ORIENTATION OFFICE
The Salem State University Orientation office assists incoming first year and transfer students with their transition into the Viking community. Incoming first year and transfer students will have the opportunity to learn about Salem State throughout orientation from their Orientation Leader and numerous fellow campus members that will assist them in building their knowledge and confidence to embark in their journey as a Viking.
FIRST YEAR ORIENTATION
First Year students will participate in a one-day orientation in-person experience. Orientation will provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge acquisition regarding both academic and co-curricular life on and off campus. They will be able to connect with other peers through orientation to start building a sense of community. Orientation is required for all new students.
TRANSFER ORIENTATION
Transfer students will have the opportunity to attend either an in-person or a fully online orientation experience. Orientation will provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge acquisition regarding both academic and co-curricular life on and off campus. They will be able to connect with other peers through orientation to start building a sense of community.
VIKING SUPPORTER AND FAMILY ORIENTATION
Family and student supporters are invited to their own in-person orientation. Orientation student supporters and families take place concurrently to their student orientation. Families and student supporters have their own orientation schedule track where they get all the necessary information to help their students with their success.

Orientation Leader
Orientation Leaders (OLs) are role models who serve a vital purpose in the transition of new first-year students and their families, transfer students, and international students into the Salem State community. OLs are dedicated leaders who possess strong communication skills, a desire to be a part of a team and take pride in being a Viking. OLs create a community within small groups and connect with individual students and family members, as well as manage important details that ensure orientation programming runs efficiently and effectively.
Orientation Assistant
Orientation Assistants (OAs) assist with the planning and implementation of all orientation events, provide support to orientation leaders, and assist throughout the academic year with programming sponsored by the office. As student leaders of Salem State, OAs serve as resources, facilitators, and representatives of the university.
Orientation Content Creator
Orientation Content Creator (OCC) is responsible for designing and producing engaging social media materials that help new students acclimate to campus life and academic expectations. This role involves creating multimedia content, such as videos, brochures, and digital resources, to convey essential information about university programs, services, and culture. Additionally, the OCC collaborates with various departments to ensure that the orientation materials are informative, welcoming, and aligned with the university’s mission.
