GLOUCESTER 16 LA ROCHELLE 27 FRI 2ND APRIL | KINGSHOLM La Rochelle take their opportunities well and beat Gloucester Rugby in tight encounter. Gloucester Rugby put up a good fight in their 27-16 loss to La Rochelle at Kingsholm in the European Champions Cup. La Rochelle kept their scoreboard ticking with accurate kicks at goal which ultimately built a gap too big for Gloucester Rugby to bridge. It was a tight first half with the French side scoring two tries through Dillyn Leyds and Arthur Retiere with fly-half Ihaia West slotting a conversion and a penalty. In the second half, the French side kicked a further four penalties compared to Gloucester Rugby’s one to build a lead that the Cherry and Whites couldn’t get back from. Gloucester Rugby were well in the fight and it was small infringements building up over time which led to the result going the way it did. Ruan Ackermann got over for Gloucester Rugby’s try and it was scored after the Cherry and Whites played what they saw ahead of them and made good use of the bounce of the ball. Barton had a penalty kick to touch but the ball stayed in and the chase from Sharples and Ludlow was good enough to turn the ball over and give Gloucester Rugby the possession which ultimately led to the try.

THE COACH GEORGE SKIVINGTON George Skivington was announced as Gloucester Rugby’s Head Coach in July 2020. Skivington was previously forwards coach at London Irish, and has also coached with the Samoan national team. His playing career included captaining England Saxons and London Irish, as well as time with Wasps and Leicester Tigers. Upon his appointment he said “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Gloucester Rugby. I’ve been very impressed with everyone I’ve met at the Club so far, and the vision they have for the Club. What I particularly liked was how far-reaching the vision is, building from the Academy, through the first team, and across the whole Club. I can’t wait to play my part in it. “When I was playing, Gloucester was one of a couple of clubs that you never fancied visiting. We want to bring that feeling back to Kingsholm.”

HENRY TRINDER BIDS FAREWELL TO GLOUCESTER Gloucester Rugby can confirm that Henry Trinder has left Gloucester Rugby to take up an opportunity to play for RC Vannes in France. Trinder, 31, has been an incredible servant to Gloucester Rugby having originally made his debut in Cherry & White against Sale Sharks in 2008. 13 years later, the centre has made 172 appearances, and scored 46 tries for the Club.

Trinder came through the academy ranks at Kingsholm with the likes of Jonny May and Charlie Sharples. He went on to represent England at U20, the England Saxons, as well as playing for England against the Barbarians. Despite a number of setbacks disrupting Trinder’s rhythm in Cherry & White, it’s credit to Henry for the way in which he was determined and dedicated to bounce-back stronger each time as well as continuing to be the consummate professional around the Club. Henry celebrated his testimonial year during the 2019-20 season dubbed the ‘Trindermonial’ to mark an incredible career in Cherry & White, raising money for the Pied Piper Appeal. Trinder will leave the Cherry & Whites to pursue an opportunity to play in France with RC Vannes.

It goes without saying that Henry has given a huge amount of his life to this Club and has left many of us with fond memories of seeing his magic on the pitch at Kingsholm.

LOUIS REES-ZAMMIT WINGER The recent Six Nations winner has been scoring tries for fun ever since he was in the Gloucester Rugby Academy. The Welshman is the youngest Gloucester Rugby player to play in the Premiership and was just 18 years and 70 days when he made his debut in that competition against Bath at Kingsholm.

ROY HINDLE KEAN He just turned 80 years old on March 4th and passed away on April 2nd after a year of treatment for prostate and then lung cancer. He was the kindest, funniest and most charming man. He could make friends with anyone. He used to watch Sale Sharks at the Sale ground many years ago and travel in by tram. Then when they moved to Edgeley and I took and interest we’d spend our Friday nights there. Just the two us. He was the most wonderful grandad and great-grandad to my two children and the memories I have with him at Edgeley Park are priceless. He will be laid to rest in my team scarf and I don’t think there is anything he’d like more. So thank you, thank you for the memories - Megan Boswell, Roy’s Granddaughter
