BRISTOL BEARS 33 GLOUCESTER 24 TUE 18 MAY | ASHTON GATE Six tries, nine disallowed or squandered, 46 points, one red card and one yellow marked the return of supporters to Ashton Gate, as more than 3,000 turned out to witness Bristol Bears’ record victory over Gloucester in a truly bizarre West Country derby. Pat Lam’s men were six points to the good and had already seen a Kyle Sinckler try chalked off when Matias Alemanno was sent off for a dangerous tip tackle on Steven Luatua. Jake Kerr then saw his try ruled out, Andy Uren had the ball dislodged as he dived for the line and Semi Radradra was held up, before Val Rapava-Ruskin’s yellow card was followed by a Max Malins try that was allowed to stand. In a ludicrous half of rugby, Callum Sheedy’s first try in nearly two years was also disallowed, while at the other end, Santiago Carreras found space to dive over and reduce the deficit three minutes from time. There was still time for more drama, as Kyle Moyle caught Charles Piutau off guard in goal, dislodging the ball as the full back took his foot off the gas, to leave the Bears’ lead, somehow, at just six points. The theme continued after the interval, as Leiua’s 48th-minute try was pulled back for a forward pass, but Chris Vui’s stunning break, selling two dummies along the way before feeding Charles Piutau eventually broke the Gloucester resistance. Willi Heinz joined the party with a disallowed try when he was adjudged offside from a kick through, and Charles Piutau’s second of the night suffered a similar fate when the TMO spotted a knock-on from Ben Earl. But as they have done so many times this season, the table-toppers finished with a flourish, as Earl, Hughes and finally, Radradra capped a night that will live long in the memory, for a variety of reasons.

THE COACH PAT LAM Pat Lam became Director of Rugby in 2019 after steering Bristol to a highest top flight finish for a promoted club in twelve years. Lam led Connacht to their first ever major trophy in 2016, winning the Pro12 title. A Samoan international during his playing days, Lam won the 199798 Premiership with Newcastle Falcons and the 2000 Heineken Cup as captain of Northampton Saints. Lam spent five years as head coach of Auckland and four years as Head Coach of Blues Super Rugby, before joining Connacht in 2013. In his first season at the helm, Lam led Bristol to an immediate return to the Gallagher Premiership with an impressive 21 wins out of 22, before taking the top flight by storm with his dynamic brand of rugby as the Bears finished just five points off the play-offs.

A CRAZY, CRAZY GAME Pat Lam lauded the Ashton Gate faithful after they roared his side on to a record victory over Gloucester in a game that saw 10 tries ruled out. “First of all, we have to acknowledge the crowd it was it awesome. It was a crazy, crazy, game. We knew there was going to be noise, but we didn’t know it was going to be that type of noise. It has been a long time since we have had that and all credit to the Bristol fans. We got the win and the five points, which was important.”

PAUL ARCH 1959 – 2021 Sadly, earlier this year Paul caught covid and passed away unexpectedly and many of us who knew him well, are still coming to terms with the loss. Sale RFC, then Sale Sharks as the professional side became in 1999 was one of his passions alongside Manchester United. His love of Sale started with a pie and a pint, sometimes after a game of squash. We got involved with stewarding around 1994 when they won the second division title. Crowds were getting bigger and the club needed more volunteers, we were there! We’ve had some wonderful trips over the years to Twickenham and many grounds up and down the country. France, including (Biarritz, Toulouse, Toulon and Montpellier). Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Great times, great memories all made possible through our love of rugby. It’s a pity Pauls not here to share these moments with us but just maybe, he is up there cheering the team along. Remembered by his wife Glenda, family, friends and rugby pals.
