D ESIGN INTENT The student welcome center is a building that will respond to the site and its users. It will accommodate to the weather and the suns path in order to create a comfortable atmosphere. The intent of the design is to encourage interaction between all the users. These users are; students, staff and guests (speakers, walk ins and parents). In order to achieve this the program spaces must be accommodated in a way to ensure that the circulation from the users connect with each other at some point. The best way to accomplish this is by having a compact building that allows for the different spaces to be adjacent to each other. There also needs to be a main circulation space between these areas as well as the spaces connected to each other. The design of the interior is to keep the circulation moving. users have multiple ways to access each main space. the intent is to allow users to move and experience not only the spaces button also their environment From the program analysis it is clear that certain areas will not always be in use, this needs to be used as an advantage since the space is the auditorium and the space is large.due to the building being compact and the spaces being adjacent to each other, this gives the opportunity to enlarge a space temporarily. An example is the gallery may be extended into the auditorium.

D EFINE ISSUES Even though the current location for newschool is the next block To the proposed site there are Obvious conditions that make the location problematic. Based on past experiences, the urban population in the area tend to cause problems with individuals passing by. This issue brings up safety concerns especially when it involves students being in the area at night. Throughout the day it is also an issue and even though there is security there is a need for a barrier to prevent the need of action from the security. Another solution is to have a compact building . A different issue that comes up is the noise pollution and traffic issues. Mainly these issues come hand in hand and they come from the south side of the side, f st. these issues cannot be faced head on and the program has to accommodate in order to solve the issue. This can be addressed by moving the program spaces that require the quietest space to a different area in the site. An example is the auditorium which will host speakers being far away from the south side.

ABOUT THE SITE The location of the site is in san diego, ca. It is in east village, on F st and Park Blvd. The site is facing the north campus of NewSchool and is a block away from another school that is still in contruction. On the northwestern side of the site many of the city's transiants interact. The west side of the site is along the trolley and the south side is along the main street coming from a freeway. This location is very controversial, both in its P HOTOGRAP H BY DANIEL RODRIGUEZ location and in the surrounding pedestrians.on two sides of the site there is very littletraffice compared to the south and west where there is heavy traffic.with two campuses close by the area is largely occupied by students along with the residents and the area is also know for the transiants. ABOUT THE IMAGE The image can be interpreted many different ways, my observations led me to the conclusion that this image, like the site is controversial. The first obvious observation is that this image can be seen as sad however, there have also been happy memories here. Overall the image is simple and clean yet because of its centext it is quite complex. The image feels open yet taking a closer look it is surrounded by a wall of trees than can also give privacy to this large area. The last observation and the inspiration to the wall is the difference in natures geometry and manmade geometry.

Tuna museum nsad | winter 2015

sairah Sanchez - Torres 18

The tuna Museum project is Located in san Diego ca, tuna Harbor. This area Is highly visited by Tourists and Locals due to the Statues and Memoires for the Us navy. The purpose of The museum, However, is to Show the history Of san diego’s tuna Fishing industry. This site, Although it Focuses on the navy, is also shared with the fishermen of san diego. The idea behind the building is to create a flow of circulation by leading the visitors through a esignated path. In order to achieve that the path was turned into a ramp that flows throughout the uilding. The program followsthe path in the interior side allowing all of san diego’s viewsto be see n from very point on the ramp. While the rooms for program are solid the circulation ramp is not. It is enveloped in a material that llows for the natural elements to penetrate. This means that while the ramp is located on the exterior xtremeties of the building and is open, it is still considiered to interior space. The building is also elevated, this does not disruptthe activities of pedestrians. They can enjoy the shade hat the building provides on a sunny day, or simply carry on with their activites like walking or running nder the building.

The passive house nsad | spring 2014

sairah Sanchez - Torres 24

This house is designed to work on a great part on passive cooling techniques. The goal was to create an environment where the individuals living in the space experience a situation of desirable comfort. It also aims beauty through simplicity and efficiency. The natural lighting in the building is pleasing to the eyes and body. The structure is long and skinny giving it a high advantage over the usual structure; natural light fills the indoor. The building is strategically facing south this way getting the most out of the sun using specific techniques to avoid the worst of it as well. A trellis surrounds the west and south sides minimizing the amount of light that enters the building during summer time. The trellis allows for vibrant green life to grow and expand throughout it as it provides evaporative cooling for the building and shade for the lower windows. More sunlight filters into the building during the wintertime welcoming warmth in the structure. The southern wall is a thermal mass that absorbs the excess heat and helps moderate sensible heat. The house has three wall heights at the south side the last being the highest and the front one being the lowest. The back walls rise higher than the first to make space for clearstory windows which are tucked close under the roof. These are higher than the trellis making the illumination of the building more pleasant. The roof has an overhang on all three wall heights extending on the southern and western sides sharing shade to the clearstory windows to allow more sunlight in winter and less in the summer relatively.

Natural ventilation was the other major strategy the design focuses on. The building has nine lower windows on the south wall, six reflecting across on the north wall, and the clearstory windows facing south on both taller walls behind the main one. The design is very simple, but very effective. The airflow is continuous which brings a fresh feeling to the individuals on the inside. Stack and cross ventilation are in action due to the nicely located windows. Air comes in through the long wall of windows and goes out after flowing around in the main living areas either right across at the same level, or goes up through the clearstory windows. By introducing stack ventilation into the design it gave opportunity for areas under the roof overhang where the hot air accumulating on the indoor can escape. The last technique in action in The Passive House is the use of buffer zones. Trees where “grown to bring shade into the picture. By controlling the surrounding (immediate) environment, the use of evaporative cooling can be more productive than just using the trellis. Three tall trees where planted right next to house on the west side to absorb light and filter it into the building. This avoids the brutal afternoon sun of projecting more directly. The use of a lawn was not considered because of the amounts of water it would require. The Passive House was designed focusing on passive cooling techniques. The oportunities resulted in a beautiful home that aims for the individual’s comfort zone in sensible heat, ventilation, and natural lighting.

3DS REND ERINGS NSAD | WINTER 2015

sairah Sanchez - Torres 40

These particular rederings were produced in 3DS Max. The design is of a spacious studio with double height ceilings. The floor plan is open and allows for the space to feel larger than it is. The bedroom area is lifted off of the living space in order to seperate the private from public areas. In addition to the open floor plan contributing to the appearance of the larger space, the transparency of the studio furthers this illusion. The inspiration for the design was from a personal idea of what an ideal studio would be. The stuidio was created using Revit and imported into 3DS Max. There are two distinct types; reaslistic and artistic renderings. The renderings were taken form 3DS and edited in photoshop to either add finishing touches to the realistic appearance or to create an artictic version.

I would like to say thank you to whomever has reviewed my portfolio. It has taken a long time and effort to produce these works and am glad to be able to share them with you. This portfolio contains most of my earliest work to some of my most recent. It contains where my skills began to where they are still developing ,and in this transtition you can see that I have the ability to grow not only in design but as well as in production. I hope that you have enjoyed the journey of my work through the years and are intrested in what I am capable of. Once again I would like to thank you and hope to speak with you soon.
