ARTISTS’ VILLAGE ALIBAUG, INDIA PROJECT TYPE : ARCHITECTURE TEMPORARY STRUCTURES

The Artisits’ village is conceptualised as a community space (an art lab of sorts) that brings together art, ecology and society. The idea is to bring people from diverse backgrounds together to engage in different forms of artistic expression in a creative and critical way. The space should reflect the intention of ‘coming together’ and it should inspire reflection, quietude, creativeness, and belonging. A space where people can engage and immerse in nature and within themselves.

ARTISTS’ VILLAGE ALIBAUG, INDIA PROJECT TYPE : ARCHITECTURE PRIVATE RESIDENCES

2016-2017 DESIGN PORTFOLIO

The front portion of the property is the private residential zone where the owners of the property would stay. This area has been planned for two houses, a lap pool, a dog shelter , a car park and the servants’ quarter. This piece of land has been conceptualized to be elevated, using earth, to allow panoramic views of the sea from the houses as well the pool. The architecture of the houses would be defined by the seamless indoor-outdoor connections and form a dialogue with nature through spaces like the outdoor shower, open to sky hot tub and the outdoor dining areas. The material palette would be very neutral and modest justified through the use of locally available materials with rough finishes to maintain the rawness of the architecture.

HOUSE B- Experiencing the spaces

26

Addition of a deck on the upper level, supported on a collonade of mild steel columns, to this existing building This building is an existing house on the property which was required to be refurbished. Since the existing structure was dark and dingy and a breeding zone for mold, it was essential to make provision for the house to be naturally lit. Additionally, the spaces lacked quality and character. Therefore, a deck was proposed an extension to the house to allow the user to experience panoramic views of the Arabian sea. The rear

portion of the house has been conceptualized to be developed as an outdoor room, with a hot tub and built in seater, enclosed with high basalt walls and bamboo plantations allowing privacy and filtered light with dynamic shadows in the space. All the openings are designed to have an integrated retractable mosquito mesh system to enjoy the coastal weather seamlessly.

Interior view of the outdoor dining area with a counter for storage which can also serve as a bar.

HOUSE A-CONCEPT & VISUALIZATION

Play of light and shadow in the interior spaces

This holiday home in Alibaug, Maharashtra is a sea facing property offering serene views of the Arabian Sea. The building has been conceptually divided into two zones: the lower level

create barrier free spaces on being opened. The structure’s been given a skylight integrated with solar panels to allow the house to be naturally lit. The facade of the house is layered with

being the public zone & the upper level being the private zone. The design is fluid in terms of the circulation between the indoor and outdoor spaces using louvred sliding folding doors which

a series of top hung panels, operated by gas springs. These can be opened to enjoy the landscape or closed to create full black out for privacy.
