WELCOME GOOD BETTER
BREAKTHROUGH Sakata has a long history of creating breakthrough flower varieties. In fact, we are quite proud that 2013 marks our Centennial year and that we will join the ranks of those few companies in our industry that have celebrated this milestone. What does one hundred years in business mean for our business partners? It means we have a long history of consistently bringing breakthrough genetics to the marketplace. Earlier breakthroughs, like our extra-large flowered pansy Majestic Giants II, the world’s first F1 hybrid pansy introduced in 1966, have become classics – and are still market leaders today, thanks to active breeding programs designed to meet changing market demands. This history also means we have the breeding experience and the germplasm to develop new breakthrough products, including our latest achievements, SunPatiens® and SuperCal®. While consumer satisfaction will always be a critical consideration, we are listening to distributors, growers and retailers so we can deliver products, technical information and marketing support to address production and sell-through needs. The market requires products that are reliable, easy to program, survive well in transit and offer long shelf life at retail. In addition to premium genetics, we recognize the demand for innovative marketing ideas and holiday promotional programs. Our 2012-13 introductions build on Sakata’s tradition of serving the needs of our business partners. We look forward to bringing you more of these products in the years ahead. Breeding breakthroughs for nearly a century.

As container gardening and outdoor decorating continue to grow, lines are blurring between what we traditionally think of as indoor pot crops and outdoor decorating. For the open-minded, this transition is opening up some exciting possibilities for pot crops in mixed containers and in the bedding segment. Festival gerbera is a prime example of this crossover. Our Confetti hypoestes, Astra platycodon and various primula are other good candidates for multiple uses. For traditional pot crop distribution, we offer tried-and-true crops as well as some real innovations like Appeal campanula.

Sunflower Since Sakata first brought F1 hybrid sunflowers to the market in 1987, we’ve focused our breeding efforts on pollenless, uniflora varieties that perform under short day conditions and lower temperatures. With the introduction of Vincent® this year, we’ve taken a major step forward in sunflower breeding. Vincent was bred to be more day length neutral for greater flexibility in programming, allowing growers to produce high quality crops early, mid and late season.

Melon
F1 • Chinese type • Adaptable
F1 • Cantaloupe • Personal-sized
This hybrid Chinese kale, or gai lan, is a popular vegetable in Southern Asia. It resembles a small version of broccoli, with slender stalks that are harvested and sold in bunches when 2 or 3 flowers open. It likes humidity but can be grown nearly anywhere if soil is kept moist. About 10 days earlier than OP types, with thicker stems. After main stem is cut, it branches freely for extended harvests.
Lilliput is a unique personal-sized, miniature Eastern melon. It offers very high sugars and fragrance that combine for a wonderful flavor. The firm, dark orange flesh is maximized by a small, closed center cavity. The exterior begins light green then turns to a yellow-tan color as it ripens. The stem then slips when fully mature. A must-have choice for the home garden. Green Lance

Sweet Canary is a semi-determinate vine, yellow grape tomato with early maturity (about 65 days). Firm, sweet fruits are an attractive deep yellow color and weigh an average of 0.5 ounces. Plants are suitable for outdoor or indoor production. Ideal for home gardens, specialty markets and for bedding plant growers looking for a tomato variety for large container sales.
Tomatoes are excellent sources of potassium, folic acid and vitamins A, C and E. Tomatoes also contain important anti-inflammatory nutrients called carotenoids and bioflavonoids. Key tomato carotenoids include beta-carotene and lycopene, in addition to two more recent discoveries: phytoene and phytofluene. The bioflavonoids, which are concentrated in the tomato skin, have been shown to also counteract inflammation and allergic reactions. The main compounds are quercetin and kaempferol.
