Our diversity reflects the cultures and impressively broad range of practitioners and students within the TESOL field. Our graduate students hail from all over the country, and all over the world. The global perspectives of our students are truly remarkable—they are part of what makes Saint Michael’s an inspiring place to learn. On our campus, students from throughout the United States interact daily with students from Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, and the Middle East. What’s more, the city of Burlington ranks high among U.S. small cities for its percentage of speakers of other languages. In the last decade or so, resettlement programs

have brought thousands of political and economic refugees to Vermont. With over 50 different languages spoken in the Burlington School District, our TESOL graduate students have the unique opportunity to apply their skills with English learners from around the world, right in our own backyard. After graduation, Saint Michael’s TESOL graduates can choose to work in the United States or in another country. Graduates can be found teaching in schools and universities, running institutions or organizations, pursuing doctoral degrees, or engaged in research.

HELPING YOU GET HERE

FINANCIAL AID At Saint Michael’s, the value of your education far exceeds the cost. Our small-school intimacy will challenge, empower, and nurture you at a price that is less than that of comparable institutions. At Saint Michael’s College, we do all we can to make graduate school affordable for you. We do not impose the numerous additional fees that you’ll find at other schools, such as course credit fees, health fees*, student fees, technology fees, or parking fees. About 30% of our graduate students seek some form of financial aid. There are two loan programs available for graduate study: the Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan and the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS loan. All aid recipients must apply for financial aid each year by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a Saint Michael’s College Graduate Financial Aid Application which is available on our website at the Student Financial Services Forms page. * Summer program does not include health insurance.

8

Financial aid in the form of loans is offered on the basis of financial need and many factors are considered. Graduate students need to be accepted into a degree program in order to be offered financial aid, and a copy of your letter of acceptance will be required to process aid. Please note that conditional acceptance and Graduate Certificate Program acceptance do not meet this requirement. Applicants must be full-time students. A graduate student also must be enrolled enrolled in at least 6 credits to be considered for these aid programs. To retain federal loans you need to have at least a “B” average or its equivalent, and be making good progress toward graduation from the program. For summer sessions, you must also complete the additional one-page form available online at the Student Financial Services Forms page, www.smcvt.edu/sfs.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP The TESOL Graduate Program offers a Graduate Assistantship for students who seek more involvement in the TESOL Department in exchange for financial aid, and who have been at least one semester in the program. Graduate Assistants will support the TESOL Department with administrative tasks, while gaining invaluable experience and skills. As only one assistantship is offered by the Program each year, the process is competitive. Applications for the Graduate Assistantship can be made through the TESOL Program Office. For more information, please contact tesol@smcvt.edu. YELLOW RIBBON SCHOLARSHIP Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, the Department of Veteran Affairs will cover veterans’ tuition for graduate study at participating institutions, including Saint Michael’s. There are some restrictions, however, so we encourage you to contact your Department of Veteran Affairs for application information and forms.

Vermont Fun Fact: Vermont is the largest producer of Maple Syrup in the US and produces over 500,000 gallons of syrup a year.

RICHARD YORKEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Fund is established in memory of Richard C. Yorkey to annually recognize outstanding students who reflect the criteria of the Richard Yorkey Award. After 23 years in Beirut, Lebanon, and a dozen years at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, Dick culminated his distinguished lifetime teaching career at Saint Michael’s College, remaining active at the Applied Linguistics Department (formerly School of International Studies) right up until his death in November 1998. Dick was known and loved for his genuine interest in his students as individuals. Beyond his obvious interest in giving them the most enlightening and enjoyable of experiences in their classroom learning, Dick was dedicated to aspects of learning which result in building of strong character. Distributions shall be made annually to provide financial assistance to one or more students from the Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) graduate program. The Yorkey Award fund will be used as a scholarship for tuition and fees to augment the yearly ALD financial aid contribution to AMIDEAST, with the condition that the selected scholarship student comes to Saint Michael’s College to study in the MATESOL program.

MATESOL PATHWAY PROGRAM If you have not achieved the minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores, you may still be qualified for our MATESOL Pathway Program. If your English is not yet strong enough to embark on the full-time program, but your application is otherwise acceptable, Saint Michael’s may offer you conditional admittance. See our Programs for more information about the Pathway program. HOUSING Limited on-campus housing is available for international graduate students and ranges from $500-$650/month. FINANCIAL AID To receive aid from the US government, you must be a citizen or permanent resident (Green Card holder) of the United States. Students living outside the US should contact their local Education USA Advising Center for information about scholarship opportunities.

ENROLLMENT STATUS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS In most cases, an international student must be enrolled full-time (9 graduate credits) to maintain their visa status. F-1 or J-1 visa holders must attend classes on a full time basis to remain “in status.” Visitor/tourist visa holders may not attend classes. DEPOSIT International graduate students are required to make a $500 deposit to confirm their enrollment in the program. This deposit is refundable (minus a $100 processing fee) in the event that a visa is denied. The deposit amount will be applied to the student’s tuition.

Saint Michael’s College offers a pre-approved 18-credit series of courses toward this qualification. Successful completers of this coursework and the associated practicum will be recommended by Saint Michael’s College for the PK-12 ELL Endorsement. Students will need to pass the Praxis II Exam (ELL) before they can be recommended for endorsement.

SUMMER TESOL / TEFL CERTIFICATE

The Graduate Certificate in TESOL is an option within the TESOL program for students who do not wish to pursue a Master’s Degree or who have special training objectives in mind.

Obtaining your certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) / Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) isn’t just a great way to help adults acquire English language skills, it’s a passport to the world. Our Summer TESOL /TEFL Certificate Program offers an intensive four-week, summer course of study designed to prepare you for teaching English to nonnative speakers abroad or in in the U.S.

The 120-hour program includes a 30-hour practicum with at least six hours teaching in a multilingual classroom. With the TESOL Certificate, you can earn four undergraduate credits and/or six credits advance standing* toward your Saint Michael’s Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (MATESOL). Upon successful completion of the program, each student receives a formal letter reflecting his or her strengths in coursework and teaching. This serves as a reference for future teaching positions. Students may also use the job listings we post for positions available around the world. Graduates are now working in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. *Successful completion of the Summer TESOL/TEFL Certificate program will grant four undergraduate credits to current Saint Michael’s College students, and completion of a capstone paper will grant up to six credits of advance standing toward Saint Michael’s MATESOL program.
