Alcuaz’s rooster, with puffed chest and razor beak, is elevated to meet the spectator eye to eye––blackened feathers rendered in the impastoed graphic strokes reminiscent of the artist’s Barcelona period merging with the hubbub of its surroundings to convey an atmosphere of frenetic energy.
A stunning specimen of Manansala’s transparent cubism, Candle Vendors defies all concepts of spatial dimension through the eyes of the spectator. In the foreground, three candlestick vendors are grouped together, line of sight angled above them as the viewer looks down at the candles resting on woven baskets. But as the eye follows the gaze of the rightmost vendor, a checkered path slopes upward in the far left, leading the observer towards an enigmatic darkness, adding mystique to an already stimulating pièce de résistance. The painting was acquired by the previous owner directly from the artist. The previous owner recalls that it had been sold to him prior to it being exhibited in the late 1970s in an art gallery called Showroom, which was located near The Plaza restaurant and the Goldcrest Arcade in Makati. A receipt dated 30 December 1977 and signed by the artist was also shown to Salcedo Auctions.

Serious collectors of Philippine art have identified this series as arguably National Artist BenCab’s most important. Born out of his nostalgia for Filipino culture while living in London, and inspired by turn of the century photographs, his exploration into these vestiges of a bygone era resulted in paintings such as this 2003 incarnation. In creating the Larawan series, BenCab aimed to merge the past and the present through technique. Focusing on a contrast between the intricate detailing of folds and the draping of the woman’s dress on one hand, and a flattened graphic perspective of her environment on the other. The woman is painted in a wash of sepia tones, while bright geometric shapes frame her figure. The result is an elegant nod to local tradition and culture through a distinctively modern lens.

From 1959 to 1963, Fernando Zóbel created what are known as his “Black Paintings,” a series of monochrome pieces with hyperbolic gestural forms. Devoid of color, Zóbel used black as his focal point to create landscapes of motion. In an interview published in Zobel: La Serie Blanca by Rafael Perez-Madero, the painter says of his Black series, “Limited to black and white, I tried to find a substitute for the vibrations formerly produced by contrasts of color.” He continues, “Inevitably, when a painting begins to suggest light and volume, and to the extent that it does, it stops being abstract.” In Arganda we see an influence of calligraphy, which Zóbel studied in the years prior. A swift lightness springs from the central mass, as if capturing an ephemeral moment, immortalized by the canvas. Provenance: Lot 148

FROM PARIS TO CORDOBA TO MANILA:

THE JOURNEY OF ¿A DO...VA LA NAVE?
he present owner of ¿A Do...Va la Nave? acquired the painting by descent from his grandmother, Maria Alberta Esther Susana Pignocchi-Bonaldi. Her husband Jose Domingo Bonaldi, whose grandfather was the first vice consul of Italy to Argentina, received it as a gift from his business associate Goar Mestre, a media tycoon who fled his home country of Cuba upon the triumph of Fidel Castro and the Communist Revolution. Deciding to settle in Buenos Aires in 1959, Mestre then pioneered the television and mass communication industry in Argentina. Mestre and Bonaldi, who were close friends, together established the first local TV station in Cordoba, Canal 13. The elements of family and friendship that are interlaced in the story of this painting have become part of the fabric of ¿A Do...Va la Nave?. Tracing the history of the painting led the specialist team at Salcedo Auctions to explore Luna’s ties to either Cuba or Argentina, as it is unknown where Mestre first got hold of the painting (telephone interview by the current owner with Ana Maria Mestre Martinez, daughter of Goar Mestre, Buenos Aires, April 2015). One plausible connection is through Felix Pardo de Tavera, the brother of Luna’s ill-fated wife Paz, who settled in Buenos Aires with his Argentinian wife Agustina Manigot and worked there both as a physician and as a sculptor (Pardo de Tavera’s bust portrait of the patriot Gen. Jose de San Martin is installed in the presidential palace of Casa Rosada). But considering the bad blood between Luna and the Pardo de Taveras - it was known that the family consequently destroyed
all of his work in their possession–could this painting have been spared and crossed the Atlantic, later to be acquired by Mestre? Another theory that was investigated was Luna’s association with Spanish officials who had travelled between the Philippines, Spain, and Cuba. This included Ramón Blanco, Spanish Governor General of the Philippines (1893-96), and thereafter Captain General of Cuba (189798), whose portrait Luna had painted. Known for his conciliatory position towards the Filipino reformists, and for his friendship with the artist and Dr. Jose Rizal, could he have brought ¿A Do...Va la Nave? to Cuba? The complexities that surround the origins of ¿A Do...Va la Nave? make this painting extremely important in the annals of Philippine art. The questions that it raises are of special significance to the study of Luna’s oeuvres. From its creation in Paris, to its finding a home over three generations in Cordoba, to the many possible paths it has travelled along the way, it is highly likely that this is the first time that ¿A Do...Va la Nave? has reached the shores of Juan Luna’s motherland. As a treasured heirloom representing the bond of family, Salcedo Auctions is extremely privileged to be given the opportunity to bring ¿A Do...Va la Nave? back to the Philippines. The multiplicity of meanings intertwined with its enigmatic past make it a true gem of 19th century Philippine painting that surpassed, and will continue to exceed, any limitations of border, culture or time.

The location and dimensions of ¿A Do...Va la Nave? were indicated as unknown in the seminal book on the artist published by the Eugenio Lopez Foundation in 1980, the only record of its existence being a reproduction in the 31 May 1886 edition of the Barcelona-based literary journal Ilustracion Artistica of an engraving based on the artwork by M. Weber.
What does this curious scene all mean? The title of the painting borrows the coro of an unfinished 1841 poem by Jose de Espronceda, a 19th century Spanish Romantic poet, the lines speaking of the uncertainty of the sea:
Created at the start of what would become a nine-year stay by Luna in the French capital, this allegorical work can be considered as an important transitional opus. Here, the artist reveals a more relaxed approach to subject matter as he shifts from the strict academic formalism of the Salon with its proclivity for grand historical scenes, and moves to more intimate genre scenes and a style that would be influenced by the tailend of French Impressionism. This painterly candor was perhaps Luna’s way of encapsulating the frenetic energy of the city, where an increasingly successful artist such as he could be better exposed to leading dealers and collectors, and have the freedom of creative experimentation. In a way, Paris represented, in the words of the social historian Racquel A.G. Reyes, “emancipation.” “[B]y the late 19th century [it] had become the focus of new modes of learning, thinking, and living. It was, to paraphrase Victor Hugo’s vivid description in his epigraph to Zola’s Paris, the ship of human Progress.” It is perhaps no coincidence then that ¿A Do...Va la Nave? shows a skiff bobbing along a turquoise sea. The passengers of the boat consist of seven elegantly garbed women in evening dress sitting languidly, with the one perched highest presumably Luna’s most favored model, the distinguished looking and voluptuous Angela Duche. One of the women appears to be a bride, face concealed by a veil, while another carefree

There is a surprising addition in the La Ilustracion engraving that is clearly absent in the painting: an eighth woman who has fallen off the boat. Tests on ¿A Do...Va la Nave? under a UV lamp by a professional conservator did not reveal any pentimento of this eighth woman. One can speculate, therefore, that the disparity between the reproduction in the publication and the painting as viewers see it today may have stemmed from the original patron of ¿A Do...Va la Nave? requesting Luna to remove the grim image not long after it was completed such that the pigment, which was used to replace it, underwent the same aging process as the rest of the paint layer.

maiden swathed in chiffon stretches close to the edge, her inverted, comely countenance gazing teasingly at the spectator. What is curious here is that the women far outnumber the two men on the boat, the younger one dressed as a soldier sitting near the bow surrounded by the ladies, the other older gentleman seeming to be sketching alone on the stern. It is a wonder that the vessel has not capsized given the uneven distribution of the passengers.

ainted one year after Spoliarium garnered Juan Luna a gold medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Art, a signal achievement that raised the profile of the Filipino artist and, by extension, the reform movement on the international stage, this ravishing oil on canvas signed and dated ‘LVNA Paris 1885’ was thought to have been lost until its incredible discovery early this year in the central Argentinian city of Cordoba.
La Ilustracion Artistica interprets the picture of the boat moving into an unknown horizon, the grey clouds clearing into pinkish wisps of sky, the colors reflected in the beauteous costumes of the passengers boldly confident in the face of possible danger, as youthful hubris. Luna’s interest in romanticism, however, as evidenced by his reference to Espronceda may point to the artist’s exploration of an even more elusive artistic ideal—the lifelong search for the sublime. Another way of reading the painting is that of Luna, the ilustrado male, coming to terms with modern femininity. Belle Epoque Paris presented a challenge to the artist’s traditional view of women as reticent and subservient. Here, we see the artist as the young gentleman surrounded by fashionable and flirtatious muses whose pink cheeks, fulsome bosoms, and alabaster corporeality created an overpowering allure that presumably Luna found, much like the ship drifting into uncharted territory, difficult to control. He is, likewise, the old sage at the stern surveying the scene, his wisdom outweighing folly, staying the course and keeping the boat on even keel.

A possible early version of Pineda’s eponymous award-winning painting from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, this painting, signed a year before in 1903, portrays five women preparing betel nuts while a man sits with a book in the background. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition was a seven-month long world’s fair, which devoted 47-acres to the Philippine Exhibition. Wanting to display the culture of America’s newly acquired colony, the exhibit incorporated some 1,100 Filipinos within the display including tribal Moros, Bagobos, Igorots and Negritos. From the Western perspective, the indigenous Filipinos were touted as dog-eaters and savages.

A part of the 100 structures in the Philippine grounds was the Government building, where paintings by Fabian de la Rosa, Felix Resurrección Hidalgo, Juan Luna (who had some 21 works on display), and Jorge Pineda were exhibited to represent the sophisticated side of the Philippines. Pineda won two awards for his efforts, a Bronze for his painting, A Filipino Girl, and an Honorable Mention for Preparing the Betel Nuts (Las Buyeras). While the painting included in the 1904 exhibition is believed to be of a much bigger scale, what is certain is that this version was painted while Pineda was in the process of planning for the fair. Las Buyeras is Philippine genre painting at its finest, inviting viewers into an intimate circle, showing Pineda’s refined sentimentality towards his subjects. The painting emanates a silence in atmosphere that highlights both a commonality and singularity between each of the women. Despite a hardened gaze and a look of longing, Pineda’s deliberate strokes and dramatic play with light and shadow generates a warmth that radiates beyond the canvas.

he appreciation of a portrait begins in the private realm – its depth and fullness of meaning known only to the subject’s family and close friends. But when a picture enters the public domain – that is, when the sitter’s inner circle is no longer around, or for one reason or another decides to bring it outside, then the question of identity takes a back seat (unless of course the sitter is of historical importance) and notions of beauty and symbolism – and by extension virtue – are held up for scrutiny by other viewers. The ability of an artist to create an image that conveys these ineffable qualities, therefore, becomes the measure of the success of a portrait, not simply as a mimetic representation of a particular person, but ultimately as a work of art. It is hardly surprising then that some of the most important paintings that have come down through the centuries are portraits: the Arnolfini couple of Van Eyck, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Las Meninas by Velazquez, and undoubtedly the most famous one of all, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Viewing this half-length portrait signed and dated ‘Paris 1890’ by the celebrated Filipino expatriate painter Felix Resurrección Hidalgo, one is immediately taken by the charming depiction of this little girl – her doe eyes and rosy cheeks rendered with a delicate glow, perfectly capturing her youthful innocence. The French Impressionist style, marked by a great attention to the effects of light, the use of loose brushwork, and details that appear as fleeting fragments, is in luminous and luxurious evidence as seen in the lace hem and tasselled sleeves of the subject’s dress, her stud earrings and bracelet rendered in relief, the ribbon patterns and sheen of the damask wallpaper in the background, and in the sumptuous texture of the chaise on which the toddler sits with poise and aplomb. According to advisor Ramon E.S. Lerma, “This portrait is a picture of the utmost dignity. The little girl, dressed in a manner typical of children of Parisian fin de siecle bourgeois society, is propped up on a plush pillow in what appears to be the salon of a grand maison, her style and demeanour epitomizing the manners and fashion of the time. One cannot help but feel a sense of nostalgia and longing for this bygone age of elegance and
innocence.” Hidalgo’s decision to use a more traditional painting style to render the child’s face and hands is indicative of the influence of Neoclassicism and Romanticism, similar to the portraits of Ingres and Delacroix.
W
ho is Rosa Nalda Gil and how did she come to be painted by Hidalgo? Research of the painting’s provenance reveals a Philippine connection to a Spanish military official by the name of Pablo Nalda Gil who was born in San Juan, La Union in 1858. According to genealogical records, Pablo was the son of Carlos Nalda Molina, a military doctor, who married Rosa Gil Ocampo, a SpanishTagalog. Gil Ocampo’s father was Felino Gil Talens, another Spanish military official, who was married to Francisca Ocampo Davis. Felino Gil Talens was the founder of the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Bacolor, the oldest vocational school in Far East Asia, now known as the Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University. Rewarded for his services to the government with a large tract of land in Porac, Pampanga, the haciendero would later marry Carlota Aguilar, and count among his descendants the actress Rosemarie Gil, and her celebrated family of thespians.

Music in the 19th century was understood as the most abstract of all the art forms since it was borne out of pure imagination, and not from the objective world. FRANCISCO COELLO Mapa de Islas Filipinas 1849-1852 Monumental complete 3-part map of the Philippines 108 x 85 cm (42 1/2 x 33 1/2 in) A fine example of the most important 19th century Philippine map based on scientific surveys of its topography. The lithographic plates with original hand-coloring were issued separately over 3 years. The primera hoja focuses on Luzon and features detailed insets of Manila and its environs among others. The hoja segunda covers the Visayas and Mindanao while the third sheet covers the far north including the Batanes islands and the southern outer islands with an inset of the Philippines as a whole. Scarborough Shoal aka Panatag Shoal aka Bajo de Masinloc is named in the 3rd sheet. This is one among several maps put forward to bolster the Philippine claim to the West Philippine Sea. This map is scarce particularly in its complete 3 parts. It is the basis of all topographical Philippine maps that followed it. It is the result of half a century’s scientific mapping and hydrographic surveys that began with Bauza’s Carta General de Filipinas of 1792.

The original Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas was published in Mexico in 1609 by Antonio de Morga, a Spanish colonial government official. It was an account of the Philippine customs and culture as it had been found by the Spaniards and a narrative of the Spanish conquest of the country. Incensed by what he read as a prejudiced and negative description of his people, Rizal laboriously copied the book by hand at the British Museum in London. He incorporated his own extensive and detailed annotations contradicting Morga’s biases into the Sucesos text and published his version in Paris in 1890. Dedicating his annotated version to the Filipino people, Rizal wrote: “If the book succeeds to awaken your consciousness of our past, already effaced from your memory, and to rectify what has been falsified and slandered, then I have not worked in vain, and with this as a basis, however small it may be, we shall be able to steady the future.”

Completed in 1891, El Filibusterismo was originally published in Ghent to save on costs. Spending all the money he had in addition to a loan from Valentin Ventura, Rizal was able to publish his second novel in the year of its completion. Apart from those given to friends, first editions were shipped to Hong Kong with the intent of smuggling them into the Philippines, however, the copies were seized by the authorities. As a result, the remaining first edition Ghent copies continue to be a treasured and exceptionally rare find. This hardbound first edition bears the bookplate of Isidro R. Morales of Manila on the inside cover.
Francisco Colin, S.J. was a Spanish missionary, a member of the Society of Jesus, a historian and educator. Colin spent many years in the Philippines and wrote historical accounts around 1640.

The Murillo Velarde recounts Philippine events between 1616 and 1716. This is an extremely rare and important copy that still includes the map, Carta hydrographica y chorographica de las Islas Filipinas. Another is the 10-volume Geographia Historica (Madrid, 1752), of which eight volumes devote almost a hundred pages to the nature, geography, and people of the Philippines. Nicolás de la Cruz Bagay, Tagalog engraver to whom must be credited the map’s masterful engraving, was at the

service of the Jesuits until his death, and almost any printed Jesuit book was carried out by him. The Carta was printed upon the request of then governor-general Fernando Valdés y Tamón (1729-1739), to satisfy a direct order from King Philip V, who wanted to have a detailed map of the archipelago. Noted as one of the most notable works to have been printed in the Philippines (Retana), rare
with both the plate and map. It is a continuation of Francisco Colin’s Labor Evangelica published in Madrid in 1663 (hence segunda parte). The fine map is a reduced copy of Murillo’s map (originally published in 1734). The engravers Bagay and Atlas, both Tagalog, were well regarded, Bagay in particular being considered the most outstanding engraver of his generation. Palau 186215; Retana 285; Sabin 51449.

According to AE no other copy has ever gone to auction. Indeed the rarity is legendary, all Manila printed Vocabularies are scarce, as they were meant for heavy use; one of these characteristics – large and printed on rice paper – are even more so, but to find a copy presenting this condition and only lacking two leaves is exceptional. Both Noceda and San Lucar were Jesuit Priests who advocated working with Philippine locals; thus their interest in their language and traducing it in hopes of a more fluent cultural transmission, as well as propagating the Christian faith. Furthermore, the size and beauty of the imprint make it interesting typographically, as perhaps one of the largest works printed in the Philippines by the Jesuits at the time. Tagalog is defined as an Austronesian language, spoken by a third of the Philippines and is the most widely studied language in the Philippines, spoken in the most thickly populated and fertile regions of South West Luzon and the areas adjacent to the colonial capital of Manila. It is actually the basis of the Filipino language. A second edition would be printed only in 1832 at Valladolid. According to CCPBE there are only two copies in Spain and we are unable to trace copies in the United States and the United Kingdom. Palau, 192020. Medina, Manila, 249.

From the property of an Asian Collector, this example is accompanied by the original guarantee indicating that the watch was purchased on “06-08-87” – the last year this model was produced. Other documentation includes the Oyster Perpetual “Red Seal” Chronometer card with leather wallet, as well as complete service records from Rolex Japan and Rolex Hong Kong. The case, case back, dial, hands, bezel, crystal and bracelet are impeccable retaining its sharp edges. A Ref. 6263 with complete documentation and in excellent condition is difficult to come by. An iconic and highly collectible watch, the 6263 Daytona is sought after by collectors around the world. It was made famous by actor Paul Newman, who was first photographed with a Rolex Daytona on his wrist in 1972. The first model he owned was a Ref. 6263 with a standard black dial and white sub-dials similar to the present example.

Initially called the Neue Klasse (New Class), the series’ first launched with the 1500 model in Europe which eventually evolved into the very compact 1600-2 which was the first “02-series” that showcased a sporty yet affordable two-door configuration. As engine sizes and equipment levels grew to accommodate the high demands for both consumers and motorsports, the designation of the model also progressed finally ending with the 2002 Turbo. Without the engineering achievements and commercial success of the 2002, the 3-series
