Good evening and welcome to round 12 of the Gallagher Premiership. We are back at the AJ Bell for a Friday night Northern derby against Newcastle Falcons. We had a big result last week against the double champions Exeter, but we still have areas we can improve on. We’re not just looking at what happened at the weekend or what our next opponents will bring anymore, but where the game is going from a law perspective and what the referees are looking at too. Newcastle are an incredibly frustrating team to play against. When you have the work ethic they have and you are as gritty and committed as they are, it eats away at your opponents over a match. Playing against that sort of team eats away at your resolve and you start to feel like your plan isn’t working, you feel like you’re never getting quick ball, not winning the collisions and all these things have a debilitating effect on your energy, and once you go off your game plan, they have got you.

I’m sure it will be a good scrap tonight, and it will be for 80 minutes I have no doubt about that. As far as injuries go, Rohan Janse van Rensburg is back running which is great news but he still remains unavailable. Akker is available for selection and it’s been a long awkward road back for him so we are very pleased. Ewan Ashman and Curtis Langdon have both performed very well over the past few weeks so they will remain in contention going forward. Ben Curry is around five weeks away, and wow, he looks massive! He’s been in the gym hard during his rehab period and is looking in great shape. Manu is doing well but isn’t ready just yet, he’ll be making an appearance before the end of the season though!

Our plan this week is to understand what’s coming. REVISED EPCR TOURNAMENT FORMATS Following in-depth discussions with its shareholder leagues and unions, EPCR can announce revised tournament formats for the 2020/21 Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. THE COACH DEAN RICHARDS Dean Richards was appointed Newcastle Falcons director of rugby in the summer of 2012 following three years out of the game. Having won four Premiership titles and two Heineken Cups with Leicester Tigers as well as guiding Harlequins to promotion back to the top-flight at the first attempt. Often regarded as England’s best ever Number Eight, Richards remains one of the most recognisable figures in the English game and immediately set about laying the foundations for a new era of rugby at Kingston Park Stadium. The 2017-18 campaign saw Richards winning the Premiership director of rugby of the season award after steering the Falcons to a 20-yearhigh finishing position of fourth, also reaching the semi-finals of the European Challenge Cup and AngloWelsh Cup. CHICK READY TO KICK ON Having waited eleven and a half months for his first taste of match action, Newcastle Falcons No 8 Callum Chick is eager to build on the flying start which saw him scoring just 13 minutes into his comeback game. “I was more worried about my lungs than my knee, to be honest,” joked the Ponteland native, whose previous outing had been the pre-lockdown drubbing of Bedford back on March 13, 2020.

Thankfully there was no surgery involved, and as frustrating as it was you just have to get on with it on those situations.”

SHARKS FORCES

Sharks Forces, is the Trusts’ armed forces project that works annually with over 100 veterans and serving personnel, to help promote positive mental well-being and community cohesion. This includes physical activity sessions, welfare walks, art therapy classes and mental well-being workshops designed specifically for veterans in the Greater Manchester area. Adam is 26-year-old veteran, who left the service in 2019, following medical discharge.

Adam attends our weekly ‘Welfare Walks’ and has been a key member of the group. Due to the stage, he is at with his physical rehabilitation, the walks are a manageable and safe way to stay active and meet new people. “I believe Sharks Forces has been really good for me, since Eddie started a meet for all the veterans at Sale Water Park every week.
