Mermaid Beach Communal Artist Hub Third Place | Weave | Interactive | Communal | Retail
01
Location: Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast
The design intent of this project is to integrate retail focused site with a range of communal, artistic and co-working spaces and events such as community events, functions. exhibition, workshops, offices, co-working spaces, with mixed-use spaces that focus on bringing people together. Implementing the design principles developed to integrate, connect and activate in-between spaces and buildings on site and incorporating the use of sustainable materials. The copper modules were to act as an interactive beacon of way-finding in and around Mermaid Beach. During site analysis stage vacant lots were identified and community hub, co-lab offices and the workshop were proposed. Access was then determined from the existing liminal spaces and an overhead path was introduced to connect the viewing modules.

Southport Makers Workshop Landscape Urbanism | Fragmentation | Historical Character
02 Location: Southport, Gold Coast
The design and the form is inspired by Barnacles from the Greater Burleigh Heads. The brief was to create an interactive sculptural building that captures imagination that includes dramatic internal and external spaces with the element of surprise. The key identity that shaped the building is the clustering formation of the barnacle. It created an angular facade and created raised spaces, isolated spaces and organic spaces such as the gallery walk. The building footprint prominently shows the clustering of barnacle while it invites people from the memorial park and the Connor Street to the site. The use of sustainable and local materials such as weathering wood that will start with brown, a more natural shade, will weather to a grey wood.

Beacon | Fragmented Dualism | Dyad | Ambiguity
The aim was to design and develop a new Architecture and Technology Precinct which acts as an inclusive creative hub and beacon for Griffith University, which is also cultural and climate responsive, complex and comprehensive building which can foster inter-multidisciplinary education which stimulate innovative, ethical and progressive learning and teaching. This project was inspired by a cross section of an apple where concept of fragmented dualism exists under an umbrella or multiple interior and exterior spaces under one grid-shell roof which creates vast open spaces and unique access paths and nodes throughout the site as it encourages student interaction. The the polycarbonate roofing material was used to maximise the passive heating and cooling of the interior spaces.
