DESIGN PORTFOLIO Design is interaction of unity, contrast, opposite extremes , compositions and balance. I always try to full fill these aspects in my work. I never get fed up from one work until it reach to my satisfaction level. For me there is black or white . Grey never satisfied me. For me my design have no stage it’s a process. which keep on modifying till end. Doodling and mock models always bring out good in me. I love to do that.

ZONING Analyzing the relationship between private and public spaces. It’s the way of defining a space and its usage. Ground floor
First floor
Ground floor follows a linear pattern of zoning . From public to semi private and then private. There is no private space except kitchen.
Drawing roomaesthetically vary appealing It is near to the buffer area. Hence privacy is maintained. Problem ? It is far from kitchen.
Any particular fashion of zoning? Yes!! My house is clearly divide in public and private spaces. because of linear planning .
Parents roomNear to kitchen. Aesthetically relaxing and comfortable. food is served in parents room only. No zoning trend……but why???? Since most of the area is semi private . So there is no specific division . One zone leads to another In first floor there is maximum area of semi. private. No restrictions . Except kitchen , mandir and store. No private room. Privacy suffers.
Space usage Space usage is the amount of using a space in terms of more or less. There are various factors which define this . It can be zoning , aesthetics, weather effect, age factor, accessibility , etc. Drawing room and guest room Used when formal or informal guests come
Ground floor
There is a tap on this side. Use to wash car only
Passages
Drawing roomaesthetically very appealing . It is near to buffer area . Privacy maintained . At the same time it is far from kitchen. How it should be? Drawing room should be near to kitchen and dining table
passage
Kitchen is mainly used when there is gatherings ,celebrations or even when guests come.
Mainly use in daily. And in daily also grandparents room and washroom is used a lot.
Grandparents room used a lot by them selves . Because of TV. Tendency of beware who so ever climbing upstairs . Communicative area. From upstairs and outside. Telephone access. Comfortable bed. Main problem faces- washroom and bathroom are far. They have to move a lot.
. How it should be? It should be connected with bedroom only.
Mander space come in use once in a day
Second floor
Mandir is near to kitchen, my room and to parents room. Lot of noise come and create disturbance in workshop. Brothers and mine room use daily.
For kitchen lobby
Lobby –used as passage .
toilet bath Used daily Washroom ,bathroom basin and kitchen used a lot. -only one bath and washroom.
Parents room use a lot.
All rooms have equal usage. Except balcony and store room. Balcony and store used very less -claustrophobic feeling in balcony -nothing to do in store! -no sunlight.
Parents room - USED THE MOST But why??? This happen because they have LED TV better quality . Near to kitchen. And the bed is very much comfortable and we all can sit .though dad use chair. Since dinner is served over here , we all can chat also Problem? Sometime it becomes cumbersome . Traditionally not good for health(anthroprometricaly also.) TV is bit near to bed. No proper table to keep food . Becomes dirty . Suggestions – There should be a living area .make sure it should be aesthetically appealing. And near to that living area a dining table can be placed with TV. since family like to have TV.
proportions
In terms of proportions- the master rooms are in disproportion as compare to other rooms. they are comparatively more spacious. Then balcony is very small .due to which house hardly gets any natural light. In mandir there is only space for single person. it should be wider.
Natural light
Residence suffers in terms of natural light. Less windows creates ventilation problem. In the middle part of the room there is no natural light. We have to use artificial light. Solution- big windows should be provided and there should be a central open area. Courtyard can be one of the solution.
Overall movement Movement is the interaction of space with the trend of circulation . How circulation take place to access a particular space In daily routine my grandparents have to travel a lot for washroom and for bathroom. They have to cross dining area.
-good circulation in drawing room‌.except tuffy placement.. Create problem in putting food on table. Kitchen is far-food become cool Kitchen Should be in middle
Otherwise also if some guest comes they also travel a lot. They cross guest room then dining area . For washing there hands also. Problem-breaks privacy. Solution- washbasin and washroom can be in middle
Ground floor
Aesthetically entrance can be more beautify . Repainting is require . Greenery can be done. Doors should be changed .
The circulation which take place in house is very linear. One area lead to other. There is smooth functional movement.
Sometimes both the doors open create problem in movement. No enough space.
Chances of collapsing if someone taking food inside and someotherpersone coming from grandparents room.
-less space Become problem to take out crockery problem for person sitting here .though hardly this chair is used. But still.
First floor Only one person can move from this place
Washroom problem Have to travel a lot. Both the doors can not be open. Become hindrance in movement.
Good point-both the doors accessible for entrance . To avoid so much travelling .
A lot of traffic in lobby area. Collapsing happens. Movement from parents room .from mine and brothers, may be from kitchen and washroom . Maximum problem of movement comes in morning in between 8-9 am‌ everyone get ready for daily jobs.
Form and space
Clearance in movement Mainly caused by furniture
To check the balance of each space a exercise of positive and negative is done Ground floor
Ground floor
First floor
First floor
Overall all spaces are balanced Why? Because mostly the furniture is in square or rectangle shape. No curved furniture is place. moreover the interaction of black and white space shows informality
accessibility Kitchen and washroom are very far. Zoning of spaces creates access problem
Grand parents room is equally accessible from all sides. That’s why it is places in middle part of house.
Brother owe the master room he have to cover a lot of distance .
My room is centrally places. Easy access from all directions.
Swatches of material used
Design brief Design a residence which include the following spaces-
Entrance-- Formal lounge-- informal lounge-- dining– kitchen-- grandparents room -- sibling room -- den -- guest room -- utility area-- powder room -- pooja room
Project brief The synopsis of this residence is according to the family members. It is totally depend upon the clients how they want their space s both functionally and aesthetically. in this case my clients are my family- JAIN FAMILY Entrance – Problem-aesthetically entrance is not appealing functionally also very small. Solution :use of glass and double heights. LoungeProblem-till now there was only one lounge in the house . But now family wants separate lounges for formal and informal. Solution: In Formal lounge- a lot of gatherings and family festivals are celebrated in the house. A lot of times drawing room is used. Desired quality-it should be lively. Formal lounge- formal drawing room use only when dads clients or work related people come . Which actually happens very less. It should be near entrance. desired quality –neutral colors and classy modern touch
Kitchen – Problem-small and accessibility of fridge was far. solution-:kitchen must be simple and organized. There should be ample storage. Kitchen must follow the triangular rule. desired quality- open kitchen with ample sunlight.
Grandparents roomProblem :far from pooja room and bathroom also they want natural weather conditions. Solution it should be in north side . They want their room should be cool in summers as they are not comfortable with AC. Grand mom wants that the space should also be near kitchen and pooja room.
Pooja room- pooja room should be wider and a lot of natural light should come in it. Desired quality- in middle of house .
Utility roomProblem-no utility room was there . Solution-addition of utility area and it should be near to the kitchen. Dining room – Problem-mainly used when relatives come .it is not used in daily basis . Family want to use dining in daily bases but they are not able to use because of two kitchens and one dining. Desired quality and solution- place should be lively aesthetically appealing and kitchen and dining should be near .
Master bedroomProblem-the current master bedroom is very small and it does not have ample wardrobe . Moreover there is no attached bathroom is there. Solution: a walk in closed with ample storage and attached bathroom and wash room . Siblings room – Problem-sibling s rooms and my room are attached with a arch in between . Which kills privacy. Moreover my brother will get marry in other three four years . So he required a spacious room . Solution- separate room for brother .

Site analysis – sun movement
EVENING SUN IN NORTH WEST DIRECTION MORNING SUN IN NORTH EAST DIRECTION
how wind blows – in summers south west wind will have hot winds in winters north north -east directions will have cold winds in monsoons south south -east will have cold breeze
SUN SETS IN WEST DIRECTION SUN RISES IN EAST DIRECTION
East and West facing windows can be a huge suffering in summer. They receive no direct sun in winter, but they face the low evening and morning sun in summer.
In winters
West facing rooms are particularly prone to overheating and will need curtains.
In summers
W
Only surfaces facing South receive sun all year round.
WARM IN AFTERNOON
Surfaces facing North are in the shade all year round.

E
The winter sun is low, the summer sun is high. Vertical South facing windows work best for maximizing solar heating in the winter as they capture the low winter sun surfaces that are more horizontal receive most of their sun in the summer. This is a problem for glazed roofs and skylights which receive little sun in winter but may get overheat rooms in summer.
Quick reflection from brief
There should be easy connection and free movement in the spaces . A courtyard can solve a lot of problems. A quite and soothing space in house. I have to design a space which is spacious ----accessible----with a modern touch yet homely feeling----- which should connect with the family values .
Quality chart What I have ? What I want? This chart includes all the aspects that a residence required. Focusing on this quality chart helped me to strain my thoughts. I have a clear picture in my mind about the design of my residence.

Application of research methodology
Research methodology is the application of family members – belief cultural usage of space interaction level design approach
Beliefs- my family members do not believe in vastu but they recommend that the pooja room should be in east side as per vastu.
2
2
Interaction level of spaces – interactions happens in house but not much so there is requirement of a common lounge . Design approach- privacy is something that everyone suffers, so my design approach will be that there should be enough privacy yet communicative. Moreover there should be a connection between rooms like kitchen and utility.
1
How I incorporate the REM POOJA ROOM- 1 First condition-----pooja room needs to be near grandparents room and grandparents want cool space. So to club these things together I give mandir in NORTH EAST direction.
KITCHEN –2 kitchen is attached with utility .
3
FAMILY LOUNGE-3 a nice family lounge is given on first floor. It is lively and give homely feeling .
IDEATION Bubble diagram A bubble diagram helps to identify that which area will come under under which area. Whether the spaces are overlapping or not. It will give more clarity for the coming process. Through bubble diagram I was able to do zoning as well. this was a fun exercise in which we have to try different swatches . One should never restrict one self in this this process. Through diagrams I explored division among spaces , green space, and circulations.
•My main concern was that the family lounge should be in middle or should have a connection from all the spaces. •Mandir should be near to the grandparents room. •Kitchen is a private space.
Public
Bubble diagram-1
Semi public
Pros - kitchen is near to the drawing room, dining room and family lounge. There will be easy accessibility . -pooja room will be connected to grand parents room and master bedroom. -all private rooms are connected with family lounge cons •-utility room is very far from kitchen because ideally it should be near to it. •-brothers bedroom will be far as compare to other rooms -there is a straight entry in formal drawing area, which will create problem in privacy.
Private Semi private Green area

Buffer area
Bubble diagram-2 Pros -There will be two zones to enter. One is formal drawing room and other is family lounge . Giving two zones to enter will help to maintain privacy . -in this case I am getting a buffer area. Drawing room and dining rooms are connected and then both are connected with kitchen. -powder room is also near to the kitchen. -family lounge is in between ,which will provide interaction among members. Con -parents room is far from kitchen. Mother have to cross a lot of other zones to reach there. -kitchen is very near to entry. And for family kitchen is a private area so this is not a favorable place .
Formal drawing and dining
Pooja room guestroom

Final Bubble diagram
• This gives me a nice buffer area . •I have a option of putting family lounge on first floor (still have to explore) •I got the relationships between each zone and how one zone will interact with the other zone.
Schematic zoning Next step was to do zoning of each space. it should be floor wise . Here zones are divided according to the bubble diagram . This was the stage from where the actual journey starts.

formal
This was my first attempt. --First it started with giving entry on north direction and placed the zones accordingly. BUT WHY NORTH ONLY ??? I first choose north direction because shades come in north direction and I want two paths near entry only 1)Towards family lounge and other 2)Formal drawing After that I had I had couple of other schematic zoning doodling WHATS NEW IN THOSE DOODLINGS? I tried by Shifting stairs ,poooja room, kitchen room to achieve the desired result.
Want to explore the west side entry also. I find this direction more interesting. Here I was not satisfied with my family sitting. Again tried different zoning. A lot of time I tried to give my family lounge in center . Then fit staircase around it. Why? Giving staircase like this was saving a lot of space.
Moved forward with this schematic zone plan
grandparents Room
kitchen
utility
den
Why? -family lounge in center , -morning light in grand parents room and in pooja room. Attached dining and drawing reason for formal drawing room placement its in south direction-----a lot of heat---formal drawing room uses very less. -utility and kitchen attached. Problem? Still have to figure out the staircase.

Design development Till now everything was on paper with rough ideas
For design development it was essential to move on AutoCAD plans. AutoCAD plans will give more prominent image . As in that we have to work with dimensions and measurements. Here it was required to work with furniture and its placements . Anthro was the another aspect which was in mind while doing design development. How I started? I stared first by putting furniture on place. A lot of changes came in between.
Pros : centralized entry for path way. It makes visually confusion free. family lounge is placed in center of the house. Then the staircase is aligned to the family lounge . Placing family lounge in between will save a lot of space. there is a pass through for dining under the staircase Mandir is in northeast which will get morning sun. There is buffer area also for ample movement.
Consfamily lounge is very small and compact. Since mandir is in north side which is road facing might have to suffer the acoustic problem . But since early mornings are not noisy so we can place our mandir over there. There is problem of circulation around the dining area.
Why sunken seating ? To increase the family lounge area I have changed the form . This is a sunken seating. Sunken seating will give a privacy also. To incorporate the sunken seating the curved staircase is given. Moreover round lounge gives a form in space which will result in easy interaction among members.
Form and space explorations
Final plan of ground floor
Open terrace on first floor. Why? -To capture the south sun in winters. -To experience nature as there is also a small water body. -The space is near to everyone and will act like a family lounge also. Why not? -Proportions were getting wrong. As water body needs more space. -When I discussed with my clients (my family members) about this concept they refused to have a terrace on same floor . According to them it will make them discomfort in terms of safety. For them safety is the major issue.
Family lounge is shifted on first floor. Though it is not in center of house but it is in reach from every zone excepts from grandparents room. (which is the only draw bag of this design) -But after placing it on first floor I am getting wider space. -for other family members also it is convenient here. -There is a south facing big window and a quite place to sit . -I have also added a pantry for some quick snakes. -The experience over here is much more homely and easy going. NEW ELEMENT ADDED ? There is addition of courtyard in the center now . Grandparents and other family members can sit here and can do chit chat or simply enjoy the weather. TAKEN CARE OF‌‌.. If the courtyard is in open then it may crate the problem of dust and pollution. So to avoid that the courtyard is covered with a cylindrical glass all around. And a door opening is given from kitchen.
Proximity chart
CURRENT
The proximity chart tells the relationship between the zones and how family members are affected by it.
DESIRED
Desired proximity chart tells how each space should be designed which fulfils the motive of members.
Ground floor
3D model of final plan
3D paper model of final plan
First floor
Why paper model? -Paper model helped me understand my residence visually. It gives a volume in my space. it also helped to visualize the openings and windows . -It was very beneficial for me as by putting both the floor staged I realized that my windows were not aligned . -The concept of cylindrical courtyard came while I was making it as In between I was also trying different options. By this only then I shifted my family lounge on first floor.
Analysis of designed residence
Form and space
Analysis of designed residence will show the basic principles that is applied in it. This will help to make better plan by reconsidering the current one.
most of the area is semi private . Private zones are aligned separately. There is no mixing in zones
Symmetry / asymmetry The residence is symmetrical and aligned. There is a strong axis in between. It also create harmony in the space.
Circulation There is ample space of circulation. While designing the space it was taken care that there should be at least a meter space between two spaces. So that no one face space problem while walking.
-
Emphasis Centralized green area
Proximity From pooja room grandparents room is very much accessible
Axis The circulation in house is non linear . It is from all the directions. Current house face the problem of privacy because of linear design. So this time I decided ti make it in a non linear form.
Now it is noticed that pooja room is far from parents room Solution – the stair case that parents will use to climb down stairs is opening towards pooja room only. Ultimately they have to come down stairs so now first thing they will face after coming down stairs is the pooja room

N GRANDPARENTS ROOM Grandparents room is simple and elegant as per their specifications. They believes in the concept of minimalistic . The main concern is given in textures and in flooring. Marble flooring will give cooling effect and also is non slippery .
The room is sufficient for grandparents . In day time they spend more time out of there room . Moreover the color combination is neutral . it will be the bed sheet that will highlight the room . The interiors are the mix of both modern and classic styles.

Current house analysis First we did current house analysis .the analysis was followed by all the principle s of designs. Likesymmetry/asymmetry , harmony , balance , accessibility ,zoning etc.
My learning in residence design project was through out. As this project is done step by step like a process ,so there was new absorption in every step. There were times where I keep on developing my design till end.
Case study
Residence design
Through case study I came across many architects and I come to know about there work. As main task was to choose a case study for myself of which I have to do the analysis. Here also I brace my self with principles of design . Moreover I got to know more new concepts that are possible. Like wardrobe can be placed behind the bed. Or there should be a buffer area in every zone. Adding on to this I observed how aesthetics can enhance a area.
Residence design was the project on which I have applied all my learning of previous 2 projects. Residence design was a mile stone for me. Since the design was as per my clients that is my family in this case. So I choose the correct site plan first .choosing correct site plan also gave me the idea of sun path moment. Because according to it only I have to allot the zones. -after choosing the correct site plan I did detailed research about the sun path moment .sun path is something which plays important role in terms of experience inside the house. -then process followed by filling 2 tables which consist of WHAT I HAVE and WHAT I WANT. Filling these two tables with important sub heads ultimately gave me a way on which I have to work. -bubble diagrams was more like a fun exercise for me always. I love to do that. I never stop my self in exploring different options in it. I tried many options then come up with most appropriate one . Well this was just the placement of zones .it tells that what zone should be near to what. -then zoning . Placement of zones. Zoning was the exhausted step . I struggled a lot. Tried different options. -The best part was that we also did the analysis of designed residence. Which clarifies that we are designing exactly s per my clients. - here all I have to design according to family members so I was on there side when I was styling each zone. What they like , the colors they prefers, there moment in house, etc. - Choosing the right reference images again gave me exposure about the various interiors furniture, fixtures .
my learning through my work
