit or wears makeup ” I know a lot of us feel the same way Sue Willingham Upchurch is still living in Blairsville, Georgia, and says that life is percolating along at a slower pace as the “old body has started screaming,” but life is good I know that many of us are feeling the same way! I am afraid that I have very sad news to impart, as we have lost another member of our class I received a response to the newsletter card from Rebecca Reid Smiley’s close friend, Carl, that she had passed in July of 2021 after a nine-year battle with Alzheimer’s  Rebecca was my roommate in college and in D C after we graduated I am sure we will all miss her I, Elizabeth Burleson Hudson, am still living outside of Lenoir and enjoying my beautiful mountain views and keeping busy by volunteering at the Helping Hands Free Pharmacy and the Lenoir Service League Charity Thrift Shop My sad news is that I lost my husband very suddenly in June 2021 It was a big shock and the suddenness has been difficult to deal with However, I have had wonderful support from great neighbors and friends, so life moves on I wish everyone health, happiness, and many years with great Saint Mary’s friends Love, Liz

Sara Coleman Cann reports, “Life is very full right now and I’m loving the busyness! We are finally grandparents to Charlie, born in October 2021 in Mobile, Alabama, and Caroline, born in December 2021 in Charlotte Cousins, just two months apart!” They also have a son in Salt Lake City, Utah, so they are on the road a lot “I miss seeing more of our classmates but occasionally bump into them in our travels Bruce is finally retiring so I’m very ready for some serious trips!”

Becky Sutton Gray and her husband are both retired “We go to Hickory Baptist Church, where we teach, and I belong to a quilting ministry and a prayer shawl ministry We are also caregivers for my sister-in-law, who is blind and mentally challenged Hi, to all my classmates!”

I hope all of you are enjoying the summer By this time next year, we should have lots of news to share because the Class of 1973HS will have its 50th reunion in April! We have already formed a committee (thanks to all of you who agreed to serve on it!), so I hope as many of you who can possibly attend will be there for it After all, it’s one of those BIG milestones in our lives I plan to fly up from Mississippi to be there, and I can’t wait to see you all Nan Brantley Bayless writes that she is in Raleigh frequently with two sons and a future daughter-in-law living there She adds that between COVID and retirement, her husband is home more Nan says that “proximity is reshaping who we are as a couple and how we live, mostly in good ways ” Nan also says that on a recent trip to Raleigh, Anna Johnson Smith, Sugar Cheshire McOwen, GinGin Brogden ’75C, and she shared a delicious lunch at Anna’s house They had the best time reflecting back on their years together and the friendships developed at Saint Mary’s She ended by saying, “Our reunion will be so much fun Wasn’t our class awesome?!” Susan Rogers Cassedy writes that she and Marshall haven’t traveled other than a quick trip to New York to visit their youngest son Their oldest son is still in the Orlando, Florida, area with his wife and children, ages seven and five Susan’s middle son and his wife live in Tallahassee, Florida The Cassedys headed to their place in the North Carolina mountains for the summer (along with everyone else from Florida!), and she was

really looking forward to that! Martha Woodard Pearlman writes that she is still enjoying retirement and has been traveling a lot after she became vaccinated She obviously loves to cruise, because she was looking forward to a cruise from Barcelona to Rome in May, and has five more cruises planned, including visiting South America and Antarctica in early 2023, as well as a trip to Morocco! Wow, Martha, you may get the travel award for our class! In March, Martha went to the UNC versus UCLA Sweet Sixteen game in Philadelphia, which is close to where she lives Since she shares UNC football and basketball tickets with a friend, she hopes to go to lots of games this fall and beyond Go Heels! Nancy Kerr Thomason writes, “It is hard for me to believe that it was almost 50 years ago that we graduated from Saint Mary’s It was hands down one of the most influential times in my life I retired last July after 20 years in banking, followed by 21 years running a family office I live at Topsail Beach full time now and am still waiting for a day that I am bored! My sons are 25 and 29, and no grandchildren on the horizon…maybe one day! Mark and both boys are happy and healthy! I remain very connected with Saint Mary’s via the Saint Mary’s Forever Campaign and the investment committee for the endowment I am still filled with awe each time I walk into the Chapel I hope we can get a huge turnout for our 50th reunion next spring ” Susanne Owens Logan reports that she retired August 31, 2021, and she and her husband went to Maine for the month of September instead of their usual two weeks Her husband is still working, at least until the end of 2022 Both of his “smart and fun” daughters are still in the Atlanta area, so they periodically have them over for dinner or go out and do something together Susanne writes, “Retirement is proving very rewarding I make a point to have no commitments on Mondays and savor that I do not have to be anywhere Reading, gardening, and cooking often fill my Mondays I have done a lot of projects around the house that I never had time or energy for before Other days, I have routines falling into place On Tuesdays, I volunteer at a food pantry, assisting ‘shoppers ’ I do yoga at least once a week In April, I went on a kayaking and yoga retreat with my yoga instructor and a dozen women ranging in age from their 50s to 80s, which was inspirational to say the least! I have been taking a pottery class with one of my stepdaughters since March It is the first time I have done any pottery since taking pottery classes at Saint Mary’s, and I am really enjoying that! I am looking forward to our reunion next year and hope we have a record turnout!” Gina Doty DeMarsh says she is no longer working part-time at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church She continues with her handwork and planned to visit Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, this summer Catherine Phillips Winslow reports that she now has three grandchildren—Rosemary (3), her

brother Oliver (3 months), and granddaughter Sawyer (21 months) Rosemary and Oliver live in D C , and Sawyer lives in Greensboro She doesn’t get to see them as often as she’d like since her parents (ages 94 and 91) are requiring much more care She ends by saying, “I look forward to seeing you all next year at our 50th!”

Sarah Wilson Woodard writes that she is still working, and “there aren’t enough hours in the day!” She is still serving as deacon at St Titus’ Episcopal Church in Durham She adds that the church is in transition, but things are going well with an interim priest, and a search will begin soon to hire a new rector She ends by saying that she is “already looking forward to our 50th reunion and hope and pray that folks will attend!”

Terri Jansen Senter and I caught up with each other on the phone recently She is enjoying life in Wilmington after living outside of North Carolina for so many years, although she and Bill miss the delicious seafood in Mississippi! It is taking her longer to get settled in, but they are making progress She is yet another classmate who is looking forward to our 50th reunion! As for me, I am still working, with no plans to retire anytime soon I jokingly tell people that Tim and I are so busy on the weekends doing yard work, then going to either ballroom or square dances, that I look forward to getting to the office on Mondays so I can rest! We are in our 13th year of ballroom dance lessons and are finally learning

the proper way to shag, and we love it! Nobody here in Mississippi knows what it is, so I guess we need to head to the North Carolina or South Carolina beaches for some good shag dancing My grandson, Brady, just turned two in April and is now living in Brisbane, Australia My daughter, Laura, accepted a three-year contract to work in Shanghai, but with the crazy quarantines and lockdowns going on over there, she and BJ decided to move to Brisbane and live with his parents until conditions improve in China Meanwhile, Tim and I planned to visit Brisbane to see them in June It’s a beautiful place, and I wouldn’t mind if they would just stay there Laura was featured in Financial Times Magazine in February for her career path that led her all over the world, mainly in the field of human resources Once again, I thank all of you who shared news with us and, yes, I will fly to Raleigh next spring for our 50th reunion! We made it! We’re almost already there! We’re on the way! Okay, we’re working on it, but in our minds, we are the stately oak trees! If we stick together for just a few more months, we will reach the dream! We will win our medals! It’s our 50th year of Saint Mary’s bliss! Somehow the

years have flown, we’ve stood tall, but not still, and magically our 50th reunion is upon us  Can you believe it? This is our moment, so make plans for spring ’23!  We will have a surprise celebrity guest join us if all goes according to schedule Can’t tell yet, can’t tell But there were seven medals He won seven gold medals! The first response came from a delighted  Jane Hight McMurry in Wilmington, who used her COVID time wisely, renovating her house  Jane is now grandma to eight little ones, and “I don’t know but I’ve been told?” (EDL PLEZPNEI) there’s someone else she’s delighted with That little detail came from  Blair Coffield Schuetz in Bremerton, Washington, playing free golf with her husband, Reinhold Retirement aside, Blair took on a three-day-a-week job as a starter/marshal at their local golf course, entitling her to tee off day and night if she wants! Blair has traveled to Hawaii, Texas, and Utah in the last year, but no mention of French lessons “It’s a peaceful, easy feeling” (LGASEE) Ann Beland Brooks is in Raleigh, and stays in touch with Jane and Candace Currin Taylor

Michelle was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, July 25, 1975   She was predeceased by her parents, Milton Rae “Kip” Oppegaard and Annette Boryk Oppegaard

Left to cherish wonderful memories of Michelle are her daughter, Anna Amelia Boryk Weaver ’22, a recent Saint Mary’s graduate; son, Eric Michael Weaver; fiancé, Jose Pinheiro; brother, Michael Oppegaard and his wife, Susanne; and many dear friends

Mary Legg Moore’s grandbaby party has only just begun!   To date, she and husband Mike have three little beauties:  Molly and Will’s Kate and Caroline, and Frank and Betty’s little Charlie Baby Love (EHT RSEMPEUS) “Oh, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now ” (OBB YADLIN) Surely I’ve used that line before, but now it really does resonate knowing that we have all known each other so long  In my head I’m still 21 (or so) – it’s those darn mirrors that mess me up! Life is good and I am so blessed Swimming, painting, writing, and consulting with brides, with a little garden dirt under my nails on the side--this is my life! My incredibly feisty, remarkable, ultra-conservative mother, Mary Lynn Lewis DeLany ’44C is 96, a real hoot, and only an hour away, which is a true gift The love of my life, “baby” Marshall, now has lots of curly hair and runs circles around me but his hugs are the best  He is my grandbaby, and just shy of two years, (born Christmas Day) Liza-mom and Jeremy-dad are right here and know I love to babysit!  Winnie is in Durham, which is great--closer than ever so we get together often Both daughters are my pride and joy  They are The Most Beautiful Girls in the World! (LHERCIA CRHI)A special thanks to Henni Towler Corbin and her “Heart of Gold” (ELIN UGNOY) for helping me with all the ’70s song lyrics and artists for this newsletter Henni knows her music, and I am most appreciative for her input! After 20 years in banking and 21 years running a family office, Nancy Kerr Thomason finally retired last July She was concerned as to what she would do all day but now wonders how she held down a job  Nancy came to Topsail Beach in 2015 to care for her mother who had Alzheimer’s  When she died in 2016, Nancy stayed and was one of the pioneers of working from home She totally gets the post pandemic people who do not want to return to the office! Mark still spends time in both Atlanta and Topsail Their sons (26 and 29) are in careers they love but no wives or grandchildren on the horizon Nancy still considers her days at Saint Mary’s as some of the best and most formative of her life She is currently working with Saint Mary’s Forever Campaign and urges those of us who have not given to the Annual Fund to please do so, ensuring that the generations to come can have the transformative Saint Mary’s experience Lynn Harand Hankins loved seeing some of her buddies at the reunion in June 2021 She was reminded once again of the beautiful relationships, memories, and experiences she will always treasure from Saint Mary’s Lynn missed those who were unable to make it and hopes to see us all in 2025 for our 50th! Well, I carried the banner alone for our class at our 45th reunion weekend in April, so I missed you all, but we will try again and plan earlier for a fun reunion in five years It was good to hear from several of you with news Emily Bass Baumgartner  sent greetings from Colorado Sissy Holman Chesnutt says her life news stays constant She works part-time for Chesnutt & Clemmons, P A , with no retirement plan anytime soon The law firm has added a new office in Morehead City, which works great for her during Bingo season! In 1995, the family sold The News & Observer and the weekly newspapers it owned in surrounding counties to McClatchy Newspapers of Sacramento, California But Frank still had ink in his veins and led a group to buy The Pilot newspaper in Southern Pines The Pilot later bought statewide magazine Business North Carolina and regional lifestyle magazines Pine Straw, O Henry, South Park and Walter and the Country Bookshop in Southern Pines

Frank attended Woodberry Forest School and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with an A B in history, in 1953

On June 4, 1954, he married Julia Jones, and they became a formidable couple They enjoyed a long and lively union Frank joined the Air Force in 1955 and served in Japan during the early years of their marriage Upon returning to North Carolina, they settled in Raleigh

On June 30, former Saint Mary’s trustee, Frank A Daniels Jr died peacefully in bed at his home at age 90 after a month of declining health filled with visits from his family and friends His wife of 68 years, Julia Jones Daniels, was by his side

Frank was born at Rex Hospital in Raleigh to Ruth Aunspaugh Daniels and Frank Arthur Daniels, and into a newspaper family For many years, he was publisher of The News & Observer in Raleigh, which his family owned and published for several generations

He was proud, as he would say, that he was born with “ink in his veins,” and he loved The News & Observer and its role in Raleigh, in North Carolina, and that it was also part of a national industry that was important to preserving and protecting the people and the country they built

His obituary from the Associated Press said, “During his 26 years as publisher of the paper of record for state politics and government, The N&O became a regional powerhouse for news, especially from the state’s growing Research Triangle region, and an online pioneer Similarly, his tenure as chair of AP’s board of directors in the mid-1990s was marked by the not-for-profit news cooperative’s technological expansion ”

His grandfather, Josephus Daniels, bought The News & Observer in 1894 and was editor and publisher of the newspaper until his death in 1948 His father was publisher from then until 1971, when Frank Jr was named president and publisher

He led The News & Observer through early innovation in digital publishing In 1994, he oversaw the launch of The N&O’s online newspaper, one of the first internet newspapers in the world

In 1996, the newspaper received the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service journalism for its work on the political and environment dangers that the hog industry was creating in North Carolina

During his lifetime of service to the publishing industry, Frank served as chairman of the board of The Associated Press as well as the American Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation He also served as

Frank was a long-time supporter of education in North Carolina As a member of the Raleigh Junior Chamber of Commerce, he was part of a group of young business leaders who helped convince the legislature to allow a merger of the Raleigh and Wake County Public School systems that enabled the systems to integrate successfully

He served on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, as a trustee of Woodberry Forest School, Saint Mary’s College and School, Peace College, and Appalachian State University, as well as the Institute of Private Enterprise at Kenan Flagler School of Business at UNC-Chapel Hill

Throughout his career, he served on countless community, state and national boards including as chairman of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Board as well as a director of the Smithsonian Business Ventures, the RDU Airport Authority, UNC Health board and as chairman of AAA of the Carolinas He also served as chairman of the Triangle United Way, the United Arts Council of Wake County, and Rex Hospital

For his civic leadership, he was recognized with the A E Finley Award for Public Service, the North Carolina Museum of History’s Philanthropist of the Year Award, the North Carolina Press Association’s North Carolinian of the Year and NC’s state’s highest civilian honor, the North Carolina Award for Public Service He and Julia Daniels were inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame in 2008

In 2020, the University of North Carolina Hussman School of Journalism and Media announced the Frank A Daniels Jr Executive in Residence Program

Surviving him in addition to his devoted wife, Julia, are his daughter, former Saint Mary’s trustee Julie Daniels ’78C and her husband, Tom West, of Sun Valley, Idaho, and Raleigh; son, Frank A Daniels III and his wife, Carol Goss Daniels, of Clarksville, Tennessee Grandchildren include Kimberly Daniels Taws and her husband, John, of Pinehurst; Frank A Daniels IV and his wife, Ellie Gilbert Perry ’05, of Southern Pines; and Joseph Davison Daniels of Nashville, Tennessee Step-grandchildren include Megan Koontz and her husband Tyler of Knoxville, Tenn , and Samantha Miravalle and her husband Nicholas of Augusta, Georgia; great-grandchildren include Reed and Josephus (Whit) Taws, Wade and Frank A Daniels V; and step-great-grandchildren Finnegan and Emmeline Miravalle and Aiden and James Koontz

A memorial service was held on July 11 at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh

Ann Martha was fortunate to create flowers for both of Betsy’s daughters’ weddings She got to visit with Betsy,  Ann Barwick Whichard, Laura Lewis Rogers, and Nan Smith Yates – a small SMC reunion! Martha has enjoyed creating flowers for brides for 15 years Now that she has turned 65, she plans to slowly bow of out of the business of floral designer Her business, Artfully Arranged, has been very good to her, and she has made so many friends through her connection with brides and their mothers – very rewarding work Martha and  Anne Boone Shelton Urquhart  stay close and try to get together as often as they can Martha says she loves her beautiful connections with SMC friends! I, Mary Virginia Swain, just celebrated 35 years on the staff at Saint Mary’s, and am still enjoying the work, so plan to continue working a few more years The students make it so much fun and so rewarding I see my usual group of Saint Mary’s classmates around Raleigh and in Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach –  Barbara Johnston Bush, Jeanne Bridger Konitzer, Morgie Towler Duke, Kim Shavlik Randolph, Nancy Thompson Heathcote, Katherine Wooten Bailey, Caroline Holt Stirling, and others in other classes I enjoyed a fun golf weekend last summer at Morgie’s charming cottage at CCNC in Pinehurst, along with another friend and enjoy playing trivia night sometimes out and about in Raleigh with Morgie and her delightful husband, David I’ll sign off by saying that I am happy to continue doing this each year, but I don’t want to monopolize the job! We have moved to Alexandria, Virginia, live in Old Town Our new parish is St Paul’s Episcopal Church Rock Creek, founded in 1712 Our first Sunday was June 5, and yes, all of the Ragsdales and Traches were there, including my sister, Mary Foy Ragsdale ’77HS ’79C, and our mother, Carolyn Foy Ragsdale ’54HS ’56C. They are dividing time between Raleigh and Morehead City, enjoying being grandparents to Eleanor (3), Jones (3), and Woodson (5 months) Dana Darden Copeland says she is finishing up her 34th year of teaching She is pleased that her son is now working as an attorney in Norfolk and she is so happy to have him back in the Tidewater! Ann Tyler Edmunds Allen’s  daughter, Meg, graduated from James Madison University in May 2021 Allison Gilbert Holmes’s son, Stuart, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in May 2021 Son James graduated from N C State in June 2021 Coles Hines Jones’s  son, Reidy, got married in Atlantic Beach to Jennah Fahey on August 28, 2021 Coles’ mother died on June 1, 2021 Gwyn Cooley Pearce’s mother-in-law passed away in June 2021  Her cousin, Margaret Burgwyn ’65HS ’67C also passed away in June 2021 So proud of  Margaret McGlohon and all that she did for our school  She retired at our 40th reunion in June  Saint Mary’s alums were able to raise over $417,000 to start a scholarship in her name   Also, another surprise is that the pavilion was named for her   What a deserving reward to Margaret for all of her years she gave to our school! I hope that she is getting some well-deserved rest Lee Trotter Dixon had a discectomy  She had a herniated disc and it was sitting on a nerve  She has some nerve damage and is having a lot of leg pain from it  Recovery is a slow process but she is doing better Ruth E Perry Holding is a grandmother again  This is her third grandchild  His name is Jones Powell Bailey and he weighed in at a whopping 10 pounds, six ounces! He is Perry Holding Bailey ’09 and James’ third son Freeman (2) and Royall (1) are the big brothers Ashley Richardson Allen  and husband Steve took an amazing trip last summer  They covered six states in 18 days and logged 3,335 miles in an RV  Ashley said the national parks were crowded so they limited their time there  They didn’t hike as much as they had thought due to the heat wave, but they saw plenty to fill their adventurous spirits   They took more back roads than interstates and marveled at the sheer beauty of our country  Some of the highlights that Ashley and Steve liked: no television for three weeks, Mount Rushmore, the burial site of Sacajawea, and all of the Lewis and Clark history (Their route followed so much of the trek Lewis and Clark took ) Fly fishing in the Flaming Gorge was also amazing scenery Lee Trotter Dixon has become a grandmother again Her new granddaughter was born on September 4, 2021 Her name is Parker Elizabeth Corbin  She weighed eight pounds and four ounces and was 22 inches long Murray Smith Parker’s  father passed away on September 5, 2021 Caroline Sanders Hatcher’s daughter, Clare, married Johnny Joyce on April 24, 2021 They live in Denver I went to South Carolina for a wedding and met up with  Caroline Sanders Hatcher while I was there  I had the best time catching up with her  She took me on a tour of Beaufort, South Carolina, and she also showed me her fabulous house I asked her to show me the store that she started If you are in the area, make sure you stop by and check it out   They

have some fabulous art from local artists The name of the store is Macdonald Marketplace Julie Oakman Barringer let me know that her daughter, Grayson, got married on April 2, 2022, on Kiawah Island, South Carolina Julie said that it was truly an international event, with family and friends coming from Brazil and Germany Nick, her son-in-law, has a Brazilian mom and a German dad They also had guests come as far away as Abu Dhabi  They had 240 guests and an unbelievably memorable weekend of celebration Mary Jeannette Mardre Moseley’s mother passed away on April 23, 2022 Margaret McGlohon wrote that it is hard to believe that it has been over a year since she retired from Saint Mary’s What an incredible 26 years she had as a staff member  She was so honored at the reunion in 2021 with the scholarship and dedication of the pavilion in her name  She continues to be appreciative of all the love and support she received during her time at this very special school She loved being able to travel for Saint Mary’s and promote our alma mater to all our amazing alumnae  She has missed seeing our alumnae  This past year has been full of travel – beach, mountains, the Berkshires, Vermont with UNC friends, Florida for her niece’s graduation from college, Ohio for her godson’s graduation from medical school And to top it off, she was working for Scott and Mary Barnett Hale ’84C on the Grand Western Tour for 30 days this summer – wish her luck She has also enjoyed learning how to play pickleball and does so on a regular basis – a new twist for this tennis player  She hopes all the members of ’81C are doing well   So proud of Margaret and all that she did for our school! Molly Brooks writes that she's splitting time between Colorado and North Carolina, visiting friends Annie Gray Sprunt, Carolyn Thornton Swanson and Meg Adams Massey and circling back to her southern roots Her three children are all living and working in Colorado, and she is enjoying constant renovations of old properties Penny Hare Taylor is still in Lexington and has started a new position as a physician assistant at MedFirst in Thomasville  She loves cooking, as

She also has twin godchildren in Charleston, S C , Ella Grace and Everett Her husband is the facilities manager at Grace Episcopal Church, where they are very active He is retired from the Army National Guard as well as the Winston-Salem fire department His last tour of duty was a year in Iraq in 2005 Gray Cunningham Lynn is a colleague of mine at Natera She's on the IVF team and I am in oncology molecular diagnostics, so we chat often She's now living on beautiful 30-acres in the Florida panhandle with puppies Bella and Hank She's recently joined Berkshire Hathaway as a real estate agent If you are looking to retire to Florida, give her a call As for me, Mike and I continue to split our time between Richmond and Deltaville, where he fishes and I play croquet with The Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club I've just finished renovating two condos at Duncan Lee's historic Colonial Revival Tuckahoe building in Richmond, where I plan to retire (2-3 years) and re-engage my artistic roots  I bought a press and have begun making multi-media prints for the first time in years As always, the renovation included a great kitchen for my culinary pursuits and food styling hobby

Hey, all! We had a great reunion weekend at Saint Mary’s in April! Our class had a respectable turnout, too, which was great After campus festivities on Saturday, our class enjoyed a super-fun get-together (catered Mexican food and margaritas) at the home of Joan Comer Johnston in Raleigh Sending a big thank you to all who were involved in planning the 35th reunion party: Joan, Eleanor White Hunter, Marcy Everett Voelkel, Martha Anne Allen DuBose, and Margaret Hambrick Glaze. A sobering thought: at our next reunion in five years, we’ll all be 60! Eleanor’s daughter, Mary Ellen, works remotely in Raleigh and travels the country to cyber security conferences She is a public sector sales specialist for the software company, Polarity Eleanor says, “We had an awesome mother-daughter trip for a week in Waikiki, Hawaii, before she attended her TechNet Indo-Pacific conference I am so proud of her!” Kathy Respess writes that her job with Travis and Co is over a year old now, but she’s loving it still Kathy is also taking dance lessons! Tango, swing, and cha-cha, and brushing up on other dance styles Margaret Hambrick Glaze and husband Gene sold their house in December They are still in Hickory and remodeled the new place while living in it She says it was very exciting to come home and smell paint and sawdust and concrete! They have room for guests and she’d love to host any Saint Mary’s girls that want to visit Her eldest, Mac, graduated with honors from Appalachian in December, and works at Lowes Foods as a manager in training Catherine is at Western Carolina, and Wilson is in high school Susan Stephenson was sorry to miss the 35th class reunion Susan lives in Oakland, California, with husband Jon, and wishes more classmates would visit the San Francisco Bay area! She gets back to Raleigh two to three times a year and often catches up with Saint Mary’s friends She was looking forward to a 10-week sabbatical this summer from her job as executive director of Interfaith Power & Light, a nonprofit organization mobilizing action on climate change Trips to the Sierras, Berkshires, Boston, and Hudson River Valley are planned! Chrissy Bolin Rand (me!) is living in the Stuart, Florida, area Will and I celebrate 34 years of marriage this year Our daughter, Bethany, got married in Jacksonville Beach in December and is in her second year in a Ph D program in public health at University of Tennessee in Knoxville Our daughter, Victoria, and her family live in Corpus Christi, Texas, where we visited in June We now have three grandchildren! Cindy Ross Teague has been having lots of fun being back on Saint Mary's campus since her daughter, Emma, started there this past fall! mom, but I know God has always had his own plan for me I’m looking forward to our reunion next year It might be one of my few official outings since having kids! Robin Conklin writes, “For five years now, I have enjoyed my job as a school nurse at SMS I still live on campus with my husband and our animals--there is never a dull moment when you live in Cruikshank! This summer, I will become the director of the Binder Health Center, after the current director retires I was grateful to spend time with a few of our classmates recently, as we celebrated the life of Michelle Oppegaard, who we miss dearly ” I, Claudia Bishop Stubbs, have had another busy year with kids and work  I am continuing to work from home for a local school system, providing speech services virtually  It is really nice to be able to have a flexible schedule!  This is a big year for our kids  Sarah Claxton graduates preschool, John Bayley graduates elementary school and James graduates middle school They will all be at different schools again next year, which makes for a hectic schedule! I am looking forward to the summer, and spending time with family and friends Jim and I celebrated our 15th anniversary in July with a trip somewhere for a few days Next up, our 30-year (how can it possibly be?!) reunion next spring I hope that everyone is able to come!

Mary Louise Talley lives in Raleigh Her daughter, Rainey, is 10 Mary Louise and I ran into each other at a Camp Cheerio mother/daughter weekend in March We had a great time doing activities and bonding with our sweet girls! She’s taught in preschools over the last several years, at Arts Together and Fairmont Methodist Church Prior to having Rainey, she was an elementary art teacher Mary Louise started subbing in Wake County Schools and working in schools by her house, including working in Rainey’s school They enjoy time in the North Carolina beaches and mountains during free time / summers Jen Stocks and family spent spring break in the Bahamas, and she was particularly excited about swimming with the dolphins Her children are eight and 12 She had a new show premiere on TLC this year, I Am Shauna Rae. She’s still loving living in Pittsboro Jamie Brantley Fernandez de Castro and family are still living in sunny Sarasota, Florida Alex has finished his first year at Elon He loved being in North Carolina Nicolas and Tristan will be back at school together this year as a junior and a freshman at Sarasota High Natalie starts middle school She will be going to Sarasota Christian Braden will be a fifth grader It is the first time he’s been alone, with no siblings at school, but he will be just fine Their Doodles are fun and full of energy Miguel and Jamie have been

Charlotte Stephenson Hagman tells us that her twins, Sally and Cat, were turning 11 in June, but they are going on 16! They are busy with softball and martial arts Sally also does musical theatre and Cat does gymnastics Charlotte is her mother-in-law’s primary caregiver since her car accident two years ago, on top of having Multiple Myeloma She also helps out with the girls’ school and Girl Scouts Charlotte says she needs a vacation, and I think we would all agree! Catherine Dalton Feldman is still a busy photographer specializing in high school senior and wedding photography She absolutely loves it! Elie will be a junior at ECU and is turning 21 in August (hard to believe) Dalton is 18 and is heading to N C State University in the fall Catherine and Andy are still going strong!

Rebecca Folline Rhodes still misses our days at SMC After 21 years, she is still with CCM Investment Advisers as regional marketing director in Columbia, South Carolina Their oldest, Mary Deas, is headed to the University of Georgia in the fall They also have James, who will be a sophomore in high school and loves basketball and golf The youngest, Rebecca, is a dancer and will be in the sixth grade Jim and Rebecca have been married for 21 years and look forward to many more She hopes to see everyone at our next reunion! Kasey Waters Amburm, husband Paul, and daughter Grace will be leaving Raleigh and are very excited about a move to Ocracoke! Valerie Van Oosten Cline met Mimi Pinner in N Y C and they saw Jeff Bridges in To Kill a Mockingbird. They shopped and ate and drank like they were 20-something, then paid for it for a week! Her son, Aidan, is in middle school and Caroline is a sassy secondgrader Valerie and Kevin were trying to plan a trip to Napa this summer She says she is looking forward to traveling more and hoping to see more of our beautiful faces! Betsy Harrison recently started a new job with Medela, selling wound vacs She travels a lot for work to Denver and Chicago, but still lives in Virginia Beach, which she wishes was a bit more exciting I ran into Betsy recently and we had a good visit She’s the same old wonderful Betsy and looks fabulous! Ann Akers-Douglas, according to Instagram pics, had the best time with Chrissy Grier Hairston, Julie Thomas Growney, and Rebecca Folline Rhodes! They went to Mexico for their up and coming 50th birthdays She says they pretended they were back in college and re-entry was rough Ann’s oldest is a freshman in college and she wonders “how can this be? We were just there!” She has a senior that is about to leave the nest as well, which only leaves one baby home, a sophomore in high school She would love nothing more to see all of us! Louise Beasley Warenda ’01 Ashley Batts Allen is associate dean of Arts and Sciences at UNC-Pembroke and lives in Angier with her husband and three kids Lauren Talton Daniel, husband Seth, and their six-year-old, Ledger, are enjoying summertime in Carteret County Lauren works as an educator for N C Department Environmental Quality in the Division of Water Resources She loves every minute of her work because she gets to learn about water resource management, along with connecting statewide educators and watershed groups with their own local waterways through outreach programs Lauren coordinates a few programs for water education, including the N C Climate Education Network, N C Watershed Stewardship Network, Wake County Green Schools Partnership, N C Stream Watch, and N C Project WET This work allows Lauren to meet amazing educators as well as address water quality issues statewide Also, she recently received her six-pack captain’s license, and she’s working on obtaining an aquaculture permit to allow her to operate an oyster farm on the White Oak River Mary Catherine Benson Grew’s children are Ann Safrit (4) and Cabot (20 months) It’s happy chaos at her house! Our class has accomplished so much and made so many exciting life changes, this update is maybe our most exciting yet! As far as we go, Kayla is finishing her second and final year as a Teach For America Corps member, where she has been teaching first grade in Eastern North Carolina at KIPP Gaston Primary School in Gaston, and living in nearby Jackson Following the end of the school year, she was pursuing a position in elementary curriculum sales that would allow her to fulfill her childhood dream of moving to New York City where she can hang out with Hayley! When she isn’t helping Kayla apartment hunt, Hayley is working at the same agency that specializes in developing luxury fashion e-commerce sites in an e-commerce strategist role She is looking to potentially find a role in which she can focus more on her UX/

UI skills in NYC , where she currently resides  Since November,  Maggie Collier has been working at QuaverEd, a music, PE, and SEL education software and curriculum company in Nashville, Tennessee, and she was promoted to HR representative in March She will complete her master’s of music, vocal performance, at Belmont University with a recital in June and graduation in August She is excited to have more time to dedicate towards performances and songwriting Kendall Hamilton recently moved from N Y C to Los Angeles, where she’s working in growth marketing at HBO Max She was having so much fun working on her favorite content like Euphoria and House of the Dragon, but of course misses being close to her family and friends on the East Coast! Anna Gray Stallings moved to Winston-Salem in 2021, starting a hospitality job with The Graylyn Estate She is living and learning every day, and wouldn’t change a thing Grayson Rodriguez is a third-year Ph D student in the immunology program at Stanford University Her research in the Garcia Lab involves engineering proteins for cancer and autoimmune disease indications In 2021, she adopted Kitty, a spunky tortoiseshell cat, who is still learning to coexist with Santiago, her two-year-old betta fish Augusta Moran graduated in May with a Juris Doctorate from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law While in school, she was a member of the Restorative Justice Clinic, and through that clinic offered pro bono services to the community and volunteered at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, in Wake County Public Schools, and at Wake Monarch Academy (the Triangle’s first recovery high school) She has loved being back home after going out of state for undergrad, and is excited to begin her professional life in Raleigh after the bar exam in July Sarah Boyce has enjoyed working as a client engagement senior manager at

Wray Ward in Charlotte, but has transitioned to working remotely as she has moved back to Raleigh Rollins Crumpton is getting her master’s of health sciences in physician assistant studies at UNC-Chapel Hill Grier Paulson was recently promoted to project manager and is still working with her best friend, Sarah Boyce, at Wray Ward, an advertising agency in Charlotte Lucy Mae Rascoe  loves living in Charlotte and is working in the human resources department at AGData Maddy Sullivan is tackling the interior design world, working with Shannon Bowman Interiors in Charlotte She lives with  Liddy Blincow  and her new golden doodle, Bee When Liddy isn't watching Bee, she is saving lives and running a tight ship in the oncology unit at Atrium Health Anna Carson Buckthal is thriving in the advertising industry as a senior account coordinator at Union in Charlotte, while also serving on the marketing committee for JDRF International and helping plan the local galas each year After her wedding in 2021,  Morgan Abrue Seidel  moved to Washington state with her husband She recently adopted a puppy, enjoys hiking, and exploring the area Aurelia Monk  is in her third year of medical school at UNC School of Medicine She is currently living in Charlotte, completing her clinical rotations She is very happy to be spending time with patients and exploring the city Taryn Travis has been working and living in Nashville, Tennessee, over the course of the pandemic She is enjoying her time Bailey Ham lives in Washington, D C , where she works as the manager of programs for the Headfirst Companies, running operations for the summer camps division In her free time, Bailey enjoys spending time with friends, exploring D C , and sailing on the Potomac Stephanie Hamilton Passmore  got married April 18, 2020, to her husband, Jeremy They recently moved back to her hometown of Beaufort, North Carolina, 64 Saint Mary’s School | www.sms.edu

to be closer to family to help with their newborn daughter, Lyla Rose Lyla made her arrival on March 29, 2022 Stephanie has also been working on getting her master’s in healthcare administration from UNC-Wilmington and will graduate early next year Abigail Ueland is still loving life in San Francisco She is still working at Meta and is looking to transfer internally to a partnerships or sales team in the near future When she’s not working, she enjoys park days with friends, hiking in Marin, playing in her women’s tennis league, and traveling with family and friends Emma Wason  was set to begin working at Georgetown University in June in development and fundraising for the Georgetown University Medical Center and is excited to be working somewhere that keeps her close to her family in Northern Virginia Moira Barrett is working as a lead technician at an outdoor equipment store in Chicago, where she still resides She spends the majority of her time participating in cycle races and still fitting in some rock climbing Thank you to everyone who sent in updates this year! The Class of 2017 celebrated its first reunion and, from what I heard, remains the same funloving and tight-knit group that I remember graduating with five years ago I am living in northern Lake Tahoe, working as a product engineer for a startup, and loved spending

a lot of time skiing this past winter In July, I moved to New York City and look forward to connecting with my Saint Mary’s friends in the city Elizabeth Bryant graduated from UNCChapel Hill in May 2021 with a degree in graphic design and English literature before moving to Charlotte to work in marketing for Coley Home She absolutely loves her job and working for SMS alum Elizabeth Williams Ellington ’11. She is still painting, but she is mostly focused on her graphic and textile design for work Both of her collaboration lines with LeighDeux have been extended for two more years due to their success! Mackenzie Logan graduated in May with a degree in chemical engineering and minors in math and chemistry She has a job working for Messer Americas in their graduate development program Given the opportunity to serve A Christian Ministry in the national parks this summer, Leann Kelly will be working in Glacier National Park in Montana while leading worship services with team members She says, “I have never been more excited about something and more called by God to do something!” Hannah Ueland graduated from Notre Dame in May of 2021 with majors in pre-med and history and a business economics minor She moved to Chicago last summer, where she works as an associate consultant for Bain & Company Living in Austin, Texas, Ashton Vermillion is loving life, saying, “It truly is the best city on earth!” Always a hard worker, she received a promotion at Oracle and is excited to spend another fun-filled year in Texas She “had the best time at my SMS reunion It was amazing to see all my best friends and to come home!” “It was great to see all my peers

again at my favorite place!” says Hope Voelkel, who just finished her first year of graduate school at East Carolina University, where she studies speech-language pathology  Before she graduates in 2023, she will be completing internships working with adults in an outpatient rehabilitation facility who suffer from traumatic brain injuries, as well as working with medically complex pediatric patients in a private practice, both in Raleigh She is looking forward to the transition to the “real world” and possibly working with her SMS peers, Sylvie Uwineza and Suzanna Wason, fellow future SLPS, a fact she learned at the reunion Virginia Wood graduated from Appalachian State University in December of 2020 (summa cum laude), with a bachelor’s in psychology She was accepted into the graduate program at UNC-Chapel Hill in May of 2021 and expected to graduate with her master’s in education in school counseling in May 2022 She has accepted a school counselor position in a Florida school district, where she will be a part of a new virtual charter school
