CRISIS SUPPORT When disaster strikes, The Salvation Army helps individuals and families get back on solid ground. Whether it’s a family who finds themselves on the street, an individual who is without food to eat or a community that has experienced a disaster, we are committed to restoring strength. Through our Family Emergency Shelter, which has 16 rooms and a total of 96 beds, we keep families together during crises and provide them with structured programs and an opportunity to live in a safe place. We are the only emergency shelter in the county that shelters the entire family together in one space. We provide access to social service programs, including help finding permanent housing and employment. For those outside the shelter, we provide assistance with utility bills, hot meals and groceries, and vouchers for our Family Thrift Stores to purchase clothing and other household items. In addition to these services, we are also a designated disaster relief location for the Alameda County Office of Emergency and Disaster Services. We are prepared to provide shelter and food to thousands throughout the county in the event of a large-scale disaster.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPORT Without the basic needs of daily life being met, it becomes very difficult to focus on bettering one’s situation, such as completing an educational program, finding and sustaining employment or taking care of a family. By providing this level of support, we keep families and individuals strong during times of transition or uncertainty. The Salvation Army offers assistance with food, utility bills, hygiene products, clothing and household items.
CARE FOR SENIORS Our Senior Lunch Program offers hot, nutritious lunches each day. We also offer other educational and recreational activities, including computer literacy classes, English language classes and a variety of health and fitness programs to stimulate both mind and body. We are a real presence in the lives of seniors—we visit them when hospitalized or housebound, we remember them on special days throughout the year, and we strive to combat loneliness through regularly organized social activities and events.

THE ENDOWMENT PARTNERS PROGRAM Endowments are special because they provide a permanent source of support for programs and services that make a substantial difference in the lives of others. The Endowment Partners Program brings together people with a shared vision to reshape their community. Each Endowment Partner shares an enduring belief in the mission of The Salvation Army in Alameda County. Their endowment investment provides a return beyond measure in the shared accomplishment of lives changed and a community enhanced for generations to come.
WAYS TO BECOME AN ENDOWMENT PARTNER Outright Gifts Outright gifts can be made using cash, stock, mutual funds, real estate or a direct transfer from your IRA. Gifts of appreciated assets have the added advantage of eliminating capital gains tax, which reduces the cost of your gift.
Life-Income and Testamentary Gifts There are a variety of gift planning options available that can be customized to meet your personal financial needs and charitable giving goals. They include: •
Charitable Gift Annuity – A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract that provides one or two beneficiaries with a fixed and secure income for life at attractive payout rates. Benefits include tax savings and tax-advantaged income. When you fund a charitable gift annuity, a portion of your gift will be transferred at your passing to the program endowment you designate.
•
Charitable Remainder Trust – A charitable remainder trust is extremely flexible and may be customized to meet your personal and family needs. Income may be fixed or variable. The trust term may be measured by lifetimes or a fixed number of years.
•
Will, Living Trust or Beneficiary Designation – You can fund an endowment gift by naming The Salvation Army as a beneficiary through your will, living trust, retirement plan, IRA, bank accounts or life insurance policy.
THE NAMED ENDOWMENT FUND: A LASTING LEGACY The establishment of a named Endowment Fund can memorialize the values of an individual or family in perpetuity. The minimum commitment to establish a named endowment is $100,000 to be funded now or through a testamentary gift.

YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE . . . DONATE IT TODAY! Volunteering for The Salvation Army is gratifying, because you know that you’re working with an organization that helps millions of people nationwide—and you’re serving right in your own backyard. You can directly help your neighbors who are in need. Most Salvation Army locations need help year-round with food programs, signing people up for services, and more. And we always need bell ringers to help spread cheer at our red kettles during the Christmas season. Visit volunteer.salvationarmy.org to find volunteer opportunities near you.
THE BOARD MEMBER EXPERIENCE
“The Salvation Army delivers aid to those in need very efficiently as reflected in the fact that 82 cents of every dollar the Army receives goes to benefit its clients. The Army offers a hand up and not just a hand out. At the same time, recipients may receive spiritual guidance if they are open to it. When my wife and I give to The Salvation Army, we feel better about ourselves, each other and our family. We are proud to be a part of this organization and the work that it does.” — Peter Darbee, Former CEO of PG&E, and Salvation Army of Alameda County Board Member
