Donor Impact Report Fiscal Year 2018
Office of Institutional Advancement
The Mission of Institutional Advancement is to develop lifelong relationships with alumni, families, and friends, and to engage them as committed volunteers and benefactors.
F
iscal year 2018 marked President John “Jack” Neuhauser’s last year on campus. During his 11-year tenure, Jack successfully led the institution through one of the most challenging financial crises in recent memory while dramatically improving academic standing, the student experience, and campus facilities. Jack’s years of dedication and accomplishments were recognized through a series of farewell receptions held throughout New England and Naples, Florida. These receptions not only commemorated Jack’s time at Saint Michael’s, but also culminated in the establishment of the John J. Neuhauser Fund for Innovation and Research. Donors came together to raise $1 million for the fund, which will support undergraduate student research and innovative programming.

Including the funds raised to honor Jack Neuhauser, I am pleased to announce that we surpassed our fundraising goal, raising a total of $3,853,343 overall. Additionally, we reached our goal of 20% alumni participation with a total of 3,973 undergraduate alumni donors. As we look to the next fiscal year, I am confident that together we can continue to propel Saint Michael’s forward. From the celebration of President Neuhauser’s tenure, to welcoming Dr. D. E. Lorraine Sterritt to the Saint Michael’s family, 2018 was a year filled with change and excitement.
The John J. Neuhauser Fund for Innovation and Research The Neuhauser Fund honors the former president’s commitment to undergraduate student research and increased academic rigor over the past 10 years. This fund will afford students the opportunity to do groundbreaking work with their faculty mentors. Additionally, this fund is designed to equip future presidents with muchneeded funds to bring ideas to life. This effort will have a direct and lasting impact on the students, faculty, and staff of Saint Michael’s College.
“Summer research has been one of the best experiences I’ve had at St. Mike’s. It allowed me to explore my creativity in two disciplines I love: music and Conor J. Macias ’19 Music and Psychology major
psychology. The experience I gained from this project has made me reflect on pursuing a career in music therapy.” -Conor J. Macias ’19

“ Receiving a scholarship has allowed me to make the most of my education. When I started at St. Mike’s, I felt writing was my only option for a career, but as I’ve become more involved on campus, I have been able to step outside my comfort zone and learn new skills in media production. From being in the honors program to learning photography and videography through my on-campus job, I have been able to pave my own path while maintaining my passion for writing as an English major. I am honored that St. Mike’s recognized my potential and, through scholarships, made it possible for me to be a Purple Knight.” - Danielle R. Joubert ’20
Planned Giving Legacy Dr. Frederick Barrett ’43, like many other Saint Michael’s graduates, received financial aid that made his education possible. In a letter to Barrett’s mother in 1943, Father Daniel Lyons wrote, “We realize only too well the hardships and inconvenience you suffered in keeping Fred at Saint Michael’s…We were happy to do our bit in helping a good cause along...Perhaps, when Fred is well-established, he might remember Saint Michael’s in some way.” 50 years later, after retiring from a successful medical practice, Dr. Barrett and his wife, Elizabeth, marked the occasion by establishing a scholarship through their estate.

This year, the Barretts’ legacy gift was realized. It will provide assistance to students for generations to come, opening the door to a Saint Michael’s education.
