Research Project 2014 W.I.T. Topic: The Proposed Implementation of B.I.M. (Building Information Modelling) on Construction Educational Courses in Saudi Arabian Colleges of Higher Education.

Page 27

The Implementation of B.I.M. on Construction Educational Courses in Saudi Arabian Colleges of Higher Education. Saleh Abdulatiff  Sinbate@hotmail.com  http://sinbate.wix.com/salh1 Benefits to Educational Institutes and Students. • • • •

A ready to take up a job in society in BIM. The economy progress with their new skills. Give students a more integrated view and better understanding of the building and its components. Give the students to be more collaborative in their work practices for the benefit of a project and the client.

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology What is the Implementation of B.I.M. on Construction Educational Courses in Saudi Arabian Colleges of Higher Education. show how and why colleges in Saudi Arabia should adopt the use of BIM onto their construction courses in higher education. It found that the construction industry will benefit greatly by having students who are better skilled in BIM when they leave college and ready to take up employment as BIM designers. BIM is shown to help both Saudi Arabia and its students in the future. BIM is not too difficult to set up in a college and this project shows how it can be done and the costs involved.

Literature Review The purpose of this literature review was to give reliable information from dependable sources such as other academic institutions that have implemented the process into their curriculums or advice from leading academics on how to do it.

Objectives of the Research. • •

To Propose a BIM Implementation Plan to Achieve the Aim of this Research in Saudi Arabia. To demonstrate how BIM can be integrated into Saudi Educational Construction Courses by looking at case studies from other implemenation plans in other colleges in the United Kingdom, the Unite States and Ireland.

Case Study • • • •

Dublin Institute of Technology. Penn State University, U.S.A Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland. United Kingdom- Salford University

• Benefits of BIM to Industry and Educational Institutes. • A table of how drafting for construction has evolved over the years from 1982. • Drafting, CAD, BIM - Evolution Table.

BIM Implementation Plan for Saudi Colleges. • Set up a dedicated BIM design laboratory in the College. • Purchase a number of modern computers. • Purchase the BIM software like Revit to be installed onto the computers. • Train current CAD teachers in the use of BIM at 2D and 3D levels of BIM . • Run low level BIM training courses to begin with using Revit software. • Incorporate these courses into existing Construction design courses as modules. • Establish a standard objects library to assist in the training of BIM students. • Train students to internationally recognised BIM standards such as LEED. • Establish dedicated IT team to look after problems quickly as they occur in the software. • Establish a close link with construction companies using BIM. • Including the process has been agreed and funds made available from the Ministry of Education, the time frame of implemenation is about 2 years.

Results of BIM Survey/Questionnaire.

Discussion.

Are big companies using BIM in construction and architectural projects in your country.? Yes 75% No 15 % Don,t know 10 % Q3. Do you see the use of BIM increasing in the future. Yes 60% No 36 % Don,t know 4 % Q4. The Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia are behind western countries in BIM training ? Yes 15 % No 85 % Q5. Would you like to study BIM in the future.? Yes 66% No 22 % Don,t know 12 % Q6. Do Middle East countries including Saudi Arabia need BIM.? Yes 62 % No 23% Don,t know 15 % Q7. Do you think BIM training will help college graduates find a job quicker.? Yes 20 % No 55 % Don,t know 25 % Q8. Can your college afford to implement BIM.? Yes 90% No 5% Don,t know 5% Q9. Can you see BIM reducing costs, errors, length of projects and improve teamwork in future in the construction and architectural industry.? Yes 73 % No 14 % Don,t know 13 % Q10. Can you see multi-national projects using BIM with designers and engineers from different countries working well.? Yes 50 % No 40 % Don,t know 10 %

The main issue of this research project was to investigate and show that the implementation of BIM into third level Educational institutions in Saudi Arabia would be of great benefit to the country from an architectural and construction design viewpoint. To achieve this aim, the research would have the following objectives:  To Propose a BIM Implementation Plan to Achieve the Aim of this Research in Saudi Arabia.  To demonstrate how BIM can be integrated into Saudi Educational Construction Courses by looking at case studies from other implemenation plans in other colleges in the United Kingdom, the Unite States and Ireland.  To convince Educational Leaders in Saudi Arabia of the Huge Benefits and Advanatages BIM can Give to Post Graduate Students in the Outside world of Construction Design as they enter the Workplace.  To outline the Steps involved and proposed changes to the curriculums in the Implemenation Process to establish BIM on Construction and Architectural Technology Course Curriculums in Saudi Arabia.

Q1. Is your college using BIM…

Conclusion and Recommendations: The findings of the research project have been able to answer the research questions successfully. Certainly the implemenation of BIM on construction courses in Saudi Arabia is very possible and achieveable with the financial support of the education system. The main findings are that other colleges of a similar nature in Ireland, America, the U.K. and Europe are getting close to an advanced level in BIM usage whereas Saudi is far behind in this process and must start its implemenation process soon to keep up with the demands of society and companies.

Arabian educators to seriously consider the implementation of BIM onto construction courses in their universities. An implementation plan and process plan have been outlined in order to achieve this aim. The courses should be set in modular type and be included on existing courses. Current teachers of autocad should have the training to upgrade their skills to include the use of BIM. They can then give the instruction that both industry and students need in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
