The Salvation Army of Sacramento
Dear Friend, It is such a privilege to lead the Del Oro Division and see the incredible work of The Salvation Army in Sacramento, all due to our wonderful partnership with the Sacramento community. The Salvation Army is able to offer hope in many different forms. Summer camp and after-school programs for children, child care, food assistance, holiday toys and food, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, shelter for men and women, and transitional housing are all ways in which we “do the most good.” Most recently, we expanded our shelter program to 24/7 services with case management and job resources. This year we’ve implemented culinary and construction training programs where graduates can secure employment in their respective industries, and also a GED program for adults looking to better themselves.

FAMILY SERVICES Our Family Services office strengthens Sacramento County families by providing vital services year-round. Our food box program provides food for 2,000 families per month. Our rental and utility assistance program provides crucial help in times of crisis. We’re also proud of our Women of Hope program, whose participants learn job readiness skills for a life of success, and also receive proper clothing for job interviews.
ADULT EDUCATION Last year, we launched a new GED program at our Community Center. Adults in the community who wish to earn their General Education Development Diploma may enter the program. Students spend one year concentrating on classes and lab work, along with tutoring and help with GED test preparation. Upon successful completion of the program and passing the test, students receive their General Education Diploma and enter a new world of opportunities, increased earning potential and a sense of self-confidence.

“Getting my GED is something I’ve always wanted to do, but having six kids, it was hard. I dropped out of high school when I was in tenth grade. I was scared at first, but I just took that step and signed up. Now I’m learning algebra, stuff I thought I couldn’t do. If I get that GED, I will feel very good about myself. I’ve always wanted it, to wear the cap and gown, and for my family to see that it doesn’t matter how old you are. It can be done.” —Rachel, GED Program Participant
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT In concert with our commitment to improve the Sacramento community, we offer two important job training opportunities. Both programs help to meet high industry demand while transforming the lives of people who have overcome homelessness, addiction and other serious life problems—and are ready to start new, productive lives.
Construction Training We are excited to share with you our new Construction Training Program. Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. of Northern California has partnered with The Salvation Army to offer a one-month, hands-on training program that provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the construction trades as a career path. Upon completion, students receive both OSHA 10 certification and Construction Trade certification cards, and are ready to work. Our goal is to teach 10 students per quarter, or 40 students per year.
Culinary Training In February 2017, we introduced our Culinary Arts Training Program to help students develop entry-level kitchen skills so that they may successfully work in food service operations, including restaurants, hotels and other industry-related organizations. Each 16-week course includes 384 hours of class and lab instruction. Since the program’s inception, 100% of our students have gotten jobs and maintained sobriety. (Over the past decade, Salvation Army culinary programs in Northern California have seen a 90% success rate after one year.)

“Getting myself into a career instead of a job is the best opportunity for me and my family. With my certificate, I can present myself as a good candidate as opposed to someone off the street. This program and experience are top of the line. Coming off the streets, having the housing and having this training, it’s just a Godsend.“ —Brian, Culinary Arts Training Program Student
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING The Salvation Army is dedicated to meeting the needs of a growing population of homeless families in our area. The 34-unit E. Claire Raley Transitional Living Center provides struggling families with structured programs and an opportunity to live in a safe, furnished apartment for six months to two years. In addition to the warmth and stability of these units, families take advantage of important social services programs, including daily counseling to help them find stable housing and employment. The complex is a sober environment and offers access to recovery programs, as well as tutoring and mentoring. The breadth of this program truly transforms the lives of Sacramento families. Our goal is to see 80%-90% of our adult residents either in training or working.
CENTER OF HOPE EMERGENCY SHELTER Our 130-bed Center of Hope, the largest homeless shelter in Sacramento County, provides veterans, women and men with a 30- to 90-day stay and a focus on overcoming homelessness. Our clients receive case management and job preparation workshops, with recovery groups and Bible Study available. In a new partnership with the City of Sacramento, to help alleviate chronic homelessness, our shelter is now a 24/7 facility. Ultimately, we have a 60 to 90-day goal of getting our shelter clients into stable housing.

THE ENDOWMENT PARTNERS PROGRAM Endowments are special because they provide a permanent source of support for programs and services that make a substantial difference in the lives of others. The Endowment Partners Program brings together people with a shared vision to reshape their community.
HOW TO JOIN THE ENDOWMENT PARTNERS PROGRAM Outright Gifts Outright gifts can be made using cash, stock, mutual funds, real estate or a direct transfer from your IRA. Gifts of appreciated assets have the added advantage of eliminating capital gains tax, which reduces the cost of your gift. Life-Income and Testamentary Gifts There are a variety of gift planning options available that can be customized to meet your personal financial needs and charitable giving goals. They include:
Each Endowment Partner shares an enduring belief in the mission of The Salvation Army in Sacramento County. Their endowment investment provides a return beyond measure in the shared accomplishment of lives changed and a community enhanced for generations to come. 14
•
Charitable Gift Annuity – A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract that provides one or two beneficiaries with a fixed and secure income for life at attractive payout rates. Benefits include tax savings and tax-advantaged income. When you fund a charitable gift annuity, a portion of your gift will be transferred at your passing to the program endowment you designate.
•
Charitable Remainder Trust – A charitable remainder trust is extremely flexible and may be customized to meet your personal and family needs. Income may be fixed or variable. The trust term may be measured by lifetimes or a fixed number of years.
•
Will, Living Trust or Beneficiary Designation – You can fund an endowment gift by naming The Salvation Army as a beneficiary through your will, living trust, retirement plan, IRA, bank accounts or life insurance policy.
THE NAMED ENDOWMENT FUND: A LASTING LEGACY The establishment of a named Endowment Fund can memorialize the values of an individual or family in perpetuity. The minimum commitment to establish a named endowment is $100,000 to be funded now or through a testamentary gift.
