Ecotect Assignment Barrio 2: Poble Nou, Besos, La Pau _The task was to use the Ecotect as an environmental analysis tool to calculate some basic factors which may help to design a sustainable environment friendly urban environment. _ The calculation was performed in a small part of the given barrio to reduce calculation time. _ The barrio was calculated in terms of the following factors: ‐ Displaying of Shadows and Overshadowing (simple shadow diagrams, shadow range diagrams, etc) ‐ Solar Analysis (on large surfaces, on subdivided surfaces, on a grid) ‐ Spatial Visibility Analysis and Spatial Visibility Analysis and _Wind analysis.

The Process_ _Importing the rhino file _ a small area of the barrio was chosen in the rhino file and the it was a small area of the barrio was chosen in the rhino file and the it was exported as a DXF file. _ the dxf file was dragged in ecotect, the zone name was selected by the layer original name, (as our rhino model was in mm so the scale was not changed) and then it was opened as new.

_ after having the file in ecotect, first we had to run the command “ merge coincident triangles” and then “merge coincident polygons” to get a clear and lighter model to work on. _ after importing the file the climate data for Barcelona Spain was chosen.

_ two different material with two different colors were chosen for the buildings and the ground buildings and the ground. _ after importing the file the climate data for Barcelona Spain was loaded To get the longitude and lattitude.

_ Display of Shadow and over shadowing _simple Shadow diagram

Daily Sunpath _1st the shadow pattern was viewed in varying time with a specific date of 1st April with the Daily Sun Path Diagram

Annual Sunpath _then the Annual Sunpath diagram was observed in different days of the months which was more expressed in the animation option. p p

Shadow range Diagram Shadow range Diagram _the shadow range option was applied to get the overall view of the shifting shadow pattern at a time. _ the shadow range can be seen with varying time and with varying months.

Shadow range Diagram _the shadow becomes darker from day to night. _ and the shadow becomes more wider with the cange of month. _ the shadow is smaller when the sun is in higher position and its wider th h d i ll h th i i hi h iti d it id when the sun is in lower position.

shadow range diagram in April_ _In April the shadow range becomes shorter than the colder months. In April the shadow range becomes shorter than the colder months

shadow range diagram in September shadow range diagram in September_ _In september the shadow range becomes more longer and spreading than the warmer months of the year because of the sun position.

Sunpath Diagram _this diagram is used to show the strength of the radiation by the sun varying with its movement through the year its movement through the year. _ As it can be seen in the scale, its most intense in yellow parts and goes down from orange to red to blue. The intensity is well described by the gradiation in the scale.

_ Solar Analysis _on Large Surfaces _ some surfaces are tagged to get the shadow only on that surafaces some surfaces are tagged to get the shadow only on that surafaces during during different times of a day. _ the following images are showing the shadow pattern only on the tagged surfaces in two different times of a day: at 9 am and 5pm in 1st April. _ from this analysis we can know which surface remains more cooler throughout the day throughout the day.

Shadow pattern at 9 am on 1st April

Shadow pattern at 5 pm on 1st April

_ Solar Analysis _on Large Surfaces

_to to get the different amount solar radiation in different facades, some get the different amount solar radiation in different facades, some walls were chosen. Then we put the SOLAR ANALYSIS command under calculation. _ this process is very useful to compare the orientation of one surface to another to determine the most comfortable one.

_Solar Analysis on Subdivided Surfaces

_ to get the solar analysis on the surface of the buildings, the selected surfaces were subdivided into a grid surface, after checking Surface Normals. then we ran the solar analysis command using the Cumulative Analysis only for the selected walls. _ this is a very usefull process of getting the overall solar radiation on facades to place solar panels. _ by this the orientation of the f d can be facades b also l determined d t i d even before building.

_Solar Analysis using an Analysis Grid

_Solar Analysis is done by using an Analysis Grid. The analysis grid was modified manually to get a 3d 3d analysis. l i _the images are showing the variation in solar radiation with varying heights in between the buildings. _ the radiation is getting higher with the height. _ the radiation in spaces right beside the buildings are less than the spaces far from the buildings.

_Spatial Visibility Analysis the visibility analysis was done addressing two issues: _ analysis of a selected surface using an analysis grid. _ analysis of access to views through the windows of a building. _Spatial Visibility Analysis using an Analysis Grid for a selected surface _ this process is useful to get the possible visual accesses towards a particular this process is useful to get the possible visual accesses towards a particular façade or a building in a particular site.

_this image is showing the changing values of visibility of each points of the contour with the variation in color in relation with the scale.

_ Visibility Analysis through windows using a Grid inside a building _ this process is useful to determine the number and position of windows for getting particular views. _ one building of our barrio was chosen with its windows. The windows were drawn by pressing “Insert” command. the window was then arrayed in y and z direction to get the position of the windows on the whole façade.

_ an analysis grid was made inside the building to get the changing amount of visibility from the façade in front of the windows.

_Wind Analysis _ wind analysis is important to Locate the high and low speed areas within a barrio. barrio _ this can help us to determine the orientation of a new building in a site surrounded by existing buildings in terms of micro climate. climate _ this can be also potentially used to harness wind energy by locating high speed area _ we created a 3d analysis grid to have enough space to perform the wind analysis. _ for this we had to adjust the “cfd cell blockages” by selecting the option “covered in Z” _ we loaded winair data and then we did the calculation by clicking load output file.

_Analyzing graph for Prevailing Winds _ a wind graph is made for the barrio to get the frequency and wind speed for a selected period. The lighter area represents more hour for a specific wind speed. d
