Our project aims to create a grid-work intervention, which is able to house the various programs that occur on Via Portuense. The site is resulting in the cities current organic landscape. The groups’ inquiry of currently home to a number of bicycle and moped stores that line the street on both sides as well as a flea market on Sundays. The flea market currently has no dedicated space and inhibits local business as well as traffic when it is open. We saw this as an opportunity to create a multi-purpose space that is able to accommodate temporary programs in a compartmentaladjacent neighborhoods. Though it has a history a major transportation ized way. The structures house flea markets, food markets, and gathering space with the ability for each program to expand and contract based on their needs. Instead of demolishing long pathway with little cross circulation. Every Sunday a large section the existing structures to construct our new system we implemented adaptive reuse by first inserting our grid system into the existing site and then eroding the structures around our system in order to serve its new function. This The project aims to create an approach that will solve the discontinuity method allows for the character of the site to be preserved as well as providing structure and shelter for the new system.
Using the module system of scaffolding, a system seen throughout Rome in its restoration efforts, PORTAFOLD aims to continue the city’s history of functional but aesthetically pleasing monuments. The modular system of PORTAFOLD is akin to other systems seen throughout Rome, at various scales. The framework is similar that of the taberna, modular covered shops. Depending on programmatic needs, PORTAFOLD adapts from path, bench, shelter or structure, with different materials, such as solar panels for energy collection or earthwork for sound barrier. By extending the Di Ripa Grande into an underground structure, This allows Via Portuense and the surrounding area to be open to pedestrians. In moving the existing motor and bicycle shops to frame Via Portuense, The restructured market allows for visibility and circulation to the nearby residences. The more permanent shops will then be the framework for the Sunday market, designating zones for the vendors, bringing some organization to the typically disorganized event. Taking down the walls run on alongside the river allows visibility of the old Arsenal building. Building off the Arsenal building, a pier made using the PORTAFOLD method will bring accessibility and space to enjoy the waterfront view. Overall the project aims to use a modern modular system to bring back features of historic Porta Portese to make it a more functional part of Rome.
