DIRECTOR OF RUGBY

Seeing the reaction I’m getting from the boys, it makes me as a coach and them better as players. I have no complaints though so far, just a few things I would have done differently, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Good afternoon, we’re set for a big test today with an in-form London Irish side heading to the AJ Bell Stadium for a rare Sunday fixture. Anger, frustration, acceptance. We’ve been through all those emotions over the last week. There was a lot of frustration post game as we didn’t take advantage of countless opportunities against Saints, we spent four times the amount of time attacking inside the 22 than Northampton did and came away with very little. Fair play to Saints, they took their chances well and made us work for it in that second half. I feel better about it now as we are realising where we are making our errors more and more and we’re on the right path.

There were a couple of instances last weekend where we weren’t as dominant as we would have liked to be, and they probably decided the game. Every set piece can be game defining these days, as can the breakdown stats. Irish have the most turnovers at the breakdown in the league so we need to be sharp with our ball carrying and our urgency to keep the ball and keep it quick. Nobody likes losing, but part of this adventure we are on is being able to enjoy what we are doing. What’s the point in doing this if we are not enjoying it. When I say enjoy, it’s not just the triumphs either, it’s about enjoying the struggle too, enjoying having your back against a wall. We have a top group of lads here that speak my language, and when you’re on a path together, finding your way through things, it binds you and makes everyone tighter and I think that’s the part I’m enjoying the most so far.

Looking ahead to today’s oppenents - you just have to look at their past games to see what a threat they are. They have shown such resilience in their performances over the last few rounds, they obviously have a lot of belief in their ability to outwork and out last other teams and they have pushed every team they have played for the full eighty so far. We’re not going to break London Irish easily, we need to find other ways of pinning Thanks for your continues support. them down and we can start by being consistently Alex. dominant up front.

WHY AJ MACGINTY IS THE BEST 10 IN THE PREM GUEST EDITORIAL

This is a guest article originally featured on www.matchreport.co.uk written by Ben Nurse. Alan MacGinty is a Dublin born, American international, fly half. After only playing a total of 502 Premiership minutes last season AJ has experienced a rugby renaissance of sorts and already has 772 Premiership minutes so far this season after just 11 games and has nailed down the 10 shirt.

18

W W W.SALESHARKS.COM

Despite his mercurial form this season, I don’t think anyone would consider AJ the best fly half in the Premiership, but this is because the nuance and style of MacGinty’s game can often go over people’s heads. The intention of this article isn’t to play down the ability of any other 10 but to appreciate the ability of AJ and maybe convince everyone reading this that he is the best 10 in the Premiership.

ROLE

To understand why AJ is so good you must first understand how modern rugby attacks function. Successful rugby teams will have one dominant halfback and one non-dominant halfback, simply so that one of them can control the pattern of the attack and manage the attacking options. Think of a kitchen, you can’t have two head chefs because this would create conflict and confusion, one of them must have ultimate control to create the best end product. For example, in the France attack, Antione Dupont is the dominant halfback while Ntamack and Jalibert are the non-dominant half backs however in the Scotland attack Finn Russell is the dominant half back and Price is the non-dominant half back. You want to give the ‘stronger’ of your two half backs more control so that they make the correct decisions. Once you understand this you must then understand that modern rugby teams either play off 9 or off 10.

Teams that play off 9 play a tight, forward-orientated game that is designed to wear down defenders (e.g. Exeter) while teams that play off 10 play a more wider game designed to engage more defenders and create gaps (e.g. Bristol). How does this relate to AJ? Well Sale play with Faf De Klerk as the dominant half back and AJ as the nondominant half back and they also play off 9 more than any other club in the Premiership with 63% of ball off 9 (2nd is Leicester with 62%) and against Bristol in February this stat peaked at 87% off 9 which is insane. This means that for every 100 passes Faf De Klerk made, less than 13 of them went to AJ. Therefore, AJ has to be more efficient than any other 10 in the league because he consistently has less possession and chances with the ball. In addition, Sale’s forward orientated game plan means that Sale rarely spread the ball into the wide channels and prefer to play tight amongst the forwards when they get a try scoring opportunity. I feel safe in the assumption that in a game plan more directed towards attacking in the wide channels, and with more control, AJ could thrive and double his attacking stats.

A big Sale Sharks welcome to London Irish. The Exiles are in fine form with big results against Worcester, Wasps & a narrow loss against Leicester tigers recently. However the Sharks have a good record against the men in green, so this should be an interesting tie.

LONDON IRISH 20 WORCESTER 17 SATURDAY 14 MAR 2021 | BRENTFORD COMMUNITY STADIUM London Irish produced a backs-to-thewall defensive display to clinch victory over Worcester Warriors on Sunday afternoon. The Exiles were forced to dig deep – and that they did, running out 20-17 winners to continue their fine run of form at the Brentford Community Stadium. Worcester’s pressure was relentless, with Irish time and again forced to call upon all their defensive reserves to keep the visitors at bay as the clock ticked beyond the hour mark. With 13 minutes to go, Irish were reduced to 14 men when Nick Phipps was shown a yellow card – and from the next attack, Warriors drew level. After a sustained period of possession, Justin Clegg touched down – and Searle added the extras to make it a level ball game with nine minutes to play. A minute later, Jackson – from a yard inside the halfway line – kicked Irish back in front with an expertly struck penalty, that was even more incredible given the swirling wind inside the Brentford Community Stadium!

THE COACH DECLAN KIDNEY Declan Kidney joined London Irish in March 2018 as Technical Consultant, before becoming Director of Rugby in May 2018. Kidney is one of Irish rugby’s most successful and celebrated coaches and has legendary status in his native Munster, having guided the province to two European Rugby Champions Cup titles and to a further two Champions Cup finals during his time as head coach at Thomond Park. In 2002 he joined Ireland’s coaching staff and returned to lead the national team in 2008. The Grand Slam he won 2009 was Ireland’s first in 61 years and helped earn Kidney the accolade of World Rugby Coach of the Year, which was followed by a quarter-final spot at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Since 2013 he has held the position of director of sport and physical activity at University College Cork in Ireland, one of Europe’s leading academic institutions.

An unmissable lineup on BT Sport

WE ARE A BROTHERHOOD Steve Mafi praised the ‘brotherhood’ that exists within the London Irish squad in the wake of Sunday’s 20-17 victory against Worcester Warriors at the Brentford Community Stadium. Mafi, who scored Irish’s second try and was named BT Sport man-of-the-match, believes the win - which arrived despite Irish having less than 30 per-cent possession throughout the 80 minutes - owed much to the squad’s team spirit and character. “It was a real war out there” he admitted. “Credit to the boys, we fought really hard for that win. It’s a brotherhood here and that showed with the way we stood up and stuck together. We just had to keep competing, even when they were coming at us hard.

T H E

O P P O S I T I O N

We knew we had to keep tight and compact to keep them away from the try-line - and the boys did that. At times we made it hard for ourselves with our discipline, and that’s something we’ll continue to work on - but we got the result and that’s what mattered most in the end.” Mafi added: “It’s satisfying to win games like that every now and then. “We’re trying to make this stadium a fortress and we feel we’re heading in the right direction.”
