I Like St. Mike’s.

There’s quite a lot to like about Saint Michael’s College. Professors who understand your potential and inspire you to achieve your best. Rich opportunities to do real research, valuable internships, and perspective-changing volunteer experience. And that’s just the academic side. As a four-year residential college, St. Mike’s is a vibrant community – close-knit, genuine, supportive – where the bonds among students, faculty, and staff are forged early and are often lifelong. We believe that above all, a college experience should foster the growth of the human spirit, building character as much as intellect. Like our Edmundite founders, our students are thinkers and explorers, passionate about service and eager to lend their talents to improving the world. Like St. Mike’s? We’re pretty sure you’re going to love it.

According to a 2015 Gallup-Purdue survey, St. Mike’s alumni were employed full-time at higher rates than alumni from the four comparison groups.

SAINT MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

it’s not just about what you learn, it’s about learning

ilike.smcvt.edu

Get your feet wet exploring issues of water quality in Vermont streams. Travel to Cuba to examine coral reef ecology. Or visit the famed British city of Bath to learn about British literary history. At St. Mike’s, you’ll be learning not only on campus, but out in the world, too.

Real life. Real learning. Studies show that undergraduate research improves problem-solving skills, enhances the ability to work with a team, and increases self-confidence. That’s why Saint Michael’s offers such a rich array of research opportunities. You could compete for a slot in our summer research program, where students immerse themselves in eight- to 10-week projects, such as investigating water quality in local streams or writing a novel in conjunction with faculty mentors. Or you can sign on as a research assistant during the school year in biology, psychology, economics, or mathematics. Regardless, you’ll likely end up presenting your work at a national conference or being published in an academic journal, an uncommon opportunity for undergraduate college students. Real-world experience is so important at St. Mike’s that it’s a graduation requirement. It’s not limited to research, either. Internship options abound, whether at local banks and marketing firms or international posts. Business majors can pitch their entrepreneurial business ideas at the annual LaunchVT competition. And senior capstone projects often influence career and graduate school decisions.

Who Inspires you? College should inspire, challenge and motivate you to do your best. Our faculty are experts in their fields who love nothing more than sharing their experience with students. They might inspire you to try something new, like a collaborative research project or a weekly music show on WWPV, the campus radio station. And they’ll always be happy to advise you on your future plans, whether it’s next semester’s courses, where you might study abroad, or what career suits you best. More importantly, their doors are always open to you. It’s not unusual to meet professors for coffee at Einstein Bros. Bagels in the Dion Center, or to be invited to their homes for dinner. They attend local fundraisers and can be found on the sidelines of athletic games. No doubt, our faculty like St. Mike’s too.

St. Mike’s has plenty to wrap your brain around.

Saint Michael’s is also an ideal place to raise your intellect. Our core curriculum allows you to explore new subjects and ideas in addition to your major. It ensures that you have a strong foundation in the major disciplines, from math and science to philosophy and art, and teaches you what it means to contribute to the common good as a concerned and thoughtful citizen. It’s no coincidence that Saint Michael’s is a Phi Beta Kappa institution – an honor shared with only 10 percent of colleges and universities nationwide. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most recognized academic honor society.

Burlington, Vermont, is home to all kinds of commerce, from innovative startups to such major corporations as Ben & Jerry’s, Burton Snowboards, IBM, and Dealer.com. Getting downtown takes just 10 minutes, and here’s the best part: thanks to city bus passes for every student, the trip is absolutely free.

A vibrant downtown surrounded by the great outdoors. Place any town on the shores of Lake Champlain and surround it with mountains and you’d have a special place. Add the shops, restaurants, and music venues of downtown Burlington and you have a place some people never want to leave. No wonder our town boasts five colleges – the Princeton Review calls Burlington one of the best college towns in the country. And pollsters from coast to coast consistently rank it among the nation’s healthiest, happiest communities. It’s also an ideal place to land an internship with a local business, get into art at an up-and-coming gallery, or volunteer for dozens of great causes in the surrounding area. And then there’s the great outdoors. Students who have never even seen a mountain are soon zipping down Smugglers’ Notch on skis and snowboards. The price for a student season pass? Just a small service fee, plus a healthy sense of adventure.

This weekend I’m headed to: smcvt.edu/location

How will you make it yours? Live music. Poetry slam. Guest speakers. Rugby. Tutoring elementary school students. Intramural and varsity games. Holiday parties. Ski trips. Retreats. Theater performances. And our famous late-night cookouts on the quad. Just another week at St. Mike’s. When our students aren’t in class, studying, or careening down a mountain, you’ll find them lining up for concerts at Turtle Underground, running on the nature trails, heading to Montreal for a Diversity Coalition trip, or chowing down at Alliot Dining Hall celebrations. (Our advice: don’t miss Thanksgiving.) If the spirit moves you, sing in the choir, learn liturgical dance, join student faith groups like VITA, go on a LEAP retreat, or, of course, attend Mass. Catholic or not, everyone is welcome. Want traditions? The holidays arrive with lights in the huge trees all across campus. Our annual Spring Concert brings artists like Macklemore to campus. And no one misses Rail Jam – an all-night mix of snowboard and ski tricks on a massive mound of snow. Some say having more things to do leads directly to happiness. Clearly, we couldn’t agree more.

Everyone who goes to St. Mike’s lives on campus – housing is 100 percent guaranteed for all four years. New in fall 2016 will be a “green” residence hall joining the new Dion Family Student Center and Quad Commons which added more than 50 new rooms and four stories of living space, including a cafe, digital lounge, game room, and fitness center. Whether in classic first-year dorms or suites, singles, honors housing, or townhouses around campus, you’ll find your place to call home.

Socially aware, actively involved. Our largest student organization isn’t related to sports or politics or skiing. At St. Mike’s, 70 percent of students rally around one idea so simple, it’s radical: helping people. When they get behind a service project, St. Mike’s students are relentless. As education professor Valerie Bang-Jensen observes, “One of the things that amazes me is how motivated St. Mike’s students are in applying themselves to a cause. No risk is too large.” You can build a house. Provide disaster relief. Help rescued animals. Tutor or mentor young students. You could even throw a “prom” for senior citizens in the community. Through our Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (MOVE) and other service organizations, the opportunities are endless.

In the true Edmundite tradition, our Edmundite Center for Peace and Justice encourages social awareness through lectures, events, and our Amnesty International chapter. (We even have a Peace and Justice minor.) Green Up SMC focuses on environmental issues. And our Fire and Rescue teams are staffed entirely by student volunteers, serving as a model for college emergency services nationwide.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try kayaking, ice climbing, hiking, backcountry skiing, or rock climbing with St. Mike’s pioneering Adventure Sports Center. It’s one of the coolest (and sometimes coldest) ways to make the most of our amazing location. And our ski/snowboarding pass program with Smugglers’ Notch will have you on the slopes during your downtime all season long (for just a small service fee). Even if you’ve never seen snow before. The Adventure Sports Center will even hook you up with any equipment you might need. If you’re ready to take your adventures to the next level, aim to become one of the select students who are chosen each year to train as Adventure Sport instructors. As graduates, many find rewarding careers as outdoor leaders, instructors, and guides.

Get your passport ready. Where will St. Mike’s take you? About 30 percent of St. Mike’s students study abroad. Will you be one of them? Choose from more than 100 programs across four categories: language programs, university liberal studies courses, internship programs, and field study programs. In case you’d rather stay a little closer to home, we also have study programs in D.C., Los Angeles, and the Lakota Nation in South Dakota. Semester, summer, and winter programs are available to work with your specific goals and course schedule. And we have special scholarships available for certain destinations and programs.

How do St. Mike’s students find success with employers and graduate schools? One word: internships. Our students are in demand for competitive internship programs. Recently, students have interned with Burlington International Airport, Burton, Ben & Jerry’s, Keurig Green Mountain, the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, the National Weather Service, and Morgan Stanley.
