Honoring

President Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., H ’24 Magis Award

Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., H ’24, is the 22nd president of Saint Peter’s University, the longest-serving president in the University’s history. He began his term as the first lay president in 2007 and has had a distinguished tenure marked by transformative leadership, unwavering dedication and a fierce commitment to academic excellence and the Jesuit mission.

During his time as president he guided the University through a period of growth, innovation and unparalleled progress. Notable institutional triumphs include the achievement of university status and national recognition by U.S. News & World Report, the American Council on Education (ACE) and Excelencia in Education, among others.

On the academic front, his tenure saw the strategic expansion of academic programs resulting in a 50 percent increase in graduate students, the initiation of the institution’s first doctoral programs and the establishment of three of the four schools at the University including the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, the School of Nursing and the Caulfield School of Education.

In terms of the physical campus, he oversaw the construction of the Mac Mahon Student Center, Panepinto Hall, the creation of the Run Baby Run Arena, the addition of the Digital Research Commons in the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Library and the creation of the STEM Empowerment Center, among many other projects.

Dr. Cornacchia served as a brand champion when the University was thrust into the national and international spotlight following the historic run of the men’s basketball team to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament in 2022. He also successfully navigated the institution through the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on the health and safety of the community as well as the continuity of education.

In addition, Dr. Cornacchia has set fundraising records, securing $64.7 million for Students at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s University in 2014. The University’s current campaign, Peacocks Rise: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s University, had raised more than $79 million as of December 2023, already surpassing

the original goal and breaking previous records. Beyond private fundraising success, the University also secured more than $25 million in federal grants during Dr. Cornacchia’s tenure.

Dr. Cornacchia attended Fordham University and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1976, a master’s degree in political science in 1979 and a Ph.D. in political science in 1985. Prior to becoming president of Saint Peter’s and after 20 years of teaching at the University, Dr. Cornacchia served as academic dean and subsequently as provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Dr. Cornacchia and his wife, AnnMarie, have two daughters, Lauren and Katherine, and three grandchildren, Ava, Zachary and Maximilian.

TRANSFORMATIVE PRESIDENCY

A look at the extraordinary progress Saint Peter’s University achieved over the past 17 years under the leadership of Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the first lay leader and longest serving president in the institution’s history.

2007

Advancing Growth and Academic Excellence

The School of Nursing is established. Over the next 17 years, Saint Peter’s expands its undergraduate and graduate programs, initiates doctoral programs and establishes the Caulfield School of Education and the Frank J. Guarini School of Business. Today, the University is a destination for learners seeking to excel in business, data science, health sciences, STEM, education and more.

Vision 2015

2009

Planning for the Future

VISION 2015, the first of three community-wide strategic plans put into operation during the Cornacchia presidency, is introduced in 2009.

VISION 2015 is the catalyst for growth and innovation that transforms Saint Peter’s into a dynamic university that attracts more students, new resources and community partnerships. The strategic plans that follow, Pathways to Distinction (2015-2020) and Vitality, Value and Viability (2021-2024) continue to capitalize on strengths and opportunities to advance the University and its mission to serve promising students.

Campus Transformation is publicly launched. The centerpiece of the campaign, the Mac Mahon Student Center, opens in 2013, creating a hub for the University community to grow, learn and foster lifelong

2012

Attaining University Status

Saint Peter’s is elevated to university status, an achievement that recognizes the growth and evolution from a liberal arts undergraduate college to a master’s and doctoral degreegranting institution.

2013

National Recognition Soars

Saint Peter’s continues to earn national recognition from U.S. News & World Report, the American Council on Education (ACE), Money magazine, Princeton Review Green Colleges, Carnegie Community Engagement Classification and Excelencia in Education, among others. Moreover, the University has been consistently recognized for transformation and its excellence in social mobility during the Cornacchia presidency.

4 HEARTS & MINDS

2016

Surge in Federal Grants

Saint Peter’s is the recipient of the $3.8 million SURGE (STEM Undergraduate Retention and Graduation Empowerment) grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the largest federal grant awarded to the University at the time. Throughout the tenure of the Cornacchia presidency, Saint Peter’s was awarded more than $32 million in federal grants that supported academic excellence, STEM initiatives, career opportunities, student success and more.

2020-2024

Succession of Campus Investments

Capitalizing on the momentum of Students at the Center, the silent phase of a new comprehensive campaign (later named Peacocks Rise) begins in 2017. Between 2020–2024 the University unveils a succession of new and renovated facilities.

This includes the opening of Run Baby Run Arena (launched with a lead gift from Thomas P. Mac Mahon ’68); the O’Toole Library Digital Research Commons (funded by the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Foundation and George I. Alden Trust); Panepinto Hall (a new residence hall named in honor of Joseph A. Panepinto Esq. ’66 for his philanthropic generosity to Saint Peter’s); and the James J. Loughlin ’64 Data Science Center (established with a gift from James and Dottie Loughlin).

2018

Mission Reaffirmed

Guided by the Ignatian principle to “find God in all things,” the University community successfully concludes the year-long Mission Examen, a self-study conducted by every institution in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Following submission of the self-study, the superior general of the Society of Jesus resoundingly reaffirmed Saint Peter’s Jesuit and Catholic identity.

2021

Celebrating the Sesquicentennial

Saint Peter’s kicks off its Sesquicentennial, which spans the 2021-2022 academic year. Opportunity for Generations is the theme chosen to celebrate the 150th anniversary to honor the University’s legacy of welcoming students from virtually every background throughout its history.

2022

Showing the World What Peacocks Can Do

The Saint Peter’s men’s basketball team captures the hearts and minds of the nation, becoming the first No. 15 seed to reach the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. The epic tourney performance put the Peacocks and Saint Peter’s on the map. Two years later, the Peacocks clinch their second MAAC title in three years and appear in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

2024

Peacocks Rise Concludes

The second capital campaign of the Cornacchia presidency, Peacocks Rise, publicly launches in 2022 with $70 million raised, surpassing the record $64.7 million finish for Students at the Center. Peacocks Rise ends in triumph, crushing its goal of $75 million. Dr. Cornacchia holds the distinction of leading the two largest and most successful fundraising campaigns in Saint Peter’s history.

The Sodality of the Children of Mary of Saint Teresa

The Teresians are joyfully celebrating their 151st anniversary and have proudly supported Saint Peter’s throughout all these years.

As Honorary Alumni, we wish to extend our sincerest congratulations to this year’s honoree:

The Sodality of the Children of Mary of Saint Teresa, the “Teresians,” was formed in 1873 in response to an appeal from Father Victor Beaudevin, S.J., Rector of St. Peter’s Parish Jersey City to assist in working with the poor. The women collected and distributed clothing and replenished linens and vestments for the parish and the Jesuit missions. The Teresians involvement with Saint Peter’s University was reinforced in 1931 when the Sodalists contributed $30,000 to build the Chapel in Gannon Hall.

Several years ago, the Teresians donated the Nativity Creche which stands outside the Chapel during the Christmas season. Annually we present donations of $10,000 to the Development Fund, and in recent years to support the Food Kitchen. The Teresians remain a Sodality of Catholic women that seeks to further the spiritual growth of its members and to support the mission of Saint Peter’s University and the Society of Jesus.

Saint Peter’s University is a very special place. Everyone works tirelessly to ensure our students can live, learn and develop in a challenging and nurturing environment.

The many goals I set out to achieve for the University when I began my presidency in 2007 have been accomplished. Yet none of it would have been possible without the profound generosity and dedication of alumni, friends, faculty, staff and administrators. I could not be more proud of our achievements, nor more grateful for this extraordinary community.

It has been a privilege to serve Saint Peter’s for more than 40 years and I will always cherish the many relationships I’ve made.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making these many years a most memorable journey.

Sincerely,

Gene, Your dedication inspires us! Congratulations and thank you for your many years of leadership and service to Saint Peter’s University!
