Impact Report The Salvation Army

Del Oro Division Serving Northern California & Northern Nevada

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the storms of destruction pass by. Psalm 57:1

Dear Friends,

Our Mission The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

It would be an understatement to say that last year was full of many experiences for The Salvation Army. From the development of new facilities to success stories of individuals who have rebuilt their lives through programs like Adult Rehabilitation, there were moments in which we felt very blessed. The year was also marked with tragedy in the form of deadly wildfires in multiple counties throughout Northern California. So many were impacted, losing loved ones, homes and jobs. In the midst of all this, we found hope, and we were so privileged to be there to feed, to listen and to pray. Throughout our history, we have provided help and hope to others, without discrimination. From natural disasters to personal ones, we have been there to lend our hearts and hands to those who have been touched by adversity. And it’s all made possible by you. We hope that you will continue to remain present with us, supporting us, and continue to see the amazing hope that we see. Sincerely, Majors Ivan and Jennifer Wild Del Oro Divisional Commanders

Highlights and Successes Our Reno location launched Pathway of Hope, an initiative that helps social service clients overcome poverty. Case managers work closely with families for six months to two years, eliminating barriers to self-sufficiency and breaking the cycle of generational poverty. At the end of the first year, there were ten active clients in the program, and one client had successfully graduated. The graduate continues to thrive in her new employment and new home. Last year, our Community Center in Carson City provided their Morning Latchkey Program to nearly 150 students at every at-risk elementary school in the local school district, for a total of four schools. The program specializes in developmental skills, self-esteem and positive behavior that aids children in making healthy choices.

A Life Touched

by a Powerful Program Before Delilah came to The Salvation Army, her life was difficult. She first began using drugs at the age of 13, and used continuously for 20 years. For a time, Delilah did a good job of hiding her addiction— she had a car, a home, and her children. On the outside she seemed normal, but in actuality she was a self-described “functioning addict.”

By the time she was 30, Delilah was in and out of jail, and lost everything she had. “It was not just material “I lost hope things—I lost hope and any spark that I had once carried. It and any was all gone,” she says. When she came to our Adult Rehabilitation Program in Chico, all Delilah had were the clothes on her back and paperwork from jail. The six-month residential treatment program helped her to heal, and get into recovery.

spark that I carried. It was all gone.”

“The Salvation Army has given me restoration—it has taught me how to live again.” Delilah now has a renewed sense of purpose. She has a great job, a home, a car, and she is able to see her children all the time. “My life is amazing,” says Delilah. “I am one of the fortunate ones.”

Family Fun with the Oakland A’s The Oakland A’s partnered with our Garden Street Shelter in Oakland to bring Christmas to the families living there. There were 60 people in attendance, including shortstop Marcus Semien and right fielder Stephen Piscotty. The staff set up games for the children, including a photo booth and face painting. After playing games, the families were presented with Christmas gifts and household supplies. It was an exciting day—a day of friendship.

Highlights and Successes In Chico, we had the official groundbreaking for our beautiful new Community Center! Officially opening in Spring 2019, this 18,000-square-foot facility allows for an increase in the quality and type of programs that we can provide in the Chico area. It features a fullsize gym, commercial kitchen, chapel, classrooms, computer lab and office space.

New Conference Center at

Camp Del Oro

Completed in Summer 2018, the Stephen S. Ball Conference Center was made possible by a generous gift from the Stephen S. Ball estate. The Center was built at The Salvation Army’s existing Camp Del Oro near Nevada City.

At the Center, we welcome church, business and school groups from August through May for retreats, meetings and team-building experiences. With a gymnasium/multipurpose room, plus three lodges with 13 rooms each, this new Conference Center is meant to help offset the cost of providing quality summer camp experiences to low-income children. We remain ever grateful to Stephen S. Ball and the Ball family for their generosity of spirit, and their continued belief in The Salvation Army.

Our Culinary Arts Training Program in Lodi celebrated its 10th anniversary. This 16-week program has been instrumental in getting people off the streets and into productive careers. 150 students have graduated over the life of the program— a true accomplishment with benefits that will last for years to come. The Salvation Army’s National Advisory Board came to the Del Oro Division for a meeting. We were able to host them with a CEO Breakfast, as well as a dinner gathering at the historic Railroad Museum in Old Town Sacramento. Each of our three culinary job training programs (in Sacramento, Lodi and Napa) came to the event to serve appetizers to the hungry crowd as they moved through the museum. A unique event that is still remembered by many.

Northern California Wildfires: We are deeply grateful to all of the individuals, small businesses, foundations, corporations, churches, media

Devastation & Relief

In 2018, Northern California experienced a high level of devastation due to wildfires—most notably, the Carr Fire in Shasta County, the Mendocino Complex Fire and the historic Camp Fire in Butte County. In the months and years that follow these terrible events, The Salvation Army continues to provide assistance where needed. During the immediate relief phase for each fire, we provided survivors and first responders with three meals a day, snacks, beverages, essential items, and emotional and spiritual care. It was the perseverance of our officers, staff and volunteers that made it all possible.

outlets and volunteer groups who supported our relief efforts for the Northern California wildfires. Your contributions are the cornerstone of not only our initial relief, but all of our longterm recovery activities.

Carr Fire

Starting in late July 2018, the Carr Fire burned 230,000 acres in Shasta and Trinity Counties. When it began threatening the city of Redding, 38,000 people were evacuated. Over a thousand homes were destroyed. Our Emergency Disaster Service teams provided 47,000 meals and snacks, plus emotional and spiritual care for 1,700 people at five locations. Our Early Recovery Program for survivors still continues, where as of February 2019 we have assisted 258 households.

Mendocino Complex

Just a few days after the Carr Fire began, the Mendocino Complex Fire started, and became the largest recorded fire complex in California history. It consisted of the River and Ranch Fires, which burned in Mendocino, Lake, Colusa and Glenn Counties—destroying almost half a million acres. For nearly two weeks, we provided immediate response services at half a dozen locations throughout the area. We served over 25,000 meals and snacks, and provided financial assistance to 315 households.

The Camp Fire

The Camp Fire began in Butte County on November 8, 2018 and quickly became one of the most devastating fires in California’s history, claiming 86 lives. A major portion of the town of Paradise was destroyed, including the Salvation Army Thrift Store located there. 153,336 acres were burned, destroying 13,972 homes, 528 businesses and 4,293 other buildings. 52,000 people were ultimately evacuated. As many returned to their homes, there were thousands of people from the community with no home to return to.

The Salvation Army was on the scene from the beginning, and in the months that follow, we are continuing to walk with the survivors on their path toward restoration. For six weeks, we operated a local distribution center that helped 20,000 survivors with essential household items and clothing. Looking forward, we will continue to provide our Early Recovery Program, where we provide tools and financial assistance to help survivors rebuild their lives, and transitional housing.

Leigh White, Vice President and General Manager of KTXL-TV, Sacramento Fox Affiliate

“I’ve proudly served on The Salvation Army Advisory Board in Sacramento for the last couple of years. This has truly been a great, eye-opening experience. I’ve learned so much about the variety of programs they offer, and how those services have helped many in our region. Workforce Development is a perfect example of that. You take someone who may have been living on the streets, teach that person a new skill and then he or she finds employment. That, to me, is incredibly impactful. That’s why I’ve tried to support the Army in any way I can, whether it’s a personal donation or lending a hand with a wildfire relief telethon at my station. I know it’s all going to a great cause.”
