A TRADITION OF QUALITY AND SKILL
Keith Scorgie of Design House Southsea talks about the long tradition of sewing in this region
Thirty years ago, the Design House sewing room started life with just 1 sewer based in an industrial unit in elaborate drapes complete with swags and tails. To be a seamstress is a unique skill andcentral Southampton until we moved to our Romsey premisses in 2005. As demand increased for good quality soft furnishings at an affordable price, Design House expanded, and we now employ 3 full time experienced and expert seamstresses. We hand-make all our curtains and soft furnishings from a simple cushion to the Southampton and the surrounding area has historically been the hub of good quality sewers throughout the last century. Its heyday was before the second world war and throughout the 1950s and 60s when all the cruise liners used to be refurbished in Southampton docks. The skill stays alive to this day, but there is a need for new young
sewers to train and to take up the craft, so that the skill is not lost for the future. The Design House sewing team are perfectionists and they take huge pride in their work. The making of a Roman blind for example, takes precision skill, as well as the knowledge to ensure that they not only look amazing but meet all the latest safety criteria. If you order curtains, blinds, cushions or any soft furnishings from Design House, you can rest assured that you will get the best quality finished product.
